How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

Recommended vaccines and medicines12

Routine vaccinesCDC ↗

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include Chickenpox (Varicella) Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (DTaP, Tdap, or Td) Flu (influenza) Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) Polio Shingles

COVID-19CDC ↗

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines. Please see  Your COVID-19 Vaccination  for more information.

CholeraCDC ↗

Active cholera transmission is  widespread  in Tanzania. Cholera is rare in travelers.  Certain factors  may increase the risk of getting cholera or having severe disease ( more information ). Avoiding unsafe food and water and washing your hands can also help prevent cholera. Vaccination may be considered for children and adults who are traveling to areas of active cholera transmission.

Hepatitis ACDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Tanzania. Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series. Travelers allergic to a vaccine component should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.

Hepatitis BCDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers younger than 60 years old traveling to Tanzania. Unvaccinated travelers 60 years and older may get vaccinated before traveling to Tanzania.

MalariaCDC ↗

CDC recommends that travelers going to certain areas of Tanzania take prescription medicine to prevent malaria. Depending on the medicine you take, you will need to start taking this medicine multiple days before your trip, as well as during and after your trip. Talk to your doctor about which malaria medication you should take.

MeaslesCDC ↗

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

MonkeypoxCDC ↗

Monkeypox vaccination is recommended for any adult who anticipates any of the following activities during travel: Sexual or intimate contact with a new partner Sexual or intimate contact at a commercial sex venue, like a sex club or bathhouse Sexual or intimate contact in exchange for money, goods, drugs, or other trade Sexual or intimate contact in association with a large public event, such as a rave, party, or…

PolioCDC ↗

In Tanzania, poliovirus has been identified in the past year. Travelers to Tanzania are at increased risk of exposure to poliovirus.

RabiesCDC ↗

Dogs infected with rabies are commonly found in Tanzania. Rabies is also present in some terrestrial wildlife species. If rabies exposures occur while in Tanzania, rabies vaccines may only be available in larger suburban/urban medical facilities.

TyphoidCDC ↗

Recommended for most travelers. Typhoid vaccine is not 100% effective. Practicing safe food and water habits , including washing hands at key times , can also help prevent typhoid fever .

Yellow FeverCDC ↗

CDC recommendations: Vaccine is generally not recommended for travel to Tanzania. b Country entry requirements: Direct travel from United States: Vaccine is not required. Travel from countries with risk for YF virus transmission: Vaccine is required for travelers ≥1 year old; this includes >12-hour airport transits or layovers in countries with risk for YF virus transmission. 3 Updated April 23, 2025 See footnotes

CDC Travelers' Health, re-read weekly — the recommendation depends on your age, vaccines and itinerary: confirm it with a doctor or a travel clinic 4 to 6 weeks before departure.CDC ↗read 10.10.2026

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult a doctor or international vaccination center for health assessments and recommendations, including vaccinations, and consider seeing a dentist before departure.
  • Carry necessary personal medications in their original packaging with an international common name prescription, ensuring they are permitted in Tanzania.
  • Ensure all French vaccination schedules are up-to-date, particularly for diphtheria, tetanus, polio, and pertussis, as vaccination records may be requested upon arrival.
  • Yellow fever vaccination may be requested at entry, though not always legally or medically required, and can prevent administrative issues at airports.
  • Take precautions against mosquito-borne illnesses like dengue and chikungunya by using repellent, wearing protective clothing, and securing accommodation.
  • Practice strict food and water hygiene, including regular hand washing, consuming only well-cooked food and sealed beverages, and avoiding raw or undercooked items.

  • Fièvre jaune : les informations données par les autorités tanzaniennes concernant la vaccination contre la fièvre jaune sont ambiguës. La vaccination contre la fièvre jaune n’est en principe obligatoire que pour les personnes en provenance d’un pays où cette fièvre est endémique (1), ou pour celles qui ont transité plus de 12 heures par un de ces pays. Dans la pratique, la preuve de vaccination est souvent exigée de manière indistincte. La vaccination contre la fièvre jaune attestée par un carnet de vaccinations international peut permettre d’éviter des problèmes administratifs à l’aéroport mais ne constitue pas une obligation légale ou médicale ;
  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Méningite ACWY : en cas de séjour pendant la saison sèche (habituellement hiver et printemps) ou d’épidémie signalée ;
  • Tuberculose : chez les enfants de moins de 15 ans en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales ;
  • Chikungunya : en cas…
Maladies transmises par les moustiques

Chikungunya

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Updated 30.10.2025

Reconsider travel to Tanzania due to unrest , crime , terrorism , and targeting of gay and lesbian individuals . Some areas have increased risk. Read the entire Travel Advisory.

Unrest

Demonstrations often take place in response to political or economic issues. They may also occur on holidays or during large events.

  • Demonstrations can be unpredictable.
  • The Tanzanian government increases security presence around protests. This includes stationary checkpoints and roadblocks.
  • The Tanzanian government limits or does not authorize large gatherings.

Crime

Violent crime is common. It includes assault, sexual assault, robberies, mugging, and carjacking. Local police have limited resources to respond effectively to serious crime.

Terrorism

There is risk of terrorist violence, including terrorist attacks and other activity in Tanzania.

  • Visit the U.S. Department of State's country reports on terrorism to learn more.

The risk of terrorist violence is most common in the Mtwara Region.

Targeting of gay and lesbian individuals

Members of the gay and lesbian community have been arrested, targeted, and harassed. People who identify as gay or lesbian may experience a higher likelihood of being targeted by police. People detained under suspicion of same-sex sexual conduct may face invasive physical exams.

  • État-major ALINDIEN COMFOR EAU

Tél. : +971 74 265 21 265 Courriel : alindien-comfor-eau-marsec.contact.fct@intradef.gouv.fr ou alindien-marsec.operateur.fct@def.gouv.fr .

Consulter également la fiche consacrée à la Piraterie maritime .

Risque sismique

In brief
  • Following the October 2025 elections, violent demonstrations and clashes occurred in Dar es Salaam and other cities, with potential for further unrest and traffic disruptions.
  • Avoid crowds and demonstrations, and follow local authority instructions, as sharing protest-related content may lead to phone checks and legal penalties.
  • Criminal activity is widespread, including violent robberies and carjackings; do not resist attackers and avoid displaying valuables or walking alone after dark.
  • Terrorist attacks are possible on the mainland and Zanzibar, with specific risks noted in border regions with Mozambique, Burundi, and Malawi.
  • Road travel is dangerous due to poor road conditions and reckless driving; avoid night travel and report accidents to the nearest police station.
  • Be aware of potential natural disasters like earthquakes, floods, and landslides, and follow local authority guidance during such events.

FDFA update note — Le chapitre Remarques particulières a été actualisé (introduction d’une assurance obligatoire). (published 05.10.2026)

General assessment

This section has safety advice for regions of Tanzania. It only covers regions where The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office ( FCDO ) has specific advice.

You should also read FCDO ’s overall travel advice and safety and security advice .

Mtwara Province

FCDO advises against all but essential travel to any area within 20km of the Tanzanian border with the Cabo Delgado province of Mozambique, due to attacks by groups linked with Islamic extremism.

The presence of groups linked to Islamic extremism in Cabo Delgado is creating cross-border tensions and instability. There is a risk of violent attacks. An attack on Kitaya village in October 2020 was claimed by groups linked to Islamic extremism operating from northern Mozambique.

Tanzania-Burundi border and Kigoma region

There have been armed robberies in the area bordering Burundi and in Kigoma region, including vehicle hijackings. Drive only in hours of daylight. There are few facilities for visitors.

National parks

Some parks are extremely remote, and emergency access and evacuation can be difficult. If you choose to camp, only use official sites. Make sure you are properly equipped and seek local advice when travelling to isolated areas.

There are risks associated with viewing wildlife, particularly on foot or at close range. Always follow park regulations and advice from wardens, and make sure you have the correct documentation or permit before entering a national park.

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Tanzania

Terrorist attacks in Tanzania cannot be ruled out.

Terrorist attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by foreign nationals, such as:

  • places of worship
  • transport hubs
  • embassies
  • hotels
  • restaurants
  • bars
  • major gatherings like sporting or religious events
  • crowded places

Stay aware of your surroundings, keep up to date with local media reports and follow the advice of local authorities.

Extremists linked to the Islamic terrorist group Al-Shabaab based in Somalia pose a threat across the East Africa region, and are thought to be active in Tanzania. Attacks by IS-Mozambique, who are based in the Cabo Delgado province of Mozambique, are possible near Tanzania’s border with this area of Mozambique. There is also thought to be some support for Daesh (formerly referred to as ISIL). The Tanzanian authorities have successfully made a number of arrests in connection to terrorism. However, many incidents in Tanzania are of unclear origin and may be conducted by criminal gangs.

Political situation

A general election took place on 29 October 2025. Protests and the resulting security response led to fatalities and injuries in many areas of mainland Tanzania.

Previous elections in Zanzibar have turned violent and resulted in fatalities.

Further demonstrations, including violent responses by security forces, are possible at any time. There have been calls on social media for demonstrations to take place on public holidays.

Be aware that there has been an increase in anti-foreigner rhetoric.

Stay away from all demonstrations, rallies and large crowds, and monitor social media and local media for up-to-date information. If you become aware of any nearby protests or disruption leave the area immediately.

The authorities have previously limited internet access during or after protests. Make a note of important phone numbers including your airline travel operator, insurance company and the FCDO ’s consular assistance number in case the internet is not accessible.

Social media

It is illegal to take or share photographs and video footage of protests and violence. Keep away from activities that could be considered political, including political discussions in public places or online. There is a risk you could be detained for social media activities including posting comments, blogging or sharing photographs or video footage relating to protests or the current political situation.

Electronic Devices

Tanzanian security services may request to check your phone and other electronic devices for content related to the events around elections, and to review participation in online groups perceived to have incited violence. The police have said that it is an offence to hold or share videos or images that ‘cause panic or degrade a person’s dignity’.

Violent crime

There is a risk of armed crime, including armed robbery, throughout Tanzania. Take particular care in places frequented by tourists and foreign residents. In Dar es Salaam, tourists and residents have been…

Local laws

You must abide by local laws. Learn about what you should do and how we can help if you are arrested or detained abroad.

Alcohol

The sale and consumption of alcohol may be limited in certain regions of the country and at certain times of the year. Drugs, alcohol and travel

Plastic bags

The use, manufacture or importation of plastic bags is illegal. Convicted offenders, including tourists, can face very heavy fines, imprisonment for up to 7 days, or both.

Identification

Local authorities may request to see your identification at any time.

  • Always carry photo identification
  • Keep a photocopy of your passport in a safe place in case it’s lost or seized
Photography, drones and electronic devices

Photographing military installations is forbidden. Individuals have been detained and/or had their cameras and film confiscated for taking pictures of public structures and buildings, including:

  • hospitals
  • schools
  • bridges
  • industrial sites
  • airports

Always ask permission before photographing individuals. Police have the authority to search electronic devices, including phones. This may involve examining images and videos that could be considered sensitive by local authorities. Possession of such content could lead to detention. You must obtain a permit to import a drone into Tanzania. Information on drone importation – Tanzanian Civil Aviation Authority

Pornography

Possession of pornographic material is illegal.

Flora and fauna

Collecting and removing any flora or fauna from its natural habitat is illegal. This includes removing seashells from marine parks. Tanzanian law strictly regulates the sale, possession or removal from the country of animal or animal parts, including jewelry and hunting trophies. Certain items are exempt. However, you need a special permit from the Tanzanian wildlife management authority before attempting to leave the country with these items. Ramadan

In 2027, the lunar month of Ramadan is expected to begin on or around February 7. In public, between sunrise and sunset, be discreet when:

  • drinking
  • eating
  • smoking
Dress and Behaviour

In Zanzibar, Islamic practices and beliefs are particularly influential. To avoid offending local sensitivities:

  • dress conservatively
  • behave discreetly
  • respect religious and social traditions

Women should cover their shoulders and refrain from wearing shorts.

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. It does not apply between Canada and Tanzania. If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Tanzania by an abducting parent:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Tanzania to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies. Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Driving

You must carry an international driving permit alongside your Canadian driver’s licence. Vehicles drive on the left. International Driving Permit

Money

The currency is the Tanzanian shilling (TZS). Tanzanian shillings or U.S. dollars are the preferred method of payment. Credit cards are not widely accepted in rural areas. ATMs are available in main cities, and some can be used to access Canadian bank accounts. However, they occasionally run out of cash, especially on holidays and during weekends. You should carry a small amount of U.S. dollars for use in airports and at borders. You must declare all currencies exceeding 10,000 U.S. dollars upon arrival and departure from Tanzania.

Foreign Office — laws and cultural differences

Local laws

You should respect local laws and customs. If you are arrested or detained for any reason, you can insist that the British High Commission is notified immediately.

Religion

There is a high proportion of Muslims in Tanzania, particularly in Zanzibar and Pemba. Respect local traditions, customs, laws and religions. Make sure your actions do not cause offence, especially during the holy month of Ramadan or if you intend to visit religious areas.

Personal ID

Always carry copies of your passport photo page and visa. Carry your work permit, if you have one. Immigration officials or police can request these documents at any time, so make sure you can get the originals quickly if you need them. If you’re a resident or longer term visitor, consider getting certified copies.

Ramadan

Ramadan is a holy month for Muslims. The dates vary by year and country. During this time, avoid eating or drinking in public, outside of hotels or restaurants. Get more advice when you arrive from your tour guide, hotel or business contacts.

Dress code

Dress modestly throughout Tanzania. Women wearing shorts or sleeveless tops away from tourist resorts in Zanzibar and Pemba, particularly in Stone Town, may cause offence to the local population. Zanzibari authorities can fine you 700 US dollars or more if you’re wearing what they consider inappropriate clothing in public. For guides or tour operators, the fine can be at least 1,000 US dollars.

Environmental laws

Plastic bags are banned for environmental reasons. If you arrive by air you’ll be asked to hand over all plastic bags on arrival. The ban does not include ‘ziplock’ bags for airline security procedures.

Illegal drugs

Tanzania has strict laws on drug use. There may be severe penalties, including lengthy prison sentences which can be applied both for supplying and simple possession of any drugs, including when transiting through the airport. Airports in Tanzania have technology and security for detecting illegal items, including cannabis. This can be used to scan the baggage of transiting passengers. Tanzanian prisons tend to be dirty and overcrowded.

Discrimination and harassment

Reports made to the British High Commission by Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) British passport holders suggest that they are experiencing additional levels of harassment from immigration officials. If this happens, stay calm and ask that the British High Commission is immediately informed.

LGBT+ travellers

Same-sex sexual activity is illegal in Tanzania, including Zanzibar. Same-sex relationships are not tolerated in Tanzania’s conservative society. If you show affection in public, like holding hands or kissing in public places, you could be arrested or put in prison. Read more advice for LGBT+ travellers.

Money

US dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas. Travellers cheques are not widely accepted. Most banks in major cities have ATMs that accept foreign debit cards and issue Tanzanian shillings. They sometimes break down or run out of money. Widespread cash shortages were reported in the days of political unrest that followed the 29 October 2025 election. To minimise the risk of card cloning, use ATMs located within the bank. If you try to exchange non-Bank of England pound notes, you may get a reduced exchange rate.

FDFA (Switzerland) — laws and customs, in French

Specific legal provisions

  • la possession et l'utilisation de sacs en plastique;
  • photographier des installations militaires, aérodromes, ponts, bâtiments publics, etc.;
  • l’utilisation de drones sans autorisation des autorités tanzaniennes;

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Tanzania’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Tanzania set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Tanzania High Commission in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

To enter Tanzania, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive and at least one blank page.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or proof of right of abode . See Dual Citizenship .

Visa requirements

You must have a tourist or business visa to enter Tanzania.

If you are planning to work or volunteer, you will also need a work permit. Information on how to apply is available from the Tanzanian Prime Minister’s Office .

Your employer or volunteer organisation should help you arrange this before you travel.

If you overstay your visa or permit you can be arrested, detained and fined before being deported.

The Tanzanian Immigration Department has more information on visas .

Applying for a visa

Apply for an ‘e-visa’ before you travel. It is no longer possible to get a visa from the Tanzanian High Commission in London.

You can also get a tourist or business visa for a single entry on arrival at the main ports of entry to Tanzania , subject to meeting all immigration requirements. You may be asked to provide proof of your return journey. You will not be able to get a multiple entry visa on arrival.

Checks at border control

You must be ready to show your return or onward ticket at border control.

Ebola screening

On 18 May, the Tanzania Ministry of Health issued a Travel Advisory note announcing heightened health screening measures for travellers arriving into Tanzania from Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared this a Public Health Emergency of International Concern .

On 27 August, WHO declared the Uganda Ebola outbreak over. Heightened health screening measures are no longer in place for travellers arriving into Tanzania from Uganda, but remain for those arriving from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Mpox screening

You will need to pass through mpox screening, in the form of body temperature checks, at all points of entry into Tanzania.

Mandatory travel insurance

All visitors to mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, except residents, must have mandatory Tanzanian Government-provided inbound travel insurance, even if they already have a personal policy in place. You can buy insurance either online, or at ports of entry upon arrival in both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. This insurance is valid for the duration of your stay (up to 92 days).

You only need to buy insurance for your first port of entry,…

FDFA (Switzerland) — transport and specific advice, in French

Transport and infrastructure

  • File it from the claim form, once back, with those papers.

What is the official risk level in Tanzania today?

Level 3/4 — Reconsider Travel, U.S. Department of State, retrieved on 16 October 2026.

  • Is the whole country advised against? United States: except for imperative reasons · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no (reading of 27 September 2026).
  • Contractually, only an FDFA, FOPH or WHO advisory against the trip opens Module A (art. 18.1) — that is not the case today.
  • Read the areas to avoid, inform your company (Duty of Care checklist) and check that your cover has no territorial clause — My cover says it card by card.
  • We check these sources every morning and e-mail you the day one changes (Alerts button).

Is the whole of Tanzania advised against, or only some areas?

An area advised against does not rule out the country.

  • Official answers: United States: except for imperative reasons · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no.
  • Foreign Office, regional risks: “This section has safety advice for regions of Tanzania. It only covers regions where The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office ( FCDO ) has specific advice. You should also read FCDO ’s overall travel advice and safety and security advice . Mtwara…”
  • Keep your country of residence's advisory on booking day and on departure day: that is what your policy's clauses cite.

What are the entry requirements for Tanzania with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): French temporary passports are recognised by Tanzanian authorities. A passport valid for more than six months beyond arrival date is required. Visas can be obtained online or upon arrival at major entry points for 50 USD/EUR (tourist) or 250 USD/EUR (business).
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British citizens must ensure their passport is valid for at least six months beyond their arrival date and has one blank page for entry into Tanzania. A tourist or business visa is required for entry into Tanzania; an e-visa must be applied for before travel, as visas are no longer issued by the High Commission in London. Visitors may obtain a single-entry tourist or business visa upon arrival at main ports, provided they meet all immigration requirements and can show proof of onward travel.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a Tanzania visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (EUR 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.
  • Attach it to the visa file; if in doubt about the format, write to us.

Is an Amex, Visa or Mastercard enough in Tanzania?

At today's level 3/4, card by card:

  • Amex Platinum — No area exclusion at this level — but three written limits: deductible and prior approval, 90-day cap, advance under conditions.
  • Visa — No express area exclusion — but a €156,000 cap, 90 days, and the war/instability exclusion in the background.
  • Mastercard — No exclusion in play at this level — but a €155,000 cap and 90 covered days.
  • Three lines to read in your notice: the duration (often 90 days per trip), the settlement (reimbursement afterwards or direct payment of the hospital) and the area exclusion at level 4/4.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Tanzania?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — No area exclusion at this level — compare cap, deductible and covered duration.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.
  • Have your IPID number or the PDF of the terms and ask an expert to call you back: the answer is in the document, not in the brochure.

How do I use the medical network on this page?

The page reads hospitals, pharmacies and doctors from OpenStreetMap, around the point you choose.

  • Type your city, hotel or beach: the map re-centres, 24/7 emergency rooms come first.
  • Each row gives the phone when the source publishes it, the nearest street, directions and the Google Maps listing.
  • The PDF briefing repeats the same places, numbered on a printable map.
  • No customer reviews: OpenStreetMap has none, and we invent none.

Which vaccines and health precautions for Tanzania?

The sourced detail is under Medical network › Health: vaccines, diseases present, altitude, outbreaks.

  • CDC (Travelers' Health), depending on the trip: Routine vaccines, COVID-19, Cholera, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Malaria, Measles.
  • France Diplomatie reports in the country: dengue, malaria, chikungunya — mosquito protection day and night.
  • WHO: 3 outbreak alert(s) for this country in the last 24 months, including “Marburg virus disease– United Republic of Tanzania” (13 March 2025).
  • See a doctor or a travel clinic 8 weeks before departure (Foreign Office).
  • Carry your medicines in their packaging, with a prescription using international non-proprietary names (France Diplomatie).

Can I be treated in Tanzania, or will I be evacuated?

0.1 physicians per 1,000 people (2022) versus 4.5 in Switzerland.

  • 0.8 hospital beds per 1,000 people versus 4.4 in Switzerland (World Bank).
  • With 0.1 physicians per 1,000 people (98% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover. Health spending of 36 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.
  • When the local facility is not enough, Maximum's medical team decides the evacuation to a suitable centre, and pays for it (art. 6.2.2).

Tanzania: safety, in figures?

3.8 homicides per 100,000 people (2020) versus 0.6 in Switzerland and 1.3 in France.

  • 31.1 road deaths per 100,000 people versus 2.2 in Switzerland (World Bank, WHO).
  • The homicide rate is 6 times Switzerland's: violence is a real risk there, concentrated in the areas named by the official advisories. On the road, 14 times more deaths than in Switzerland: road crashes are the leading cause of death of healthy travellers (CDC) — seat belt, no night driving, a driver or a taxi from a rank.
