How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include Chickenpox (Varicella) Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (DTaP, Tdap, or Td) Flu (influenza) Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) Polio Shingles

COVID-19CDC ↗

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines. Please see  Your COVID-19 Vaccination  for more information.

CholeraCDC ↗

There is no longer active cholera transmission and vaccine is not recommended.

Hepatitis ACDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to the Dominican Republic. Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series. Travelers allergic to a vaccine component should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.

Hepatitis BCDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers younger than 60 years old traveling to the Dominican Republic. Unvaccinated travelers 60 years and older may get vaccinated before traveling to the Dominican Republic.

MalariaCDC ↗

CDC recommends that travelers going to certain areas of the Dominican Republic take prescription medicine to prevent malaria. Depending on the medicine you take, you will need to start taking this medicine multiple days before your trip, as well as during and after your trip. Talk to your doctor about which malaria medication you should take.

MeaslesCDC ↗

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

  • Fièvre jaune : obligatoire pour les voyageurs en provenance de zones d'endémie ;
  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Tuberculose : chez les enfants de moins de 15 ans en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales ;
  • Chikungunya : en cas d’épidémie ou de séjour prolongé ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Health — Foreign Office

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Call 911 and ask for an ambulance if you’re in Santo Domingo.

The 911 emergency number does not have full coverage across the country. If you’re outside Santo Domingo, you can telephone the tourist police (‘Politur’) in an emergency: +1 809 200 3500.

Contact your insurance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

  • check the latest vaccine recommendations for the Dominican Republic
  • see where to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

See what health risks you’ll face in the Dominican Republic including:

  • Malaria
  • Oropouche virus disease
  • Dengue

Public medical facilities in the Dominican Republic are generally limited. Private hospitals offer good standards of care, although they can be expensive.

Make sure you have appropriate travel health insurance and can access funds to cover the cost of any medical treatment abroad and repatriation. In some cases, visitors who cannot pay their hospital bills are stopped from leaving the country until the debt is paid.

Medical tourism

There are risks associated with cosmetic or elective surgery overseas.

If you’re considering travelling to the Dominican Republic for medical, surgical or dental treatment:

  • read advice on going abroad for medical treatment and elective surgery
  • discuss plans with your UK doctor before going ahead with any medical procedures abroad
  • research and verify the credentials and qualifications of any healthcare providers before you travel

  • de ne pas porter sur soi des objets de valeur (montre, bijoux…) et/ou d’importantes sommes d’argent ;
  • de ne laisser ni document ni effets personnels dans les véhicules et d’éviter de se garer dans des endroits sans surveillance (vols par bris de glaces fréquents) ;

  • National Hurricane Center ;

  • ne pas se déplacer seul la nuit dans les endroits isolés ou sur les plages ;
  • éviter sauf raison impérieuse de rouler de nuit en dehors des villes ;
  • ne conserver avec soi que les photocopies du passeport et du billet d’avion et placer les originaux en lieu sûr (exemple : le coffre individuel à l’hôtel) ;
  • ne jamais laisser l’empreinte de sa carte de crédit ni même perdre de vue sa carte de crédit, chez un commerçant, au risque de voir sa carte clonée ou son compte débité par des personnes peu scrupuleuses ;

You should also read FCDO’s overall travel advice and safety and security advice .

Dominican Republic-Haiti border

FCDO advises against all travel to Haiti due to the volatile security situation.

Land and sea borders between the Dominican Republic and Haiti are closed. Military and police roadblocks are common in the border area. The roadblocks can appear to be unofficial, although the soldiers do wear army uniform and carry weapons.

There have been armed robberies on roads close to the border with Haiti, including by criminals posing as police officers.

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Dominican Republic

Although there’s no recent history of terrorism in the Dominican Republic, attacks cannot be ruled out.

Political demonstrations

Political demonstrations sometimes happen, although not usually near tourist areas. Take care not to get caught up in demonstrations or large gatherings and follow the instructions of the Dominican Republic authorities.

Crime

The crime rate in the Dominican Republic is high. Incidents range from opportunistic bag-snatching and pickpocketing to violent crime and carjacking.

Stay alert when on the street or driving to the risk of drive-by robberies. Thieves on motorcycles snatch bags and valuables from pedestrians and sometimes reach through the windows of cars at red lights to steal belongings.

There have been incidents where foreigners have been mugged at gunpoint or knifepoint during the daytime while walking in residential districts.

Attackers may be armed, even if you cannot see a weapon.

Protecting yourself and your belongings

You can take steps to reduce your personal risk by:

  • avoiding remote areas, particularly after dark
  • not wearing expensive jewellery or carrying large amounts of cash
  • keeping smartphones and other electronic items out of sight
  • not leaving your bags or other possession on chairs or tables in restaurants and bars
  • keeping car windows shut and doors locked
  • carrying your bags on the side away from the road

If you’re robbed, do not fight back or do anything that puts you at greater risk.

Bank card crime

Bank card cloning and identity theft are a risk in the Dominican Republic. Keep your payment card in view when paying or pay in cash.

Sexual assault

Incidents of assault, rape and sexual aggression against foreigners have occurred, including at beach resorts. In some cases, hotel employees or fellow guests have been implicated.

You can take steps to reduce your risk:

  • avoid walking alone at night
  • do not leave drinks unattended
  • be wary when dealing with strangers, and anyone offering rides or other invitations

If you’re a victim of a sexual assault or other crime, report it immediately to the British Embassy in Santo Domingo . Consular staff can help:

  • report the incident with local authorities
  • explain the process
  • translate for you if there’s a language barrier

See FCDO ’s guidance for victims of rape and sexual assault abroad .

You must formally report a crime to the Dominican Republic authorities before you leave the country so they can investigate.

Personal ID

Always carry copies of the photo page of your passport and entry stamp with you.

Illegal drugs and prison sentences

There are severe penalties for all drug offences. Possession of even small quantities of any drug can lead to a fine and a prison sentence. Pack your own luggage and do not carry anything through customs for anyone else.

If you’re arrested for drug offences your case can take several years to progress through the judicial process, during which you’re likely to be held in detention. If you’re given a prison sentence, you will serve the whole…

Global Affairs Canada — written for Canadian travellers, valid for all

Local laws

You must abide by local laws. Learn about what you should do and how we can help if you are arrested or detained abroad. In accordance with Dominican law, a person detained or arrested by the authorities may be held without charges for up to 48 hours before the case is presented to a judge. Judicial processes may last several years during which accused individuals are normally detained. It could lead to very long prison sentences in difficult conditions.

Drugs

Penalties for possession, use or trafficking of illegal drugs are severe. Convicted offenders can expect lengthy jail sentences and heavy fines. The Dominican Republic has a zero-tolerance policy to illegal drugs, including cannabis. Authorities can impose severe penalties for possession of even a small quantity.

Drug trafficking

Drug traffickers have used tourists as unwitting drug couriers. Even unsuspecting individuals transporting illegal drugs, including cannabis, can be criminally charged and face long jail sentences. Pack and carry only your personal belongings, and never leave them unattended. Drugs, alcohol and travel

Identification

Local authorities may request to see your identification at any time.

  • Always carry valid identification or a photocopy of it
  • Keep a photocopy of your passport and your visa or entry stamp in a safe place in case it’s lost or seized
  • Keep a digital copy of your identification and travel documents
Reporting a crime

Victims of crime, including foreigners, are responsible for reporting incidents to police in the Dominican Republic. If you are the victim of a crime, you should contact the local tourist police and the Embassy of Canada to the Dominican Republic, in Santo Domingo. If you wish to pursue prosecution or seek compensation, you will have to hire a lawyer in the Dominican Republic to file a formal complaint to the police and to pursue the case through the justice system. The Embassy of Canada can provide a list of attorneys.

Reporting a car accident

You must call the police and wait at the scene of an accident. The driver in any accident that causes severe injury or death will be taken into police custody until they have completed their investigation. You should register any accident with a government accident reporting centre. English-speaking agents can help you navigate police and insurance company processes. If you’re detained because of a road accident, you should ask the police to contact the Embassy of Canada in Santo Domingo.

Arrest and detention

If you’re arrested or detained and would like consular services, clearly ask police or prison officials to contact Embassy of Canada in Santo Domingo or Global Affairs Canada’s Emergency Watch and Response Centre in Ottawa.

Legal representation

If you are arrested or detained in the Dominican Republic, you have the right to a lawyer, who can be present during any questioning and at any trial or hearing. The Embassy of Canada can provide a list of local attorneys. If you cannot afford a lawyer, the Dominican government can provide you with a public defender. A Guide for Canadians Detained Abroad

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. The convention applies between Canada and the Dominican Republic. If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in the Dominican Republic, and if the applicable conditions are met, you may apply for the return of your child to the Dominican court. If you are in this situation:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • contact the Central Authority for your province or territory of residence for information on starting an application under The Hague Convention
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in the Dominican Republic to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children's Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies. Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Real estate investments

If you plan on buying property, or making other investments in the Dominican Republic, seek legal advice in Canada and the Dominican Republic. Do so before making any commitments or signing contracts. Related disputes could take time and be expensive to resolve. The Embassy of Canada cannot get involved in local legal disputes.

Timeshares

Disputes over timeshare arrangements occur. Timeshare sales representatives may be very persistent and often use pressure tactics to make a sale. Before purchasing a timeshare:

  • carefully review the contract
  • consult an attorney in the Dominican Republic
  • only provide your credit card number if you are sure you want to make the purchase
  • keep copies of all correspondence
Marriage

Marriages legally performed in the Dominican Republic are legally recognized in Canada. Marriage overseas factsheet

Driving

You can drive with your Canadian drivers’ licence for up to 30 days. You must carry an international driving permit. International Driving Permit

Money

The currency of the Dominican Republic is the Dominican peso (DOP). You can exchange Canadian currency in certain airports or at local exchange offices.

If you’re given a prison sentence, you will serve the whole sentence in the Dominican Republic.

LGBT+ travellers

Attitudes towards the LGBT+ community are mostly conservative throughout the Caribbean. Although same-sex sexual relations are legal in the Dominican Republic, same-sex marriages are not legally recognised. Showing affection in public may result in unwanted and negative attention. Nearly all Dominican hotels welcome LGBT+ travellers, although you should check when you book. Read more advice for LGBT+ travellers.

Specific legal provisions

Visa Long séjour

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of the Dominican Republic’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in the Dominican Republic set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Embassy of the Dominican Republic in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

Up until 31 December 2026, British passport holders can enter and leave the Dominican Republic for tourism purposes, as long as their passport remains valid for the duration of their visit. Rules may change after this date. Check the Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism website for the latest information.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Checks at border control

You may be refused entry if you do not have proof of onward or return travel when you arrive in the country.

Border officials will take your fingerprints and take a photograph of you before allowing you into the country.

Entry and exit form

You must fill in an entry and exit form before arriving in and leaving the Dominican Republic . This form includes your:

  • customs declaration
  • international boarding and disembarking form

You can fill in the form up to 7 days before you arrive in the country. You’ll get a QR code, which you may be asked to show at check-in, or when you arrive in or leave the country.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

You can visit the Dominican Republic for tourism without a visa for 30 days.

To stay longer (to work or study, for business travel or for other reasons), you must meet the Dominican Republic government’s entry requirements.

Extending your visit

You can pay to extend your visit up to 120 days by contacting the Dominican Republic Immigration Service .

Vaccine requirements

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and certificates you need in TravelHealthPro’s Dominican Republic guide .

Depending on your circumstances, this may include a yellow fever certificate.

Children and young people

For children aged 17 and under travelling alone, parents should check travel requirements with the airline and with Dominican Republic Immigration Service .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of the Dominican Republic (in Spanish). You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Transport and infrastructure

What are the entry requirements for Dominican Republic with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): All entries to and exits from Dominican Republic require a free QR code generated at https://eticket.migracion.gob.do/ before departure or arrival; failure to present it incurs an 80 USD fine. French nationals may stay in Dominican Republic for up to 30 days without a visa for tourism; extension requires online application to Immigration Directorate before the 30 days expire. Overstaying beyond 30 days without authorisation violates Dominican law and may result in exit taxes, entry refusal on future visits, and other penalties.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British passport holders may enter the Dominican Republic for tourism for 30 days if their passport remains valid for the duration of their visit, until 31 December 2026. You must complete an entry and exit form up to 7 days before arrival, including customs declaration and boarding form, and receive a QR code to show at check-in or border. Border officials will take your fingerprints and photograph before entry. You may be refused entry without proof of onward or return travel.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a Dominican Republic visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (EUR 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.
  • Attach it to the visa file; if in doubt about the format, write to us.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Dominican Republic?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — No area exclusion at this level — compare cap, deductible and covered duration.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.
  • Have your IPID number or the PDF of the terms and ask an expert to call you back: the answer is in the document, not in the brochure.

How do I use the medical network on this page?

The page reads hospitals, pharmacies and doctors from OpenStreetMap, around the point you choose.

  • Type your city, hotel or beach: the map re-centres, 24/7 emergency rooms come first.
  • Each row gives the phone when the source publishes it, the nearest street, directions and the Google Maps listing.
  • The PDF briefing repeats the same places, numbered on a printable map.
  • No customer reviews: OpenStreetMap has none, and we invent none.

Can I be treated in Dominican Republic, or will I be evacuated?

2.4 physicians per 1,000 people (2023) versus 4.5 in Switzerland.

  • 0.8 hospital beds per 1,000 people versus 4.4 in Switzerland (World Bank).
  • With 2.4 physicians per 1,000 people (47% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover. Health spending of 489 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.
  • When the local facility is not enough, Maximum's medical team decides the evacuation to a suitable centre, and pays for it (art. 6.2.2).

Dominican Republic: safety, in figures?

10.9 homicides per 100,000 people (2023) versus 0.6 in Switzerland and 1.3 in France.

  • 64.6 road deaths per 100,000 people versus 2.2 in Switzerland (World Bank, WHO).
  • The homicide rate is 18 times Switzerland's: violence is a real risk there, concentrated in the areas named by the official advisories. On the road, 29 times more deaths than in Switzerland: road crashes are the leading cause of death of healthy travellers (CDC) — seat belt, no night driving, a driver or a taxi from a rank.
