How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

There is an outbreak of chikungunya in Costa Rica. Chikungunya vaccination is recommended for people traveling to an area with a chikungunya outbreak.

Hepatitis ACDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Costa Rica. Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series. Travelers allergic to a vaccine component should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.

Hepatitis BCDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers younger than 60 years old traveling to Costa Rica. Unvaccinated travelers 60 years and older may get vaccinated before traveling to Costa Rica.

MalariaCDC ↗

CDC recommends that travelers going to certain areas of Costa Rica take prescription medicine to prevent malaria. Depending on the medicine you take, you will need to start taking this medicine multiple days before your trip, as well as during and after your trip. Talk to your doctor about which malaria medication you should take.

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult your doctor or an international vaccination center for health assessments and recommendations, including vaccinations, and consider a dental check-up before departure.
  • Carry necessary personal medications in their original packaging with an international common name prescription, ensuring they are authorized in the destination country.
  • Ensure your French vaccination schedule is up-to-date, particularly for diphtheria, tetanus, polio, pertussis, and measles, as a vaccination booklet may be requested upon arrival.
  • Present a yellow fever vaccination certificate upon arrival if coming from listed American or African countries, with specific exemptions available.
  • Be aware of mosquito-borne diseases like Chikungunya and Dengue, which are endemic in Costa Rica, and take preventive measures against mosquito bites.
  • Medical care outside San José may be limited, and hospitals require financial guarantees before treatment; ensure you have adequate travel insurance for medical costs and repatriation.

  • l’un de ces pays du continent américain : Bolivie, Brésil, Colombie, Équateur, Guyane, Guyane française, Paraguay, Pérou, Suriname, Venezuela, Trinité et Tobago ;
  • les personnes qui, après avoir séjourné dans un pays considéré comme à risque, ont séjourné pendant au moins six jours dans un pays considéré sans risque avant d’entrer sur le territoire costaricien (et qui n’ont pas eu des symptômes de fièvre au cours de cette période) ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

Health — Foreign Office

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Call 911 and ask for an ambulance.

Contact your insurance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

To enter Costa Rica, you must have a certificate to prove you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination if you’re coming from a country listed as a transmission risk .

For details about medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, see TravelHealthPro’s Costa Rica guide .

See what health risks you’ll face in Costa Rica, including:

  • malaria
  • dengue
  • Zika Virus
Medication

Prescriptions from the UK cannot be used locally. To find a pharmacy (‘farmacia’) look for one of the big national chains such as Farmacia Fischel, Farmacia Sucre, FarmaValue, Farmacia Saba, or Farmacia Santa Lucia, among others; a quick search online should help you to identify the nearest one open.

  • Distrito Hospital (barrios Cuba, Colón, Don Bosco)
  • Distrito El Carmen (barrios Amón, Aranjuez, Escalante y Otoya)

  • en cas d’agression, dans la mesure du possible, il est conseillé de n’opposer aucune résistance ;
  • ne pas se promener la nuit seul, dans la rue, dans les parcs publics, les endroits isolés ou sur les plages ;
  • en toute circonstance, ne laisser aucun document, ni effets personnels sans surveillance : à la plage, dans un bus, dans un restaurant ou un bar, dans un véhicule, à un arrêt de bus ;
  • ne pas ranger les passeports, les cartes bancaires ou de l’argent liquide dans des sacs à dos ou des sacs à main, mais de préférence les dissimuler sous les vêtements ;
  • ne pas porter d’objets de valeur sur soi (montre, bijoux, etc.), ni des sommes d’argent importantes ;
  • ne pas ranger tous ses objets de valeur/documents au même endroit (les répartir entre les bagages et/ou les différents voyageurs) ;
  • les vols de passeports étant fréquents, déposer les documents au coffre de l’hôtel et ne garder sur soi qu’une copie du passeport (ou une photo prise avec un téléphone portable), y compris la page sur laquelle se trouve le tampon d’entrée au Costa Rica ;

  • ne portez pas d'objets de valeur sur vous (montre, bijoux, etc.) ni de grosses sommes d'argent;
  • le taux de criminalité peut varier d'une ville ou d'un quartier à l'autre. Renseignez-vous sur place auprès de vos personnes de contact locales ou du personnel de l’hôtel, sur la situation et sur les quartiers à éviter;
  • Des stupéfiants sont parfois utilisés. Ils peuvent être administrés de différentes manières (dans les aliments, les boissons, les cigarettes, etc.). La prudence est donc de mise;
  • Il existe le risque que des boissons contenant de l’alcool frelaté soient vendues ou servies. Leur consommation peut avoir des conséquences mortelles;
  • il est recommandé aux femmes de se montrer particulièrement vigilantes;
  • portez une attention particulière à l'aspect sécuritaire lors du choix de votre hébergement;
  • faites preuve de prudence lors d’ invitations de la part de personnes rencontrées récemment sur place et refusez-les en cas de doute;
  • ne laissez jamais votre véhicule sans surveillance et garez-vous, si possible, dans des parkings surveillés;
  • en cas de panne, faites preuve de la plus grande prudence vis-à-vis des personnes qui vous proposent leur aide, car leurs motivations sont souvent criminelles;
  • empruntez si possible des taxis disposant d'une licence: ils sont reconnaissables car ils sont rouges avec un triangle sur le toit;
  • évitez de vous promener la nuit dans le centre de San José ou dans des zones reculées;

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Costa Rica

Although there’s no history of terrorism in Costa Rica, attacks cannot be ruled out.

Protecting your belongings

Muggings and theft are significant problems, particularly on the Atlantic coast. You should:

- be aware of who is around you when using ATMs

  • be vigilant on buses and keep your luggage in view if possible – thieves are likely to try and distract you
  • watch wallets and valuables when on the beach
  • avoid leaving luggage in a parked car, either in view or in the boot

There have been incidents where thieves slash a tyre and then offer to help change it, while an accomplice steals from the car.

Violent crime

Avoid walking alone in poorly lit or remote areas at night. Gangs occasionally carry out muggings and armed robberies. Gang-related violence, including shootings, has become more frequent in urban areas, including some locations popular with visitors. A number of foreign nationals including one British national have gone missing in recent years, with some incidents related to criminal activity.

If you’re using a hire car, do not stop your car for strangers signalling for help – they could be carjackers.

Criminals sometimes cause deliberate collisions to stop vehicles and commit robberies or other crimes. If you think a collision was a deliberate act by another driver to make you stop, drive on until you reach a safe place like a police station or garage. You will need to be able to explain your actions to the traffic police.

Spiked drinks and sexual assault

Rapes and sexual assaults have increased, some of which appear targeted toward tourists. Avoid leaving drinks unattended in bars as there have been reports of ‘spiked’ drinks resulting in assault and theft.

Women travelling alone have reported having to pay extra attention to their personal safety.

See advice for women travelling abroad .

Methanol poisoning

There have been deaths and cases of serious illness caused by alcoholic drinks containing methanol in Costa Rica.

Criminal gangs have apparently used methanol in the manufacture of cheap brands of local spirits, including vodka and ‘guaro’ (cane liquor). Take care when buying spirit-based drinks.

Even small amounts of methanol can kill. It is not possible to identify methanol in alcoholic drinks by taste or smell. See Travel Aware Drink Spiking and Methanol Poisoning for information about how to reduce the risks.

Seek urgent medical attention if you or someone you are travelling with show the signs of methanol poisoning after drinking.

Personal ID

As a foreigner, you must carry ID such as a passport. The police will usually accept a printed copy. Make sure you have the original available somewhere safe in case they ask to see it.

Illegal drugs and prison sentences

Do not get involved with drugs of any kind. The Costa Rican authorities treat the possession of drugs and drug trafficking severely. The minimum sentence is 8 years imprisonment.

LGBT+ travellers

Costa Rica is generally welcoming of LGBT+ travellers. Read more advice for LGBT+ travellers .

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies. Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Driving

You can drive with your valid Canadian driver’s licence in Costa Rica for up to 180 days, or the length of the stay granted on your entry stamp. You must also carry your passport when driving in the country. Photocopies are not acceptable. You may face a fine if you fail to provide proper documentation when stopped by a traffic officer. If you are involved in a road accident, the Costa Rican government may prevent you from leaving the country until all injury claims have been settled, regardless of which party is at fault or has insurance coverage. The local legal process may take several months. In the event of a car accident:

  • don’t move your vehicle until the authorities arrive
  • remain at the scene
  • call 911 to report the accident

Automatic speed cameras are common. If you exceed the speed limit, you may receive a speeding ticket by mail. Traffic fines don’t have to be paid on the spot. You can pay a fine:

  • at COSEVI (Costa Rican Road Safety Council)
  • at a bank

If a police officer asks you for money, you may make a complaint to the Costa Rican Tourism Bureau.

Money

The currency of Costa Rica is the Costa Rican colón (CRC). Credit cards are generally accepted. It’s extremely difficult to exchange Canadian dollars in Costa Rica. U.S. dollars are more easily exchanged. Cash withdrawals are possible with a 4-digit PIN only.

Passeport - visa

  • prendre connaissance des conditions d’importation en consultant directement la liste des documents requis pour l’importation d’un chien ou d’un chat (espagnol et anglais) sur le site du Service National de Santé Animale (SENASA), autorité costaricienne compétente ;

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Costa Rica’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Costa Rica set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Costa Rican Embassy in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

Your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 1 day after the day you plan to leave Costa Rica.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

You can visit Costa Rica without a visa for up to 180 days under a tourist visa waiver. The exact period is at the discretion of the immigration officer on arrival.

For more information on requirements or if you plan to work, or stay for a longer period, check with the Costa Rican Embassy in the UK .

If you overstay, the immigration authorities can fine you 100 US dollars for each month and refuse future applications to enter Costa Rica.

Airport tax

When leaving the country by air, you may need to pay a departure tax of 29 US dollars. Most airlines include this in ticket prices. If you need to pay it, you can use cash or card.

Vaccine requirements

To enter Costa Rica, you must have a certificate to prove you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination if you’re coming from a country listed as a transmission risk .

For details about medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, see TravelHealthPro’s Costa Rica guide .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Costa Rica (in Spanish). You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty. If you try to remove wildlife from the country, including seashells, you could be fined.

Taking money into Costa Rica

Declare cash, travellers cheques or goods if the value is 10,000 US dollars or more. You will get a certified declaration to show you brought it in with you. If you do not, your money or goods could be seized when you leave.

CrimeMODERATE

What the texts say · Gangs occasionally carry out muggings and armed robberies. Rapes and sexual assaults have increased, some of which appear targeted toward tourists.

What they advise:
  • Do not physically resist any robbery attempt.
  • Avoid leaving drinks unattended in bars as there have been reports of ‘spiked’ drinks resulting in assault and theft.
  • Avoid walking alone in poorly lit or remote areas at night.
Foreign Office · State Department
TransportMODERATE

What the texts say · Avoid using unofficial taxis (‘taxi piratas’). Criminals sometimes cause deliberate collisions to stop vehicles and commit robberies or other crimes.

What they advise:
  • It’s best to use radio-dispatched taxis.
  • Make sure the driver’s ID is clearly visible on the dashboard and that the driver uses the meter.
  • If you think a collision was a deliberate act by another driver to make you stop, drive on until you reach a safe place like a police station or garage.
Foreign Office
Nature and climateMODERATE

What the texts say · The hurricane season is from mid-May to the end of November in the Pacific, and from early June to the end of November in the Atlantic, Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. Heavy rains, particularly from mid-May to the end of November, can cause severe flooding, flash floods and landslides.

What they advise:
  • Follow the advice of local authorities, including any evacuation orders.
  • If you decide to travel to a coastal area during the hurricane season despite the risks: stay informed of the latest regional weather forecasts.
Global Affairs Canada · Foreign Office
Laws and customsTO KNOW

What the texts say · Penalties for possession, use or trafficking of illegal drugs are severe. Costa Rican law prohibits political activity by foreigners.

What they advise:
  • Carry valid identification at all times.
  • If you have an accident where somebody has been injured or where the other driver does not accept blame, you must not move your vehicle until the traffic police have arrived.
Global Affairs Canada · Foreign Office
Cyber and dataMODERATE

What the texts say · Credit card and ATM fraud occurs.

What they advise:
  • Use ATMs located in well-lit public areas or inside a bank or business.
  • Cover the keypad with one hand when entering your PIN.
Global Affairs Canada
Crowds and calendarMODERATE

What the texts say · Demonstrations take place from time to time, particularly in San José. Participating in demonstrations or activities may result in you being detained and/or deported.

What they advise: Avoid areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place.

FDFA (Switzerland) — transport and specific advice, in French

Transport and infrastructure

What is the official risk level in Costa Rica today?

Level 2/4 — Exercise Increased Caution, U.S. Department of State, retrieved on 13 October 2026.

  • Is the whole country advised against? United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no (reading of 27 September 2026).
  • Contractually, only an FDFA, FOPH or WHO advisory against the trip opens Module A (art. 18.1) — that is not the case today.
  • International medical cover, 24/7 number saved, and a read of the areas named under Safety & risks before booking the itinerary.
  • We check these sources every morning and e-mail you the day one changes (Alerts button).

Is the whole of Costa Rica advised against, or only some areas?

An area advised against does not rule out the country.

  • Official answers: United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no.
  • Keep your country of residence's advisory on booking day and on departure day: that is what your policy's clauses cite.

What are the entry requirements for Costa Rica with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): French nationals do not require a visa for stays up to 180 days but need a passport in perfect condition, valid for at least one day beyond departure. Upon entry, French travellers must present a return ticket, proof of accommodation, and sufficient financial resources for their stay. For stays exceeding 90 days, French citizens must obtain a permit from the Costa Rican embassy in Paris or immigration services.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British citizens must ensure their passport is valid for at least one day beyond their planned departure date from Costa Rica. Tourists may enter Costa Rica visa-free for up to 180 days, though the final duration is at the immigration officer's discretion. Overstaying your visa in Costa Rica can result in a fine of 100 US dollars per month and future entry refusal.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a Costa Rica visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (CHF 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.
  • Attach it to the visa file; if in doubt about the format, write to us.

What should I do if hospitalised in Costa Rica?

  • 3. See a doctor the same day and leave with the certificate: without an on-the-spot finding, nothing is covered (art. 33).
  • 4. Admitted for more than 24 h? The front desk calls Maximum: direct payment guarantee, no deposit (art. 2.12).
  • 5. Book no ambulance or flight yourself (art. 6.2.2).

Is an Amex, Visa or Mastercard enough in Costa Rica?

At today's level 2/4, card by card:

  • Amex Platinum — No area exclusion at this level — but three written limits: deductible and prior approval, 90-day cap, advance under conditions.
  • Visa — No express area exclusion — but a €156,000 cap, 90 days, and the war/instability exclusion in the background.
  • Mastercard — No exclusion in play at this level — but a €155,000 cap and 90 covered days.
  • Three lines to read in your notice: the duration (often 90 days per trip), the settlement (reimbursement afterwards or direct payment of the hospital) and the area exclusion at level 4/4.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Costa Rica?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — No area exclusion at this level — compare cap, deductible and covered duration.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.
  • Have your IPID number or the PDF of the terms and ask an expert to call you back: the answer is in the document, not in the brochure.

How do I use the medical network on this page?

The page reads hospitals, pharmacies and doctors from OpenStreetMap, around the point you choose.

  • Type your city, hotel or beach: the map re-centres, 24/7 emergency rooms come first.
  • Each row gives the phone when the source publishes it, the nearest street, directions and the Google Maps listing.
  • The PDF briefing repeats the same places, numbered on a printable map.
  • No customer reviews: OpenStreetMap has none, and we invent none.

Which vaccines and health precautions for Costa Rica?

The sourced detail is under Medical network › Health: vaccines, diseases present, altitude, outbreaks.

  • CDC (Travelers' Health), depending on the trip: Routine vaccines, COVID-19, Chikungunya, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Malaria, Measles.
  • France Diplomatie reports in the country: dengue, malaria, chikungunya — mosquito protection day and night.
  • See a doctor or a travel clinic 8 weeks before departure (Foreign Office).
  • Carry your medicines in their packaging, with a prescription using international non-proprietary names (France Diplomatie).

Can I be treated in Costa Rica, or will I be evacuated?

2.7 physicians per 1,000 people (2022) versus 4.5 in Switzerland.

  • 1.1 hospital beds per 1,000 people versus 4.4 in Switzerland (World Bank).
  • With 2.7 physicians per 1,000 people (40% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover. Health spending of 1,163 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.
  • When the local facility is not enough, Maximum's medical team decides the evacuation to a suitable centre, and pays for it (art. 6.2.2).

Costa Rica: safety, in figures?

17.8 homicides per 100,000 people (2023) versus 0.6 in Switzerland and 1.3 in France.

  • 14.8 road deaths per 100,000 people versus 2.2 in Switzerland (World Bank, WHO).
  • The homicide rate is 30 times Switzerland's: violence is a real risk there, concentrated in the areas named by the official advisories. On the road, 7 times more deaths than in Switzerland: road crashes are the leading cause of death of healthy travellers (CDC) — seat belt, no night driving, a driver or a taxi from a rank.
