How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

Recommended vaccines and medicines12

Routine vaccinesCDC ↗

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include Chickenpox (Varicella) Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (DTaP, Tdap, or Td) Flu (influenza) Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) Polio Shingles

COVID-19CDC ↗

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines. Please see  Your COVID-19 Vaccination  for more information.

CholeraCDC ↗

Areas of active cholera transmission are  localized to Kunene (last case reported 6-9 months ago) and Otozondjupa (last case reported 3-6 months ago) in Namibia. Cholera is rare in travelers.  Certain factors  may increase the risk of getting cholera or having severe disease ( more information ). Avoiding unsafe food and water and washing your hands can also help prevent cholera.

Hepatitis ACDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Namibia. Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series. Travelers allergic to a vaccine component should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.

Hepatitis BCDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers of all ages traveling to Namibia.

MalariaCDC ↗

CDC recommends that travelers going to certain areas of Namibia take prescription medicine to prevent malaria. Depending on the medicine you take, you will need to start taking this medicine multiple days before your trip, as well as during and after your trip. Talk to your doctor about which malaria medication you should take.

MeaslesCDC ↗

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

MonkeypoxCDC ↗

Monkeypox vaccination is recommended for any adult who anticipates any of the following activities during travel: Sexual or intimate contact with a new partner Sexual or intimate contact at a commercial sex venue, like a sex club or bathhouse Sexual or intimate contact in exchange for money, goods, drugs, or other trade Sexual or intimate contact in association with a large public event, such as a rave, party, or…

PolioCDC ↗

In Namibia, poliovirus has been identified in the past year. Travelers to Namibia are at increased risk of exposure to poliovirus.

RabiesCDC ↗

Dogs infected with rabies are commonly found in Namibia. Rabies is also present in some terrestrial wildlife species. If rabies exposures occur while in Namibia, rabies vaccines are typically available throughout most of the country.

TyphoidCDC ↗

Recommended for most travelers. Typhoid vaccine is not 100% effective. Practicing safe food and water habits , including washing hands at key times , can also help prevent typhoid fever .

Yellow FeverCDC ↗

CDC recommendations: Vaccine is not recommended. Country entry requirements: Direct travel from United States: Vaccine is not required. Travel from countries with risk for YF virus transmission: Vaccine is required for travelers ≥9 months old; this includes >12-hour airport transits or layovers in countries with risk for YF virus transmission. 3 Updated April 23, 2025 See footnotes

CDC Travelers' Health, re-read weekly — the recommendation depends on your age, vaccines and itinerary: confirm it with a doctor or a travel clinic 4 to 6 weeks before departure.CDC ↗read 10.10.2026

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult a doctor or international vaccination center at least 8 weeks before travel to assess your health and get vaccination recommendations, including for diphtheria, tetanus, polio, and measles.
  • Carry necessary personal medications in their original packaging with an international common name prescription, and verify their legality in Namibia before departure.
  • Private hospitals in Namibia offer comprehensive care but may require upfront payment or financial guarantee, and some may not recognize all travel insurance policies.
  • Be aware of HIV/AIDS prevalence in Namibia, which is significantly higher than in the UK, and take precautions to avoid exposure.
  • Altitude sickness is a risk in parts of Namibia, and the hot, dry climate can cause dehydration and skin problems; carry sufficient drinking water.
  • Emergency medical numbers are 211111 in Windhoek and 10111 elsewhere; contact your insurer immediately if referred for treatment.

  • Fièvre jaune : obligatoire pour les voyageurs en provenance de zones d’endémie ;
  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Tuberculose : chez les enfants de moins de 15 ans en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales ;
  • Chikungunya : en cas d’épidémie ou de séjour prolongé ;
  • Dengue : en cas d’épidémie active ou de séjour prolongé en zone endémique ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Exercise increased caution in Namibia due to crime and health .

Crime

Non-violent crimes of opportunity are common. Most crimes against foreigners are crimes of opportunity, like purse snatching, pickpocketing, and smash and grabs from unoccupied parked vehicles. Potentially violent crimes are possible, including home invasions and armed robberies. Weapons most commonly used by criminals are knives and machetes.

Health

Namibia is sparsely populated. Many visitors travel to remote areas far from emergency services and medical facilities. Health facilities are limited and may not have adequate supplies of basic medications, especially outside of large cities.

Avertissement

  • ne pas laisser ses effets personnels ou bagages sans surveillance ou visibles dans un véhicule ;
  • se déplacer en groupe autant que possible ;
  • ne pas porter d’objets de valeur, en particulier dans les lieux publics ;
  • ne pas mettre d’objets de valeur dans les sacs à dos ;
  • ne pas porter de sac à main mais se doter d’une petite sacoche visible contenant un peu de monnaie et quelques objets sans valeur qui seront sacrifiés en cas d’agression ;
  • ne pas se départir de sa carte bancaire, au restaurant par exemple ;
  • ne pas se déplacer avec tous ses papiers d’identité sur soi : utiliser des photocopies et déposer ses documents d’identité dans un lieu sécurisé ;
  • circuler avec les portières verrouillées et les vitres fermées ;
  • ne pas prendre d’auto-stoppeur ;
  • aux feux rouges et dans les embouteillages, garder suffisamment d’espace avec le véhicule de devant afin de pouvoir quitter la file rapidement en cas de danger ;
  • ne pas s’arrêter sans raisons suite à une collision manifestement provoquée de manière délibérée (contourner les accidents et les obstacles) ou si un piéton indique un problème sur le véhicule. Dans ce cas, chercher à s’écarter rapidement de la zone pour rejoindre un lieu sécurisé afin d’effectuer les vérifications en toute sécurité (station-service par exemple) ;
  • se déplacer en ville (notamment à Windhoek et à Swakopmund) de préférence en voiture de location ou en taxis recommandés par des professionnels du tourisme (beaucoup d’agressions sont le fait de taxis indélicats à la conduite hasardeuse) ;
  • ne jamais se rendre dans les townships sans être accompagné de personnes de confiance connaissant les lieux ;

  • déplacez-vous, si possible, en groupe (voyages, promenades, etc.) et évitez les promenades nocturnes;
  • ne visitez pas les townships sans vous faire accompagner d'une personne de confiance connaissant les lieux;
  • ne portez pas de sommes importantes ou d'objets de valeur sur vous (montre, bijoux, etc.);
  • déposez vos papiers dans le coffre-fort de l'hôtel (passeport, billets d'avion, etc.) et n'emportez avec vous que des photocopies;
  • utilisez avec prudence votre carte de crédit, des escroqueries peuvent arriver;
  • faites preuve de prudence si vous utilisez les distributeurs automatiques d’argent , car ils peuvent être manipulés à des fins criminelles;
  • la nuit, renoncez aux déplacements à travers le pays;
  • gardez les vitres de votre véhicule relevées et les portières verrouillées, surtout près de grandes foules, p. ex. près des marchés;
  • assurez-vous que votre voiture de location soit bien fermée à clé, si vous la verrouillez au moyen d’une télécommande. Certaines télécommandes ont la même fréquence et peuvent être utilisées par des criminels pour annuler le verrouillage pendant qu’une autre personne croit fermer sa voiture;
  • faites preuve d'une vigilance particulière dans les aires de repos non surveillées bordant la route nationale;
  • faites preuve de vigilance lorsque vous portez secours à un véhicule en panne en-dehors des agglomérations; il peut cacher une embuscade;
  • ne prenez pas de taxi la nuit;

Namibian Meteorological Service World Meteorological Organization (WMO)

Terrorism in Namibia

Although there’s no recent history of terrorism in Namibia, attacks cannot be ruled out.

Protecting yourself and your belongings

Muggers often target tourists in Windhoek. Attacks may be violent and can take place at any time of day and in busy city-centre locations. To reduce your personal risk:

  • be aware of your surroundings, especially after dark
  • keep your valuables and cash out of sight or use a hotel safe
  • do not change large sums of money in busy public areas
Vehicle crime

Gangs sometimes try to enter vehicles at busy intersections in Windhoek. Theft from vehicles, particularly at service stations, is common. To reduce the risks:

  • do not leave your vehicle unattended at fuel stops
  • keep car doors locked and windows shut, especially in heavy traffic
  • keep valuables off the seats and out of sight

To reduce the risk of robberies from taxis:

  • do not hail taxis from the street, particularly in Windhoek
  • ask your hotel, guest house or tour operator to recommend a reputable taxi company
  • do not enter townships at night, unless you are with someone with local knowledge
Credit card skimming

There have been cases of credit card skimming at some hotels and lodges. Always keep your card in sight when paying and check your statement.

Personal ID

Always carry UK photo ID. You may need to show ID at police checkpoints in Windhoek and other major towns and cities. Keep copies of the photo page of your passport and important documents separately in a safe place.

Photography

Photography of sensitive installations is prohibited. This includes:

  • military sites
  • government buildings, including the President’s official residence
  • airports and harbours

Dress and behaviour

To avoid offending local sensitivities:

  • dress conservatively
  • behave discreetly
  • respect religious and social traditions
International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. It does not apply between Canada and Namibia. If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Namibia by an abducting parent:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Namibia to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies. Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Driving

Traffic drives on the left. You may drive in Namibia with your valid Canadian driver’s licence, provided it is in English. However, and particularly if your licence is in French, it is strongly recommended that you obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) in Canada before your departure, since it cannot be obtained once in Namibia. Without an IDP, it can be extremely difficult to obtain car insurance for rentals. Insurance companies and rental car agencies may require an IDP or Namibian driver’s licence to honour insurance claims, even if such proof was not requested when purchasing the insurance policy. If renting a car, pay particular attention to the insurance coverage. Many standard insurance policies do not cover single-vehicle accidents, which are the most common type in Namibia. Ensure that you have comprehensive insurance coverage. Penalties for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs are severe. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.079%. A charge of homicide can be made against a driver involved in an accident resulting in death. International Driving Permit

Money

The currency is the Namibian dollar (NAD). The South African rand (ZAR) is also accepted. Major credit cards are widely accepted in cities, and most ATMs are linked to international networks. Cash is necessary outside urban centres and at gas stations.

Visas

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Namibia’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Namibia set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Namibian High Commission in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

To enter Namibia, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive. It must also have at least 3 blank pages. If you’re travelling to Namibia through South Africa read the South Africa travel advice .

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

From 1 April 2025 you will need a visa to visit Namibia. The Namibian authorities have launched a visa on arrival scheme, which is extended to UK passport holders.

You can either apply for a visa on arrival when you arrive at a Port of Entry for Namibia, or you can apply online before you travel for an e-visa. For either route, the cost is 1,600 Namibian dollars for travellers over 11 years old. Children between the ages of 11 to 6 will will be charged 800 Namibian dollars. Children under the age of 6 will not be charged a fee for a visa on arrival. When granted a visa on arrival, you will receive a multiple entry visa valid for the period that you have requested.

If you plan to work or volunteer, or if you want to stay longer, you must apply for the appropriate visa. These categories are not covered by the visa on arrival process.

Applying for a visa on arrival

Full details on how to apply for the online e-Visa for Visa on Arrival, including the online application form, can be found at Visa On Arrival .

This link also includes information on the process for the application and the documentation required.

Applying for other visa categories

Apply through the Namibian High Commission in the UK .

Make sure you get your passport stamped.

Make sure the date on your entry stamp and the amount of time you have been given to stay is correct. Immigration officials will check these details when you leave Namibia.

The Namibian authorities could detain, arrest or fine you if you overstay or have an incorrect or missing entry stamp in your passport.

Travelling with children aged 17 and under

If you’re a parent travelling with children aged 17 and under, you must carry their:

  • valid passport
  • full birth certificate with both parents’ details (original or certified copy)

Namibian immigration officials will not accept an abridged (short) birth certificate. If your child was born in the UK, you can order a full unabridged birth certificate online .

If you’re a legal guardian and your name is not on the birth certificate, you will need to have documentation to prove…

FDFA (Switzerland) — transport and specific advice, in French

Transport and infrastructure

• Travel policy — No area exclusion at this level — compare cap, deductible and covered duration.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.
  • Have your IPID number or the PDF of the terms and ask an expert to call you back: the answer is in the document, not in the brochure.

How do I use the medical network on this page?

The page reads hospitals, pharmacies and doctors from OpenStreetMap, around the point you choose.

  • Type your city, hotel or beach: the map re-centres, 24/7 emergency rooms come first.
  • Each row gives the phone when the source publishes it, the nearest street, directions and the Google Maps listing.
  • The PDF briefing repeats the same places, numbered on a printable map.
  • No customer reviews: OpenStreetMap has none, and we invent none.

Which vaccines and health precautions for Namibia?

The sourced detail is under Medical network › Health: vaccines, diseases present, altitude, outbreaks.

  • CDC (Travelers' Health), depending on the trip: Routine vaccines, COVID-19, Cholera, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Malaria, Measles.
  • France Diplomatie reports in the country: dengue, malaria, chikungunya — mosquito protection day and night.
  • See a doctor or a travel clinic 8 weeks before departure (Foreign Office).
  • Carry your medicines in their packaging, with a prescription using international non-proprietary names (France Diplomatie).

Can I be treated in Namibia, or will I be evacuated?

0.6 physicians per 1,000 people (2022) versus 4.5 in Switzerland.

  • With 0.6 physicians per 1,000 people (87% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover. Health spending of 397 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.
  • When the local facility is not enough, Maximum's medical team decides the evacuation to a suitable centre, and pays for it (art. 6.2.2).

Namibia: safety, in figures?

11.2 homicides per 100,000 people (2021) versus 0.6 in Switzerland and 1.3 in France.

  • 34.8 road deaths per 100,000 people versus 2.2 in Switzerland (World Bank, WHO).
  • The homicide rate is 19 times Switzerland's: violence is a real risk there, concentrated in the areas named by the official advisories. On the road, 16 times more deaths than in Switzerland: road crashes are the leading cause of death of healthy travellers (CDC) — seat belt, no night driving, a driver or a taxi from a rank.

Which laws and customs should I know in Namibia?

Local laws apply to every traveller; here is what the official texts say.

  • Canadian travellers must carry photo identification and a photocopy of their passport and visa, as local authorities may request to see identification at any time.
  • Obtain a permit from the Namibia Civil Aviation Authority to import and operate a drone, as the approval process can take several weeks.
  • Exporting minerals, cultural items, and wildlife products is strictly regulated and requires prior approval from local authorities; offenders face heavy fines or imprisonment.
  • Photography of military sites, government buildings, and airports is prohibited; seek permission before photographing individuals.
  • Canadian drivers should obtain an International Driving Permit before departure if their licence is not in English, as it is difficult to obtain in Namibia and may be required for car insurance.
