How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

Recommended vaccines and medicines11

Routine vaccinesCDC ↗

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include Chickenpox (Varicella) Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (DTaP, Tdap, or Td) Flu (influenza) Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) Polio Shingles

COVID-19CDC ↗

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines. Please see  Your COVID-19 Vaccination  for more information.

ChikungunyaCDC ↗

There is elevated chikungunya risk in Peru.  Chikungunya vaccination  may be considered for people traveling or moving to this location if they are planning to stay for an extended period of time (for example, 6 months or more).

Hepatitis ACDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Peru. Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series. Travelers allergic to a vaccine component should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.

Hepatitis BCDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers younger than 60 years old traveling to Peru. Unvaccinated travelers 60 years and older may get vaccinated before traveling to Peru.

MalariaCDC ↗

CDC recommends that travelers going to certain areas of Peru take prescription medicine to prevent malaria. Depending on the medicine you take, you will need to start taking this medicine multiple days before your trip, as well as during and after your trip. Talk to your doctor about which malaria medication you should take.

MeaslesCDC ↗

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

MonkeypoxCDC ↗

Monkeypox vaccination is recommended for any adult who anticipates any of the following activities during travel: Sexual or intimate contact with a new partner Sexual or intimate contact at a commercial sex venue, like a sex club or bathhouse Sexual or intimate contact in exchange for money, goods, drugs, or other trade Sexual or intimate contact in association with a large public event, such as a rave, party, or…

RabiesCDC ↗

Dogs infected with rabies are sometimes found in Peru. Rabies is also commonly found in some terrestrial wildlife species and bats. If rabies exposures occur while in Peru, rabies vaccines may only be available in larger suburban/urban medical facilities.

TyphoidCDC ↗

Consider getting a typhoid vaccine if you might: Travel to areas with poor sanitation and unsafe water, including rural areas Spend a long time in Peru, such as a month or more Visit friends or relatives Typhoid vaccine is not 100% effective. Practicing safe food and water habits , including washing hands at key times , can also help prevent typhoid fever .

Yellow FeverCDC ↗

CDC recommendations: Vaccine is recommended for all travelers ≥9 months old going to areas <2,300 m (7,550 ft) elevation in the regions of Amazonas, Cusco, Huánuco, Junín, Loreto, Madre de Dios, Pasco, Puno, San Martín, and Ucayali, and designated areas of Ancash (far northeast), Apurímac (far north), Ayacucho (north and northeast), Cajamarca (north and east), Huancavelica (far north), La Libertad (east), and Piura…

CDC Travelers' Health, re-read weekly — the recommendation depends on your age, vaccines and itinerary: confirm it with a doctor or a travel clinic 4 to 6 weeks before departure.CDC ↗read 10.10.2026

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult your doctor or an international vaccination centre at least eight weeks before departure to assess your health and receive vaccination recommendations. France Diplomatie
  • Ensure you are up to date with French routine vaccinations, particularly against diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis, pertussis and measles; your vaccination record may be required upon arrival. France Diplomatie
  • Carry only necessary medications in original packaging with original labels, accompanied by a prescription listing drugs by international non-proprietary name; verify authorisation in your destination country. France Diplomatie
  • Yellow fever vaccination is strongly recommended for the Amazon region and is mandatory to enter Venezuela from Peru; obtain it at an approved vaccination centre before departure. France Diplomatie
  • Protect yourself against mosquito bites by wearing long clothing, applying insect repellent to exposed skin, using impregnated mosquito nets, and eliminating standing water around your accommodation. France Diplomatie
  • At high altitude above 2,500 metres, ascend slowly at no more than 400 metres per night, stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, and descend immediately below 4,000 metres if symptoms of altitude sickness occur. France Diplomatie

  • Fièvre jaune : pour l’Amazonie, le vaccin contre la fièvre jaune est vivement recommandé (à pratiquer avant le départ dans un centre de vaccination agréé). Il est obligatoire pour se rendre au Vénézuéla depuis le Pérou (un certificat de vaccination peut être exigé) ;
  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales ;
  • Chikungunya : en cas d’épidémie ou de séjour prolongé ;

  • Une adaptation progressive à l’altitude en limitant les efforts physiques les premiers jours ;
  • Une ascension lente et progressive (pas plus de 400 m de dénivelé positif entre deux nuits consécutives à partir de 2 500 m) ;
  • Une hydratation régulière en évitant les boissons alcoolisées et repas copieux ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Call 106 and ask for an ambulance.

Contact your insurance company quickly if you are referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

  • check the latest vaccine recommendations for Peru
  • see where to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

See what health risks you’ll face in Peru including:

  • Oropouche virus disease
  • yellow fever
  • malaria
  • Zika virus

Altitude sickness is a serious risk in parts of Peru, including Cusco, Puno, the Colca Canyon and Kuelap. Read more about altitude sickness on TravelHealthPro .

Diarrhoea caused by contaminated food or water is common and is potentially serious. See more about food and water hygiene .

Dengue outbreak

Peru is experiencing a major dengue outbreak following floods. See the ‘Outbreaks’ page of the TravelHealthPro Peru guide for more information.

Medication

The legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can be different in other countries. Many medications are available over the counter in Peru, but local prescriptions will be required for some.

Read best practice when travelling with medicines on TravelHealthPro .

Healthcare in Peru

Medical treatment is not easily available and can be more difficult to access outside of Lima. Make sure you have appropriate travel health insurance and accessible funds to cover the cost of any medical treatment abroad and repatriation.

If you need emergency medical assistance during your trip in Lima, dial one of the following numbers: +51 1 416 6767 (Lima - Alerta Med), or +51 1 467 4861 (Lima - Clave Medica) and ask for an ambulance. These services are private, so you will need to pay for them.

FCDO has a list of medical providers in Peru where some staff will speak English.

Travel and mental health

Read FCDO guidance on travel and mental health . There is also mental health guidance on TravelHealthPro .

Peru - Level 2: Exercise Increased CautionState Department ↗updated 03.09.2026 · read 13.10.2026

Updated 03.09.2026

Exercise increased caution in Peru due to risk of crime, unrest, kidnapping , and terrorism . Some areas have increased risk. Read the entire Travel Advisory.

  • U.S. government employees working in Peru need special authorization to travel to the Colombia-Peru border area in the Loreto Region due to safety risks.
  • U.S. government employees working in Peru need special authorization to travel to the Valley of the Apurímac, Ene, and Mantaro Rivers (VRAEM), due to safety risks.
  • U.S. government employees working in Peru need special authorization to travel to the VRAEM’s boundary cities of Abancay, Ayacucho, Huancavelica, and Huancayo due to safety risks.
  • Review our information on  Travel to High-Risk Areas .

Crime

Crime is common in Peru.

  • Petty theft, carjackings, muggings, assaults, and other violent crime often happen even in daylight hours and with many witnesses around.
  • Although rare, “express kidnappings,” where the victim is taken to a banking institution and forced to remove funds from their own accounts, may occur.
  • The risk of crime increases at night.
  • Criminal groups sometimes set up roadblocks to rob people in areas outside of Lima.

Unrest

Demonstrations occur regularly throughout the country. Public demonstrations can take place for political and economic issues.

  • Demonstrations can shut down local roads, trains, and major highways. This often happens without warning or clear information on reopening times.
  • Road closures can limit access to public transportation and airports.
  • Closures may also disrupt travel in and between cities.

Restrictions for U.S. government employees

Due to road safety risks, U.S. government employees working in Peru are prohibited from nighttime driving. The only exception is within cities, between Lima and Huacho (to the north), and Lima and Paracas (to the south).

  • U.S. government employees working in Peru may travel at night with commercial bus companies along the Pan-American Highway, to Huaraz, and on the Lima-Arequipa-Cusco corridor.

Terrorism

There is risk of terrorist violence, including terrorist attacks and other activity in Peru. Visit the U.S. Department of State's Country Reports on Terrorism to learn more.

Kidnapping

Kidnapping in Peru, which could lead to prolonged detentions for ransom, are relatively uncommon but remains a notable security concern.  Visitors should…

  • le centre du pays , connu sous l’acronyme VRAEM (Vallée des Rivières Apurímac, Ene y Mantaro), région sous contrôle militaire ;

Regional risks — Foreign Office

This section has safety advice for regions of Peru. It only covers regions where the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office ( FCDO ) has specific advice.

You should also read FCDO ’s overall travel advice and safety and security advice .

Peru-Colombia border

FCDO advises against all but essential travel to areas within 20km south of the Putumayo River and the border between Peru and Colombia (Loreto region) except for:

  • the Amazon River
  • the area of the triple border with Brazil and Colombia from and including the towns of Caballococha in Peru up to the actual triple border at Santa Rosa de Yavari town

This is due to a high level of violence from organised criminal gangs who produce and traffic illegal drugs.

Putumayo River

The advice against all but essential travel applies to the Peruvian side of the Putumayo riverbank, though not on the river itself. If you are planning to leave a boat on the Colombian side of the river, check Colombia travel advice .

The Putumayo River forms most of Peru’s border with Colombia. The area is known for intensive cocaine and marijuana production. Drug trafficking and other violent organised crime takes place on and around the river.

Valley of the Apurímac, Ene and Mantaro rivers ( VRAEM )

FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the Valley of the Apurímac, Ene and Mantaro Rivers, also known as the VRAEM region.

Remnants of the Shining Path guerrilla group occasionally attack the police, military forces and local authorities in this area. They do not usually target tourists. However, you could be a victim of violence due to mistaken identity or by getting caught up in a security incident involving others.

There is little assistance available in this area from the Peruvian authorities, and any British Embassy assistance is severely limited.

Note that some parts of the Apurimac River in the Departments of Cusco and Arequipa are not within the VRAEM .

Amazon River

Armed criminals operate along the Amazon River and have targeted solo travellers and foreign nationals. These include:

  • thieves, known locally as ‘river pirates’
  • organised criminal gangs, who transport and smuggle illegal drugs

Travel with a reputable commercial or travel company if you are visiting the Amazon River. Stay on your boat where it passes through areas where FCDO advises against all but essential travel.

There is little assistance available in this area from the Peruvian authorities, and any British Embassy assistance is severely limited.

States of emergency

States of emergency have been declared in some parts of Peru. You can read a list of the areas with a state of emergency in El Peruano official newspaper (in Spanish). For more information on your destination, contact the iPeru information service .

In these areas you may notice an increased security presence. You should:

  • comply with the instructions of local authorities
  • avoid crowds
  • monitor the situation closely
Peru-Ecuador border

The Peruvian government has taken preventive measures in northern Peru in response to the security situation in Ecuador. You may notice an increased security presence.

If you are travelling to northern Peru or plan to cross land border checkpoints, ensure you follow the advice of local authorities.

If you wish to enter Ecuador by crossing a land border from Peru, you must show the Ecuadorean authorities certain documents. See Ecuador travel advice .

Only cross the Peru-Ecuador land border at official checkpoints. Other parts of the border may still have unexploded landmines. Some tourists have been robbed by fake taxi drivers. Be extremely vigilant in these areas.

There is little assistance available in this area from the Peruvian authorities, and any British Embassy assistance is severely limited.

Inca trail

Only basic medical services are available at Machu Picchu. Several climbers have died or suffered serious injuries after falling while climbing Huayna Picchu, a peak near Machu Picchu.

You should:

  • always register when entering national parks
  • be particularly careful in steep and slippery areas, or those that are unfenced or unmarked

The ‘Inca Jungle Trail’ can be difficult for vehicles due to poor road conditions. There have been fatal road accidents.

Lake Titicaca

Armed robbers have attacked travellers walking on their own. You should:

  • always take care
  • contact the local tourist information centre for advice about known safe zones
  • travel with a group at the southern end of Lake Titicaca if walking at night
Nazca Lines

If you are planning to fly over the Nazca Lines, check the airline company is licensed and has a good safety record before you book. There have been several fatal accidents in recent years.

You can ask the iPeru information service for advice about booking flights.

Safety — Foreign Office

This guide also has safety advice for regions of Peru .

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Peru

Terrorist attacks in Peru cannot be ruled out.

Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreign nationals. Stay aware of your surroundings, keep up to date with local media reports and follow the advice of local authorities.

Political situation

Political protests in Peru are unpredictable and can escalate quickly. Demonstrations can become violent and lead to roadblocks, travel disruption, including trains, and suspension of immigration services at land borders. This is often without notice or notification of estimated re-opening timelines.

Local groups can announce strike action, with little or no notice, particularly in areas connected to mining. These may quickly spill over from one region to another.

It’s illegal for foreigners in Peru to participate in political activities, including demonstrations against the government. You may face detention or deportation if you take part in a demonstration. To reduce any risk:

  • avoid large gatherings and protests
  • stay in a safe place
  • follow the instructions of army or police officers
  • take the advice of local authorities or tour operators
  • monitor local media, including social media channels
  • be wary of unverified, unofficial information
  • make sure you travel with enough food, water, local currency and personal medication
  • allow extra time to reach your destination

Protests in Lima often happen in the historic centre, where access can be restricted, but they can also spread to other areas. Other regions that have seen recent protests include Arequipa, Ayacucho, Cusco, La Libertad, Madre de Dios and Puno.

Some train services in the south, including those to and from Machu Picchu, are occasionally suspended or disrupted because of protests. Contact your travel provider for further advice on disruptions, and check if changes need to be made to your journey.

Contact the iPeru information service for help with issues travelling to different regions of Peru.

The British Embassy’s ability to provide help will be very limited where protests or criminal activity disrupt travel or damage infrastructure.

Help from local authorities, including police and emergency services, will also be very limited, especially if airports, roads and railroads are affected.

Organised crime

There is a higher risk to your safety in areas where there is serious organised crime linked to drug production. This includes the border areas with Ecuador, Colombia and Brazil and the Valley of Apurímac, Ene and Mantaro rivers ( VRAEM ). Remnants of the Shining Path guerrilla group are still active in some of the main coca growing areas in central Peru (Alto Huallaga, Aguaytia and VRAEM river basins).

Street crime

Street crime, including muggings and thefts, is a significant problem in Lima, Cusco, Arequipa and other major cities. Be alert in public places and when withdrawing cash from ATMs.

It is safer to use ATMs inside banks, supermarkets or large commercial buildings during business hours. Do not walk on your own in quiet areas or at night.

You must abide by local laws. Learn about what you should do and how we can help if you are arrested or detained abroad.

Drugs

Penalties for possession, use or trafficking of illegal drugs are severe. Convicted offenders can expect lengthy jail sentences and heavy fines. If you are arrested in Peru, you should expect lengthy delays to resolve your case, preventive detention of several months and significant related expenses.

  • Pack your own luggage and monitor it closely at all times
  • Never transport other people’s packages, bags or suitcases

Drugs, alcohol and travel

Identification

You must carry photo identification at all times. Keep a photocopy of your passport in a safe place, in case it's lost or confiscated. Failure to show identification could result in detention.

Behaviour

Peruvian authorities may impose fines and other penalties for any action considered to be disrespectful at historical and archaeological sites. To avoid offending local sensitivities:

  • behave discreetly
  • respect religious and social traditions
  • respect the established and published rules of the sites
  • check with your travel guide or agent for the latest information
Exports

Peruvian law strictly prohibits the export of:

  • antiques and artefacts from pre-colonial civilizations
  • coca products
  • protected species

Only purchase reproductions of colonial or pre-colonial art from reputable dealers and obtain documentation from Peru's National Institute of Culture. Prohibited exports – National Superintendence of Customs and Tax Administration (Spanish only)

Photography

It is forbidden to photograph military installations.

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. The convention applies between Canada and Peru. If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Peru, and if the applicable conditions are met, you may apply for the return of your child to the Peruvian court. If you are in this situation:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • contact the Central Authority for your province or territory of residence for information on starting an application under The Hague Convention
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Peru to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children's Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies. Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Driving

Police officers often request drivers to pull over and present their documents. Carry identification and vehicle registration at all times. As a tourist, you may use your Canadian driver's licence for the duration of your authorized stay. If a police officer stops you for violating traffic rules, you will receive a written document indicating the offence. Don’t pay the fine to the police directly but at a tax administration service, ‘Servicio de Administración Tributaria’, or any agency of ‘Banco de la Nación.’ If a police officer asks you to pay a percentage of the fine in cash, don’t pay it. Inform the police officer that you will pay the fine at the appropriate entity. You can check the fine online with your license plate number. Traffic regulation is different from Canada, the legal age to drive is 18.

Money

The currency of Peru is the Peruvian sol (PEN). The U.S. dollar is widely accepted. You must declare upon arrival and departure if you carry more than US$10,000 or equivalent in other currencies. Credit cards are not commonly accepted outside major cities. Many establishments will request to see a passport to confirm the identity of the person using the credit card. ATMs are not easily accessible in small towns and they often have limits on the amount and number of daily withdrawals.

Personal ID

Always carry ID with you. The Peruvian police may ask to see ID; if you do not have it with you, you may be required to go to the nearest police station.

Illegal drugs and prison sentences

Illegal drug use and drug trafficking in Peru carry lengthy jail sentences. Prison conditions in Peru are extremely poor and the British Embassy cannot intervene in police or judicial matters, or secure more favourable conditions. You should:

  • pack your luggage yourself and always keep it with you
  • not carry anything through customs for anyone
  • not take coca leaves or coca tea out of the country – it is illegal to import these items into the UK

Drug couriers have targeted British nationals with email scams. These criminals will try to get you to travel to Peru to pick up items containing drugs. You’ll face detention for drug trafficking if convicted.

Military photography

Do not take photographs of anything of a military nature, it is illegal and you could face a prison sentence of two to five years.

LGBT+ travellers

Same-sex sexual activity is legal in Peru, but social attitudes are generally conservative. Crimes against the LGBT+ community are not included in hate crime legislation and same-sex partnerships are not formally recognised. Same-sex couples showing affection in public may receive unwanted and negative attention. Read more advice for LGBT+ travellers.

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Peru’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Peru set and enforce entry rules. If you are not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Peruvian Consulate General in the UK (in Spanish).

Passport validity requirements

To enter Peru, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

You can travel to Peru without a visa for tourism or short visits. If you are travelling for any other reason, check requirements with the Peruvian Consulate General in the UK (in Spanish).

When you arrive in Peru, you will normally get permission to stay for up to 90 days in a 180 day period. The 180 day period is calculated from the date of your first entry into Peru. Immigration officials can grant you a maximum of 183 days in a 365 day period as a visitor or tourist.

If you overstay, you will get a fine and you could be detained.

Arriving at an international airport

If you arrive in Peru at an international airport, authorities will register your entry digitally through a Tarjeta Andina de Migración (TAM) - a virtual immigration control document.

You can check how long you are allowed to stay in Peru on the Superintendencia Nacional de Migraciones website (in Spanish).

Airport fee

From 7 December, passengers transiting or connecting through Lima (Jorge Chávez International) Airport will be required to pay a fee, known as a TUUA (Tarifa Unica por Uso de Aeropuerto, or Airport Use Fee).

This fee is not currently included in airline tickets.

To avoid delays, travellers are encouraged to pay in advance via the Lima Airport online platform or use available on-site payment options, including mobile POS (Point of Sale) agents, dedicated payment modules, and QR codes.

Arriving by land

Land entry: make sure you get your passport stamped.

If you enter Peru by land from a neighbouring country, get a passport entry stamp at the immigration checkpoint. You cannot leave Peru without one. If you did not get a stamp, apply to get a passport entry stamp online (form in Spanish) and:

  • give your passport details
  • give evidence of your entry to Peru, such as a bus ticket in your name
  • show an exit stamp from the last country you visited

The British Embassy can help you to apply for an entry stamp. You should start this process as soon as possible.

If you cannot give the information needed, you must apply for an exit order or expulsion order to leave Peru in person at the Immigration Office in Lima . These orders may stop you from re-entering Peru for a number of years. The British Embassy…

FDFA (Switzerland) — transport and specific advice, in French

Transport and infrastructure

The health system — With 1.7 physicians per 1,000 people (62% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover. What are the entry requirements for Peru with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): French nationals need no visa for tourist stays under 90 days in Peru, but passport must be valid for at least six months from arrival or entry will be refused and return flight costs charged to traveller. Tourist stays cannot exceed 90 days within 183 days; overstaying incurs a fine of 4.40 Soles per day of excess and irregular status. Land border crossings require mandatory physical passport stamps; failure to obtain them risks three-week administrative detention followed by expulsion with re-entry ban up to 15 years.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date in Peru. British citizens may visit Peru visa-free for tourism or short stays, receiving up to ninety days permission within any one hundred eighty day period. Overstaying in Peru results in fines and possible detention; immigration officials may grant a maximum of one hundred eighty-three days in a three hundred sixty-five day period.

From 14 000 € to 200 000 € depending on severity and distance (Holafly, 2026).

  • Without cover: the hospital asks for a deposit before admission, and the medical flight is paid up front.
  • With the VIP Pack: the evacuation is decided and settled by Maximum (art. 6.2.2) — no advance, no cap.

What should I do if hospitalised in Peru?

Six steps, in this order.

  • 1. Call +41 22 ••• •• •• before paying anything, or have the front desk call: it is the condition for full cover (otherwise: reduced or refused benefits).
  • 2. Ask for a hospital in the Maximum network (art. 6.9).
  • 3. See a doctor the same day and leave with the certificate: without an on-the-spot finding, nothing is covered (art. 33).
  • 4. Admitted for more than 24 h? The front desk calls Maximum: direct payment guarantee, no deposit (art. 2.12).
  • 5. Book no ambulance or flight yourself (art. 6.2.2).
  • 6. Once home, file within 30 days (art. 35.7).
  • Local emergency services: single number 911 / 111 · police 105 · ambulance 106 / 117 · fire 116.

Is an Amex, Visa or Mastercard enough in Peru?

At today's level 2/4, card by card:

  • Amex Platinum — No area exclusion at this level — but three written limits: deductible and prior approval, 90-day cap, advance under conditions.
  • Visa — No express area exclusion — but a €156,000 cap, 90 days, and the war/instability exclusion in the background.
  • Mastercard — No exclusion in play at this level — but a €155,000 cap and 90 covered days.
  • Three lines to read in your notice: the duration (often 90 days per trip), the settlement (reimbursement afterwards or direct payment of the hospital) and the area exclusion at level 4/4.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Peru?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — No area exclusion at this level — compare cap, deductible and covered duration.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.
  • Have your IPID number or the PDF of the terms and ask an expert to call you back: the answer is in the document, not in the brochure.

How do I use the medical network on this page?

The page reads hospitals, pharmacies and doctors from OpenStreetMap, around the point you choose.

  • Type your city, hotel or beach: the map re-centres, 24/7 emergency rooms come first.
  • Each row gives the phone when the source publishes it, the nearest street, directions and the Google Maps listing.
  • The PDF briefing repeats the same places, numbered on a printable map.
  • No customer reviews: OpenStreetMap has none, and we invent none.

  • France Diplomatie reports in the country: dengue, malaria, chikungunya — mosquito protection day and night.

  • Carry your medicines in their packaging, with a prescription using international non-proprietary names (France Diplomatie).

Can I be treated in Peru, or will I be evacuated?

1.7 physicians per 1,000 people (2023) versus 4.5 in Switzerland.

  • 1.6 hospital beds per 1,000 people versus 4.4 in Switzerland (World Bank).
  • With 1.7 physicians per 1,000 people (62% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover. Health spending of 446 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.
  • When the local facility is not enough, Maximum's medical team decides the evacuation to a suitable centre, and pays for it (art. 6.2.2).

Peru: safety, in figures?

8.6 homicides per 100,000 people (2021) versus 0.6 in Switzerland and 1.3 in France.

  • 13.6 road deaths per 100,000 people versus 2.2 in Switzerland (World Bank, WHO).
  • The homicide rate is 14 times Switzerland's: violence is a real risk there, concentrated in the areas named by the official advisories. On the road, 6 times more deaths than in Switzerland: road crashes are the leading cause of death of healthy travellers (CDC) — seat belt, no night driving, a driver or a taxi from a rank.

Which laws and customs should I know in Peru?

Travelling to Lima: what changes

The published advisory level is national, but risk is not: business hubs (Lima) do not share the profile of border areas. The medical network shown on this page is computed around Lima — real hospitals, evacuation airport and live alerts. Before a specific trip, always cross-check your country of residence's advisory: that is what your policy cites.

Same advisory level: Netherlands · Philippines · United Kingdom · Dominican Republic · Saint Lucia · Serbia
