How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

  • Fièvre jaune : la vaccination contre la fièvre jaune est obligatoire pour les voyageurs en provenance de zones d’endémies et fortement recommandée pour tous les autres voyageurs. La présentation du carnet de vaccinations internationales peut être exigé dans tous les cas ;
  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Méningite ACWY : en cas de séjour pendant la saison sèche (habituellement hiver et printemps) ou d’épidémie signalée ;
  • Tuberculose : chez les enfants de moins de 15 ans en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales ;
  • Chikungunya : en cas d’épidémie ou de séjour prolongé ;

Hépatite A

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Health — Foreign Office

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

There is no equivalent to the UK’s 999 emergency number in The Gambia, it is best to visit in-person to ask for emergency contact details at local stations.

Contact your insurance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

  • check the current vaccine recommendations for The Gambia
  • see how to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

See what health risks you’ll face in The Gambia including:

  • yellow fever
  • malaria and dengue
  • Zika virus
  • schistosomiasis

UNAIDS estimated that around 24,000 adults aged 15 or over in Gambia are living with HIV. The prevalence percentage was estimated at around 1.4% of the adult population compared to the prevalence percentage in adults in the UK of around 0.2%. You should use normal precautions to avoid exposure to HIV/AIDS.

Medication

The legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can be different in other countries.

If you bring prescription medication into The Gambia, take a copy of your prescription and keep items in the original packaging. Some prescription and over-the-counter medicines like those containing codeine or diazepam are banned under The Gambia’s drugs laws. For more information on the legal status of a specific medicine, check with the Gambian High Commission in the UK before you travel.

In The Gambia you will need to go to a pharmacy to get most over-the-counter medicines. Only a very limited selection are available at supermarkets or other stores. Not all medicines available in the UK will be available in The Gambia.

If you require specialist medication, check availability before travel or make arrangements to bring your medication with you. The widely used symbols are a green cross or a green ‘Bowl of Hygieia’ (a chalice or cup with a snake twined around it).

Updated 15.01.2026

Exercise increased caution in The Gambia due to crime , unrest , and inadequate health infrastructure .

Crime

Petty street crime and home burglaries happen often in The Gambia. This is most common in the Banjul area and tourist spots.

Do not display cash and valuable personal property. Avoid walking alone, including on beaches, in tourist areas, and after dark.

Unrest

A separatist rebel group operates in the Casamance region of southern Senegal. There has been sporadic fighting along The Gambia’s southern border in the recent past. Stay on main roads and do not travel at night if travelling near or across the southern border.

Health

The Gambia’s health infrastructure is inadequate. Health services, hygiene, and quality control do not meet U.S. standards of care. Pharmacies are not well regulated. Locally available medications may be unsafe.

  • Ne pas se déplacer avec des objets de valeur et d’importantes sommes d’argent ;
  • Conserver en lieu sûr (coffres d’hôtel par exemple) les documents de voyage (ne circuler qu’avec des photocopies) ;
  • Circuler avec les portières verrouillées et les fenêtres fermées ;

  • Political tensions may trigger local demonstrations with violent clashes between protesters and security forces; people have been injured or killed in past incidents. DFAE
  • Monitor media before and during travel for security updates; comply with local authorities' instructions including curfews; avoid all demonstrations and crowd gatherings. DFAE
  • In the Senegal-Casamance border region, armed groups and isolated clashes have occurred; landmines remain present and inadequately marked; use only paved main roads during daylight only. DFAE
  • Petty crime occurs including on beaches; do not carry valuables or large cash amounts; avoid deserted beaches; do not resist if attacked; decline offers from unofficial guides. DFAE
  • West African cybercrime is widespread; ignore emails requesting money transfers for emergencies, inheritances, or large gains; disregard postal documents appearing official but often fraudulent. DFAE
  • Outside Banjul, only main roads are paved; avoid night travel; fuel shortages may occur; maritime and river transport lack safety standards; heavy rains cause flooding and infrastructure damage. DFAE

  • ne portez pas sur vous d’objets de valeur (montre, bijoux, etc.) ou de grosses sommes d'argent;
  • évitez les plages désertes;
  • en cas d'agression, n'opposez aucune résistance, car les assaillants n'hésitent pas à recourir à la violence;

  • une personne, invoquant une situation d’urgence médicale ou autre (agression à main armée, placement en détention, problèmes avec les autorités, problème de visa, etc.) vous demande de lui transférer de l’argent au plus vite;
  • la demande vous est adressée de communiquer vos coordonnées bancaires au motif d’un héritage ou d’un transfert d’argent à votre profit ;
  • vous recevez des offres promettant un gain d’argent important;

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in The Gambia

Although there is no recent history of terrorism in The Gambia, attacks cannot be ruled out.

Attacks could be indiscriminate including in places visited by foreigners. Stay aware of your surroundings, keep up to date with local media reports and follow the advice of local authorities.

Political situation

Avoid large gatherings and protests in public areas and follow the advice of local authorities.

Crime

Be cautious of young men locally known as ‘bumsters’ who approach tourists, particularly on beaches, offering help or to act as local guides. They may offer to take you on tours into Senegal. It is unlikely they will follow the correct immigration procedures. This could result in you being detained by immigration authorities. They may also ask for money.

Be polite but firm in refusing unwanted help or attempts at conversation.

Corruption is present at all levels and you may be asked for bribes.

Protecting your belongings

There are reports of passports and other valuables being stolen from hotel rooms.

Petty theft is a problem in cities and tourist areas. Take care when visiting certain places, especially at night, such as:

  • isolated beaches
  • markets
  • crowded events
  • venues outside the main tourist areas

Do not take valuables or large sums of money to the beach or display them in public. Take sensible precautions to protect your personal possessions and do not leave valuables in unattended vehicles. Keep a copy of your passport’s photo page, and your entry stamp, in a separate place.

Local travel

Security checkpoints operate in and around the capital Banjul and are common on all major routes in The Gambia. They are not always well sign-posted. Take care when approaching them and expect your vehicle to be searched if you’re stopped by security forces.

Laws and cultural differences

The Gambia is an Islamic country. Respect local traditions, customs, laws and religions. Make sure your actions do not cause offence, especially during the holy month of Ramadan or if you intend to visit religious areas. There may be serious penalties for doing something that might not be illegal in the UK but is in The Gambia.

Ramadan

Ramadan is a holy month for Muslims. The dates vary by year and country. During this time, you should be respectful of those who are fasting.

Get more advice when you arrive from your tour guide, hotel or business contacts.

You should also:

  • check opening hours of shops and restaurants
  • be aware that driving may be erratic, particularly when people are trying to get home at dusk
  • be patient and show tolerance
Personal ID

As a foreign national, you must carry ID such as a passport. The police will usually accept a printed copy.

Public offences

There are severe penalties for any form of sexual offence against a child. There are reports of increased child sex tourism. Report any incidents to the police.

Detainment

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. • act as quickly as you can
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in The Gambia to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

Although the law specifies that detainees cannot be held for longer than 72 hours without charge, this is regularly exceeded. The death penalty applies for a number of crimes including arson, murder and treason. A pause on the death penalty is in place.

Illegal drugs and prison sentences

There is a zero tolerance towards illegal drugs. This includes importing, exporting, or possession of drugs. Do not accept packages on behalf of anyone without knowing the contents. Sentences for those found in possession of drugs can be severe, including fines or prison sentences. Cases of entrapment by Gambian authorities are not uncommon.

LGBT+ travellers

There is a zero tolerance towards LGBT+ people in The Gambia. Same-sex relationships are illegal and could lead to lengthy prison sentences. Gambian law criminalises the act of men dressing as women with a 5-year jail term. Read more advice for LGBT+ travellers.

Money

The Gambia is primarily a cash-based economy. Check with your tour operator or hotel before travelling. An increasing number of hotels and restaurants accept Visa cards but very few accept credit cards. There are not many ATMs outside the tourist area of Senegambia. In other locations, ATMs can be unreliable.

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of The Gambia’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in The Gambia set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Gambian High Commission in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

To enter The Gambia, your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

You do not need a visa to visit The Gambia. You’ll get a stamp in your passport that allows you to stay for 28 days when you arrive.

You can get 2 extensions of 28 days from the Immigration Office in Banjul or the tourist police stations in the Tourism Development Area.

You’ll need a residence permit for longer stays. For more information contact the Gambian High Commission in the UK .

Airport tax

You must pay an Airport Security Fee when you arrive in and leave the country. The fee is 20 US dollars, which can also be paid in euros, British pounds, or local currency. Visa credit cards are accepted but card machines are often out of service. You can pay the fee at marked kiosks in Banjul International Airport. Children aged 1 or under and passengers transiting are exempt.

Entry through land borders

If you are driving across the border in a private vehicle you may be asked to pay a vehicle registration fee.

Vaccine requirements

To enter The Gambia, you must have a certificate to prove you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination if you’re coming from a country listed as a transmission risk .

You may need a yellow fever certificate for onward travel to some other countries, due to the risk of yellow fever in The Gambia.

For full details about medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, see TravelHealthPro’s The Gambia guide .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of The Gambia . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Transport and infrastructure

Getting help — Foreign Office

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) cannot provide tailored advice for individual trips. Read this travel advice and carry out your own research before deciding whether to travel.

Emergency services in The Gambia

There is no equivalent to the UK’s 999 emergency number in The Gambia. Individual police stations and fire stations have their own numbers (these are often mobile numbers, as many do not have a landline). There are no publications listing these numbers so it is best to visit in-person to ask for emergency contact details at local stations.

Contact your travel provider and insurer

Contact your travel provider and your insurer if you are involved in a serious incident or emergency abroad. They will tell you if they can help and what you need to do.

Useful phrases

English is an official language in the Gambia: no translated phrases here.

  • Keep the entry stamp, hospital invoices and the medical report. Without them a claim cannot be rebuilt.
  • File it from the claim form, once back, with those papers.
  • The France Diplomatie health page mentions dengue and malaria and chikungunya. A fever in the weeks after return should be told to a doctor, naming the country.

Frequently asked questions — travel insurance Gambia

24/7 support number — +41 22 ••• •• ••An adviser goes through each question with you until you have an actionable answer: cover, hospital, entry rules, claims. Full number in your client area. You can also ask Maximum directly, just below these questions.
What is the official risk level in Gambia today?

Level 2/4 — Exercise Increased Caution, U.S. Department of State, retrieved on 16 October 2026.

  • Is the whole country advised against? United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no (reading of 27 September 2026).
  • Contractually, only an FDFA, FOPH or WHO advisory against the trip opens Module A (art. 18.1) — that is not the case today.
  • International medical cover, 24/7 number saved, and a read of the areas named under Safety & risks before booking the itinerary.
  • We check these sources every morning and e-mail you the day one changes (Alerts button).

Is the whole of Gambia advised against, or only some areas?

An area advised against does not rule out the country.

  • Official answers: United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no.
  • Keep your country of residence's advisory on booking day and on departure day: that is what your policy's clauses cite.

What are the entry requirements for Gambia with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): French nationals receive a free short-stay visa on arrival in Gambia, valid for fifteen days and renewable, stamped directly in the passport. Vehicles registered in Senegal must pay 100 GMD (approximately 2 euros) for a 'passavant' at Gambian customs upon entry; any other monetary demands lack legal basis. Air travellers must pay an airport tax of 1000 GMD or 20 euros or 20 US dollars at both entry and exit, except holders of diplomatic passports.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British citizens need a passport valid for their entire stay in The Gambia; entry will be denied with an invalid, lost, or stolen passport. British citizens do not need a visa for The Gambia and receive a 28-day stamp on arrival; two 28-day extensions are available from the Immigration Office in Banjul or tourist police stations. You must pay a 20 US dollar Airport Security Fee upon arrival and departure, payable in USD, euros, British pounds, or local currency at marked kiosks; children aged one or under and transit passengers are exempt.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a Gambia visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (EUR 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.
  • Attach it to the visa file; if in doubt about the format, write to us.

What should I do if hospitalised in Gambia?

  • 2. Ask for a hospital in the Maximum network (art. 6.9).
  • 3. See a doctor the same day and leave with the certificate: without an on-the-spot finding, nothing is covered (art. 33).

  • 5. Book no ambulance or flight yourself (art. 6.2.2).

Is an Amex, Visa or Mastercard enough in Gambia?

At today's level 2/4, card by card:

  • Amex Platinum — No area exclusion at this level — but three written limits: deductible and prior approval, 90-day cap, advance under conditions.
  • Visa — No express area exclusion — but a €156,000 cap, 90 days, and the war/instability exclusion in the background.
  • Mastercard — No exclusion in play at this level — but a €155,000 cap and 90 covered days.
  • Three lines to read in your notice: the duration (often 90 days per trip), the settlement (reimbursement afterwards or direct payment of the hospital) and the area exclusion at level 4/4.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Gambia?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — No area exclusion at this level — compare cap, deductible and covered duration.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.
  • Have your IPID number or the PDF of the terms and ask an expert to call you back: the answer is in the document, not in the brochure.

How do I use the medical network on this page?

The page reads hospitals, pharmacies and doctors from OpenStreetMap, around the point you choose.

  • Type your city, hotel or beach: the map re-centres, 24/7 emergency rooms come first.
  • Each row gives the phone when the source publishes it, the nearest street, directions and the Google Maps listing.
  • The PDF briefing repeats the same places, numbered on a printable map.
  • No customer reviews: OpenStreetMap has none, and we invent none.

Which vaccines and health precautions for Gambia?

The sourced detail is under Medical network › Health: vaccines, diseases present, altitude, outbreaks.

  • France Diplomatie reports in the country: dengue, malaria, chikungunya — mosquito protection day and night.
  • See a doctor or a travel clinic 8 weeks before departure (Foreign Office).
  • Carry your medicines in their packaging, with a prescription using international non-proprietary names (France Diplomatie).

Can I be treated in Gambia, or will I be evacuated?

0.1 physicians per 1,000 people (2023) versus 4.5 in Switzerland.

  • 1.1 hospital beds per 1,000 people versus 4.4 in Switzerland (World Bank).
  • With 0.1 physicians per 1,000 people (98% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover. Health spending of 26 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.
  • When the local facility is not enough, Maximum's medical team decides the evacuation to a suitable centre, and pays for it (art. 6.2.2).

Gambia: safety, in figures?

Comparable figures (homicides, roads, incidents) are under Safety & risks › Incidents.

  • 29.6 road deaths per 100,000 people versus 2.2 in Switzerland (World Bank, WHO).
  • On the road, 13 times more deaths than in Switzerland: road crashes are the leading cause of death of healthy travellers (CDC) — seat belt, no night driving, a driver or a taxi from a rank.

Which regions of Gambia should I avoid, precisely?

No region is advised against by the official readings checked (Global Affairs Canada, Foreign Office and France Diplomatie): the national advice applies everywhere.

  • Your point (Banjul): country-wide vigilance.
  • Maximum does not exclude these areas: the VIP Pack covers care and repatriation there (sanctions, embargoes and a country already at war at departure remain enforceable).

Which laws and customs should I know in Gambia?

Local laws apply to every traveller; here is what the official texts say.

  • Canadian travellers must carry identification, such as a passport, and may be asked to present it to police; a printed copy is usually accepted.
  • Travellers must abide by local laws, which are influenced by Islamic traditions; respect religious and social customs, especially during Ramadan, to avoid causing offence.
  • Possession, use, or trafficking of illegal drugs carries severe penalties, including lengthy prison sentences; entrapment by authorities is not uncommon.
  • Same-sex sexual acts are illegal and can result in imprisonment for up to 14 years; LGBT+ travellers should carefully consider the risks.
  • Photography of airports, government buildings, military installations, and embassies is prohibited; smoking in public buildings is also an offence.
