How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult your GP or a travel health clinic to assess your health and receive vaccine advice before travel; visit your dentist before departure. France Diplomatie
  • Pack a personal pharmacy with original packaging, labels, and an international non-proprietary name prescription; never use street-bought medicines. France Diplomatie
  • Avoid intra-gastric botulinum toxin injections for obesity in Istanbul or Izmir clinics due to severe botulism risk reported between late February and March 2023. France Diplomatie
  • Ensure routine French vaccines (diphtheria, tetanus, polio, whooping cough, measles) are up to date; consider hepatitis A, typhoid, tuberculosis, rabies, hepatitis B, or mpox vaccines depending on travel conditions. France Diplomatie
  • Prevent mosquito-borne diseases by wearing long clothing, using repellents, protecting accommodation, and eliminating standing water; pregnant women should consult a doctor before travel to affected areas. France Diplomatie
  • Only drink bottled or boiled water, avoid raw foods, and peel fruits and vegetables; wash hands frequently with soap or hydroalcoholic solution. France Diplomatie

  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Tuberculose : chez les enfants de moins de 15 ans en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Health — Foreign Office

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Dial 112 and ask for an ambulance.

Contact your insurance or medical assistance company promptly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

  • check the latest vaccine recommendations for Turkey
  • see where to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

See what health risks you’ll face in Turkey .

Altitude sickness is a risk in parts of Turkey. Read more about altitude sickness on TravelHealthPro .

Medication

The legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can be different in other countries.

British prescriptions are not accepted in pharmacies in Turkey. In some cases, you may be able to liaise with Turkish hospitals and your GP to arrange for a Turkish prescription for the equivalent medicine.

Some common medicines are controlled in Turkey. See more information about the documentation you need , or contact the nearest Turkish embassy or consulate.

Read best practice when travelling with medicines on TravelHealthPro .

Healthcare in Turkey

FCDO has a list of medical providers in Turkey where some staff will speak English.

The European Health Insurance Card and Global Health Insurance card are not valid in Turkey.

Travel and mental health

Read FCDO guidance on travel and mental health . There is also mental health guidance on TravelHealthPro .

Medical tourism

Medical tourism is when people travel to have medical, surgical or dental treatment abroad. Cosmetic surgery, dental procedures and cardiac surgery are the most common procedures for medical tourists.

The standard of medical facilities and available treatments can vary widely globally and also within countries. We are aware of 7 British nationals having died in Turkey in 2025 following medical procedures. Some British nationals have also experienced complications and needed further treatment or surgery following their procedure.

If you are considering travelling to Turkey for medical, surgical or dental treatment:

  • discuss plans with your UK doctor, dentist or clinician before going ahead
  • do your own research - private companies have a financial interest in booking your treatment and their literature should not be your only source of information

See more details about the risks of going abroad for elective surgery .

The Turkish Ministry of Health provides a list of its approved medical providers on the HealthTurkiye website .

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office ( FCDO ) does not give any endorsement of the competence or suitability of any practitioner or facility.

Regional tensions

The US and Iran announced a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on 17 June in relation to the conflict in the Middle East, however the situation in the Middle East remains unpredictable. Since 8 July there have been strikes and retaliatory attacks by Iran in a number of locations across the region against US military and civilian infrastructure. There is a risk of more attacks and unforeseen escalation in the region. Before the ceasefire, the Iranian regime had stated its intention to target locations associated with the US and Israel, including organisations, businesses, facilities, and institutions.

British nationals currently in the Middle East should be prepared for possible flight cancellations, periodic airspace closures, and potential travel disruptions, and should:

  • read If you’re affected by a crisis abroad - GOV.UK . This includes guidance on “how to prepare for a crisis” with suggestions on what you might include in your emergency supplies and “what to do in a crisis”
  • sign up to  FCDO  Travel Advice email alerts
  • follow advice from the local authorities
  • monitor local and international media for the latest information, including updates relating to airports and airspace which could close at short notice
  • stay away from areas around security or military facilities
  • keep your departure plans under review, and ensure your travel documents are up to date
  • if advised to take shelter, stay indoors or find the nearest safe building or designated shelter. An interior stairwell or a room with as few external walls or windows as possible may provide additional protection. The greatest risk is from falling debris caused by intercepts, and you are safest inside a secure structure. Do not approach or touch any drone or missile fragments or unusual objects

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

Terrorism in Turkey

Terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Turkey.

Most terrorist attacks have occurred in southeast Turkey, Ankara and Istanbul. You should remain aware of your surroundings, keep up to date with local media reports and follow the advice of local authorities.

See Regional risks for details about the areas in south-east Turkey where FCDO advises against travel.

There have been several attacks involving knives, firearms and explosives. Attacks could be indiscriminate including in places visited by foreign nationals, such as:

  • public buildings
  • places of worship
  • airports
  • large public gatherings, including major events, public holidays, religious occasions

Examples of recent attacks include:

  • in April 2026, two police officers were injured after three gunmen opened fire near a building housing the Israeli Consulate in Istanbul
  • in September 2025, three police officers were killed and three people injured in an attack on a police station by a lone gunman in Izmir
  • in October 2024, five people were killed and 22 injured in an attack on the Turkish Aerospace Industries’ facility in Kahramankazan, 40km northwest of central Ankara
  • in February 2024, one person was killed in an armed attack on the Çağlayan courthouse in Istanbul by the terrorist group DHKP/C
  • in January 2024, one person was killed by two gunmen in the Santa Maria Catholic Church in Sariyer, in an attack claimed by Daesh
  • in 2022, six people were killed in an explosion in central Istanbul

Extremist groups based in Syria, including Daesh and Al-Qaeda linked groups, have the capacity to carry out attacks in Turkey. Daesh has previously targeted border crossings and nearby locations on the Syrian side of the border.

Political situation

Regular demonstrations and protests are currently taking place in Istanbul and other cities across Turkey. Demonstrations may become violent. The police response has included use of tear gas and water cannons.

Events in Israel and Palestine have led to heightened tensions in the region and in locations across Turkey. Demonstrations continue to occur outside diplomatic missions connected to the conflict in major cities, particularly Israeli diplomatic missions in Ankara and Istanbul.

Avoid all demonstrations and leave the area if one develops. Local transport routes may be disrupted.

Protecting yourself and your belongings

Street robbery and pickpocketing are common in the major tourist areas of Istanbul. Be aware of your personal belongings and make sure they are always secure.

Counterfeit banknotes

Banks and money exchanges may not accept 50 or 100 US dollar bills, due to a reported surge in counterfeit banknotes of these denominations in Turkey. You should not accept these banknotes where possible.

Drink and food spiking

Be wary of strangers approaching you to change money, or to take you to a restaurant or nightclub. If strangers offer you food and drink these could be spiked. Buy your own drinks and always keep sight of them.

Local laws

You must abide by local laws. Learn about what you should do and how we can help if you are arrested or detained abroad.

Identification

Local authorities may request to see your identification at any time. If you fail to present valid documents upon request, you could face:

  • fines
  • arrest
  • detention
  • deportation
  • an entry ban for future travel into Türkiye

During your stay:

  • always carry valid identification (you must have the original, not only photocopies or digital versions)
  • keep a digital copy of your identification and travel documents in case they are seized or lost
  • follow the instructions of the authorities requesting the documents

If you are temporarily in Türkiye and carry more than one passport, you should carry the one that contains your entry stamp and valid visa. If you reside in Türkiye, you should carry your Turkish resident identification (Kimlik and/or Ikamet). Hotels are legally required to register foreign guests with the local police or gendarmerie. Your passport will be required at check-in.

Drugs

The use of illegal drugs is prohibited, including during transit. Penalties for possession, use or trafficking of illegal drugs, such as cannabis, are severe. Convicted offenders can expect lengthy jail sentences and heavy fines. Drugs, alcohol and travel

Lèse-majesté

It is illegal to denigrate, desecrate or insult the:

  • name or image of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Türkiye
  • president of the Republic of Türkiye
  • Turkish flag and national anthem
  • Turkish currency
  • Turkish government, state organs and institutions and its judicial bodies
  • police and military
Religious proselytism

Although religious proselytizing is not illegal, certain missionary activities could risk being interpreted as crimes defined under the Penal Code, such as blasphemy, insulting religious values, incitement against religion and disrupting public order. This may result in detention, fines and/or deportation.

Online activities and political discussions

Turkish authorities have detained and prosecuted people over public or published statements criticizing or protesting the government, state officials, the president and military operations. The same risk can apply to online activities, including what someone posts, shares or likes on social media. It can also include social media activity that took place in the past and outside Türkiye.

Photography

It is forbidden to photograph military or official installations. Avoid photographing public demonstrations, police officers or security forces. Cameras may be confiscated. Do not photograph people without their permission.

Exports

Turkish antiquities and other cultural artifacts that are considered of historical value or of national importance cannot be exported. Seek advice from the Turkish customs office if you want to export them. If the item can be exported, you will need a sales receipt and the official museum export certificate issued by the Turkish customs office.

Telecommunications

Access to some e-SIM services is restricted in Türkiye. Foreign cell phones must be registered with local authorities within 120 days. Otherwise, they will be restricted from connecting to local networks.

Persons with disabilities

Expect accessibility to be limited in transportation, lodging and general infrastructure.

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. The convention applies between Canada and Türkiye. If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Türkiye, and if the applicable conditions are met, you may apply for the return of your child to the Turkish court. If you are in this situation:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • contact the Central Authority for your province or territory of residence for information on starting an application under The Hague Convention
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Türkiye to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children's Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies. Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Driving

You should carry an international driving permit. For stays longer than 180 days, you must obtain a Turkish driver’s licence from the Turkish Security Directorate. You can bring a vehicle into Türkiye for up to 6 months with the proper documentation.

Driving laws

Penalties for drinking and driving include fines and a 6-month confiscation of your driver’s licence. Using a cell phone while driving is illegal and can lead to a fine. It is illegal to ride motorcycles and mopeds without wearing a helmet. Failure to wear one can result in a severe fine.

Dress and behaviour

Islamic practices and beliefs are closely adhered to in many parts of the country. In all places of worship, women must cover their heads with a scarf and all visitors must cover their arms and legs. Respect religious and social traditions to avoid offending local sensitivities.

E-sims

Access to some e-sim services is restricted in Turkey. Check with your provider before travelling.

Ramadan

Ramadan is a holy month for Muslims in Turkey. The next Ramadan will likely begin between early February and early March in 2027 and will last for 29 or 30 days. Get more advice when you arrive from your tour guide, hotel or business contacts. During this time, it may cause offence if you:

  • eat, drink, smoke or chew gum in public in the daytime, including in your car
  • play loud music or dance
  • swear in public

You should also:

  • check opening hours of shops and restaurants
  • be aware that if hotels and restaurants are providing food or drink in fasting hours, they may separate you from Islamic guests, for example with screens
  • follow local dress codes – clothing that does not meet local dress codes may cause more offence at this time
  • be aware that driving may be erratic, particularly when people are trying to get home at dusk
  • be patient and show tolerance – fasting can cause tiredness, particularly during the late afternoon and early evening
Personal ID

It is illegal not to carry some form of photographic ID in Turkey. Always carry your passport or residence permit. In some busy areas, especially Istanbul, the authorities may stop people for ID checks. There are also several police checkpoints on main roads across Turkey. Cooperate with officials conducting checks.

Children and accommodation

There are some reports of hotels refusing to check-in children aged 17 and under who are not accompanied by a parent or guardian, unless written parental consent has been provided (and in some cases notarised). Check with your accommodation provider in advance.

Dress code

Dress modestly if you’re visiting a mosque or a religious shrine to avoid causing offence.

Personal injury claims

There are reports of tourists being encouraged to submit a claim for personal injury if they have experienced gastric illness in Turkey. Find out what you can do if you have suffered a personal injury on the Citizens Advice website. Only make a claim if you have genuinely suffered from injury or illness. If you make a false or fraudulent claim, you may face legal proceedings in the UK or Turkey.

Smoking bans

Smoking is illegal on public transport and in all indoor workplaces and public places. Smoking is restricted in some outdoor areas where cultural, artistic, sports or entertainment activities are held.

Illegal drugs

Illegal drugs, including cannabis, carry severe penalties. You should expect a long prison sentence of 4 to 24 years and heavy fines for possessing, using or smuggling illegal drugs, including when transiting through airports. Airports in Turkey have excellent technology and security for detecting illegal items. This is also used to scan the baggage of transiting passengers.

Stray dogs

Most towns and cities have stray dogs. Packs congregate in parks and wastelands and can be aggressive. Take care and do not approach stray dogs. If you’re bitten, get medical advice immediately. Rabies and other animal borne diseases are present in Turkey.

Sale of antiquities

Buying or exporting antiquities is illegal. You could be fined and receive a prison sentence of 5 to 12 years. Some historical items found at local markets and in antique shops can be sold within Turkey but are illegal to export. Confirm the status of antique items before you buy them.

Using cameras

Do not take photographs of or near military or official installations. Ask for permission before photographing people.

LGBT+ travellers

Same-sex sexual activity is legal in Turkey. However, some parts of the country are socially conservative and public displays of affection may attract unwanted attention. Same-sex relationships are not legally recognised. Since 2015, authorities have banned or dispersed Pride events. Anti-LGBT+ statements by senior public figures have increased in recent years, and restrictions on LGBT+ organisations have increased. Turkish authorities have carried out operations against LGBT+ organisations and activists across the country. Read more advice for LGBT+ travellers.

Comments about the nation and flag

It is illegal to insult the Turkish nation or the national flag. Insulting the President or the founder of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, is also a criminal offence. These laws can apply to comments or images online no matter where you were or when you posted them. Defacing Turkish banknotes is also illegal. Offences under these laws are punishable by a prison sentence of between 6 months and 3 years.

  • doivent être munis d’un passeport ou d’une carte nationale d’identité dont la durée de validité devra dépasser d’au moins 150 jours la date de l’entrée en Turquie ;

Long séjour

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of the current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Turkey set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Turkish Embassy in the UK .

Entering Turkey across the land border from Iran

The border remains open visa-free for people travelling on UK or Iranian passports (for stays of up to 90 days). If you are a British national intending to cross the land border from Iran into Turkey, you must request facilitation from the British Embassy in Ankara  by contacting the  FCDO  before travelling to the border. You must state which border point you intend to use and provide personal details (name, date of birth, details of travel document used to enter Turkey). Also indicate whether you are contacting from Iran or from the UK on behalf of a relative.

The Turkish authorities advise that the Iranians have closed the crossing point at Esendere-Serow on the Iranian side to daily traders entering and exiting over the course of a day.

The usual  entry requirements  will apply, including that British nationals can enter without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

If you intend to leave Iran overland, you do so at your own risk. In Iran, holding a British passport or having perceived connections to the UK can be reason enough for the Iranian authorities to detain you.

Read more  FCDO  advice  If you’re affected by a crisis abroad - GOV.UK .

Passport validity requirements

To enter Turkey, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 150 days after the date you arrive and at least 1 blank page.

If you live in Turkey, your passport must be valid for 6 months from the date you arrive.

If entering at a land border, make sure officials stamp and date your passport at the border crossing.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

You can visit Turkey without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, for business or tourism.

If you hold a British citizen passport, you can visit Turkey without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, for business or tourism

If you hold another type of British passport , you will need a visa and should check visa requirements with the Turkish Embassy or Consulate General before you travel.

To enter Turkey for education, employment or medical purposes, or in other special cases, check the information on applying for a visa . If you plan to work in Turkey, make sure you have the correct permits.

FDFA (Switzerland) — transport and specific advice, in French

Transport and infrastructure

Is the whole of Türkiye advised against, or only some areas?

An area advised against does not rule out the country.

  • Foreign Office, regional risks: “This section has safety advice for regions of Turkey. It only covers regions where FCDO has specific advice. You should also read FCDO ’s overall travel advice . Turkey-Syria border FCDO advises against all travel within 10km of the Turkey-Syria border.…”

What are the entry requirements for Türkiye with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): French nationals may enter Turkey for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without a visa, provided they hold a valid national ID card or a passport valid for at least 150 days beyond the entry date. Minors traveling without one parent must carry a passport or national ID card valid for at least 150 days beyond entry and a signed parental travel authorization form from service-public.fr; school trips require a headteacher’s attestation. French-Turkish dual nationals must use a valid French travel document (passport or ID card) to re-enter France; otherwise, they may be required to stay in Turkey until a new document is issued by the French consulates in Ankara or Istanbul.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British citizens entering Turkey from Iran overland must request facilitation from the British Embassy in Ankara via FCDO before travel, specifying the border point and providing personal details and travel document information. The Esendere-Serow border crossing from Iran to Turkey is closed to daily traders on the Iranian side. British nationals may enter Turkey visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period, but your passport must have at least 150 days’ validity beyond your arrival date and at least one blank page.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Türkiye?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.

What Maximum knows

The 207 country pages — hospitals, pharmacies, police, embassies, emergency numbers, official advice from four governments, health, safety in figures, events in progress — read around the city you name. Your policy — benefits, the six steps, claims, articles. The site — prices, certificate, subscription. Nothing else: what it does not know, it says so and hands you to an adviser.

Travelling to Istanbul, Ankara: what changes

The published advisory level is national, but risk is not: business hubs (Istanbul, Ankara) do not share the profile of border areas. The medical network shown on this page is computed around Ankara — real hospitals, evacuation airport and live alerts. Before a specific trip, always cross-check your country of residence's advisory: that is what your policy cites.

Same advisory level: Belgium · Belize · Bolivia · Bosnia and Herzegovina · Botswana · Brazil

Cross-check with official sources
U.S. State Department → UK FCDO → France Diplomatie → DFAE (Suisse) →

The displayed level comes from the State Department, checked every morning. Before departure, always cross-check your country of residence's advisory: that is what your policy cites.

The level shown is the official U.S. Department of State level, checked daily. Maximum Insurance is an insurance distributor — general information, not personal advice.
