How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

In brief
  • Consult your GP or an international travel health clinic to assess your health and receive travel-specific medical advice, including vaccinations; consider a dental check-up before departure. France Diplomatie
  • Prevent mosquito-borne diseases by using long clothing, insect repellents, mosquito nets, and eliminating standing water; seek immediate medical care if chikungunya or dengue symptoms (fever, muscle/joint pain, rash) appear. France Diplomatie
  • Medical services in Timor-Leste are limited; evacuations to Australia or Singapore are likely in emergencies; ensure travel health insurance covers treatment and repatriation, and carry accessible funds for medical costs. Foreign Office

  • Fièvre jaune : la vaccination contre la fièvre jaune peut être exigée à l’entrée sur le territoire du Timor oriental, pour les voyageurs en provenance de pays où elle est endémique. Se renseigner auprès de la représentation diplomatique la plus proche de son lieu de résidence ;
  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Tuberculose : chez les enfants de moins de 15 ans en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales ;
  • Chikungunya : en cas d’épidémie ou de séjour prolongé ;
  • Dengue : en cas d’épidémie active ou de séjour prolongé en zone endémique ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Health — Foreign Office

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Call 110, +670 331 1044 or +670 723 3212 and ask for an ambulance.

Emergency medical services in Timor-Leste are unreliable. Make your own way to hospital if you can.

There may be other numbers for the areas you visit – ask your hotel or the local police.

Contact your insurance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

  • check the latest vaccine recommendations for Timor-Leste
  • see where to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

Go to TravelHealthPro to see what health risks you’ll face in Timor-Leste , including:

  • rabies (Oecusse exclave, Bobonaro and Covalima municipalities, and

possibly elsewhere)

  • chikungunya
  • dengue
  • gastroenteritis
  • typhoid
  • hepatitis
  • tuberculosis

Altitude sickness is a risk in parts of Timor-Leste. Read more about altitude sickness on TravelHealthPro .

Medication

The legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can be different in other countries.

Healthcare in Timor-Leste

Medical services in Timor-Leste are limited, particularly outside Dili.

In a medical emergency, it’s likely you’ll need to be evacuated to Australia or Singapore. However, medical evacuation is difficult because of the limited number of airlines from Timor-Leste. You should make sure you have adequate travel health insurance and accessible funds to cover the cost of any medical treatment abroad and repatriation.

  • ne pas montrer de signe ostentatoire de richesse et de laisser tous biens de valeur dans un lieu sécurisé (ex : coffre des hôtels) ;
  • ne pas se déplacer avec des sommes d’argent importantes ;
  • laisser ses documents d’identité et de voyage en lieu sûr et se munir de photocopies lors de ses déplacements ;

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Timor-Leste

Although there’s no recent history of terrorism in Timor-Leste, attacks cannot be ruled out.

Political situation

The security situation in Timor-Leste has improved but there are still underlying tensions, particularly during election periods when the security situation could deteriorate with little warning.

Political demonstrations and local unrest occasionally happen. Minor disputes can become violent. Avoid any demonstrations and large crowds, particularly around Tasi Tolu and Comoro in Dili.

Crime

Crime such as gang-related violence, robbery and assault are common in Timor-Leste. Burglaries are not common but have happened. There have been instances of unmetered taxis charging tourists extortionate prices.

Protecting yourself and your belongings

You can take steps to reduce your personal risk by:

  • not displaying expensive items of jewellery
  • not carrying large sums of money
  • keeping your accommodation locked at all times
  • keeping your car doors locked and windows up at all times
  • not travelling alone or to isolated areas
  • taking care if you go outside after dark
  • taking care in areas which are remote and cut off from services
  • booking taxis through your hotel, and seeking local advice on appropriate fares
Sexual assault

There have been reports of harassment and violence against travellers, including lewd remarks and indecent exposure. Offenders mostly target women, but may harass men as well. Sexual assault can happen in public places, such as Beach Road in Dili.

Travel as a group if you can, including when exercising outdoors. If possible, avoid using public transport or taxis alone at night.

See advice for women travelling abroad .

Group fights

There is occasional fighting between groups in Timor-Leste, sometimes related to martial arts groups. These incidents often involve stone throwing and occasionally machetes and knives. Most happen at night.

Foreign nationals have not been targeted, but leave the area immediately if you’re aware of fighting.

Personal ID and travel documents

Carry a copy of the photo page of your passport and entry visa with you in case the authorities ask to see it. Make sure your travel documents are up-to-date and available in case you need to leave at short notice.

Illegal drugs and prison sentences

Do not get involved with illegal drugs. There are severe penalties if you’re convicted.

Money

Credit cards are accepted for payments by few outlets in Timor-Leste. ATMs, banks, and credit card facilities are not common outside of municipal capitals.

There are a few currency exchanges in the country, but exchange rates are poor and sterling may not be accepted. Bring a few small (5 US dollar) notes as larger denomination notes can be difficult to spend. Notes printed before 2009 are usually rejected, but can be changed at the Central Bank in Dili.

Swimming safety

Crocodiles are frequently seen in inland waterways and on the south coast and the eastern region. Occasionally they may be seen at beaches near Dili.…

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Timor-Leste’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Timor-Leste set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Timor-Leste Embassy in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

To enter Timor-Leste, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive and have 2 blank pages.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

You must have a visa to visit Timor-Leste for tourism.

You will be issued a single-entry tourism visa, valid for up to 30 days, when you arrive at Presidente Nicolau Lobato International Airport in Dili, or Dili seaport. The visa costs 30 US dollars, payable only in cash.

Travelling to Oecussi overland

If you plan to travel overland, rather than by ferry, to the exclave of Oecussi, you will need to apply for a separate visa on arrival. This visa is available at the Wini border checkpoint. Alternatively, you can apply for a visa for Oecussi in advance. To do this, you must show your round-trip ticket and complete the required forms at your nearest Timor-Leste embassy or consulate, or at the  Office of the Ministry of the Interior  in Dili, before you travel.

Entering at the Atambua-Batugade border crossing

If you’re entering Timor-Leste through Indonesia at the Atambua-Batugade border crossing, you can purchase a visa on entry. Alternatively, you can purchase a tourism visa in advance from a Timor-Leste embassy or consulate in either Denpasar or Kupang. These visas are usually single-entry and last for 30 days.

See travel advice for Indonesia for more information.

Extending your tourism visa

You can apply to extend a tourism visa for 30 days. If possible, apply at least 15 days in advance of the tourist visa’s expiry date.

Vaccine requirements

For details about medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, see TravelHealthPro’s Timor-Leste guide .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Timor-Leste . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Taking money into Timor-Leste

If you’re planning on bringing cash or travellers cheques worth 20,000 US dollars or more you must get authorisation from the Central Bank of Timor-Leste before you arrive.

What are the entry requirements for Timor-Leste with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): For stays under 90 days within a 180-day period, no visa is required for Timor-Leste, but a passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended entry date must be presented. This applies to paid activities as well. For stays exceeding 90 days, consult the Timor-Leste Immigration Service website or contact the nearest diplomatic representation. Entry by air is via Dili’s Nicolau Lobato International Airport, with direct flights to Denpasar/Bali, Darwin (Australia), and Singapore.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British citizens must hold a passport valid for at least 6 months after arrival and with 2 blank pages to enter Timor-Leste, or be denied entry. A single-entry tourism visa valid for up to 30 days costs 30 US dollars and is issued on arrival at Dili airport or seaport, payable only in cash. Travellers entering Oecussi exclave overland must either obtain a separate visa on arrival at Wini border or apply in advance with a round-trip ticket and completed forms at a Timor-Leste embassy or the Ministry of the Interior in Dili.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a Timor-Leste visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (EUR 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.
  • Attach it to the visa file; if in doubt about the format, write to us.
