How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

Recommended vaccines and medicines9

Routine vaccinesCDC ↗

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include Chickenpox (Varicella) Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (DTaP, Tdap, or Td) Flu (influenza) Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) Polio Shingles

COVID-19CDC ↗

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines. Please see  Your COVID-19 Vaccination  for more information.

Hepatitis ACDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Qatar. Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series. Travelers allergic to a vaccine component should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.

Hepatitis BCDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers younger than 60 years old traveling to Qatar. Unvaccinated travelers 60 years and older may get vaccinated before traveling to Qatar.

MeaslesCDC ↗

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

MonkeypoxCDC ↗

Monkeypox vaccination is recommended for any adult who anticipates any of the following activities during travel: Sexual or intimate contact with a new partner Sexual or intimate contact at a commercial sex venue, like a sex club or bathhouse Sexual or intimate contact in exchange for money, goods, drugs, or other trade Sexual or intimate contact in association with a large public event, such as a rave, party, or…

RabiesCDC ↗

Dogs infected with rabies are sometimes found in Qatar. Rabies is also present in some terrestrial wildlife species. If rabies exposures occur while in Qatar, rabies vaccines may only be available in larger suburban/urban medical facilities.

TyphoidCDC ↗

Recommended for most travelers. Typhoid vaccine is not 100% effective. Practicing safe food and water habits , including washing hands at key times , can also help prevent typhoid fever .

Yellow FeverCDC ↗

CDC recommendations: Vaccine is not recommended. Country entry requirements: Direct travel from United States: Vaccine is not required. Travel from countries with risk for YF virus transmission: Vaccine is required for travelers ≥9 months old. 3 Updated April 23, 2025 See footnotes

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult your doctor or an international vaccination centre at least eight weeks before departure to assess your health and receive vaccination recommendations. France Diplomatie
  • Carry only necessary medications in original packaging with original labels, accompanied by a prescription listing drugs by international non-proprietary name (INN). France Diplomatie
  • Opioid-containing medications such as Tramadol and morphine are prohibited in Qatar and may result in arrest even with a French prescription; request a substitute from your doctor before travel. France Diplomatie
  • Ensure you are up to date with French vaccination calendar, particularly against diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis, pertussis and measles; your vaccination record may be requested upon arrival. France Diplomatie
  • Obtain travel health insurance covering local medical treatment and unexpected medical evacuation, as healthcare facilities in Qatar require advance payment before treatment begins. Foreign Office
  • If bringing controlled or prescription medication into Qatar, submit an application to the Qatar Ministry of Public Health including a prescription and medical report in English or Arabic issued within the last six months. Foreign Office

  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;

  • Se laver régulièrement les mains à l’eau et au savon ou avec une solution hydro-alcoolique ;
  • Éviter le contact avec les animaux en particulier avec les chameaux et les dromadaires ainsi que la consommation de viande de chameau ou lait de chamelle ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Health — Foreign Office

Before you travel, check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Dial 999 and ask for an ambulance.

Contact your insurance or medical assistance company promptly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

  • check the latest vaccine recommendations for Qatar
  • see where to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

See what health risks you’ll face in Qatar .

Medication

The legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can be different in other countries.

TravelHealthPro explains best practice when travelling with medicines .

Bringing medication into Qatar

Some prescribed and over-the-counter medicines may be controlled substances in Qatar. If you need to bring controlled or prescription medication into Qatar, make sure you follow the steps required by the Qatar Ministry of Public Health, including carrying a prescription and medical report in English or Arabic containing details of your medication and treatment, issued within the last 6 months.

The Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) provides an electronic service which enables travellers arriving to the State of Qatar to submit applications for permits allowing them to carry controlled medicines for personal use, with the ability to track their applications and receive permits online.

Healthcare in Qatar

Healthcare facilities in Qatar are similar to those in the UK. Visitors will be required to pay for medical treatment. Make sure you have adequate travel health insurance and accessible funds to cover the cost of any medical treatment abroad and repatriation to the UK or the country where you live. Read more about what your travel insurance should cover .

Regional tensions

The US and Iran announced a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on 17 June in relation to the conflict in the Middle East, however the situation in the Middle East remains unpredictable. Since 8 July there have been strikes and retaliatory attacks by Iran in a number of locations across the region, including Qatar, against US military and civilian infrastructure. There is a risk of more attacks and unforeseen escalation in the region. Before the ceasefire, the Iranian regime had stated its intention to target locations associated with the US and Israel, including organisations, businesses, facilities, and institutions.

British nationals currently in the Middle East should be prepared for possible flight cancellations, periodic airspace closures, and potential travel disruptions, and should:

- read  If you’re affected by a crisis abroad - GOV.UK . This includes guidance on “how to prepare for a crisis” with suggestions on what you might include in your emergency supplies and “what to do in a crisis”

- sign up to FCDO Travel Advice email alerts

- follow advice from the local authorities

- monitor local and international media for the latest information, including updates relating to airports and airspace which could close at short notice

- stay away from areas around security or military facilities

- keep your departure plans under review, and ensure your travel documents are up to date

- if advised to take shelter, stay indoors or find the nearest safe building or designated shelter. An interior stairwell or a room with as few external walls or windows as possible may provide additional protection. The greatest risk is from falling debris caused by intercepts, and you are safest inside a secure structure. Do not approach or touch any drone or missile fragments or unusual objects

Safety — Foreign OfficeForeign Office ↗updated 19.08.2026 · read 13.10.2026

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Qatar

Terrorist attacks in Qatar cannot be ruled out.

Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreign nationals. Stay aware of your surroundings, keep up to date with local media reports and follow the advice of local authorities.

Terrorists issue statements threatening to carry out attacks in the Gulf region. These include references to attacks on western interests, including:

  • residential compounds
  • military sites
  • oil
  • transport and aviation interests
  • restaurants and hotels
  • beaches
  • shopping centres
  • mosques
  • large demonstrations
Political situation

Events in the region, including political developments, have an impact on local public opinion. Be aware of local sensitivities on these issues. Follow news reports and avoid public gatherings and demonstrations. There is the potential for increased tension on Fridays.

If any incidents occur, monitor local media reports and follow the advice of the local authorities.

Crime

Crime levels are low, but take sensible precautions to protect yourself and your belongings.

Sexual assault

Female visitors and residents should take care when walking or travelling alone, particularly at night. Always use pre-booked taxis from reputable taxi companies or recognised taxi apps. Check the registration number and confirm that the driver has your name. Let someone know you are on the way and give them the registration details of the car.

Personal attacks, including sexual assault and rape, are relatively rare, but do happen. Qatari law places a high burden of proof on the victim to demonstrate that sexual relations were not consensual. If the court determines sex was consensual, the victim or attacker may still face prosecution for the offence of sex outside of marriage.

If you have been sexually assaulted, contact the British Embassy in Doha on 00 974 4496 2000. You can also read our guidance for victims of rape or sexual assault in Qatar .

Laws and cultural differences

Qatar is an Islamic country. Respect local traditions, customs, laws and religions. Make sure your actions do not cause offence, especially during the holy month of Ramadan or when visiting religious areas.

Public worship and proselytising by non-Islamic faiths is illegal and can result in deportation or imprisonment.

Personal ID

You must always carry your passport as an official form of identification. A copy is usually acceptable, but in some situations you may have to produce the original at a police station within a specified time limit.

If you live in Qatar, your residence card is acceptable.

Dress code

Dress modestly in public, including while driving:

*men and women should cover their shoulders and knees * the dress code is strictly enforced in government buildings, healthcare facilities and banks - you may be asked to leave or be denied entry

Local laws

Qatari and Canadian criminal law systems are significantly different. Laws, penalties and legal procedures may vary. You must abide by local laws. Learn about what you should do and how we can help if you are arrested or detained abroad.

Legal process

Suspects and witnesses to incidents may be detained with limited or no access to legal counsel or consular officials for 3-5 days. Qatari officials may issue a travel ban pending the resolution of the case. These processes can last up to several years.

Drugs

Penalties for possession, use or trafficking of illegal drugs are severe. Convicted offenders can expect heavy fines and lengthy jail sentences.

Alcohol

The consumption of alcohol in public is illegal. Avoid drinking alcohol outside licensed premises. Drugs, alcohol and travel

Drones

The importation, possession and use of drones, including aerial photography and videography, are strictly regulated in Qatar. You must obtain authorization before importing or operating a drone. Failure to comply with drone regulations may result in severe penalties, including imprisonment, fines, and confiscation of the equipment. Drone regulations – Qatar Civil Aviation Authority

Ramadan

In 2027, the lunar month of Ramadan is expected to begin on or around February 7. In public, between sunrise and sunset, refrain from:

  • drinking
  • eating
  • smoking
Religious proselytism

Religious proselytism is illegal. Avoid engaging in religious activities that contradict or challenge Islamic teachings and values. This includes preaching, possessing, or distributing religious literature or material.

Dress and behaviour

Qatar customs, laws and regulations adhere closely to Islamic practices and beliefs. Public displays of affection, including holding hands and kissing, is not well socially accepted. Foreign female travellers are not typically expected to wear head covers. However, revealing clothing is considered inappropriate. To avoid offending local sensitivities:

  • dress conservatively
  • behave discreetly
  • respect religious and social traditions
  • seek permission from locals before photographing them
Marriage

Common law partnership is illegal in Qatar. Men and women are not permitted to share a home unless they are legally married or are related to one another. If you marry a Qatari citizen, the Qatari government may inform you that you have lost your Canadian citizenship. Foreign governments don't have the authority to strip you of your Canadian citizenship. If this occurs, contact the nearest Canadian government office as soon as possible. Sexual relations outside of marriage are a criminal offence. Marriage outside Canada

Family law

Qatar family law is different from Canadian family law. Decisions are based on Islamic law. Children of a Qatari father automatically acquire Qatari citizenship at birth. They must enter and leave the country on a Qatari passport. If you are involved in a custody dispute in Qatar, consult a Qatari lawyer for advice and assistance regarding your own specific situation.

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. It does not apply between Canada and Qatar. If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Qatar by an abducting parent:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Qatar to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies. Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Other illegal activities

The following activities are illegal in Qatar and punishable by heavy fines or jail time:

  • photographing government buildings and military installations
  • littering in public spaces and common areas of public buildings
  • trafficking or eating pork
  • issuing bounced checks
  • engaging in prostitution
  • possessing pornographic material
  • spitting in public places, including on beaches
  • cutting, uprooting, burning and damaging trees, shrubs, and weeds, as well as stripping them of their leaves or bark
Identification

Local authorities may ask you to show identification at any time.

  • Carry photo identification at all times.
  • Keep a photocopy of your passport and visa or residence permit in a safe place, in case they are lost or confiscated.
Driving

You can drive in Qatar with your Canadian driver's license for up to 7 days. You must carry an international driving permit if you plan to drive beyond 7 days in the country. New residents may use an International driving permit for a maximum of six months. In that period, you can convert it into a valid Qatari driving licence. Driving laws are severe in Qatar. Local authorities strictly enforce them. The country has a zero tolerance policy for drinking and driving. International Driving Permit

Ramadan

Ramadan is a holy month for Muslims. The dates change every year. Ramadan in Qatar in 2026 will likely start on 17 February and will last approximately 30 days. During this time, do not:

  • eat, drink, smoke or chew gum in public in the daytime, including in your car
  • play loud music or dance
  • swear in public

Get more advice when you arrive from your tour guide, hotel or business contacts. You should also:

  • check opening hours of shops and restaurants
  • be aware that if hotels and restaurants are providing food or drink in fasting hours, they may separate you from Islamic guests, for example with screens
  • follow local dress codes – clothing that does not meet local dress codes may cause more offence at this time
  • be aware that driving may be erratic, particularly when people are trying to get home at dusk
  • be patient and show tolerance
Alcohol laws and bans

Only licensed hotels, restaurants and bars can sell alcohol. Expatriates living in Qatar can get alcohol on a permit system. Don’t carry alcohol around with you (except to take it on the day of collection from the warehouse to your home). The legal drinking age in Qatar is 21. Places serving alcohol will ask for original photo IDs (copies are not accepted) upon entry. It is illegal to drink alcohol or be drunk in public. For example, if you drink in a non-licenced public place, you could get a prison sentence of up to 6 months or a fine up to 3,000 Qatari riyals.

Relationships outside marriage

Any intimacy in public, between any couples (including between teenagers), can lead to arrest. Couples living together while unmarried is illegal in Qatar. Sex outside marriage is illegal for both same-sex and opposite-sex couples. You can be arrested and punishments can include a fine, a custodial sentence and deportation once the sentence is complete. Because of laws on sex outside marriage, if someone becomes pregnant outside marriage, both partners could face imprisonment or deportation. Doctors will ask for proof of marriage during antenatal checks. An unmarried woman who gives birth in Qatar may also face problems registering the birth of the child in Qatar, and could be arrested, imprisoned or deported. To get a birth certificate from the Qatari authorities, you must provide a marriage certificate. Authorities may compare the marriage date against the estimated date of conception.

LGBT+ travellers

Same-sex sexual activity is illegal in Qatar. See our information and advice page for the LGBT+ community before you travel.

Protests

Organisers of protests need to get permission from the Ministry of Interior. This must be done in advance and cannot be spontaneous.

Swearing and rude gestures

Swearing and making rude gestures are considered obscene acts. You can be jailed or deported. Take particular care when dealing with police and other officials.

Smoking and e-cigarette bans

Smoking is prohibited in all closed public spaces including educational institutions, healthcare facilities, public transport, malls, restaurants and government buildings. It is illegal to vape or use an e-cigarette. Police can arrest you and courts can impose a fine, a prison sentence or deportation.

Illegal drugs and prison sentences

There is zero tolerance for drugs-related offences in Qatar. Some medications that are legal in other countries are illegal in Qatar. See guidance on medications that you can bring into Qatar. Penalties for using, trafficking, smuggling and possessing drugs, including cannabis, (even residual amounts) are severe. You should expect a long prison sentence, deportation and heavy fines for possessing, using or smuggling illegal drugs, including when transiting through the airport. Airports in Qatar have highly effective technology and security for detecting illegal items. This is also used to scan the baggage of transiting passengers.

Using cameras, binoculars and drones

Be aware of cultural sensitivities when filming or photographing. Taking pictures and sharing any visual imagery of people without their consent can lead to imprisonment or a fine of up to 100,000 Qatari riyals. Some visitors attempting to film or photograph near religious, military, government or construction sites have been arrested. If in doubt, seek permission. Drone use, including aerial photography and filming, is regulated in Qatar. You may need licences or permits before importing or operating a drone. Breaching drone regulations may result in fines, imprisonment and confiscation of equipment. Check the latest requirements with the relevant Qatari authorities before travelling.

Journalistic activity

Journalists must get permission from the Qatar News Agency (QNA) to film or photograph as part of their work and enter the country on a visiting press permit. Even with permission to film or photograph, you cannot capture or share imagery of individuals without their consent. This permit allows you to take technical equipment like cameras through airport customs.

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Qatar’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Qatar set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact Qatar’s embassy in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

If you are visiting Qatar, your passport should be valid for at least 6 months from the date you arrive. You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

If you are a resident of Qatar, your passport must be valid when you arrive.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

You can get a tourist visa on arrival if you’re travelling on a full British Citizen passport.

You must still get a visa in advance if:

  • you’re travelling for any purpose other than tourism
  • you hold another type of British passport

If you need to stay longer than 30 days, you must extend your visa waiver before it expires through the Qatar Ministry of Interior . If you do not do this, you may be fined. The fine must be paid before leaving Qatar.

There is more information on visa requirements and extensions on the Qatar Ministry of Interior website .

Travel bans

If you are subject to a travel ban, involved in legal proceedings, have unpaid debt or are a child subject to a custody dispute, you may be prevented from leaving Qatar by the Qatari authorities.

Transit passengers

At the airport, all bags are scanned. Transit passengers found with even residual amounts of drugs may be arrested. This includes drugs which may be legal in other countries, but not in Qatar.

Travellers cannot stay in the transit area for more than 24 hours between flights, even if you are booked into the transit hotel in the airport.

There is more information about transit through Qatar on the Hamad International Airport website .

Mandatory health insurance

If you’re staying in Qatar for more than 30 days, you must buy health insurance from a  registered Ministry of Public Health ( MOPH) insurance provider before you travel.

For more guidance see the  MOPH website.

The standard insurance premium is 50 Qatari riyals per person, per month.

Vaccine requirements

To enter Qatar, you must have certificates to prove you’ve had:

  • a yellow fever vaccination if you’re coming from a country listed as a transmission risk
  • a polio vaccination in some circumstances

For full details about medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, see TravelHealthPro .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about what goods you can take into and out of Qatar. You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

It is illegal to import and sell vapes and electronic cigarette products. This includes the sale and purchase of related liquids and other similar products, including electronic shisha pipes. The law applies regardless of quantity and intended use. Customs…

FDFA (Switzerland) — transport and specific advice, in French

Transport and infrastructure

What are the entry requirements for Qatar with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): Visitors staying in Qatar over 30 days must purchase health insurance online before departure from a ministry-approved company; French nationals may buy it on arrival for visa-on-arrival eligibility. French nationals need no visa for stays under 90 days but must present a return ticket and accommodation proof; passport validity must exceed six months. A residence permit, requiring local sponsorship typically from an employer, is mandatory for residing or working and for opening bank accounts, signing leases, or enrolling children in school.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British citizens visiting Qatar on a full citizen passport need a passport valid for at least six months from arrival and can obtain a tourist visa on arrival. Visitors staying longer than thirty days must extend their visa waiver through Qatar Ministry of Interior before expiry or face fines payable before departure. Travellers staying more than thirty days must purchase health insurance from a registered Ministry of Public Health provider before travel at a standard premium of fifty Qatari riyals per person per month.

  • Global Affairs Canada covers the whole country.
  • Maximum does not exclude these areas: the VIP Pack covers care and repatriation there (sanctions, embargoes and a country already at war at departure remain enforceable).
