How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Sierra Leone. Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series. Travelers allergic to a vaccine component should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.

Hepatitis BCDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers of all ages traveling to Sierra Leone.

MalariaCDC ↗

CDC recommends that travelers going to Sierra Leone take prescription medicine to prevent malaria. Depending on the medicine you take, you will need to start taking this medicine multiple days before your trip, as well as during and after your trip. Talk to your doctor about which malaria medication you should take. Transmission areas All Drug resistance 1 Chloroquine Species P. falciparum (primarily) P.

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult your doctor or an international vaccination centre before departure to assess your health and receive vaccination recommendations, including for yellow fever, which is mandatory for entry to Sierra Leone. France Diplomatie
  • Carry all medications in original packaging with labels showing the international non-proprietary name, accompanied by a medical prescription; verify that your medications are authorised in Sierra Leone. France Diplomatie
  • Drink only boiled or bottled water and avoid ice in drinks; water-borne diseases including cholera are endemic in Sierra Leone, particularly during the rainy season in areas with poor sanitation. Foreign Office
  • Call 117 for ambulance services, but note that ambulances are unreliable in Freetown and unavailable in most of the country; you may need to arrange private transport to the nearest major hospital. Foreign Office

  • Fièvre jaune : la fièvre jaune étant endémique en Sierra Leone, la vaccination constitue une condition d’entrée sur le territoire. Il est recommandé de se faire vacciner dans un centre agréé avant le départ ;
  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Tuberculose : chez les enfants de moins de 15 ans en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales ;
  • Chikungunya : en cas d’épidémie ou de séjour prolongé ;
  • Dengue : en cas d’épidémie active ou de séjour prolongé en zone endémique ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Health — Foreign Office

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Call 117 and ask for an ambulance.

Ambulance services are unreliable in Freetown and unavailable throughout most of the country. Staff are not usually trained paramedics and often have little or no medical equipment.

Some private hospitals, particularly in Freetown, operate their own commercial ambulances. Injured or seriously ill travellers may need to take a taxi or private vehicle to the nearest major hospital rather than wait for an ambulance.

Contact your insurance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

  • check the latest vaccine recommendations for Sierra Leone
  • see where to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

See what health risks you’ll face in Sierra Leone , including:

  • yellow fever
  • cholera
  • malaria
  • rabies

Water-borne diseases, including cholera, are endemic in Sierra Leone with outbreaks, particularly during the rainy season, in areas where there is poor sanitation. You should drink or use only boiled or bottled water and avoid ice in drinks.

As of 2023, UNAIDS estimate that around 77,000 people in Sierra Leone were living with HIV. You should take normal precautions to avoid exposure to HIV/AIDS.

If you are in Sierra Leone for business, check what medical support your employer can provide if you fall ill.

Medication

Check with the  Federal Office of Public Health that your medication is legal in Sierra Leone.

The legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can be different in other countries.

Read best practice when travelling with medicines on TravelHealthPro .

Healthcare in Sierra Leone

FCDO has a list of medical providers in Sierra Leone .

Hospitals, medical facilities and services in Sierra Leone are severely limited. The standard of care is much lower than in the UK, including basic services such as blood screening. Many facilities, particularly outside of Freetown, only accept cash payments.

Medical supplies are unreliable and limited. Carry basic medical supplies and adequate supplies of prescription medication. Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription.

Make sure you have adequate travel health insurance and accessible funds to cover the cost of any medical treatment abroad, medical evacuation and repatriation.

Updated 14.09.2025

Exercise increased caution in Sierra Leone due to crime , unrest , and inadequate health infrastructure .

Crime

  • Violent crimes, such as robbery and assault, occur frequently in Sierra Leone, especially in Freetown. Police struggle to respond to serious crime in most places due to limited resources.
  • Do not travel outside the Freetown peninsula after nightfall. There are increased safety hazards and security concerns at night. U.S. government employees in Sierra Leone are prohibited from travel outside the capital after dark. The U.S. Embassy in Freetown cannot offer emergency services outside Freetown at night.
  • Review our information on Crime Abroad and for Victims of Crime .

Unrest

  • Demonstrations and protests occur in Sierra Leone and occasionally result in violence. Protests can happen with little to no warning. They often develop around political issues, large events, or holidays.

In brief
  • French nationals in Sierra Leone are advised to verify insurance coverage terms and ensure sufficient financial means for potential hospitalisation or evacuation costs, as the French embassy is located in Conakry, Guinea. France Diplomatie
  • Avoid the border zone with Liberia due to ongoing instability; the rest of the country is under enhanced vigilance. Avoid political gatherings and riots, which may occur due to rising cost of living. France Diplomatie
  • Avoid motorcycle taxis, tricycle taxis (kéké) and collective transport vehicles due to high accident risk. Do not drive at night outside the peninsula; roads lack lighting and vehicles often travel without headlights. France Diplomatie
  • Do not engage in gold, diamond or precious material transactions without consulting the consulate first; local legislation is strict, intermediaries are often fraudulent and investments are typically lost. France Diplomatie
  • Heavy rainfall from May to November causes flooding and landslides. Arrange a four-wheel-drive vehicle with an experienced driver for rainy season travel. Check weather conditions before any journey. France Diplomatie

  • suivez strictement les instructions des autorités et les conseils de vos personnes de contact sur place;
  • renoncez aux promenades nocturnes, que ce soit dans les villes ou sur les plages;

  • une personne, invoquant une situation d’urgence médicale ou autre (agression à main armée, placement en détention, problèmes avec les autorités, problème de visa, etc.) vous demande de lui transférer de l’argent au plus vite;
  • la demande vous est adressée de communiquer vos coordonnées bancaires au motif d’un héritage ou d’un transfert d’argent à votre profit;
  • vous recevez des offres promettant un gain d’argent important;

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Sierra Leone

Although there’s no recent history of terrorism in Sierra Leone, attacks cannot be ruled out.

Political situation

Following the end of the civil war in 2002, the political situation in Sierra Leone has improved. However, the political situation can change and protests can turn violent. Avoid any political gatherings or demonstrations and follow any curfews or restrictions. Remain vigilant as the security situation could change quickly.

Crime

In a small number of incidents, British nationals have been robbed, sometimes at knifepoint. Robberies have taken place in Congo Cross, Wilkinson Road, Lumley Beach, Aberdeen and at beach resorts along the Freetown peninsula and surrounding islands. Crime rates in Sierra Leone are comparatively low, however incidents of violent and organised crime are rising. Exercise vigilance and avoid walking alone at night.

The greatest risk to short-stay visitors is from pickpocketing and mugging in Freetown. If you’re staying for a longer period, make sure you secure your property and employ guards.

To reduce your personal risk:

  • avoid crowds and political demonstrations
  • do not display or carry expensive items or large sums of money
  • avoid walking alone after dark
  • familiarise yourself with your surroundings and stay alert
  • arrange your transport in advance
  • check your hotel safe is secure

Public transport drivers and passengers have robbed foreign visitors. Avoid travelling in taxis, minibuses (‘poda-podas’), motorised rickshaws (‘kekes’) or motorbikes (‘ocadas’).

Reporting crime

The Sierra Leone Police charge foreign nationals a fee for police reports. They will not issue a crime reference number, which is needed for most insurance claims, without a police report. Do not pay the police directly. Make your payment to the Sierra Leone Police Revenue Generation Fund account at the Bank of Sierra Leone and get a receipt.

There is no charge if you want to report a crime and do not need a crime reference number.

Laws and cultural differences

Sierra Leone has a tolerant, multi-religion culture. Always respect local traditions, customs, laws and religions and make sure your actions do not cause offence.

Personal ID

Always carry ID such as a passport or residence permit. The police will usually accept a copy of your passport’s photo page and visa stamp.

Illegal drugs and prison sentences

Do not become involved with drugs of any kind. There are heavy penalties for drug trafficking, including prison sentences. Prison conditions are harsh.

Diamond smuggling

There are heavy penalties for diamond smuggling, including prison sentences.

Land ownership disputes

Land registry records are sometimes disputed and can lead to land disputes, where more than one person claims rights to the same land. Disputes can lead to threats of violence. If you are concerned about land ownership, seek independent legal advice and contact the Anti-Land Grabbing Unit of the Sierra Leone Police. The British High Commission cannot intervene with disputes or investigate ownership claims.

Precious minerals

Mineral import and export of gold, diamonds and other precious natural resources are subject to strict regulations. International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. It does not apply between Canada and Sierra Leone. If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Sierra Leone by an abducting parent:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Sierra Leone to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies. Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Sierra Leone’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Sierra Leone set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Sierra Leone High Commission in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

To enter Sierra Leone, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date of your visa application.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

You must have a visa to enter Sierra Leone.

Applying for a visa

You can get a visa to visit or for business travel either:

  • when you arrive in Sierra Leone for 80 US dollars, paid in cash in US dollars
  • before you travel – apply online for an e-visa

Single entry visas are valid for 90 days from date of issuing for visits up to a maximum of 30 days.

Multiple entry visas are valid for 365 days from date of issuing and are valid for multiple separate trips for up to a maximum of 30 days for each visit.

If you’re travelling for a purpose other than a visit or business, you must get a visa before you travel. Contact the Sierra Leone High Commission in the UK .

Vaccine requirements

To enter Sierra Leone, you must have a certificate to prove you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination.

For more details about medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, see TravelHealthPro’s Sierra Leone guide .

Health travel declaration

All travellers entering or leaving Sierra Leone must complete a health declaration before travel using the Sierra Leone Health Travel Portal.

You must:

  • complete the form online within 72 hours before travel
  • ensure your travel details are accurate, including your seat number where possible
  • keep your confirmation QR code or reference number and present it if requested

You may be required to undergo health screening on arrival.

If you do not comply, you may face delays or be refused entry or departure.

Ebola Screening

As a public health measure, Sierra Leone has introduced screening for arriving travellers. You should expect enhanced health screening measures on arrival.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has  declared this a Public Health Emergency of International Concern .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Sierra Leone .

You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Export of precious stones

You must have an export licence to leave Sierra Leone with precious stones. Check the quality of any gems or minerals you buy. Any deals that appear too good to be true probably are.

For each risk, the official texts themselves: what is happening, then, where they say so, what to do.

CrimeMODERATE

What the texts say · Violent crimes, such as robbery and assault, occur frequently in Sierra Leone, especially in Freetown.

What they advise:
  • Don't resist an attack.
  • Avoid walking alone after dark.
  • Arrange your transport in advance.
State Department · Global Affairs Canada · Foreign Office
TransportMODERATE

What the texts say · Public transport drivers and passengers have robbed foreign visitors. Serious traffic accidents are common and road travel across the country comes with risks, including: poor standards of vehicle maintenance - people driving erratically, particularly motorbike riders, and ignoring road regulations - roads with little or no lighting - vehicles with no lights, and pedestrians and animals on the road - damage to roads during the rainy season - high traffic levels, increasing the risk of collisions.

What they advise:
  • Avoid travelling in taxis, minibuses (‘poda-podas’), motorised rickshaws (‘kekes’) or motorbikes (‘ocadas’).
  • Travel with your doors locked.
  • Try to complete your travel during daylight hours as risks are higher at night.
Foreign Office
Nature and climateMODERATE

What the texts say · The rainy season extends from May to November. Seasonal flooding can hamper overland travel and reduce the provision of essential services.

What they advise:
  • Stay away from flooded areas.
  • Follow instructions from local authorities, including evacuation orders.
Global Affairs Canada
Laws and customsTO KNOW

What the texts say · The Sierra Leone Police charge foreign nationals a fee for police reports. Same-sex relations between men are illegal in Sierra Leone, even if they are consensual.

What they advise:
  • Do not take pictures of military installations or any other official government buildings, including prisons and courthouses.
  • Do not become involved with drugs of any kind.
  • Make your payment to the Sierra Leone Police Revenue Generation Fund account at the Bank of Sierra Leone and get a receipt.
Foreign Office
Cyber and dataMODERATE

What the texts say · Cybercrime and online extortion can occur in Sierra Leone. Cybercriminals can compromise public Wi-Fi networks to steal personal data or credit information.

What they advise:
  • Use secure public Wi-Fi networks.
  • Be cautious when posting information or photos on social media.
Global Affairs Canada
Crowds and calendarMODERATE

What the texts say · Demonstrations occur occasionally. Even peaceful demonstrations can turn violent at any time.

What they advise: Avoid areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place.

FDFA (Switzerland) — transport and specific advice, in French

Transport and infrastructure

What are the entry requirements for Sierra Leone with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): French nationals require a visa to enter Sierra Leone. Apply online via Sierra Leone's immigration website before departure, though visas on arrival remain available at Freetown airport. Do not import more than 10,000 USD in cash into Sierra Leone; amounts exceeding this are prohibited. Only professionals holding a special licence from the Ministry of Mineral Resources may export diamonds from Sierra Leone.

Which laws and customs should I know in Sierra Leone?

Local laws apply to every traveller; here is what the official texts say.

  • You must carry an international driving permit and your identification and vehicle documents when driving in Sierra Leone.
  • Photography of military installations, government buildings, airports, and bridges is strictly prohibited and enforced.
  • Penalties for drug possession, use, or trafficking are severe, including jail sentences and heavy fines; prison conditions are harsh.
