How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

  • Fièvre jaune : obligatoire pour les voyageurs en provenance de zones d’endémie ;
  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • T uberculose : chez les enfants de moins de 15 ans en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales ;
  • Chikungunya : en cas d’épidémie ou de séjour prolongé ;
  • Dengue : en cas d’épidémie active ou de séjour prolongé en zone endémique ;
  • Encéphalite japonaise : en fonction des conditions et de la durée du séjour ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

  • adopter une attitude discrète et respectueuse en tout lieu et toute circonstance ;
  • veiller à maintenir une tenue décente, en particulier dans et aux abords des temples, édifices religieux et sites patrimoniaux historiques ;
  • se prêter de bonne grâce aux contrôles policiers ;
  • placer son passeport en lieu sûr et ne conserver sur soi qu’une copie ; ne pas laisser son passeport aux agences de location de véhicules (voitures ou deux roues) ou aux hôteliers ;
  • en cas d’agression, n’opposer aucune résistance et rapporter l’incident au poste de police compétent à raison du lieu de l’agression ;
  • se tenir à l’écart de toute manifestation ;

In brief
  • Avoid the Thailand-Cambodia border region entirely; border crossings are closed to tourists and military clashes have occurred near Preah Vihear, Ta Khwai and Ta Muen Thom temples since late July 2025. DFAE
  • Do not stray from marked paths when visiting Angkor Wat temples in Siem Reap province due to remaining landmines; stick to traditional tourist zones and heavily trafficked roads only. DFAE
  • Leave valuables and large cash amounts in your hotel safe, keeping only a passport photocopy; avoid walking or using motorcycles after dark, and use taxis or tuk-tuks with theft protection instead. DFAE
  • Refuse invitations from strangers, as organised criminals may coerce you into gambling, extortion schemes or employment scams; narcotics may be administered in food, drinks or cigarettes. DFAE
  • Do not drive on inter-urban roads at night due to very high accident risk from poorly maintained vehicles and unpredictable road users; expect frequent fatal crashes. DFAE
  • During rainy season, expect flooding near the Mekong and Tonle Sap; monitor weather forecasts and follow local authority instructions, as infrastructure damage and tourist disruptions may occur. DFAE

Warnings — Foreign Office

Your travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel against advice from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO).

Areas where FCDO advises against travel

FCDO  advises against all but essential travel to within 20km from the land border with Thailand.

Heavy fighting along parts of the Thailand and Cambodia border, including the use of airstrikes, rocket and artillery fire, took place in 2025. A ceasefire was signed on 27 December, but the situation remains tense.

Land borders and crossings between Cambodia and Thailand continue to be suspended. Some tourist destinations in border areas such as the Preah Vihear/Khao Phra Wihan temple, the Ta Krabey/Ta Kwai temple and the Tamone Thom/Ta Muen Thom temple are closed.

There are also unexploded ordnance, including landmines, in the border area.

Safety — Foreign OfficeForeign Office ↗updated 19.03.2026 · read 16.10.2026

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Cambodia

Although there’s no recent history of terrorism in Cambodia, attacks cannot be ruled out.

Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by expatriates and foreign travellers. Stay aware of your surroundings, keep up to date with local media and follow the advice of local authorities.

Land borders

Be alert to the local security situation in border regions and at land crossings between countries. Get local advice before you set off. At the more remote crossing points, conditions can be basic. Local officials and tour operators can ask for unofficial fees or inflate visa prices at land borders. Make sure you know the correct visa requirements and fees before you travel.

Protests and demonstrations

Avoid all protests, demonstrations and student and political rallies as they can become violent without warning.

Landmines

Cambodia remains heavily affected by landmines and unexploded weapons. Mined areas are often unmarked. Do not:

  • stray off main routes in rural areas, including around temple complexes
  • pick up metal objects
Organised crime

A bomb was left near a casino in Phnom Penh in December 2022 and there was a shooting in the same month. Both were likely linked to organised crime, and tourists were not targeted.

Protecting yourself and your belongings

Most incidents of theft are bag snatchings, often by thieves riding past on motorbikes. Thieves will cut bag straps and snatch bags or phones from tourists on foot or in tuk-tuks and on motorbikes, often causing injury. There have been incidents on bus journeys where passengers have had items taken from bags while asleep.

Hotspots for petty crime include:

  • the riverfront and BKK areas of Phnom Penh
  • the beaches and tourist areas of Sihanoukville and nearby islands

To reduce your risk from street crime:

  • use a hotel safe for your valuables
  • take extra care at night and in isolated areas and stick to well-used, well-lit roads

  • carry bags on the side of you that is furthest from the road
  • do not place bags in the front basket of bicycles
  • try to travel in tuk-tuks with metal grills on the back and side that offer some protection against bag snatching
Sexual assault

Female travellers, including British nationals, have been sexually assaulted in Siem Reap and Sihanoukville. This includes incidents of lone women being sexually assaulted by men claiming to be motorbike taxi drivers in the Pub Street area of Siem Reap. Be wary of approaches from strangers and offers of transport.

Personal safety

Parties, including organised dance parties on Cambodia’s islands, may place you at risk of:

  • sexual assault
  • robbery
  • injury
  • arrest
  • losing belongings, including travel documents

Islands are often isolated and access to medical or emergency assistance is limited or non-existent.

Cambodians are friendly, but you should be wary if a Cambodian or other foreign national befriends you quickly and invites you to their home or hotel to meet their family.

Local laws

You must abide by local laws. Learn about what you should do and how we can help if you are arrested or detained abroad.

Drugs

There are severe penalties for the possession, use or trafficking of illegal drugs. If you are convicted, you can expect lengthy jail sentences and steep fines. Drugs, alcohol and travel

Expulsion, deportation and limitation of visit

Cambodian authorities can expel, deport or limit a traveller's visit if you are accused, or suspected of:

  • violating local laws, which include possession of invalid entry documents and requirements
  • having a criminal record
  • being involved in criminal activities
  • suffering from mental illness or serious transmitted diseases
Legal process

Detention during the investigative period is common and can exceed 6 months before charges are laid.

Overstaying a visa

Immigration regulations are strict. You could face fines, detention and deportation if you overstay your visa. There is a daily fine for overstaying the validity of your visa. There is no limit to this fine. If you overstay more than 30 days, you will need to leave Cambodia in addition to paying the fine.

Exploitation of minors

There are harsh penalties for sexual exploitation of minors. It is a serious offence in Cambodia. Canadians may also be subject to criminal proceedings in Canada for acts of this nature committed while abroad. Child Sex Tourism: It’s a Crime

Surrogacy

All forms of commercial surrogacy are illegal in Cambodia. Penalties for surrogates, as well as operators of clinics and hospitals providing surrogacy services, may include imprisonment and/or fines. If you have already entered into a surrogacy agreement, you should seek advice from a local lawyer on how these guidelines, including its exit requirements, apply to your situation.

Cultural heritage and antiquities

A permit is required to purchase, export or possess cultural or archaeological artefacts. To avoid any difficulties, make sure you obtain and carry the required legal paperwork to purchase or export antiquities.

2SLGBTQI+ persons

Cambodian law doesn't prohibit sexual acts between individuals of the same sex. Travel and your sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. It does not apply between Canada and Cambodia. If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Cambodia by an abducting parent:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Cambodia to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies. Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Driving

You must have and carry a Cambodian driver's licence. Helmets are mandatory for motorcycle riders, but many helmets do not meet international safety standards. Ensure your medical insurance will cover you when riding as a driver or passenger.

Dress and behaviour

There are reports of local authorities cracking down on events such as pub crawls, raves, booze cruises and pool parties, as well as other events where recreational drugs may be present. Avoid these types of events. Behaviour that is deemed scandalous, drunken or disorderly is considered highly disrespectful to the local culture and population, especially near the Angkor temples. To avoid offending local sensitivities:

  • dress conservatively
  • behave discreetly
  • respect religious and social traditions
  • do not photograph airports or military installations
  • ask permission before photographing individuals, including Buddhist monks
Money

The currency is the riel (KHR). U.S. dollars are also widely used. Only newer, undamaged notes are accepted. Notes with the slightest tear will not be accepted. Credit cards are not widely accepted outside major cities. Some banks in Phnom Penh accept certain credit cards for cash advances. There are many ATMs in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Sihanoukville but fewer in smaller cities.

Foreign Office — laws and cultural differences

Personal ID

It may be useful to carry a copy of the photo page of your passport, but this is not a legal requirement in Cambodia.

Legal system and prison sentences

The legal process in Cambodia is unpredictable, lacks transparency and is open to interference from political and business interests. The investigation and trial process falls far below the standard of the UK. Pre-trial detention can also last many months. The British Embassy will not interfere in the legal processes of a host country. The conditions in Cambodian prisons are extremely poor and overcrowded. Medical facilities in prisons are also very poor. The UK has no prisoner transfer agreement with Cambodia so if you’re found guilty you can expect to serve your full prison term in Cambodia.

Illegal drugs

Possession, trafficking and manufacture of any illegal drugs are serious offences in Cambodia. This includes cannabis. British nationals have been caught carrying cannabis while transiting through Cambodia. Airports in Cambodia have excellent technology and security for detecting illegal items. This is also used to scan the baggage of transiting passengers. The Cambodia authorities have a zero-tolerance policy to drug offences. Possessing drugs, even in very small quantities, can carry severe penalties, including:

  • arrest and detention
  • a long jail sentence if charged and convicted. This can include a life sentence with no reduction for good behaviour

Legal processes before court hearings can be long and expensive. It can take many months for a case to come to trial. Criminal gangs in the UK and elsewhere have been known to coerce people into carrying drugs across borders. Do not allow yourself to be persuaded. It is important to be aware of your rights if you are detained by the police. See our guidance for those detained or imprisoned in Cambodia. Police often raid venues known to be frequented by foreigners. You may have to take a urine or blood test if there is a suspicion you have used drugs. You will be arrested if the test is positive.

Angkor Wat official code of conduct

The Cambodian authorities have issued an official code of conduct for visitors at Angkor Wat and other religious sites.

Dress code

You may be refused admission to religious sites, including Angkor Wat, if you wear skirts or shorts above the knee. Cover bare shoulders.

Using cameras in secure areas

Never take photographs on or near military bases. Ask permission before taking pictures of people, especially monks and other religious figures.

Research, photography and filming

Request permission in advance from the district head, provincial governor or national tourism board for any travel that authorities might see as out of the ordinary, including:

  • scientific research of any kind
  • carrying out surveys
  • extensive photography or filming
LGBT+ travellers

Same-sex sexual activity is legal in Cambodia. The LGBT+ community is becoming more visible, through gay clubs, club nights and the work of some human rights organisations. Read more advice for LGBT+ travellers.

Adopting Cambodian children

The UK government has suspended all adoptions of Cambodian children by UK residents.

Commercial surrogacy

Commercial surrogacy is banned in Cambodia. If you pay a surrogate, you could get a fine or a prison sentence. See guidance on surrogacy abroad.

Phone and data connections

While there is good wi-fi and mobile phone networks in the main cities and towns of Cambodia, many of the islands and remote areas are not well covered. Make sure your friends and family are aware that you may be out of contact.

Health and safety

Cambodia does not have the same health and safety standards as in the UK. Be aware that safety advice will be minimal and there may be no warning signs about dangers at tourist sites.

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Cambodia’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Cambodia set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Royal Embassy of Cambodia in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

To enter Cambodia your passport must be:

  • valid for at least 6 months from the date you arrive in Cambodia
  • undamaged and complete – entry is normally refused if you have a damaged passport or pages missing

If you apply to renew or extend your visa from within Cambodia, your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the start date of that subsequent renewal or extension.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual Citizenship .

Visa requirements

You must have a visa to enter Cambodia as a visitor.

Tourist visas are valid for 30 days from the date of entry into Cambodia. Make sure your passport is stamped on arrival and keep the departure form. If you lose your departure form, you’ll need to contact immigration officials before you leave the country to make alternative arrangements.

Applying for a tourist visa

Apply for an e-visa at least 4 days in advance (this website may not work in certain web browsers). You can also apply on the official e-visa app on iOS or Android .

Check with the Royal Embassy of Cambodia in the UK for the latest information on fees, conditions and photograph requirements. If you do not get an e-visa, you can get a visa on arrival at airports or land border crossings. You need to provide a photo and pay in US dollars.

You can also get an extension of a tourist visa while you are in Cambodia.

You can be fined, detained and deported if you overstay your visa. There is no limit to this fine. If you overstay more than 30 days, you will need to leave Cambodia and pay the fine.

Electronic arrival card

On 1 September 2024, Cambodia implemented an electronic Arrival Card.  If you are entering Cambodia by air at either Phnom Penh, Siem Reap or Sihanoukville international airports, you must complete and submit an electronic e-Arrival Card within 7 days prior to your arrival. There is no charge for this.

Business visas and work permits

Business visas are issued by the immigration department and are available:

- on arrival in Phnom Penh airport

- at the immigration department

- in advance from any Cambodian embassy

To work in Cambodia you need a business visa and a work permit. Your employer will need to apply for your work permit from the Department of Labour and Social Affairs.

The Cambodian government strictly enforces these rules, so ask the relevant department for the latest advice.

Vaccine requirements

To enter Cambodia, you must have a certificate to prove you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination if you’re coming from a country listed as a transmission…

What the texts say · Most incidents of theft are bag snatchings, often by thieves riding past on motorbikes. Police have reported instances of drink spiking in some bars visited by foreign nationals.

What they advise:
  • If you are robbed, hand over cash, electronic devices and valuables without resistance.
  • Do not leave drinks unattended.
  • Carry bags on the side of you that is furthest from the road.

TransportMODERATE

What the texts say · Travelling as a passenger by motorcycle taxi (‘moto dop’) is dangerous. Vehicles are poorly maintained and driving standards are low. There is also a risk that thieves (also on motorcycles) will snatch bags from off your bike, particularly in Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville.

What they advise:
  • Try to travel in tuk-tuks with metal grills on the back and side that offer some protection against bag snatching.
  • Poor drainage results in flooded roads, causing major traffic congestion and delays in Phnom Penh - including along the route to the airport.

FDFA (Switzerland) — transport and specific advice, in French

Transport and infrastructure

Fire: 118

Ambulance: 119

Tourist police in Cambodia

If you want to report a crime, you can go to the tourist police.

You can get a police report for insurance purposes, but police are not always willing to investigate crimes.

A police report should be free. If police ask for a fee contact the British Embassy in Phnom Penh and give details of the police station.

To report a crime:

- in Phnom Penh, go to the Tourist Police at Street 598, 12107 (Tel +855 (0)12 942 484)

- in Siem Reap, go to the Tourist Police office which is next to the ticketing booth for the Angkor temple ruins

- in Sihanoukville, Battambang and other towns in Cambodia, check with the local police which police station you should report to

Local law enforcement response to a crime, including a violent crime, is often limited. Foreigners attempting to report crimes have found:

- police stations closed

- emergency telephone numbers unanswered

- police unwilling to investigate

- police unable to speak English

What is the official risk level in Cambodia today?

Level 2/4 — Exercise Increased Caution, U.S. Department of State, retrieved on 16 October 2026.

  • Is the whole country advised against? United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no (reading of 27 September 2026).
  • Switzerland’s FDFA advises against travel to certain regions (published 08.06.2026).
  • Contractually, only an FDFA, FOPH or WHO advisory against the trip opens Module A (art. 18.1) — that is not the case today.

Is the whole of Cambodia advised against, or only some areas?

An area advised against does not rule out the country.

What are the entry requirements for Cambodia with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): All travel to Cambodia requires insurance covering hospitalisation and repatriation costs; the embassy will not cover these expenses. A visa is mandatory for Cambodia. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your visa expiry date. Obtain an e-visa before departure at https://www.evisa.gov.kh/ for tourism (type T) or business (type E), or at the Cambodian embassy in your country.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): Your passport must be valid for at least six months from your arrival date in Cambodia, undamaged and complete, or entry will be refused. You must obtain a tourist e-visa at least four days in advance through the official website or app, or obtain one on arrival at airports or land borders with a photo and US dollars payment. Tourist visas are valid for thirty days from entry; you must keep your departure form and risk fines, detention and deportation if you overstay.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a Cambodia visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (EUR 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.
  • Attach it to the visa file; if in doubt about the format, write to us.

What should I do if hospitalised in Cambodia?

Six steps, in this order.

  • 1. Call +41 22 ••• •• •• before paying anything, or have the front desk call: it is the condition for full cover (otherwise: reduced or refused benefits).
  • 2. Ask for a hospital in the Maximum network (art. 6.9).
  • 3. See a doctor the same day and leave with the certificate: without an on-the-spot finding, nothing is covered (art. 33).
  • 4. Admitted for more than 24 h? The front desk calls Maximum: direct payment guarantee, no deposit (art. 2.12).
  • 5. Book no ambulance or flight yourself (art. 6.2.2).

Is an Amex, Visa or Mastercard enough in Cambodia?

At today's level 2/4, card by card:

  • Amex Platinum — No area exclusion at this level — but three written limits: deductible and prior approval, 90-day cap, advance under conditions.
  • Visa — No express area exclusion — but a €156,000 cap, 90 days, and the war/instability exclusion in the background.
  • Mastercard — No exclusion in play at this level — but a €155,000 cap and 90 covered days.
  • Three lines to read in your notice: the duration (often 90 days per trip), the settlement (reimbursement afterwards or direct payment of the hospital) and the area exclusion at level 4/4.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Cambodia?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — No area exclusion at this level — compare cap, deductible and covered duration.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.
  • Have your IPID number or the PDF of the terms and ask an expert to call you back: the answer is in the document, not in the brochure.

How do I use the medical network on this page?

The page reads hospitals, pharmacies and doctors from OpenStreetMap, around the point you choose.

  • Type your city, hotel or beach: the map re-centres, 24/7 emergency rooms come first.
  • Each row gives the phone when the source publishes it, the nearest street, directions and the Google Maps listing.
  • The PDF briefing repeats the same places, numbered on a printable map.
  • No customer reviews: OpenStreetMap has none, and we invent none.

Which vaccines and health precautions for Cambodia?

The sourced detail is under Medical network › Health: vaccines, diseases present, altitude, outbreaks.

  • CDC (Travelers' Health), depending on the trip: Routine vaccines, COVID-19, Chikungunya, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Japanese Encephalitis, Malaria.
  • France Diplomatie reports in the country: dengue, malaria, chikungunya — mosquito protection day and night.
  • WHO: 1 outbreak alert(s) for this country in the last 24 months, including “Avian Influenza A(H5N1) - Cambodia” (5 July 2025).
  • See a doctor or a travel clinic 8 weeks before departure (Foreign Office).
  • Carry your medicines in their packaging, with a prescription using international non-proprietary names (France Diplomatie).

Can I be treated in Cambodia, or will I be evacuated?

0.2 physicians per 1,000 people (2019) versus 4.5 in Switzerland.

  • 0.7 hospital beds per 1,000 people versus 4.4 in Switzerland (World Bank).
  • With 0.2 physicians per 1,000 people (96% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover. Health spending of 115 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.
  • When the local facility is not enough, Maximum's medical team decides the evacuation to a suitable centre, and pays for it (art. 6.2.2).

Cambodia: safety, in figures?

Comparable figures (homicides, roads, incidents) are under Safety & risks › Incidents.

  • 19.6 road deaths per 100,000 people versus 2.2 in Switzerland (World Bank, WHO).
  • On the road, 9 times more deaths than in Switzerland: road crashes are the leading cause of death of healthy travellers (CDC) — seat belt, no night driving, a driver or a taxi from a rank.

Which regions of Cambodia should I avoid, precisely?

No whole region is advised against, but Global Affairs Canada, Foreign Office and France Diplomatie advise against specific areas (border zone, locality, route…): the map does not draw them, their text is quoted below.

  • Your point (Phnom Penh): country-wide vigilance.
  • Areas quoted without a region: Global Affairs Canada — Avoid all travel to the area within 50 kilometres of the Cambodia-Thailand border due to…; Foreign Office — FCDO advises against all but essential travel to within 20km from the land border with…
  • Maximum does not exclude these areas: the VIP Pack covers care and repatriation there (sanctions, embargoes and a country already at war at departure remain enforceable).

Which laws and customs should I know in Cambodia?

Local laws apply to every traveller; here is what the official texts say.

  • Possession of any illegal drugs, including cannabis, carries severe penalties up to life imprisonment with no reduction for good behaviour; airports have advanced detection technology scanning all baggage including transit passengers.
  • Overstaying your visa incurs daily fines with no limit; if you overstay more than 30 days, you must leave Cambodia in addition to paying the fine.
  • Pre-trial detention commonly exceeds 6 months before charges are laid; the legal process lacks transparency and falls below UK standards; the UK has no prisoner transfer agreement with Cambodia.
  • You must carry a valid Cambodian driver's licence to drive; helmets are mandatory for motorcycle riders but many do not meet international safety standards.
  • All forms of commercial surrogacy are illegal; penalties include imprisonment and fines for surrogates and clinic operators; sexual exploitation of minors carries harsh penalties and may result in criminal proceedings in Canada.
