How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to the Solomon Islands. Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series. Travelers allergic to a vaccine component should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.

Hepatitis BCDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers of all ages traveling to the Solomon Islands.

MalariaCDC ↗

  • Rougeole : une preuve de vaccination contre la rougeole est requise pour l’entrée sur le territoire salomonais pour les personnes ayant voyagé dans les pays suivants : Australie, Nouvelle-Zélande, Fidji, Samoa, Tonga Philippines, Kiribati et Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée ;
  • Fièvre jaune : o bligatoire pour les voyageurs en provenance de zones d’endémie ;
  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • T uberculose : chez les enfants de moins de 15 ans en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Chikungunya : en cas d’épidémie ou de séjour prolongé ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Health — Foreign Office

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Call 111 and ask for an ambulance.

Contact your insurance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

  • check the latest vaccine recommendations for the Solomon Islands
  • see where to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

See what health risks you’ll face in the Solomon Islands, including:

  • Zika virus
  • malaria
  • dengue
  • biting insects and ticks

Viral infections are common. Take precautions to reduce the risks, such as washing hands and drinking bottled water.

Medication

The legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can be different in other countries.

Read best practice when travelling with medicines on TravelHealthPro .

Healthcare in the Solomon Islands

Healthcare facilities in the Solomon Islands are very basic. There are limited hospital facilities and medical supplies are not always available. The National Referral Hospital in Honiara frequently runs out of blood supplies and often has limited stock of oral re-hydration salts, paracetamol and basic antibiotics. Wards and units can shut at short notice. Gizo hospital is newly built and has good facilities but can also run short of supplies.

Take a basic medical kit with you when visiting rural and remote areas. Make sure you have accessible funds to cover the cost of any medical treatment and repatriation. If you need to get medical treatment in Australia, you’ll need a medical visa to enter the country.

Solomon Islands - Level 2: Exercise Increased CautionState Department ↗updated 28.04.2025 · read 13.10.2026

Updated 28.04.2025

Reissued after periodic review with updated risk information.

Exercise increased caution traveling to Solomon Islands due to risks to health, unexploded ordinance, crime and civil unrest.

Mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue fever are widespread. Medical facilities and clinics outside of Honiara are under-resourced in terms of drugs and medical equipment.

Unexploded ordinance (UXO) from World War II remains a significant hazard and may be present on land, in forests, and underwater locations. Many areas have been swept or cleared, however previously undetected UXO continue to be discovered on a regular basis. While some areas are much more dangerous than others, caution is advised, even in areas reported to be cleared. High-risk areas include:

  • Hell’s Point and the ridges behind Honiara
  • New Georgia group of islands
  • Russell Islands
  • Tulagi Island

While petty crime is common in some parts of Solomon Islands, Honiara has a higher risk of petty crime, break-ins, robbery, and sexual assault, including incidents targeting foreigners. Travelers should remain vigilant, avoid displaying valuables in public, and be cautious in less populated or poorly lit areas. Other violent crimes are uncommon but can occur.

Civil unrest can arise with little notice. Political developments, including Parliament sittings, elections, and times of political uncertainty, may lead to protests or demonstrations, which have the potential to turn violent. Avoid large gatherings and political events.

If you decide to travel to Solomon Islands:

  • Enroll in the  Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)  to receive Alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency.
  • Review the  Country Security Report  for Solomon Islands.
  • Visit the CDC page for the latest  Travel Health Information  related to your travel.
  • Prepare a contingency plan for emergency situations. Review the  Traveler’s Checklist .

  • The entire Solomon Islands territory is under enhanced vigilance; cyclone season runs from November to May, causing airport closures for several days, so consider travel insurance or visiting outside this period. France Diplomatie
  • Avoid driving at night as roads lack lighting; keep doors locked and windows closed while driving; do not use ferries as they are often overloaded and poorly maintained; prefer air transport instead. France Diplomatie
  • Unexploded ordnance from World War II remains in Hell's Point, Honiara mountains, New Georgia, Tulagi and Russell Islands; maintain safe distance and report findings to local authorities. France Diplomatie
  • Honiara experiences rising crime including armed robbery and theft; avoid the central market area, do not travel alone at night, use licensed taxis, and keep valuables in hotel safes. France Diplomatie

  • ne pas montrer de signe ostentatoire de richesse et laisser tout objet de valeur dans un lieu sécurisé (ex : coffre d’hôtel) ;
  • se munir de photocopies des documents d’identité et de voyage et laisser les originaux en lieu sûr ;
  • privilégier l’emploi de distributeurs automatiques situés à l’intérieur des banques ;
  • éviter de circuler seul dans des endroits isolés, particulièrement de nuit et à pied ;
  • circuler portes verrouillées et vitres fermées lors de déplacements en voiture ;

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in the Solomon Islands

Although there’s no recent history of terrorism in the Solomon Islands, attacks cannot be ruled out.

Political situation

Demonstrations can happen in Honiara during sittings of Parliament, elections and times of political uncertainty. They can turn violent quickly and lead to civil unrest. Avoid protests and political gatherings and be cautious. Be aware that services and supply chains may be disrupted.

Security lockdowns can be announced at very short notice. Monitor local media and follow the instructions of local authorities.

Crime

The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force has limited resources and police often respond slowly to calls for help.

Protecting yourself and your belongings

Robberies involving violence, handbag snatching, pickpocketing, distraction thefts and harassment happen, particularly around the central market and local beaches. Take sensible security precautions.

Personal safety

Stay alert when walking around Honiara at night. Take particular care in the squatter settlements around Honiara, White River, Lungga Bridge, Sun Valley, Mataniko Bridge, Burns Creek and Henderson (airport) area. Foreign nationals are often the targets of violent attacks. Security incidents in these areas have included:

  • sexual assault
  • robbery
  • vehicle hijacking
  • improvised roadblocks
  • sporadic rock throwing

Take care in nightclubs, as they rarely have adequate fire precautions in place.

Swearing

Swearing is illegal. If you swear at someone, you could face a large compensation claim, or even a prison sentence.

Dress code

Dress conservatively, with shoulders and knees covered, especially if you’re a woman. Wearing beach clothes away from the beach may cause offence.

‘Tabu’ sites

In certain areas there are ‘tabu’ sites with restricted use and access, for example where only men are allowed. Check with your tour guide or hotel staff.

Land ownership

Land ownership in the Solomon Islands is an important and sensitive issue. On some hiking trails or on many of the beaches around Honiara, you may need to pay a fee (‘kastom’) to the landowner. Ask local advice before setting off.

Illegal drugs

The possession, selling and use of drugs is illegal in the Solomon Islands and can lead to prison sentences.

LGBT+ travellers

Same-sex sexual activity is illegal, and penalties can include a prison sentence. Showing affection in public is likely to cause offence. Read more advice for LGBT+ travellers .

Money

Access to banking facilities is difficult in rural areas. ATMs are only available in Honiara, Gizo, Munda and Auki. Only major hotels and restaurants in Honiara accept international credit cards. Make sure that you have several ways to access money.

Swimming safety

There are dangerous rip tides along reefs and river estuaries. Always follow the warning signs, especially red flags. Where there are no signs, get advice from local residents or guides.

Coral reefs can cause cuts and scrapes.

Solomon Islands - Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution 2025-04-28travel.state.gov ↗updated 28.04.2025 · read 13.10.2026

Advisory summary

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of the Solomon Islands’ current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in the Solomon Islands set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Solomon Islands Embassy in Belgium .

Passport validity requirements

To enter the Solomon Islands, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive and at least 2 blank pages for entry stamps.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

If you are visiting Solomon Islands as a tourist, you must apply for a ‘tourist visa’ through the new Solomon Islands Immigration Division visa portal .

The visa costs 100 US dollars. You will need to provide:

  • a copy of your passport
  • your travel itinerary
  • hotel booking confirmation
  • proof of funds

Tourist visas are valid for 3 months. There is a separate visa if you are travelling for business.

There have been some delays with the new electronic portal. Apply well in advance of your planned travel date. While the new system rolls out it may still be possible to obtain a tourist visa on arrival, but this is not guaranteed.

Keep printed copies or screenshots of your visa documents with you when you travel, including the Visa Application Reference Number (VARN). You may be asked to show these documents to immigration or airline staff.

Yellow fever vaccination certificate

To enter the Solomon Islands, you must have a certificate to prove that you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination, if you’re coming from a country listed as a transmission risk .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of the Solomon Islands . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

For each risk, the official texts themselves: what is happening, then, where they say so, what to do.

CrimeHIGH

What the texts say · Foreign nationals are often the targets of violent attacks. There have been violent crime incidents against foreigners, particularly in Honiara.

What they advise:
  • Avoid travelling alone or after dark.
  • Ensure that you have adequate security measures in place at your accommodation.
  • Exercise particular caution in bars, nightclubs, beaches and public transportation.

Transport and infrastructure

What are the entry requirements for Solomon Islands with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): French nationals receive a free 90-day visitor permit on arrival with a passport valid six months beyond return date and a return ticket. Immigration may request proof of sufficient funds covering your stay duration. The 90-day visa renews free for up to three months total with immigration services.

  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
