How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

Recommended vaccines and medicines10

Routine vaccinesCDC ↗

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include Chickenpox (Varicella) Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (DTaP, Tdap, or Td) Flu (influenza) Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) Polio Shingles

COVID-19CDC ↗

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines. Please see  Your COVID-19 Vaccination  for more information.

Hepatitis ACDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Liberia. Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series. Travelers allergic to a vaccine component should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.

Hepatitis BCDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers of all ages traveling to Liberia.

MalariaCDC ↗

CDC recommends that travelers going to Liberia take prescription medicine to prevent malaria. Depending on the medicine you take, you will need to start taking this medicine multiple days before your trip, as well as during and after your trip. Talk to your doctor about which malaria medication you should take. Transmission areas All Drug resistance 1 Chloroquine Species P. falciparum (primarily) P. malariae , P.

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult your doctor or an international vaccination centre before departure to assess your health and receive vaccination recommendations, including for yellow fever, hepatitis A and B, typhoid, and rabies. France Diplomatie
  • Yellow fever vaccination is a mandatory entry requirement for Liberia and must be administered at an approved centre before departure. France Diplomatie
  • Carry prescription medications in original packaging with original labels and an international non-proprietary name prescription; verify authorisation in your destination country. France Diplomatie
  • Medical facilities in Liberia are poorly equipped with unreliable blood supplies; hospitals require financial guarantees before treatment and serious illness requires evacuation to Europe. DFAE
  • Obtain comprehensive travel health insurance covering local treatment, medical evacuation and repatriation, as most healthcare providers accept only cash payments. Foreign Office
  • Protect against mosquito-borne diseases by wearing long clothing, applying insect repellent, using bed nets, and avoiding raw or undercooked food and untreated water. France Diplomatie

  • Fièvre jaune : la fièvre jaune étant endémique au Libéria, la vaccination est une condition d’entrée sur le territoire. Il est recommandé de se faire vacciner dans un centre agréé avant le départ ;
  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Tuberculose : chez les enfants de moins de 15 ans en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales ;
  • Chikungunya : en cas d’épidémie ou de séjour prolongé ;
  • Dengue : en cas d’épidémie active ou de séjour prolongé en zone endémique ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Health — Foreign Office

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

There is no reliable ambulance service in Liberia. If you need emergency medical treatment, you should make your own way to hospital. You can also get advice from your hotel or the local police.

Contact your insurance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

  • check the latest vaccine recommendations for Liberia
  • see how to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

See what health risks you’ll face in Liberia , including:

  • malaria
  • typhoid

There is also a risk of Lassa fever in Liberia, with several confirmed cases in 2026. Check TravelHealthPro’s information on Lassa fever . If you’re concerned that you might have been exposed to, or are showing symptoms of Lassa fever, get immediate medical advice.

The 2025 UNAIDS Spectrum data estimates that approximately 36,000 people are living with HIV in Liberia. This translates to a prevalence percentage of around 0.9% of the adult population. You should use normal precautions to avoid exposure to HIV/AIDS.

Medication

The legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can be different in other countries.

Medication is usually sold over the counter in pharmacies, without a prescription. Supplies can be unreliable and medications available in the UK may not be available in Liberia. Make sure you have adequate supplies of prescription medication, bearing in mind the risk of delays due to flight cancellations.

Read best practice when travelling with medicines on TravelHealthPro .

Healthcare in Liberia

Hospitals and medical facilities throughout Liberia are poorly equipped. Blood supplies are unreliable and unsafe, and quality medication is scarce.

There is no effective public or private accident and emergency or ambulance service anywhere in the country. Carry basic medical supplies with you.

Make sure you have adequate travel health insurance and accessible funds to cover the cost of any medical treatment abroad, medical evacuation and repatriation. Most health care providers only accept cash payments.

FCDO has a list of medical providers in Liberia where staff will speak English.

Travel and mental health

Where to go, where not to

The country is not uniform: 6 regions advised against, fully or partly, by at least one official reading. Monrovia is not one of them.

In brief
  • France Diplomatie advises against travel except for pressing reasons to border areas of Grand Cape Mount, Gbarpolu, and Lofa counties along the Sierra Leone frontier.
  • France Diplomatie advises against travel except for pressing reasons to border areas of Nimba county south of Butlo only, Grand Gereh, River Gee, and Maryland counties along the Ivory Coast frontier.

There are occasional clashes between armed groups from both sides of the Liberia-Côte d’Ivoire border in some of the more remote border areas of Grand Gedeh and River Gee counties. Use the main roads when travelling in these areas.

Sinoe rubber plantation and Sapo National Park

The Liberian authorities have limited ability to provide emergency help outside Monrovia. Check the security situation before travelling to any part of the country. Land disputes, illegal mining and occupation of rubber plantations can lead to violent incidents, particularly in rural areas.

There may be organised groups of former combatants in areas of the country where there is limited government security presence. Be especially wary in the Sinoe rubber plantation and Sapo National Park.

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Liberia

Although there is no recent history of terrorism in Liberia, attacks cannot be ruled out.

Terrorist groups in West Africa continue to mount attacks in the region. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by foreign nationals, such as:

  • beach resorts
  • hotels
  • cafés and restaurants

Stay aware of your surroundings, keep up to date with local media reports and follow the advice of local authorities.

Political situation

Liberia is generally stable politically, but protests and demonstrations do take place and, particularly small-scale protests, can begin with little or no warning. Avoid protests, demonstrations, political rallies and large crowds. Follow the advice of local authorities.

Crime

The crime rate in Liberia is high. Liberians are the main victims of crime, but foreign nationals can also be targeted. Most crime is opportunistic theft, but there are organised criminal gangs. Thieves are often armed with knives or machetes, and occasionally carry firearms.

Protecting yourself and your belongings

Foreign nationals have been mugged in the Mamba Point and Sinkor areas of Monrovia, where most international visitors stay. Criminals also operate in nightclubs and on beaches during the day.

Foreigners have reported assault and robbery happening in taxis.

You can take steps to reduce your personal risk by:

  • not carrying valuables or large sums of money in public
  • avoiding walking around Monrovia after dark
  • avoiding isolated areas after dark, including beaches
  • only staying in reputable accommodation with suitable security arrangements
  • arranging for transport, including to and from the airport, in advance
Sexual assault

Liberia has a high rate of rape and sexual assault. There have been cases of rapes and attempted rapes of foreign women, although these are rare.

Personal ID

Carry photo ID with you at all times, such as your driving licence or a copy of the photo page of your passport. You may be asked to show it at any time by immigration officials or the police.

Drug trafficking and diamond smuggling

Drug trafficking and gold and diamond smuggling are illegal. If convicted, you will get a long prison sentence. Local prison conditions are harsh.

LGBT+ travellers

Same-sex sexual activity is illegal in Liberia.

Adoption in Liberia

The Ministry of Justice in Liberia can issue a decree of adoption if all legal requirements are met. However, adoption orders from Liberia are not recognised in the UK. If you’re returning to live in the UK, you’ll need to apply for entry clearance for the child as a Liberian child coming for adoption in the UK.

Money

Liberia remains a predominantly cash-based society, especially with street vendors.

Credit and debit cards are not generally accepted in Liberia, except for a few of the major hotels and some larger supermarkets. They may be unable to process card payments when internet connections are poor. Not many places accept travellers cheques. Mobile money apps offer an alternative way to make…

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. It does not apply between Canada and Liberia. If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Liberia by an abducting parent:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Liberia to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies. Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Driving

You should carry an international driving permit. The use of a seatbelt is mandatory. Convoys carrying government officials travel at high speeds, and you must pull over and turn off your headlights if you see one approaching. You should wait a few minutes after the convoy passes before continuing on. International Driving Permit

Money

The currency is the Liberian dollar (LRD). The economy is cash-based. Many merchants accept U.S. dollars for payment. Visa and MasterCard are accepted at some of the larger hotels. ATMs are scarcely available and only in Monrovia. You can only use a Visa card to withdraw cash from an ATM. Bring sufficient funds in U.S. dollars to cover expenses.

Read more advice for LGBT+ travellers.

Mobile money apps offer an alternative way to make payments, but not all vendors use these. There are a few ATMs that accept Visa cards in Monrovia, including in the two main hotels used by international visitors. ATMs often run out of money or only have certain denominations. Foreign exchange and banking facilities are limited. Western Union and MoneyGram can transfer money from the UK, although there are very few offices outside Monrovia. Liberia’s banks can experience cash shortages of both US dollars and Liberian dollars. Banks and foreign exchange facilities may not be able to pay out transferred funds or fulfil ATM withdrawals. Bring sufficient funds, in US dollars, to cover all expenses.

Visa

  • Français résidant en France ou dans un pays où le Libéria dispose d’une représentation diplomatique : demande en personne ou par écrit auprès de l’ambassade du Libéria compétente ;

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Liberia’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Liberia set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Liberian Embassy in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

To enter Liberia, your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

You must have a visa to enter Liberia.

Applying for a visa

Apply for a visa to visit Liberia through the Liberian Embassy in the UK . Your passport must have at least 6 months validity remaining when you make your application.

Once in Liberia, you can apply for an extension of your existing visa for a maximum of 60 days. To apply for an extension in Monrovia, you should visit the Immigration Office at Gbarngaye’s Town, 24th Street, Sinkor. You’ll need to take your passport and pay a fee of 25 US dollars.

If you’re staying outside Montserrado County, contact your local Immigration Office to get a visa extension authorised by the Immigration County Commander.

To stay longer you must apply for a Liberian residence permit .

Vaccine requirements

As part of the visa application process, you need to provide a certificate to prove you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination.

For more details about medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, including yellow fever, see TravelHealthPro’s Liberia guide .

Ebola Screening

On 25 May, the Liberia Ministry of Health and National Public Health Institute issued a Travel Advisory note announcing heighted health screening measures for travellers arriving into Liberia, due to outbreaks of Ebola in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) have declared this a Public Health Emergency of International Concern .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Liberia. You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Taking money into Liberia

Declare cash or travellers cheques if the value is 10,000 US dollars or more.

Taking money out of Liberia

You cannot take more than 7,500 US dollars in cash out of the country.

For each risk, the official texts themselves: what is happening, then, where they say so, what to do.

CrimeMODERATE

What the texts say · The crime rate in Liberia is high. Foreign nationals have been mugged in the Mamba Point and Sinkor areas of Monrovia, where most international visitors stay.

What they advise:
  • Foreigners have reported assault and robbery happening in taxis.
  • You can take steps to reduce your personal risk by: not carrying valuables or large sums of money in public.
Foreign Office
TransportHIGH

What the texts say · Do not use commercial taxis, buses, motorbike taxis, informal taxis or three-wheelers (“kékés”) due to low maintenance standards, increased risk of crime and dangerous driving practices. If you’re involved in a traffic accident, be aware that local crowds can become hostile and may attempt to attack you.

What they advise:
  • Since public transportation to Monrovia is not reliable, arrange to be met upon arrival at the airport and dropped off on departure by reliable contacts.
  • In the event of an accident, exercise extreme caution.
  • Pull over to the side of the road immediately when instructed by security forces travelling with VIP convoys.
Global Affairs Canada · Foreign Office
Nature and climateMODERATE

What the texts say · The rainy season extends from May to November. Heavy rains may result in localized flash flooding and roads may become impassable in affected areas.

What they advise:
  • Monitor local media for the latest updates, including road conditions.
  • Stay away from flooded areas.
  • Follow instructions from local authorities, including evacuation orders.

FDFA (Switzerland) — transport and specific advice, in French

Transport and infrastructure

Is an Amex, Visa or Mastercard enough in Liberia?

At today's level 2/4, card by card:

  • Amex Platinum — No area exclusion at this level — but three written limits: deductible and prior approval, 90-day cap, advance under conditions.
  • Visa — No express area exclusion — but a €156,000 cap, 90 days, and the war/instability exclusion in the background.
  • Mastercard — No exclusion in play at this level — but a €155,000 cap and 90 covered days.
  • Three lines to read in your notice: the duration (often 90 days per trip), the settlement (reimbursement afterwards or direct payment of the hospital) and the area exclusion at level 4/4.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Liberia?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — No area exclusion at this level — compare cap, deductible and covered duration.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.
  • Have your IPID number or the PDF of the terms and ask an expert to call you back: the answer is in the document, not in the brochure.

How do I use the medical network on this page?

The page reads hospitals, pharmacies and doctors from OpenStreetMap, around the point you choose.

  • Type your city, hotel or beach: the map re-centres, 24/7 emergency rooms come first.
  • Each row gives the phone when the source publishes it, the nearest street, directions and the Google Maps listing.
  • The PDF briefing repeats the same places, numbered on a printable map.
  • No customer reviews: OpenStreetMap has none, and we invent none.

Which vaccines and health precautions for Liberia?

The sourced detail is under Medical network › Health: vaccines, diseases present, altitude, outbreaks.

  • France Diplomatie reports in the country: dengue, malaria, chikungunya — mosquito protection day and night.

  • Carry your medicines in their packaging, with a prescription using international non-proprietary names (France Diplomatie).

Can I be treated in Liberia, or will I be evacuated?

0.2 physicians per 1,000 people (2022) versus 4.5 in Switzerland.

  • 1.6 hospital beds per 1,000 people versus 4.4 in Switzerland (World Bank).
  • With 0.2 physicians per 1,000 people (96% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover. Health spending of 104 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.
  • When the local facility is not enough, Maximum's medical team decides the evacuation to a suitable centre, and pays for it (art. 6.2.2).

Liberia: safety, in figures?

Comparable figures (homicides, roads, incidents) are under Safety & risks › Incidents.

  • On the road, 18 times more deaths than in Switzerland: road crashes are the leading cause of death of healthy travellers (CDC) — seat belt, no night driving, a driver or a taxi from a rank.
