How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult a doctor or international vaccination center for health assessments and recommendations, including vaccinations, at least eight weeks before travel.
  • Carry necessary personal medications in their original packaging with an international common name prescription, ensuring they are permitted in the destination country.
  • Ensure all French vaccinations are up-to-date, particularly for diphtheria, tetanus, polio, and measles, as a vaccination booklet may be requested upon arrival.
  • Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for travellers from endemic zones aged nine months and older, and strongly recommended for all others.
  • Medical facilities are generally poor outside of major cities; carry sufficient medication and consider evacuation to Switzerland for serious treatment.
  • For French nationals, consult your doctor or an international vaccination center for health advice and necessary vaccinations before your trip.

  • Fièvre jaune : l a vaccination contre la fièvre jaune est obligatoire pour les voyageurs en provenance de zones d’endémies, à partir de l'âge de 9 mois, et fortement recommandée pour tous les autres voyageurs. La présentation du carnet de vaccinations internationales peut être exigé dans tous les cas ;
  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Tuberculose : chez les enfants de moins de 15 ans en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales ;
  • Chikungunya : en cas d’épidémie ou de séjour prolongé ;
  • Dengue : en cas d’épidémie active ou de séjour prolongé en zone endémique ;

Hépatite A

  • Ne pas consommer ni manipuler de viande de brousse ;
  • Se laver les mains fréquemment au savon ou avec les solutions de lavage hydro-alcooliques ;
  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Updated 06.10.2025

Exercise increased caution in Equatorial Guinea due to risk of crime , health , and arbitrary enforcement of laws .

Crime

Petty crime is common throughout the country. Local police may lack the resources to respond effectively to reports of crime, even serious crime.

Health

Medical services in Equatorial Guinea are limited. There are no adequate trauma or ambulance services. Even minor health issues may require medical evacuation at the traveler’s expense. Be sure to bring enough prescription medications to last the entire duration of your trip. Make sure you have medical or travel insurance that includes medical evacuation. Review our information on Travel Insurance .

Other

Travelers face the risk of arbitrary enforcement of local laws that may result in harassment and detention.

  • Être particulièrement vigilant aux abords des lieux de divertissements nocturnes (bars, discothèques, restaurants) susceptibles d’attirer des personnes mal intentionnées ;
  • Éviter l’utilisation des taxis de manière isolée, y compris en journée, et préférer le recours à un véhicule loué avec chauffeur. En l’absence d’alternative, les trajets en groupe sont recommandés, en particulier la nuit ;
  • Ne pas laisser d’objets de valeur, d’objets apparents pouvant susciter la convoitise (courses, sac), et ses documents d’identité, sans surveillance, dans son véhicule ;
  • Conserver ses documents d’identité sur soi et disposer de photocopies à son domicile ;
  • Éviter de se déplacer en ville avec des bijoux de valeur apparents ;
  • Se munir d’un téléphone portable et d’une fiche de numéros de téléphone utiles en cas d’urgence ;
  • S’arrêter impérativement aux barrages routiers et garder un comportement courtois. Les barrages de forces de l’ordre peuvent donner lieu au versement de « droits de passage » ;
  • Fermer portes et fenêtres à son domicile ;

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Equatorial Guinea’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Equatorial Guinea set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Equatorial Guinea Embassy in the UK:

Telephone: +44 7918 289 393

Email: info@embareage-londres.uk

Passport validity requirements

To enter Equatorial Guinea, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

You must have a visa to visit Equatorial Guinea. Short-term visas are valid for 90 days. For longer stays you must apply at local police stations.

Applying for a visa

Complete the online visa application form and upload the required documents. The processing time is 72 hours. Print out the e-visa letter to present on arrival, and border officials will issue your visa.

You can also apply in person at the embassy and get the visa before you travel.

Make sure you get your passport stamped.

Make sure the border control officer issues your visa and puts a stamp in your passport. Travellers have reported being delayed or threatened with detention because their passports have not been properly processed.

Residence permits

Long-term visitors must get a residence permit of one-year validity from the Ministry of National Security. If you have a residence permit, you will not need a visa.

Vaccine requirements

You must have a certificate to prove you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination, due to a risk of yellow fever transmission.

For full details about medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, including yellow fever, see TravelHealthPro’s Equatorial Guinea guide .

Health screening

You may have to fill in a health questionnaire about any recent travel to Ebola-affected countries, including Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.

Customs rules

You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

FDFA (Switzerland) — transport and specific advice, in French

Transport and infrastructure

What is the official risk level in Equatorial Guinea today?

Level 2/4 — Exercise Increased Caution, U.S. Department of State, retrieved on 16 October 2026.

  • Is the whole country advised against? United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no (reading of 27 September 2026).
  • Contractually, only an FDFA, FOPH or WHO advisory against the trip opens Module A (art. 18.1) — that is not the case today.
  • International medical cover, 24/7 number saved, and a read of the areas named under Safety & risks before booking the itinerary.

Is the whole of Equatorial Guinea advised against, or only some areas?

An area advised against does not rule out the country.

  • Official answers: United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no.
  • Keep your country of residence's advisory on booking day and on departure day: that is what your policy's clauses cite.

What are the entry requirements for Equatorial Guinea with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): French nationals require a visa for Equatorial Guinea, obtainable online or from the Embassy in Paris; visas cannot be acquired upon arrival. Visa applications for short stays (maximum 90 days) require a completed form, a passport valid for at least six months, two photos, and a criminal record extract. Additional visa documents include an invitation letter endorsed by the Ministry of National Security, a mission order for professionals, and an international vaccination booklet showing the mandatory yellow fever vaccine.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British citizens must ensure their passport is valid for at least six months beyond their arrival date in Equatorial Guinea. A visa is required for short-term visits, valid for 90 days, and can be obtained online within 72 hours or in person at the embassy. Long-term visitors need a one-year residence permit from the Ministry of National Security, which exempts them from needing a visa.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a Equatorial Guinea visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (EUR 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.
  • Attach it to the visa file; if in doubt about the format, write to us.

Is an Amex, Visa or Mastercard enough in Equatorial Guinea?

  • Amex Platinum — No area exclusion at this level — but three written limits: deductible and prior approval, 90-day cap, advance under conditions.
  • Visa — No express area exclusion — but a €156,000 cap, 90 days, and the war/instability exclusion in the background.
  • Mastercard — No exclusion in play at this level — but a €155,000 cap and 90 covered days.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Equatorial Guinea?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — No area exclusion at this level — compare cap, deductible and covered duration.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.
  • Have your IPID number or the PDF of the terms and ask an expert to call you back: the answer is in the document, not in the brochure.
