How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • French nationals should consult their doctor or an international vaccination centre for health advice and necessary vaccinations before travelling.
  • Carry essential medications in their original packaging with an international common name prescription, and verify their legality in the destination country.
  • Ensure all French national vaccinations are up-to-date, particularly for diphtheria, tetanus, polio, and measles, as vaccination records may be requested.
  • Travellers should check that their destination can provide necessary healthcare and that their travel insurance covers local treatment and medical evacuation.
  • Medical care outside Nassau and Freeport is not universally available, and hospitals require financial guarantees before treatment.
  • Travellers taking regular medication should carry sufficient supplies and research special import regulations for controlled substances before departure.

Faithful summary of the official texts below, which prevail.

  • Fièvre jaune : obligatoire pour les voyageurs en provenance de zones d'endémie ;
  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Chikungunya : en cas d’épidémie ou de séjour prolongé ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Call 911 or 919 and ask for an ambulance.

Contact your insurance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

  • check the latest vaccine recommendations for The Bahamas
  • see where to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

See what health risks you’ll face in The Bahamas , including:

  • Zika virus
  • dengue
HIV and AIDS

It’s estimated that at least 7,600 adults aged 15 or over in The Bahamas are living with HIV – around 3.2% of the adult population. This compares to around 0.3% in the UK. Take normal precautions to avoid exposure to HIV.

Medication

The legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can be different in other countries.

Updated 27.07.2026

Exercise increased caution in The Bahamas due to crime .

Crime

Violent crime, including armed robberies, burglaries, and sexual assaults, can occur anywhere in The Bahamas.

Most crime occurs in Nassau and Freeport on New Providence and Grand Bahama islands. Stay alert in the “Over the Hill” area in Nassau, south of Shirley Street, where gangs have killed residents.

Stay alert in vacation rental properties, especially where private security is not present.

Jet skis, boating, and licenses

  • Boating is not well regulated. Injuries and deaths have occurred.
  • There have been reports of sexual assaults by jet ski operators.
  • Due to safety risks, U.S. government employees are not allowed to use or rent jet skis and personal watercraft from independent operators on New Providence and Paradise Islands.
  • Watercraft may not be safe, and some operators are not licensed or insured.
  • Watercraft operators sometimes ignore weather forecasts. Always follow local weather and marine alerts.
  • Do not operate a fishing boat or other charter in Bahamian waters without a license from The Bahamas Port Department . Police have detained American boaters and seized their vessels. Penalties include a fine of up to $100,000 and 3 years in prison.

Beach safety

  • Never swim alone and beware of jet skis or other watercraft operating close to shore.
  • Sexual assaults have occurred on and near downtown Nassau beaches. Be aware of your surroundings and stay alert in public restrooms.
  • Be aware of your own fitness and swimming capabilities.
  • If you are new to snorkeling, understand the risks. Swimmers and snorkelers have died after overestimating their physical fitness or health.
  • Stay alert for sharks. Shark attacks have led to serious injury and death.
  • Be aware of weather and water conditions and follow local warnings.

Weapons and ammunition

Firearms and ammunition are illegal, including small quantities in carry-on bags or luggage. Police strictly enforce these laws, even at the airport when travelers are leaving.

Travelers with firearms or ammunition can face arrest, jail time, and fines.

Authorities have detained U.S. citizens for several days or more after finding firearms or ammunition, preventing them from leaving.

Hurricanes

The Bahamas regularly experiences hurricanes. Review our information on Weather and Natural Disasters in The Bahamas.

French passport — France Diplomatie

In brief
  • French nationals travelling to the Bahamas are responsible for their own safety and should verify their insurance coverage and financial means for potential medical expenses or evacuation.
  • French citizens should exercise extreme vigilance due to increased violent crime in Freeport and Nassau, including burglaries, armed robberies, and sexual assaults in tourist and non-tourist areas.
  • Travellers should avoid displaying valuables, carry minimal cash, and be cautious at ATMs and during card payments, keeping copies of identification documents separate from originals.
  • French nationals should secure accommodations by locking doors and not admitting strangers, and consult local hotels and travel agencies about safe areas and routes.
  • During hurricane season, from June to November, French citizens should monitor weather forecasts and consider postponing travel if a hurricane is predicted.
  • When engaging in water sports, French nationals should only rent equipment from reputable companies with valid insurance due to a lack of regulation and reported accidents.

  • ne portez pas d'objets de valeur sur vous (montre, bijoux, etc.) ni de grosses sommes d'argent;
  • déposez vos papiers d'identité et objets de valeur dans le coffre de l'hôtel, mais gardez toujours une photocopie du passeport sur vous;
  • Les distributeurs automatiques d’argent peuvent être manipulés à des fins criminelles. Utilisez des guichets automatiques placés sous surveillance à l'intérieur de banques;
  • à New Providence et à Grand Bahama, évitez les promenades nocturnes hors du périmètre de l'hôtel;
  • Des stupéfiants sont parfois utilisés. Ils peuvent être administrés de différentes manières (dans les aliments, les boissons, les cigarettes, etc.). La prudence est donc de mise;
  • Il existe le risque que des boissons contenant de l’alcool frelaté soient vendues ou servies. Leur consommation peut avoir des conséquences mortelles;
  • évitez de vous trouver seul/e dans des régions ou des quartiers isolés;

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in The Bahamas

Although there’s no recent history of terrorism in The Bahamas, attacks cannot be ruled out.

Attacks could be indiscriminate including in places visited by foreigners. Stay aware of your surroundings, keep up to date with local media reports and follow the advice of local authorities.

Violent crime

There have been violent crimes and armed robberies, sometimes fatal, in residential and tourist areas of New Providence and Grand Bahama.

To reduce your risk, do not go on foot outside the main tourist areas and beaches, especially if you are alone. Stay in downtown Nassau, where there are regular police patrols. Avoid unlit areas, and travel in groups after dusk.

Take care if travelling on local bus services at night away from the main tourist areas. If you are attacked, do not resist and comply with any demands. Robbers may have concealed weapons.

Protecting your belongings

There is an increase in reported break-ins and thefts. The outlying islands of The Bahamas (known as the Family or Out Islands) have lower crime rates.

The risk of petty theft and pickpocketing increases during regattas and festivals. You can take precautions by keeping valuables in a safe place. Take care to lock doors and windows when staying at short-term vacation rental properties, especially if there are no security guards.

Drink spiking and sexual assault

The risk of sexual assault increases during regattas and festivals. Do not leave your drinks unattended.

There have been reports of sexual assaults on foreign nationals by jet ski operators in Nassau.

Illegal drugs and prison sentences

Penalties for possessing or trafficking drugs are severe. Tourists may encounter drugs in pubs and bars. Police are vigilant and you could face a substantial fine, deportation or imprisonment.

LGBT+ travellers

Local attitudes towards the LGBT+ community are mostly conservative throughout the Caribbean. In The Bahamas, same-sex sexual relations have been legal since 1991, with an age of consent of 18. However, LGBT+ travellers should be aware that showing affection in public may receive unwanted and negative attention. Showing affection in public, especially for same-sex couples, is uncommon.

Read more advice for LGBT+ travellers .

Swimming safety

Fatal shark attacks can happen without warning. Night swimming (including at dusk), puts you at a higher risk, even in shallow waters close to resorts. Paddle boards in deeper water could be at risk. The Bahamian authorities warn of a particular threat in New Providence and nearby islands and cays.

Some organisers of day excursions use bait to attract marine life, which can also increase the risk of sharks attacking. Never go into water that has been baited. Several attacks in wider Bahamian waters have been linked to tour operators offering shark encounters too close to where fishermen have been gutting fish.

Beware of jet skis when swimming. Most swimming areas are marked by buoys, but these are not always respected by jet ski operators or tourists.

  • Be aware of sexual assault risks from jet ski operators and consider avoiding them, as U.S. government employees are prohibited from using them.
  • Ensure any fishing boat or charter operator in Bahamian waters has a license from The Bahamas Port Department to avoid detention and severe penalties.
  • Never swim alone, be cautious of watercraft near shore, and stay alert for sharks and changing weather conditions.
  • Possession of firearms or ammunition is illegal and strictly enforced, with potential arrest, jail time, and fines for travelers.
  • The Bahamas experiences regular hurricanes; travelers should review information on weather and natural disasters.

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. The convention applies between Canada and The Bahamas. If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in The Bahamas, and if the applicable conditions are met, you may apply for the return of your child to the Bahamian court. If you are in this situation:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • contact the Central Authority for your province or territory of residence for information on starting an application under The Hague Convention

The health system — With 1.9 physicians per 1,000 people (58% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover. Health spending of 2,262 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.

What is the official risk level in Bahamas today?

Level 2/4 — Exercise Increased Caution, U.S. Department of State, retrieved on 16 October 2026.

  • Is the whole country advised against? United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no (reading of 27 September 2026).
  • Contractually, only an FDFA, FOPH or WHO advisory against the trip opens Module A (art. 18.1) — that is not the case today.
  • International medical cover, 24/7 number saved, and a read of the areas named under Safety & risks before booking the itinerary.
  • We check these sources every morning and e-mail you the day one changes (Alerts button).

Is the whole of Bahamas advised against, or only some areas?

An area advised against does not rule out the country.

  • Official answers: United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no.
  • Keep your country of residence's advisory on booking day and on departure day: that is what your policy's clauses cite.

What are the entry requirements for Bahamas with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): All COVID-19 entry restrictions for the Bahamas have been lifted. A passport valid for six months beyond your departure date from the Bahamas is required. Failure to meet U.S. transit passport validity rules will result in denied boarding.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British citizens must ensure their passport expires at least six months after their planned departure date from The Bahamas. British citizens can usually stay in The Bahamas for up to 30 days without a visa, with extensions possible up to a maximum of eight months. Travellers arriving from a yellow fever transmission risk country must present proof of vaccination to enter The Bahamas.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a Bahamas visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (EUR 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.
  • Attach it to the visa file; if in doubt about the format, write to us.

Is an Amex, Visa or Mastercard enough in Bahamas?

  • Amex Platinum — No area exclusion at this level — but three written limits: deductible and prior approval, 90-day cap, advance under conditions.
  • Visa — No express area exclusion — but a €156,000 cap, 90 days, and the war/instability exclusion in the background.
  • Mastercard — No exclusion in play at this level — but a €155,000 cap and 90 covered days.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Bahamas?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — No area exclusion at this level — compare cap, deductible and covered duration.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.
  • Have your IPID number or the PDF of the terms and ask an expert to call you back: the answer is in the document, not in the brochure.

  • 7.7 road deaths per 100,000 people versus 2.2 in Switzerland (World Bank, WHO).
