How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

Routine vaccinesCDC ↗

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include Chickenpox (Varicella) Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (DTaP, Tdap, or Td) Flu (influenza) Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) Polio Shingles

COVID-19CDC ↗

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines. Please see  Your COVID-19 Vaccination  for more information.

CholeraCDC ↗

Active cholera transmission is  widespread  in Mozambique. Cholera is rare in travelers.  Certain factors  may increase the risk of getting cholera or having severe disease ( more information ). Avoiding unsafe food and water and washing your hands can also help prevent cholera. Vaccination may be considered for children and adults who are traveling to areas of active cholera transmission.

Hepatitis ACDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Mozambique. Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series. Travelers allergic to a vaccine component should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.

Hepatitis BCDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers of all ages traveling to Mozambique.

MalariaCDC ↗

CDC recommends that travelers going to Mozambique take prescription medicine to prevent malaria. Depending on the medicine you take, you will need to start taking this medicine multiple days before your trip, as well as during and after your trip. The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult your doctor or an international vaccination centre before departure to assess your health and receive vaccination recommendations. France Diplomatie
  • Pack only necessary medications in original packaging with original labels, accompanied by a prescription with international common names (DCI). Verify medications are authorised in your destination. France Diplomatie
  • Ensure you are up to date with French vaccination calendar, particularly against diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis, pertussis and measles. Carry your vaccination record. France Diplomatie
  • Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory if you have transited or stayed in 42 specific countries including Angola, Brazil, Colombia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Nigeria, Peru, Senegal and Venezuela. France Diplomatie
  • Mozambique is currently experiencing a cholera outbreak in central and northern areas. Prevent cholera by drinking only bottled water, cooking food thoroughly, peeling fruits and vegetables, and washing hands regularly. Foreign Office

  • Fièvre jaune : la vaccination contre la fièvre jaune est obligatoire uniquement pour les personnes ayant transité ou séjourné dans l’un des 42 pays suivants : Angola, Bénin, Bolivie, Brésil, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroun, Congo, Colombie, Côte d’Ivoire, Équateur, Éthiopie, Gabon, Gambie, Ghana, Guyana, Guinée Conakry, Guinée-Bissao, Guinée équatoriale, Kenya, Libéria, Mali, Mauritanie, Niger, Nigéria, Ouganda, Panama, Pérou, République centrafricaine, République démocratique du Congo, Rwanda, Somalie, Sao Tomé-et-Principe, Sénégal, Sierra Leone, Soudan, Suriname, Tanzanie, Tchad, Togo, Trinité-et-Tobago et Vénézuéla ;
  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Tuberculose : chez les enfants de moins de 15 ans en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales ;
  • Chikungunya : en cas d’épidémie ou de séjour prolongé ;

Maladies transmises par les moustiques

Chikungunya

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Updated 20.08.2026

Exercise increased caution to Mozambique due to terrorism, crime, health, and unrest . Some areas have increased risk. Read the entire Travel Advisory.

Terrorism

Terrorist groups in northern Mozambique are active. Attackers may strike public areas and tourist destinations with little or no warning, sometimes taking hostages. Terrorists have targeted upscale lodges in remote areas where international big-game hunters stay. Security and police forces may be slow to respond.

There is risk of terrorist violence, including terrorist attacks and other activity in Mozambique. Visit the U.S. Department of State's country reports on terrorism to learn more.

Crime

Violent crime, such as mugging, is common. Petty crime is common in popular tourist locations. Stay aware of your surroundings.

Health

Mozambique’s health infrastructure is weak. Medicine availability is variable and often in short supply. Local medical facilities may lack basic resources and supplies. Some health facilities may ask for cash payment up front.

Medical services for routine and emergency procedures are limited. Read the Health section of the Travel Guidance for more information.

Unrest

Unplanned protests are possible throughout the country. They can quickly become violent. Protests may temporarily block major roads, including toll booths and border crossings.

Do Not Travel to the following areas due to terrorism :

  • Cabo Delgado Province
  • Niassa Special Reserve inside Niassa Province
  • Certain districts in the north of Nampula Province

  • la partie occidentale de la province du Niassa ;

  • limiter les déplacements en ville à pied la nuit, y compris dans les quartiers résidentiels ;
  • se déplacer avec une copie authentifiée de son passeport ou de son document mozambicain (DIRE). Des amendes peuvent être dressées pour défaut de papier d’identité ;
  • redoubler de prudence lors des déplacements à pied dans toutes les zones de la capitale, en particulier : Avenida Marginal (front de mer en centre-ville), Avenida Friedrich Engels (parallèle à l’avenue Nyerere) et quartier portuaire de la Baixa (notamment les abords du Jardim Tunduru) ;
  • ne pas porter d’objets de valeur (appareils photos, caméras, etc.), en particulier dans les lieux publics (marchés, plages, restaurants, etc.) ;
  • circuler avec les portières verrouillées et les vitres fermées ;
  • éviter les déplacements en véhicule la nuit en dehors des agglomérations ou dans des lieux isolés en ville ;

  • ne portez pas d'objets de valeur (montres, bijoux, etc.);
  • ne vous déplacez jamais à pied après la tombée de la nuit;
  • voyagez exclusivement de jour à l’intérieur du pays;
  • faites preuve d’une prudence particulière et évitez de vous rendre dans des lieux peu fréquentés. Cela vaut aussi dans la capitale et sur les plages;
  • gardez les vitres de votre véhicule relevées et les portières verrouillées;
  • en cas d'agression, n'opposez aucune résistance, car les assaillants n'hésitent pas à recourir à la violence et n’hésitent pas à commettre un meurtre;

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Mozambique

Terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in Mozambique.

The main threat is from IS-Mozambique (IS-M), a terrorist group with links to Daesh (formerly known as Islamic State) that is mainly active in Cabo Delgado Province, and has carried out attacks in neighbouring districts of Niassa and Nampula Provinces.

IS-M militants have conducted violent attacks using explosives, machetes and firearms across Cabo Delgado, resulting in hundreds of deaths, including civilians and security personnel. They have also engaged in burning vehicles and homes, robberies, looting and threats. In 2021, dozens of people were killed in a large scale attack in Palma, Cabo Delgado Province. In these incidents, security forces have not been able to reach these areas quickly.

See regional risks .

Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by foreign nationals, such as:

  • roads and road blocks
  • military bases
  • towns and villages
  • islands off the coast
  • safari or hunting parks

Stay aware of your surroundings, stay up to date with local media reports, and follow the advice of local authorities.

Terrorist kidnap

Due to the presence of groups with links to Islamist extremism, there is a threat of kidnap in Mozambique. The threat is particularly acute in Cabo Delgado Province, as well as neighbouring districts of Niassa and Nampula Provinces.

British nationals are seen as legitimate targets, including tourists, humanitarian aid workers, journalists and business travellers. If you are kidnapped, the reason for your presence is unlikely to protect you or secure your safe release.

The long-standing policy of the British government policy is not to make substantive concessions to hostage takers. The British government considers that paying ransoms and releasing prisoners builds the capability of terrorist groups and finances their activities. This can, in turn, increase the risk of further hostage-taking. The Terrorism Act (2000) makes payments to terrorists illegal.

If you work in Mozambique, you should follow your employer’s security guidelines. Employers are strongly advised to take professional security advice, be vigilant at all times and review security measures regularly. Keep others informed of your travel plans and vary your routines. Make sure your accommodation is secure and consider pre-deployment training or travelling under close protection, particularly if working in Cabo Delgado.

Political situation

In Mozambique, protests can occur at short notice and even peaceful protests can become violent. Road toll gates are particularly vulnerable.

Access to land borders can be affected at short notice, along with public services and transport.

To reduce your personal risk:

  • seek local advice and monitor the local media
  • avoid large gatherings or demonstrations
  • pay attention to your surroundings
  • do not travel after dark

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Mozambique’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Mozambique set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Mozambican High Commission in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

To enter Mozambique, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Make sure you get your passport stamped with the correct dates before leaving the immigration desk.

You need at least 2 blank pages for entry stamps.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Travellers under 18

If you’re entering Mozambique with a child under the age of 18, you will need to present an unabridged birth certificate listing both parents. Where the child is travelling with one parent, or without either parent, a notarised parental consent affidavit (not older than three months) is required.

Visa requirements

British passport holders must get an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling to Mozambique for tourism or business visits of up to 30 days.

You can apply for an ETA through the official Mozambique eVisa portal at least 5 working days before you travel. You must pay online when you apply. You cannot pay on arrival at the border.

The fee is approximately 47 US dollars, including a 37 US dollars visa fee and a 650 Mozambican Metical processing fee. Processing can take at least 5 working days. You should apply well in advance of your travel date.

When you arrive in Mozambique, you may be asked to show:

  • proof of accommodation
  • a return or onward ticket
  • proof that you have enough money to support yourself during your stay

You should carry a printed copy of your approved ETA and payment confirmation, as immigration officials may ask to see them when you enter or leave Mozambique.

Entering Mozambique by land crossing

Not all lands borders are open 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Check the opening times directly online . Land border crossings into neighbouring countries can be restricted, blocked or closed at short notice.

It can take a long time to clear border formalities at the Lebombo-Ressano Garcia land crossing from South Africa, especially during holiday periods. There can be delays if you are travelling on public transport. Allow time to get to your destination before nightfall.

There have been armed robberies close to the Lebombo border in Nelspruit. These often take place in the queue for the border, mainly after dark. When you stop at junctions or in queues, stay alert and ensure you have space to turn and drive off.

FDFA (Switzerland) — transport and specific advice, in French

Transport and infrastructure

What are the entry requirements for Mozambique with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your departure date and have at least two blank pages; Mozambican authorities are strict on this requirement. For tourist or business stays under 30 days, apply online via evisa.gov.mz for a tourist or business visa five to seven days before travel; the confirmation may be requested at check-in. Submit scanned documents with your online visa application: identity photo, passport copy, return flight ticket, proof of funds, paid hotel reservations, and professional invitation letter if applicable.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date in Mozambique. British citizens need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for tourism or business visits up to thirty days, costing approximately forty-seven US dollars. Apply for your ETA at least five working days before travel through the official Mozambique eVisa portal; processing takes at least five working days.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.
