How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

Recommended vaccines and medicines8

Routine vaccinesCDC ↗

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include Chickenpox (Varicella) Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (DTaP, Tdap, or Td) Flu (influenza) Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) Polio Shingles

COVID-19CDC ↗

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines. Please see  Your COVID-19 Vaccination  for more information.

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Kosovo. Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series. Travelers allergic to a vaccine component should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.

Hepatitis BCDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers younger than 60 years old traveling to Kosovo. Unvaccinated travelers 60 years and older may get vaccinated before traveling to Kosovo.

MeaslesCDC ↗

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

MonkeypoxCDC ↗

Monkeypox vaccination is recommended for any adult who anticipates any of the following activities during travel: Sexual or intimate contact with a new partner Sexual or intimate contact at a commercial sex venue, like a sex club or bathhouse Sexual or intimate contact in exchange for money, goods, drugs, or other trade Sexual or intimate contact in association with a large public event, such as a rave, party, or…

RabiesCDC ↗

Dogs infected with rabies are not commonly found in Kosovo. Rabies is also present in some terrestrial wildlife species. If rabies exposures occur while in Kosovo, rabies vaccines may only be available in larger suburban/urban medical facilities.

Yellow FeverCDC ↗

CDC recommendations: Vaccine is not recommended. Country entry requirements: Vaccine is not required. Updated April 23, 2025

CDC Travelers' Health, re-read weekly — the recommendation depends on your age, vaccines and itinerary: confirm it with a doctor or a travel clinic 4 to 6 weeks before departure.CDC ↗read 10.10.2026

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult your doctor or an international vaccination centre at least eight weeks before travel to assess your health and receive vaccination recommendations. Foreign Office
  • Carry medications only in original packaging with original labels, accompanied by a prescription listing drugs by international non-proprietary name; verify authorisation in Kosovo beforehand. France Diplomatie
  • Ensure you are up to date with French vaccination calendar, particularly against diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis, pertussis and measles; your vaccination record may be requested upon arrival. France Diplomatie
  • High air pollution occurs frequently in Pristina during winter; people with respiratory disease, asthma, heart problems, children, pregnant women and elderly should keep doors and windows closed during pollution peaks. France Diplomatie
  • In Kosovo, medical treatment costs must be paid in cash before leaving public hospitals; private clinics accept credit cards and offer better quality care; ensure adequate travel health insurance and repatriation coverage. DFAE
  • Crimean Congo Haemorrhagic Fever is endemic in Kosovo, particularly around Malisheva in summer; West Nile virus and altitude sickness are also present; no vaccine exists for Crimean Congo Haemorrhagic Fever. Foreign Office

  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Health — Foreign Office

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Dial 94 from a landline or 194 from a mobile and ask for an ambulance.

Contact your insurance or medical assistance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

  • check the latest vaccine recommendations for Kosovo
  • see where to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

See what health risks you’ll face in Kosovo including biting insects and ticks.

Crimean Congo Haemorrhagic Fever is endemic in Kosovo. Most cases occur in the region around Malisheva (central Kosovo), but during the summer months other rural areas of Kosovo can be affected.

Mosquito-borne diseases are present, including West Nile virus.

Altitude sickness is a risk in parts of Kosovo. Read more about altitude sickness on TravelHealthPro .

Air quality

High levels of air pollution can occur in Kosovo, particularly in Pristina. You can find further information and advice on air quality on the World Health Organization (WHO) website and check air quality levels on the World Air Quality Index Website .

Medication

The legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can be different in other countries.

Healthcare in Kosovo

The public health system in Kosovo is poorly funded. Hospitals lack specialist equipment and there is a widespread shortage of medicines and other essentials. Many doctors and nurses lack training in modern techniques and practices.

Treatment is also available at private medical clinics, which are of better quality than the public health system and are relatively affordable. A small payment in cash is required for treatment in the public health system.

Make sure you have adequate travel health insurance and accessible funds to cover the cost of any medical treatment abroad and repatriation.

  • conseillé d’indiquer au point de départ (hôtel ou chambre d’hôte) l’itinéraire précis envisagé et la durée prévisionnelle du parcours ;
  • essentiel de se munir avant le départ des coordonnées des secours les plus proches (afin d’éviter de devoir laisser un blessé en altitude pour aller chercher les secours). Le numéro d’urgence est le 112 ;
  • fortement conseillé de se renseigner précisément en amont du séjour sur l’état de l’itinéraire envisagé afin de prévoir un équipement adapté au terrain ;

Emergency Management Agency

Northern Kosovo

Whilst there have been recurring tensions across northern Kosovo resulting in sporadic unrest, protests and security incidents, this has improved since 2024. However, northern Kosovo remains politically sensitive and conditions can change quickly.

Localised incidents, including protests and disruptions, can occur with little warning, particularly during periods of heightened political tension. Remain vigilant, monitor local media and stay away from demonstrations and large gatherings.

Old landmines and unexploded bombs

Residual landmines and other unexploded bombs and weapons remain in Kosovo from the 1999 conflict. Roads and tracks have been cleared.

The main areas of risk are:

  • along the border with Albania
  • the Dulje Pass area in central Kosovo
  • the mountainous region between Kosovo, Albania and Montenegro

Keep to the main roads when travelling in these areas. Most of the remaining dangerous areas are in high mountainous regions covered with dense vegetation. If you see something made of metal or anything suspicious, do not touch it, and report it immediately to the police or the nearest Kosovo Force (KFOR) patrol .

Terrorist attacks in Kosovo cannot be ruled out.

Terrorist attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreign nationals, and at large public gatherings and cultural events. Terrorists may target religious sites, including churches.

Political situation

The political situation is generally stable, but there is a risk of protests in the northern municipalities of Zvečan, Zubin Potok and Leposavic, and areas of Mitrovica north of the river Ibar. Protests in these areas have at times turned violent.

Find out more about the regions where FCDO advises against all but essential travel .

There are also occasional protests in Pristina. These are usually peaceful, but can lead to some disruption, including to traffic and public transport. Keep up to date with local developments and avoid any large crowds or demonstrations.

Protecting yourself and your belongings

Pickpockets operate in airports and on public transport. Criminals target people they think may be carrying large amounts of cash. Take precautions to protect yourself from street crime by:

  • only travelling in pre-booked taxis
  • not wearing expensive-looking jewellery or watches
  • avoiding isolated areas especially at night or when walking alone
Bank card fraud

Fraudsters can steal your card details without you noticing. Use ATMs inside banks if possible, and check ATMs on the street for signs of tampering. Keep cards in sight when paying in shops and restaurants. Read more about how to avoid bank card fraud .

Organised crime

Isolated incidents of armed violence and vehicle explosions in major cities are usually linked to organised crime and do not target visitors. However there could be violent incidents in areas visited by foreign nationals.

Vehicle crime

Criminals may target 4-wheel-drive and luxury vehicles – they may rob the passengers or try to take the vehicle. Get advice from your accommodation or car hire company about more secure routes.

Unexploded landmines and bombs

There is a risk you could encounter landmines or other unexploded weapons when travelling in some remoter parts of Kosovo. See Regional risks .

Personal ID

Carry your passport with you for identification and keep a copy separately in a safe place.

Illegal drugs

Illegal drugs, including cannabis, carry severe penalties. You should expect a long jail sentence and heavy fines for possessing, using or smuggling illegal drugs, including when transiting through the airport.

Airports in Kosovo have excellent technology and security for detecting illegal items. This is also used to scan the baggage of transiting passengers.

Using cameras in secure areas

Taking photographs of military or police installations, personnel or vehicles may lead to difficulties with the authorities.

LGBT+ travellers

There are no laws against same-sex relations in Kosovo. However, Kosovo is still a conservative society and the LGBT+ scene is more tolerated than accepted.

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. It does not apply between Canada and Kosovo. If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Kosovo by an abducting parent:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Kosovo to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies. Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

  • à la frontière ;
  • au poste de police le plus proche ;
  • directement en ligne via le site web : https://foreignerregistration.kosovopolice.com:8444/ ;

Entry requirements — rules for a British passportForeign Office ↗updated 23.09.2026 · read 15.10.2026

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of the current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Kosovo set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Kosovan Embassy in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

To enter Kosovo, your passport must be undamaged and valid for the duration of your stay. You do not need an additional period of validity beyond this.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Kosovo-Serbia border

The authorities in Serbia do not consider the designated crossing points with Kosovo to be official international border crossing points.

However, it is possible to travel from Serbia to Kosovo, and back again.

You cannot travel from Kosovo to Serbia without a Serbian entry stamp from Belgrade, Niš or Kraljevo airports, or one of Serbia’s other border crossings with:

  • Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Bulgaria
  • Croatia
  • Hungary
  • Montenegro
  • North Macedonia
  • Romania

You are likely to be refused entry without a valid Serbian entry stamp. You should take a route through a third country.

Border guards have denied foreign nationals entry to Serbia if they have Republic of Kosovo stamps in their passports. We are also aware of isolated incidents where Serbian authorities have cancelled Kosovo stamps in passports of foreign nationals.

Tensions between Serbia and Kosovo can cause difficulties at border crossings with Kosovo.

Visa requirements

You can visit Kosovo without a visa for up to 90 days, for business or tourism.

Officials may ask you to provide documentary evidence giving a reason for your stay or showing you have sufficient finances. They will issue a 90-day entry stamp, which is renewable for longer stays.

If you plan to stay in Kosovo for longer than 90 days, you will need to register with the Ministry of Internal Affairs for a residence permit.

Vaccine requirements

For details about medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, see TravelHealthPro’s Kosovo guide .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Kosovo . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Transport and infrastructure

What is the official risk level in Kosovo today?

Level 2/4 — Exercise Increased Caution, U.S. Department of State, retrieved on 16 October 2026.

  • Is the whole country advised against? United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no (reading of 27 September 2026).
  • Contractually, only an FDFA, FOPH or WHO advisory against the trip opens Module A (art. 18.1) — that is not the case today.
  • International medical cover, 24/7 number saved, and a read of the areas named under Safety & risks before booking the itinerary.

Is the whole of Kosovo advised against, or only some areas?

An area advised against does not rule out the country.

  • Official answers: United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no.
  • Foreign Office, regional risks: “This section has safety advice for regions of Kosovo. It only covers regions where FCDO has specific advice. You should also read FCDO ’s overall travel advice and safety and security advice . Northern Kosovo Whilst there have been recurring tensions across…”
  • Keep your country of residence's advisory on booking day and on departure day: that is what your policy's clauses cite.

What are the entry requirements for Kosovo with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): French nationals entering Kosovo must declare their residence within three days via the police, online at foreignerregistration.kosovopolice.com, or using the Foreign registration app for iOS and Android. French citizens may stay in Kosovo up to 90 days within six months with a valid national identity card or passport; note that French five-year ID validity extensions do not apply to Kosovo authorities. Stays exceeding 90 days require consulting the competent Kosovo embassy about a long-stay visa, then requesting a residence permit from the Interior Ministry's Department of Nationality, Asylum and Migration.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British citizens need a valid, undamaged passport for their entire stay in Kosovo; no additional validity period beyond departure is required. Visa-free entry to Kosovo is permitted for up to 90 days for business or tourism; officials may request proof of purpose or sufficient funds. Stays longer than 90 days require registration with Kosovo's Ministry of Internal Affairs for a residence permit.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a Kosovo visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (EUR 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.
  • Attach it to the visa file; if in doubt about the format, write to us.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Kosovo?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.

  • Have your IPID number or the PDF of the terms and ask an expert to call you back: the answer is in the document, not in the brochure.
