How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

All travelers should take steps to prevent mosquito bites. Chikungunya vaccination is generally not recommended. Travelers who wish to consider vaccination can visit “What to consider before traveling” on the chikungunya vaccines page to learn more.

Hepatitis ACDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Belize. Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series. Travelers allergic to a vaccine component should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.

Hepatitis BCDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers younger than 60 years old traveling to Belize. Unvaccinated travelers 60 years and older may get vaccinated before traveling to Belize.

MeaslesCDC ↗

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult your doctor or international vaccination centre at least eight weeks before departure to assess your health and receive vaccination recommendations. Foreign Office
  • Ensure you are up to date with French vaccination calendar, particularly against diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis, pertussis and measles; carry your vaccination record as some countries may request it. France Diplomatie
  • Pack only necessary medications in original packaging with original labels, accompanied by a prescription listing medicines in international non-proprietary names; verify these medications are authorised in your destination country. France Diplomatie
  • Medical facilities in Belize are limited; serious cases are normally evacuated to the United States at the patient's expense, so obtain appropriate travel insurance covering local treatment and medical evacuation. Foreign Office
  • Protect yourself against mosquito-borne diseases by wearing long clothing, applying insect repellent to exposed skin, using impregnated mosquito nets, and eliminating standing water around your accommodation. France Diplomatie
  • Follow strict food and water hygiene: wash hands regularly with soap and water, eat only well-cooked foods, peel fruits and vegetables, avoid raw shellfish and cold buffets, and drink only bottled or boiled water. France Diplomatie

  • Fièvre jaune : obligatoire pour les voyageurs en provenance des zones d'endémie ;
  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales ;
  • Chikungunya : en cas d’épidémie ou de séjour prolongé ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Updated 11.03.2026

Exercise increased caution in Belize due to crime . Some areas have increased risk. Please read the entire Travel Advisory.

Crime

Isolated incidents of violent crime can happen even during the day and in tourist areas, though the south side of Belize City has historically had the highest concentration of violent crime. Crimes include sexual assault, home invasions, armed robberies, and murder. Much of this violence is linked to gangs.

  • Local police lack the resources and training to respond effectively to serious crimes.
  • Most crimes remain unresolved and unprosecuted.
  • Emergency medical services are usually unavailable or significantly delayed. Serious injuries or illnesses normally require medical evacuation to another country.

Due to security risks, U.S. citizens should follow the same guidance as government employees while traveling. U.S. government employees are strongly discouraged from:

  • Traveling to the south side of Belize City from the Haulover Creek Canal to Fabers Road.
  • Driving between cities in Belize after dark.
  • Read the Travel Guidance section page for additional information on travel to Belize.

Reconsider travel to Southside Belize City due to crime .

  • de suivre l’évolution des ouragans sur le site du National Hurricane Center (en anglais) ;
  • de se conformer aux recommandations d’usage (cf. fiche Infos pratiques sur les Risques climatiques ) ;

  • ne pas se déplacer à pied hors des axes principaux, surtout de nuit ; privilégier les déplacements en taxi (la nuit à plusieurs) ; ne pas se déplacer seul ; ne pas s’attarder dans les rues et les bars ;
  • ne pas porter de bijoux ou d’objets de valeur ;
  • utiliser les services de guides qualifiés ou d’agences de voyages pour les randonnées hors des sentiers battus ;

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Belize

Although there is no recent history of terrorism in Belize, attacks cannot be ruled out.

Political situation

Political demonstrations take place in Belize City and Belmopan, but most are peaceful. Follow the instructions of local authorities, monitor local media and avoid large gatherings and demonstrations.

Crime

Investigations can take several weeks, police capacity is limited and most crimes remain unsolved and unprosecuted.

Belize has one of the highest per capita murder rates in the world. Other violent crime, including armed robbery, shootings, domestic abuse and sexual assault are also a concern.

Serious gang-related violence occurs most frequently in Belize City, particularly in the area to the south of the Haulover Creek (known as Southside). Tourists are not normally the targets of gang violence, but anyone near an incident could be affected. You should:

  • follow the advice of your hotel and local authorities
  • be watchful of your surroundings

Armed criminals have been active in the remote forested areas of Belize, particularly the border area with Guatemala and close to tourist sites there. However, the area is patrolled by the Belize Defence Force and there have been no reported incidents involving tourists.

Tourists, in general, are vulnerable to theft of cash, credit cards, phones and other personal belongings, including in tourist destinations such as San Pedro, Caye Caulker, Placencia and San Ignacio. You should:

  • avoid dark alleys
  • use ATMs located in well-lit public areas or inside a bank or business
  • keep valuables out of sight
  • be aware that wearing expensive jewellery could attract attention
  • use a qualified guide for trips off the beaten track
  • only use accommodation and campgrounds that appear genuine and established
Illegal drugs and prison sentences

Possession of illegal drugs can lead to a fine and prison sentence.

LGBT+ travellers

Same-sex activity between consenting adults is legal. The Immigration Act prohibits “homosexual” persons from entering the country but immigration authorities have not enforced that law. Tourist-friendly areas, including San Pedro and Ambergris Caye, are relatively open and welcoming to the LGBT+ community. Outside of these areas, LGBT+ couples, especially men, tend to be reluctant to display affection in public because of incidents of verbal or physical abuse which have been reported.

Swimming safety

There have been injuries and fatalities from adventure sports activities, including snorkelling and diving. The main causes have been inadequate safety precautions and severe weather conditions. Check local weather forecasts and only use registered and licensed operators.

Advisory summary

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Belize’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Belize set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Belize High Commission in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

To enter Belize, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ more than 3 months after the date you arrive. Some airlines may refuse boarding if the expiry date is not more than 6 months after the date you arrive.

Check with your travel provider to make sure your passport and other travel documents meet their requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual Citizenship .

Immigration and customs declaration form

All travellers transiting Belize through the Philip Goldson International Airport are required to complete an immigration and customs declaration form. Whilst paper declarations will still be accepted during the phased transition to a fully digital system, the Belizean authorities recommend completing the digital form prior to travel.

Visa requirements

You can visit Belize without a visa for 30 days.

If you want to extend your stay, it will cost 200 Belize dollars for each additional 30 days. You should go to the nearest office of the Belize Immigration and Nationality Department and request a new stamp.

Departure tax

If you leave Belize by land, or by water crossing to Guatemala or Mexico, you must pay a departure tax of 40 Belize dollars or 20 US dollars at the border. If leaving by air, the tax is usually included in the airfare.

Travelling with children

Children aged 17 and under who are travelling on their own, or with an adult who is not their parent, must carry a notarised letter to prove parental responsibility, or consent to travel from the parent or guardian. Children travelling with one parent must also have a notarised letter of authority from the other parent giving consent for travel.

Vaccine requirements

For details about medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, see TravelHealthPro’s Belize guide .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Belize. You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty. Items that need to be declared will be listed on the customs declaration form. Contact the Belize Customs and Excise Administration for more information.

FDFA (Switzerland) — transport and specific advice, in French

Transport and infrastructure

The health system — With 1.1 physicians per 1,000 people (76% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover. What is the official risk level in Belize today?

  • Is the whole country advised against? United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no (reading of 27 September 2026).
  • Contractually, only an FDFA, FOPH or WHO advisory against the trip opens Module A (art. 18.1) — that is not the case today.
  • International medical cover, 24/7 number saved, and a read of the areas named under Safety & risks before booking the itinerary.

What are the entry requirements for Belize with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): All COVID-19 measures have been lifted since 12 July 2022; medical insurance is no longer mandatory for tourism but remains strongly recommended. Travellers must stay in Gold Standard Hotels approved by authorities and present proof of reservation upon airport arrival. Passport must be valid for at least six months beyond arrival date; return or onward flight ticket required.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British citizens need a passport valid for at least three months beyond arrival; airlines may require six months validity. All travellers through Philip Goldson International Airport must complete an immigration and customs declaration form, preferably digital before travel. British citizens may stay visa-free for thirty days; extensions cost two hundred Belize dollars per additional thirty days from the Immigration and Nationality Department.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a Belize visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (EUR 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.
  • Attach it to the visa file; if in doubt about the format, write to us.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Belize?
