How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

Recommended vaccines and medicines11

Routine vaccinesCDC ↗

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include Chickenpox (Varicella) Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (DTaP, Tdap, or Td) Flu (influenza) Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) Polio Shingles

COVID-19CDC ↗

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines. Please see  Your COVID-19 Vaccination  for more information.

ChikungunyaCDC ↗

All travelers should take steps to prevent mosquito bites. Chikungunya vaccination is generally not recommended. Travelers who wish to consider vaccination can visit “What to consider before traveling” on the chikungunya vaccines page to learn more.

Hepatitis ACDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Panama. Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series. Travelers allergic to a vaccine component should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.

Hepatitis BCDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers younger than 60 years old traveling to Panama. Unvaccinated travelers 60 years and older may get vaccinated before traveling to Panama.

MalariaCDC ↗

CDC recommends that travelers going to certain areas of Panama take prescription medicine to prevent malaria. Depending on the medicine you take, you will need to start taking this medicine multiple days before your trip, as well as during and after your trip. Talk to your doctor about which malaria medication you should take.

MeaslesCDC ↗

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

MonkeypoxCDC ↗

Monkeypox vaccination is recommended for any adult who anticipates any of the following activities during travel: Sexual or intimate contact with a new partner Sexual or intimate contact at a commercial sex venue, like a sex club or bathhouse Sexual or intimate contact in exchange for money, goods, drugs, or other trade Sexual or intimate contact in association with a large public event, such as a rave, party, or…

RabiesCDC ↗

Dogs infected with rabies are not commonly found in Panama. Rabies is present in bats. If rabies exposures occur while in Panama, rabies vaccines may only be available in larger suburban/urban medical facilities.

TyphoidCDC ↗

Recommended for most travelers. Typhoid vaccine is not 100% effective. Practicing safe food and water habits , including washing hands at key times , can also help prevent typhoid fever .

Yellow FeverCDC ↗

CDC recommendations: Vaccine is  recommended  for all travelers ≥9 months old going to all mainland areas east of the Canal Zone including Darién Province, the indigenous provinces ( comarcas indígena ) of Emberá and Kuna Yala (also spelled Guna Yala), and areas of the provinces of Colón and Panamá, east of the Canal Zone.

CDC Travelers' Health, re-read weekly — the recommendation depends on your age, vaccines and itinerary: confirm it with a doctor or a travel clinic 4 to 6 weeks before departure.CDC ↗read 10.10.2026

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult a doctor or international vaccination center before your trip for health assessments and recommended vaccinations, including those for diphtheria, tetanus, and polio.
  • Carry necessary medications in their original packaging with an international common name prescription, and verify their legality in Panama before travel.
  • Yellow fever vaccination is recommended for stays in continental areas east of the Panama Canal, and is required for travelers from endemic countries.
  • Take precautions against mosquito-borne illnesses like dengue and chikungunya by wearing protective clothing and using insect repellent.
  • Ensure you have adequate travel insurance for local treatment or medical evacuation, as medical facilities outside major cities are limited.
  • Hospitals in Panama require financial guarantees, such as a credit card or advance payment, before commencing treatment.

  • Fièvre jaune : la vaccination contre la fièvre jaune est recommandée (à pratiquer avant le départ, dans un centre agréé) pour les séjours dans les zones continentales situées à l’est de la zone du canal de Panama (l’Est, le Darien et la communauté Kuna notamment : voir la rubrique Sécurité de la présente fiche). La vaccination antiamarile (fièvre jaune) est par ailleurs exigée pour les voyageurs en provenance des pays où elle est endémique ;
  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;

Maladies transmises par les moustiques

Chikungunya

  • d’éviter les contacts avec les rongeurs vivants ou morts, leurs excrétions ou leurs nids ;
  • de se laver soigneusement les mains après un travail ou une sortie dans la nature ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

  • ne prendre que des taxis de couleur jaune, mais rester vigilant en toutes circonstances, des agressions pouvant aussi se produire dans ces taxis ;
  • ne pas prendre les taxis dont les vitres sont fumées ou polarisées ;
  • s’assurer que la plaque et le numéro de licence sont bien visibles ;
  • ne jamais prendre un taxi dans lequel se trouve déjà une autre personne ;

  • être convenablement équipé (sac à dos, bonnes chaussures de marche, vêtements chauds compte tenu des variations de température en altitude) ;
  • se munir d’une lampe de poche ;
  • emporter avec soi de l’eau et de la nourriture (stock de survie de 24 heures) ;
  • signaler son départ et son itinéraire à l’hôtel de départ et/ou à des proches ;

  • à Colón et à Panama City, renseignez-vous auprès de vos personnes de contact ou du personnel de l'hôtel sur la situation locale et les quartiers réputés sûrs;
  • joignez-vous de préférence à un groupe pour vos excursions à Colón (également dans le port) et faites-vous accompagner de guides fiables ayant une expertise des lieux;
  • évitez de vous promener dans les quartiers défavorisés;
  • ne portez pas sur vous d' objets de valeur (montre, bijoux, etc.), ni de grosses sommes d'argent;
  • déposez vos papiers dans le coffre de l'hôtel et gardez sur vous une photocopie du passeport (avec la page comportant le tampon du visa d'entrée);
  • une prudence particulière est de mise dans les bus et les gares routières, les vols à la tire sont fréquents;
  • empruntez des taxis jaunes disposant d'une licence ou les taxis de l'hôtel. À l’aéroport international Tocumen, vous pouvez commander des taxis avec licence à la station de taxi située dans le hall d'arrivée. Insistez en tous cas pour qu’aucun autre passager et aucune autre passagère ne monte à bord. N’utilisez pas non plus de taxis collectifs ;
  • faites preuve d'une grande méfiance si des personnes inconnues ou de simples connaissances (y compris des jeunes) vous proposent leur aide, pour trouver un taxi par exemple. Elles sont fréquemment impliquées dans des vols;

Regional risks — Foreign Office

This section has safety advice for regions of Panama. It only covers regions where FCDO has specific advice.

You should also read FCDO’s overall travel advice and safety and security advice .

Colombia border

There is a risk of violence near the Colombia border in an area east of a line drawn between:

  • Punta Carreto in the Comarca de Guna Yala on the Atlantic coast
  • Yaviza in the eastern Darien Province
  • Punta Piña on the Pacific coast

You should only travel to the east of this line in an organised group, and make sure local police and security authorities are aware of your visit. Follow local security advice and do not stray from your group.

Colombian criminal violence can spill over into the region of Panama bordering Colombia where there is a threat from Colombian and other armed groups. Foreign nationals and Panamanian citizens have been the victims of violent crimes, kidnapping and murder in this area.

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Panama

Although there is no recent history of terrorism in Panama, attacks cannot be ruled out.

Protests and demonstrations

Protests can be unpredictable, occur at short notice and escalate quickly. Avoid protests and demonstrations, monitor local media and follow advice from local authorities. Avoid travelling around protest-affected areas at night. Protests may be particularly large in Colón City.

Protests often involve informal road blocks and can affect access to the border crossing into Costa Rica at Paso Canoas and international airports. Check your route and alternatives before travelling. If you are unable to reach an airport for a planned flight, contact your airline to make alternative arrangements.

Crime

If you are the victim of a crime in Panama and want to report the incident, do so before you leave the country, otherwise the police may not investigate.

Street crime can happen anywhere, but these areas of Panama City have higher levels of crime:

  • San Miguelito
  • El Chorrillo
  • Río Abajo
  • 24 de Diciembre
  • Santa Ana
  • Juan Diaz
Protecting yourself and your belongings

There is a risk of pickpocketing in busy areas, on buses and at bus stations. You can take steps to protect yourself and your belongings, including:

  • not carrying large amounts of money or valuables around with you
  • leaving valuables in a safe place such as a hotel safe

People have been attacked after withdrawing cash from ATMs. Where possible, use an ATM inside a bank or shopping centre.

Take sensible precautions to avoid mugging, particularly in main shopping areas and tourist sites, including:

  • Albrook Mall in Panama City
  • Via España and Avenida Central in Panama City
  • the area of Calidonia in Panama City
  • the old town (Casco Viejo) in Panama City
  • the old Panama ruins (Panama Viejo) in Panama City
  • the Madden Dam area – off the main Panama to Colón road
  • the city of Colón

Be wary if visitors approach you to get access to your accommodation. Criminal gangs have used this method to commit burglaries. If you’re in any doubt, call the police.

Sexual assault

There have been violent attacks, including sexual assault, in tourist destinations in Panama City and across the country. Use the same level of caution you would in the UK when travelling at night. Avoid poorly lit areas and do not walk on your own.

See advice for women travelling abroad .

Gang-related crime

There have been incidents of targeted gang assassinations, some in tourist areas. Most of these crimes are between members of rival drug gangs.

Personal ID

As a foreign national, you must carry ID such as a passport. The police will usually accept a printed copy.

Curfews

Local authorities occasionally impose night-time curfews for adults and/or unaccompanied minors under the age of 18. These are usually in place for several weeks and limited exceptions apply. This is part of government efforts to tackle criminal groups and organised crime.

Those who do not comply with the curfew face arrest by the police. They are not usually applied in tourist areas, but…

Local laws

You must abide by local laws. Learn about what you should do and how we can help if you are arrested or detained abroad. Panama’s legal system is complex. Reporting a crime differs greatly from reporting a crime in Canada and may vary among Panama’s provinces. Local authorities generally do not speak English or French. Therefore, you may require a translator or legal representation.

Drugs

Penalties for possession, use or trafficking of illegal drugs are severe. Convicted offenders can expect heavy fines and long jail sentences. Drugs, alcohol and travel

Identification

Panamanian law requires all individuals to carry official identification documents at all times. Authorities may jail and fine you if you fail to produce identification upon request.

Photography

Indigenous persons may ask you for a small fee if you take picture of them. Ask permission before taking photographs of individuals, particularly of children and women.

2SLGBTQI+ persons

Panamanian law does not prohibit sexual acts between individuals of the same sex. However, 2SLGBTQI+ persons could be discriminated against based on their sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression or sex characteristics. Travel and your sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics

Driving

You can drive in Panama with your Canadian driver’s licence for a period of up to 90 days. Although vehicle insurance is mandatory, many Panamanians drive without it. In the event of an accident:

  • call the police
  • don’t move the vehicle until a police officer tells you to do so

You should carry an international driving permit. International Driving Permit

Investments

If you plan on buying property or making other investments in Panama, seek legal advice in Canada and in Panama. Do so before making commitments. Related disputes could take time and be costly to resolve.

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. The convention applies between Canada and Panama. If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Panama, and if the applicable conditions are met, you may apply for the return of your child to the Panamanian court. If you are in this situation:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • contact the Central Authority for your province or territory of residence for information on starting an application under The Hague Convention
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Panama to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children's Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies. Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Money

The currency in Panama is the balboa (PAB). It is used interchangeably with the U.S. dollar (USD). There have been issues with counterfeit US$50 and US$100 bills. Carry only small bills of U.S. dollars.

Smoking and e-cigarette bans

It is illegal to smoke in public places. You could be fined 25 to 100 US dollars if you are caught smoking where it’s not allowed. The use of e-cigarettes is also banned in public places.

Illegal drugs and prison sentences

Do not become involved with drugs of any kind. You can get a prison sentence for possessing even a small quantity of drugs. The judicial process is slow and sentencing may take up to 2 years, during which you are likely to be detained. Conditions in prisons and other detention facilities in Panama are often harsh. Most facilities are overcrowded with limited access to healthcare. There have been recent cases of riots resulting in prisoner deaths.

LGBT+ travellers

Same-sex civil unions are illegal, but same-sex relationships are legal in Panama. Most Panamanians are generally tolerant of LGBT+ travellers. However, Panamanian law does not ban discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. There have been incidents of police officers detaining LGBT+ couples on the grounds of public indecency. Showing affection in public can lead to unwanted attention.

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Panama’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Panama set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Embassy and Consulate of Panama in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

If you are visiting Panama, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the day you plan to leave Panama.

If you live in Panama, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the day you arrive.

Your passport must have at least one blank page.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Checks at border control

Make sure you get your passport stamped.

Make sure immigration officials stamp your passport with the date you arrived in the country.

At Panamanian border control, you may need to:

  • give the address of your accommodation and a contact telephone number
  • show a return or onward ticket – particularly if you arrive by land from Costa Rica and are not a legal resident of Costa Rica
  • prove you have at least 1000 US dollars (or the same amount in other currencies) or a credit card
Visa requirements

You can visit Panama for up to 3 months without a visa if you arrive by land or air. There are different visa requirements for sea arrivals.

You cannot normally extend your stay, unless you apply to change your immigration status (for example, for business purposes or marriage) within the 3 months.

If you try to extend your stay by visiting a neighbouring country and returning to Panama, immigration officials may detain you. The British Embassy cannot intervene in decisions made by Panama’s immigration officials.

If you arrive by sea

If you arrive on a vessel that is not a cruise ship, you must have a visa to enter Panama. You must pay a fee of 100 US dollars, plus 5 US dollars registration, for each passenger or crew member. There may be other fees, for example for cruising permits. Check in advance what permits you will need and how to get them.

If you arrive on a cruise ship or are travelling through the Panama Canal, you do not need a visa unless you are staying in Panama for more than 3 months. Immigration authorities will stamp your passport if you leave the ship. They do not board cruise ships travelling through the Canal to check passports.

Applying for a visa

If you need a visa, apply through the Embassy and Consulate of Panama in the UK . They can give you more information on entry requirements.

For information on extending your stay, check with the Panama National Migration Service (in Spanish).

Transport and infrastructure

DengueMosquitoes bite by day: repellent, long sleeves.
MalariaPresent in some areas: talk to a doctor before leaving.
ChikungunyaMosquito-borne: same protection as for dengue.
SunUV very high (8): hat, sunscreen, water.
MedicationIn their box, with the prescription — in English if possible.

The health system — With 1.6 physicians per 1,000 people (64% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover. Health spending of 1,558 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.

Back home — a fever in the following weeks should be told to a doctor, naming the country.

What is the official risk level in Panama today?

Level 2/4 — Exercise Increased Caution, U.S. Department of State, retrieved on 16 October 2026.

  • Is the whole country advised against? United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no (reading of 27 September 2026).
  • Switzerland’s FDFA advises against travel to certain regions (published 19.03.2026).
  • Contractually, only an FDFA, FOPH or WHO advisory against the trip opens Module A (art. 18.1) — that is not the case today.
  • International medical cover, 24/7 number saved, and a read of the areas named under Safety & risks before booking the itinerary.

Is the whole of Panama advised against, or only some areas?

An area advised against does not rule out the country.

  • Official answers: United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no.
  • Foreign Office, regional risks: “This section has safety advice for regions of Panama. It only covers regions where FCDO has specific advice. You should also read FCDO’s overall travel advice and safety and security advice . Colombia border There is a risk of violence near the Colombia…”

What are the entry requirements for Panama with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): All COVID-19 health entry restrictions for Panama have been lifted. French nationals do not require a visa for stays under 90 days but need a return ticket and proof of $500 financial solvency. Passports must be valid for three months upon arrival, though six months is strongly advised.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British citizens must ensure their passport expires at least six months after their planned departure from Panama. Your passport requires at least one blank page and must be stamped by immigration officials upon arrival. Visitors may need to show proof of at least 1000 US dollars or a credit card at border control.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a Panama visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (EUR 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.
  • Attach it to the visa file; if in doubt about the format, write to us.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Panama?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — No area exclusion at this level — compare cap, deductible and covered duration.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.
