How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult your doctor or an international vaccination centre at least eight weeks before departure to assess your health and receive vaccination recommendations. France Diplomatie
  • Ensure you are up to date with French vaccination calendar, particularly against diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis, pertussis and measles; carry your vaccination record as some countries may request it. France Diplomatie
  • Carry only necessary medications in original packaging with original labels, accompanied by a prescription with international common names; verify that your medications are authorised in Jamaica. France Diplomatie
  • Chikungunya and dengue transmission are confirmed in Jamaica; protect yourself against mosquito bites by wearing long clothing, applying repellent to exposed skin, and using insecticide-impregnated nets. France Diplomatie
  • Consume ackee only in restaurants; never harvest or cook it yourself as unripe ackee contains a potentially fatal toxin; seek immediate medical attention if you experience poisoning symptoms. France Diplomatie
  • Medical facilities in Jamaica vary in standard and may not meet UK standards; treatment is expensive and requires immediate cash payment; arrange appropriate travel insurance and contact your insurer if referred for treatment. Foreign Office

  • Fièvre jaune : obligatoire pour les voyageurs en provenance de zones d'endémie ;
  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Chikungunya : en cas d’épidémie ou de séjour prolongé ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Call 110 and ask for an ambulance.

Contact your insurance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

  • check the latest vaccine recommendations for Jamaica

Hurricane Melissa Hurricane Melissa made landfall as a major hurricane in Jamaica in October 2025. All Western parishes suffered significant damage and some communities are still without electricity and piped water. In the worst affected areas, access to healthcare is limited, and there is still debris and standing water that carries health risks, including water-borne and mosquito-borne diseases.

Updated 22.06.2026

Exercise increased caution in Jamaica due to crime and health risks . Some areas have increased risk. Read the entire Travel Advisory.

U.S. government employee travel restrictions

U.S. government employees working in Jamaica are not allowed to use public buses or drive between cities at night due to road conditions and safety risks. They are also not allowed to travel to areas with increased safety risks without prior authorization.

  • U.S. citizens in Jamaica should take the same precautions.

Crime

  • Violent crime is a risk throughout Jamaica. The homicide rate reported by the Government of Jamaica is among the highest in the Western Hemisphere.
  • Tourist areas generally see lower rates of violent crime than other parts of the country.
  • Armed robberies and sexual assaults are common.
  • The U.S. embassy routinely receives reports of sexual assaults, including from U.S. citizen tourists at resorts.
  • U.S. citizens report slow or unsatisfactory response to serious criminal incidents.
  • When arrests are made, cases are often not prosecuted to a final verdict and sentence.

Health

Basic and specialized medical care may not be available in many parts of Jamaica. This includes slower emergency service response times and less availability of care for illness or injury. Review the Health section of the Travel Guidance on this page for more information.

  • Private hospitals require payment up front before admitting patients. They may not be able to provide specialized care.
  • Ambulance services are not always staffed with EMTs. They are not always readily available, especially in rural areas.
  • U.S. citizens should bring extra prescription medication. Common medications, such as insulin, can be difficult to obtain. Be sure to bring enough of your medications (including prescription and over-the-counter) to last the full duration of your trip.
  • U.S. Medicare and Medicaid do not apply abroad.
  • Most hospitals and doctors abroad do not accept U.S. health insurance.
  • Air ambulance service to the United States costs approximately 30,000 USD as a minimum price.
  • We strongly recommend that you have travel insurance and confirm your coverage. Travel insurance should include medical insurance, evacuation assistance, and other trip coverage.
  • If you purchase medical travel insurance, you are responsible for seeking reimbursement from your…

  • s’informer sur la conduite à tenir en cas d’ouragans dans la rubrique Informations pratiques et sur la situation météorologique en consultant le site du National Hurricane Center (site en anglais) ;

  • s’informer sur la conduite à tenir en cas de séismes dans la rubrique Informations pratiques ;
  • se conformer aux instructions des autorités locales ;

  • Glistening Waters / Luminous Lagoon (Falmouth) : attraction déconseillée.

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. You should remain vigilant at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Jamaica

Although there’s no recent history of terrorism in Jamaica, attacks cannot be ruled out.

Zones of Special Operations

The government can put enhanced security measures in place in response to outbursts of violence and shootings, such as a State of Emergency (SOE) or Zone of Special Operations (ZOSOs). A SOE or ZOSO will have specific boundaries and will temporarily give the police and military additional powers. These can include imposing curfews, cordons, searching of persons, vehicles, and places. Curfews can be imposed with little notice and are usually a short-term measure. Tourists and visitors are not usually affected by SOE or ZOZOs. Check locally whether any security measures or curfews apply and follow the advice of the local authorities.

Crowds and demonstrations

Protests and demonstrations occur across Jamaica and can cause significant disruption to traffic and public transportation. Any event with large crowds has the potential to turn violent, including large celebratory gatherings. They can also be used by criminals as cover for robbery and theft. Stay away from areas where protests, demonstrations or marches are taking place. Monitor local and social media updates.

Crime

Crime and homicide rates are high in Jamaica. Gang violence and shootings mostly occur in inner city areas. Tourist areas are not usually affected by gang-related crime and violence.

Be cautious particularly when travelling in and around:

  • Kingston
  • Spanish Town
  • Savanna-la-Mar
  • parts of Montego Bay including Flankers, Barrett Town, Glendevon, Rose Heights and Mount Salem
Protecting yourself and your belongings

The motive for most attacks on tourists is robbery. Take extra care in more run-down areas and those less visited by tourists.

Be aware of your surroundings and:

  • do not walk in isolated areas or deserted beaches, even during the day
  • travel with others or go on a tour with a reputable company when possible
  • be careful when withdrawing money from ATMs. Do not withdraw a lot of money at one time or use ATMs in badly lit areas. It is generally safer to use ATMs during daylight hours
  • avoid using buses at night
  • do not display valuables or leave them in your car
  • consider removing expensive jewellery
  • stay alert and be wary of people who approach you
  • avoid walking at night
  • be aware that resisting a robbery could lead to a violent response, including the use of weapons, that could result in physical injury

Most hotels and resorts are well guarded, but burglaries can occur. Follow hotel security instructions, use hotel safes for your valuables, including your passport, and lock windows and doors. In residential accommodation ensure that proper locks and window grilles are fitted.

Rape and sexual assault

Some British nationals have reported incidents of rape and sexual assault in tourist areas, including beach resorts. In many cases, the alleged perpetrator was someone the victim met socially, for example at a bar, hotel, beach or excursion.

Although incidents are infrequent, simple habits such as increased awareness and extra…

Global Affairs Canada — written for Canadian travellers, valid for all

Local laws

You must abide by local laws. Learn about what you should do and how we can help if you are arrested or detained abroad.

Drugs

Penalties for possession, use or trafficking of illegal drugs are severe. Convicted offenders can expect lengthy prison sentences. Departing visitors are thoroughly screened for drug possession. Many Canadians are serving prison sentences for drug crimes, in some cases, committed unwittingly. When leaving Ocho Rios and Montego Bay by cruise ship, you may be searched for drugs by local authorities. You should have a witness accompany you if you undergo such procedures.

  • Pack your own luggage and monitor it closely at all times
  • Never transport other people’s packages, bags or suitcases
Cannabis

Jamaica decriminalized the possession of up to 2 ounces of cannabis, which is punishable by a fine and will not result in a criminal record. However, smoking cannabis in public places remains prohibited. Do not attempt to enter or depart Jamaica and cross international borders with any amount of cannabis. Drugs, alcohol and travel

Illegal activities

It’s illegal to:

  • wear, buy or sell army or police camouflage clothing
  • sunbathe nude in non-designated areas
  • use indecent language
Imports and exports

There are strict import and export regulations on:

  • fruits and vegetables
  • animals, including pets
  • animal products
  • firearms

Entering the country with a firearm or even a single round of ammunition is considered a serious crime.

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. The convention applies between Canada and Jamaica. If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Jamaica, and if the applicable conditions are met, you may apply for the return of your child to the Jamaican court. If you are in this situation:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • contact the Central Authority for your province or territory of residence for information on starting an application under The Hague Convention
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Jamaica to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children's Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies. Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Driving

Traffic drives on the left. You can drive in Jamaica with a valid Canadian driver’s licence for up to 6 months. After 6 months, you must obtain a Jamaican driver’s licence. It is mandatory to wear a helmet on mopeds, motor scooters and motorcycles, and to wear a seatbelt in cars and taxis. There are heavy fines for non-compliance.

Investments

Disputes related to property acquisition or other investments are costly and take time to resolve. If you plan to buy property or make other investments in Jamaica:

  • seek legal advice in Canada and Jamaica before making commitments
  • choose your own lawyer
  • avoid hiring a lawyer recommended by a seller
Money

The currency of Jamaica is the Jamaican dollar (JMD). Hotels and businesses catering to tourists accept major credit cards. There is limited ATM availability outside Kingston and Montego Bay. Make sure you have enough cash to cover your expenses if travelling outside these areas.

Illegal drugs and prison sentences

It’s illegal to smoke marijuana (ganja) in Jamaica. There are penalties for all drug offences including those involving marijuana. For possession of amounts of up to 2 ounces you will get a fine of 500 Jamaican dollars, to be paid within 30 days. Severe penalties apply for all other drug related offences, including attempting to export narcotics. All prison sentences are served in full in Jamaica. Prison conditions are harsh. Always pack your own luggage and do not carry anything through customs for someone else.

LGBT+ travellers

Male same-sex sexual activity is illegal, but the law is not always strictly enforced. The attitude of many Jamaicans towards same-sex relationships is hostile. Be mindful of local attitudes and be aware that showing affection in public may receive unwanted attention. Take care when using dating apps in Jamaica, especially those used by the LGBT+ community. Criminals have used apps to lure victims to meet in a public place but later assault and rob them. Read more advice for LGBT+ travellers.

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Jamaica’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Jamaica set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Jamaican High Commission in the UK.

If you want to extend your stay, apply to the Jamaican Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency . If you overstay without authority, you could be fined or arrested.

Airport tax

Arrival and departure taxes are usually included in the cost of your ticket. If unsure check with your carrier who will be able to advise you.

Vaccine requirements

You must have a certificate to prove you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination if you’re coming from a country listed as a transmission risk .

For full details about medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, see TravelHealthPro’s Jamaica guide .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Jamaica . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

You must make a customs declaration before entering Jamaica. You should complete the Immigration and Custom Form C5 online where possible before you arrive.

It is illegal to bring meat and dairy products into Jamaica. Customs officials may search your baggage and will destroy banned foodstuffs.

Taking money into Jamaica

  • proof of the source of money
  • the intended use of the funds

If you do not declare money as required, it is a breach of the Jamaican Customs Act. Your money could be seized and you could get a fine.

What are the entry requirements for Jamaica with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): All travellers to Jamaica must complete the free C5 immigration and customs form before arrival as of 1 September 2023; beware of websites charging for this service. Tourist stays up to 30 days and business trips without paid employment do not require a visa for Jamaica. Tourist stays exceeding 30 days or stays for purposes other than tourism require a visa from the Jamaican Embassy in Brussels.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): Your British passport must be valid for your entire stay in Jamaica and have two blank pages for entry and exit stamps. British citizens do not need a visa for Jamaica and are usually granted entry for up to ninety days, with the departure date stamped in your passport. If you wish to extend your stay beyond ninety days, you must apply to the Jamaican Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency; overstaying without authority may result in fines or arrest.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a Jamaica visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (CHF 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.
  • Attach it to the visa file; if in doubt about the format, write to us.

Is an Amex, Visa or Mastercard enough in Jamaica?

At today's level 2/4, card by card:

  • Amex Platinum — No area exclusion at this level — but three written limits: deductible and prior approval, 90-day cap, advance under conditions.
  • Visa — No express area exclusion — but a €156,000 cap, 90 days, and the war/instability exclusion in the background.
  • Mastercard — No exclusion in play at this level — but a €155,000 cap and 90 covered days.
  • Three lines to read in your notice: the duration (often 90 days per trip), the settlement (reimbursement afterwards or direct payment of the hospital) and the area exclusion at level 4/4.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Jamaica?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — No area exclusion at this level — compare cap, deductible and covered duration.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.
  • Have your IPID number or the PDF of the terms and ask an expert to call you back: the answer is in the document, not in the brochure.

Can I be treated in Jamaica, or will I be evacuated?

0.5 physicians per 1,000 people (2023) versus 4.5 in Switzerland.

  • 1.6 hospital beds per 1,000 people versus 4.4 in Switzerland (World Bank).
  • With 0.5 physicians per 1,000 people (89% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover. Health spending of 520 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.
  • When the local facility is not enough, Maximum's medical team decides the evacuation to a suitable centre, and pays for it (art. 6.2.2).

Jamaica: safety, in figures?

49.4 homicides per 100,000 people (2023) versus 0.6 in Switzerland and 1.3 in France.

  • 15.1 road deaths per 100,000 people versus 2.2 in Switzerland (World Bank, WHO).
  • The homicide rate is 82 times Switzerland's: violence is a real risk there, concentrated in the areas named by the official advisories. On the road, 7 times more deaths than in Switzerland: road crashes are the leading cause of death of healthy travellers (CDC) — seat belt, no night driving, a driver or a taxi from a rank.

  • Your point (Saint Andrew): country-wide vigilance.
  • Maximum does not exclude these areas: the VIP Pack covers care and repatriation there (sanctions, embargoes and a country already at war at departure remain enforceable).
