How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

In brief
  • Consult your doctor or an international vaccination centre well before departure to assess your health and receive vaccination recommendations. France Diplomatie
  • Ensure you are up to date with French vaccination calendar, particularly against diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis, pertussis and measles; some countries may request your vaccination record upon arrival. France Diplomatie
  • Carry only necessary medications in original packaging with original labels, accompanied by a prescription listing medicines in international non-proprietary names; verify these medicines are authorised in your destination country. France Diplomatie
  • Protect yourself against mosquito bites by wearing long clothing, applying repellent to exposed skin, using insecticide-treated nets, and eliminating standing water around your accommodation. France Diplomatie
  • Drink only bottled or boiled water and encapsulated beverages; eat only thoroughly cooked food; wash hands regularly with soap and water before meals and after using toilets. France Diplomatie
  • Before travelling to Grenada, verify your destination can provide needed healthcare, obtain appropriate travel insurance covering local treatment and medical evacuation, and contact your insurer if referred to a medical facility. Foreign Office

  • Fièvre jaune : o bligatoire pour les voyageurs en provenance de zones d’endémie ;
  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Chikungunya : en cas d’épidémie ou de séjour prolongé ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

  • de suivre l’évolution des ouragans sur le site du National Hurricane Center (en anglais) ;
  • de se conformer aux recommandations relatives aux risques climatiques (cyclones et ouragans) ;

  • ne pas montrer de signe ostentatoire de richesse et ne pas transporter des sommes d’argent importantes ;
  • laisser les objets de valeur, les documents de voyage et d’identité dans un lieu sécurisé (ex : coffre d’hôtel) et se munir de photocopies ;
  • se montrer vigilant lors de retraits d’argent aux distributeurs ;
  • éviter de circuler seul ou dans des endroits isolés, particulièrement de nuit ;
  • vérifier avant le départ le niveau de sécurité des hôtels locaux ; éviter de résider dans des lieux isolés ;
  • privilégier les déplacements en voiture, portes verrouillées et vitres fermées ;
  • privilégier l’usage de taxis licenciés et éviter les moyens de transport collectifs ;
  • ne pas prendre d’autostoppeurs ;

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Grenada

Although there’s no recent history of terrorism in Grenada, attacks cannot be ruled out.

Crime

Most crime in Grenada is non-violent and opportunistic, such as thefts of unattended items or burglaries from villas or cars. There are occasional violent crimes including armed robbery and sexual assault.

To reduce the risk to yourself and your belongings:

  • make sure your accommodation is secure – this also applies if you’re staying on a yacht
  • take care when walking alone off main roads
  • take particular care around large gatherings, including street and beach parties, especially after dark or during the festival season
  • avoid isolated areas, including beaches, after dark
  • only use licensed taxis
  • do not carry large amounts of cash or jewellery
  • keep valuables and travel documents in your hotel safe or a safety deposit box
Laws on clothing

It’s illegal for anyone, including children, to dress in camouflage clothing.

Illegal drugs penalties

There are severe penalties for all drug offences. Pack all luggage yourself and do not carry anything through customs for anyone else.

LGBT+ travellers

Local attitudes towards the LGBT+ community are mostly conservative throughout the Caribbean. Certain same-sex sexual acts are illegal in Grenada. Showing affection in public could receive unwanted and negative attention. It is uncommon for opposite or same-sex couples to show affection in public in Grenada.

Read more advice for LGBT+ travellers .

Swimming safety

Currents can be deceptively strong and not all beaches have lifeguards or warning flags. Get local advice before swimming.

See water safety on holiday from the Royal Life Saving Society.

Road travel

If you are planning to drive, see information on driving abroad . You must have a temporary Grenadian driving licence. Your car hire company will help you get one, and you’ll need to show a UK driving licence.

Hire car companies often have stricter requirements for their customers, such as a year of driving experience, a higher minimum age and holding an international driving permit ( IDP ).

Roads can have potholes and speed bumps. Minor roads and roads in rural areas are often narrow and may have blind corners. Drivers do not always use indicators. Pedestrians often walk on the roads.

Some roads are unlit at night. Road signs and hazards may not be easily visible.

Do not stop if you’re flagged down by pedestrians. Keep car doors locked when driving. If you have an accident, call the police and do not move the vehicle.

Taxis and minibuses

Taxis are not metered. There are standard taxi fares for most destinations. To avoid being overcharged, agree the fare in local currency with the driver before you set off. You can often pay in US dollars as well as East Caribbean dollars.

If you use private taxis, you can ask the driver to observe speed limits, but minibus drivers often exceed them.

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Grenada’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Grenada set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Grenadian High Commission in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

To visit Grenada, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Make sure you get your passport stamped.

Make sure the border control officer puts a stamp in your passport. If you do not get a stamp in your passport, you’ll be considered an illegal visitor.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

You can visit Grenada without a visa.

On entry, you’ll be allowed to stay for a maximum period of 3 months.

To stay longer (to work or study, for business travel or for other reasons), you must meet the Grenada Immigration Department’s entry requirements.

It’s illegal to overstay the entry period or to work without a work permit.

Vaccine requirements

To enter Grenada, you must have a certificate to prove you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination if you’re coming from a country listed as a transmission risk .

For full details about medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, see TravelHealthPro’s Grenada guide .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Grenada . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Is an Amex, Visa or Mastercard enough in Grenada?

At today's level 2/4, card by card:

  • Amex Platinum — No area exclusion at this level — but three written limits: deductible and prior approval, 90-day cap, advance under conditions.
  • Visa — No express area exclusion — but a €156,000 cap, 90 days, and the war/instability exclusion in the background.
  • Mastercard — No exclusion in play at this level — but a €155,000 cap and 90 covered days.
  • Three lines to read in your notice: the duration (often 90 days per trip), the settlement (reimbursement afterwards or direct payment of the hospital) and the area exclusion at level 4/4.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Grenada?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — No area exclusion at this level — compare cap, deductible and covered duration.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.
  • Have your IPID number or the PDF of the terms and ask an expert to call you back: the answer is in the document, not in the brochure.

How do I use the medical network on this page?

The page reads hospitals, pharmacies and doctors from OpenStreetMap, around the point you choose.

  • Type your city, hotel or beach: the map re-centres, 24/7 emergency rooms come first.
  • Each row gives the phone when the source publishes it, the nearest street, directions and the Google Maps listing.
  • The PDF briefing repeats the same places, numbered on a printable map.
  • No customer reviews: OpenStreetMap has none, and we invent none.

  • France Diplomatie reports in the country: dengue, chikungunya — mosquito protection day and night.

Can I be treated in Grenada, or will I be evacuated?

1.4 physicians per 1,000 people (2018) versus 4.5 in Switzerland.

  • 3.0 hospital beds per 1,000 people versus 4.4 in Switzerland (World Bank).
  • With 1.4 physicians per 1,000 people (69% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover. Health spending of 526 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.
  • When the local facility is not enough, Maximum's medical team decides the evacuation to a suitable centre, and pays for it (art. 6.2.2).

Grenada: safety, in figures?

13.7 homicides per 100,000 people (2023) versus 0.6 in Switzerland and 1.3 in France.

  • 8.0 road deaths per 100,000 people versus 2.2 in Switzerland (World Bank, WHO).
  • The homicide rate is 23 times Switzerland's: violence is a real risk there, concentrated in the areas named by the official advisories. On the road, 4 times more deaths than in Switzerland: road crashes are the leading cause of death of healthy travellers (CDC) — seat belt, no night driving, a driver or a taxi from a rank.
