How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult a doctor or international vaccination center at least 8 weeks before travel for health assessments and vaccination advice, especially for high-altitude excursions.
  • Carry necessary personal medications in their original packaging with an international common name prescription, and verify their legality in the destination country.
  • Ensure your travel insurance covers mountain search and evacuation costs, as helicopter rescue services in Nepal require payment guarantees.
  • Check the latest vaccine recommendations for your destination and ensure your routine vaccinations, such as diphtheria, tetanus, and polio, are up to date.
  • Medical treatment outside major cities can be poor, and hospitals may require upfront payment or financial guarantees before commencing treatment.
  • Be aware of mosquito-borne illnesses like Chikungunya and Dengue, and take precautions such as wearing long clothing and using insect repellent.

  • La mise à jour de la vaccination diphtérie-tétanos-poliomyélite (DTP) est obligatoire pour les voyageurs venant d’Afghanistan, du Kenya, du Nigéria, du Pakistan, de Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée ou de Somalie ;
  • Fièvre jaune : o bligatoire pour les voyageurs en provenance de zones d’endémie ;
  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Tuberculose : chez les enfants de moins de 15 ans en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales ;
  • Chikungunya : en cas d’épidémie ou de séjour prolongé ;
  • Dengue : en cas d’épidémie active ou de séjour prolongé en zone endémique ;

  • Une adaptation progressive à l’altitude en limitant les efforts physiques les premiers jours ;
  • Une ascension lente et progressive (pas plus de 400 m de dénivelé positif entre deux nuits consécutives à partir de 2 500 m) ;
  • Une hydratation régulière en évitant les boissons alcoolisées et repas copieux ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Health — Foreign Office

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

There is no central public ambulance service. Some private providers operate in the main cities. In an emergency, call the nearest hospital. FCDO has a list of some of the hospitals in Kathmandu and Pokhara .

Contact your insurance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

  • check the latest vaccine recommendations for Nepal
  • see where to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

See what health risks you’ll face in Nepal, including:

  • dengue
  • air pollution

Altitude sickness is a risk in parts of Nepal, particularly in tourist and trekking areas. Read more about altitude sickness on TravelHealthPro .

Medication

The legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can be different in other countries.

Read best practice when travelling with medicines on TravelHealthPro .

Healthcare in Nepal

Medical treatment is expensive at western travellers’ clinics in Nepal. Healthcare is poor in most places outside the Kathmandu Valley and Pokhara. It may be difficult to get rapid helicopter evacuation if you fall ill or suffer a serious accident in a remote area of the country. Make sure you have adequate travel health insurance and accessible funds to cover the cost of any medical treatment abroad, repatriation and evacuation by helicopter. This usually costs between £1,000 and £2,000 or more per flying hour.

FCDO has a list of medical providers in Kathmandu and Pokhara where some staff will speak English.

Flash flood in the Rasuwa district and the Nepal-China border area On 26 August 2026, major flooding in Rasuwa district and the Nepal-China border area caused widespread damage. Buildings, roads, other transport and communications infrastructure have been severely damaged. Other areas in Nepal, including Gorkha, Nuwakot and Dhading, have also been affected. The Nepalese authorities and emergency services are responding. The authorities have warned of the risk of further flooding. Areas affected by flooding and landslides may remain unstable. Further heavy rainfall or an earthquake could trigger additional landslides, rockfalls and other hazards, particularly in mountainous areas. The situation may change rapidly. If you are travelling in the region, follow the advice of the Nepalese government and local authorities, be alert to the changing situation and monitor local media for updates. The Nepalese government has established a toll-free emergency Nepalese language number, 1234, and a dedicated hotline 1144 accessible in Nepal. Nepal - Level 2: Exercise Increased CautionState Department ↗updated 03.09.2026 · read 13.10.2026

Updated 03.09.2026

Exercise increased caution in Nepal due to natural disasters . Some areas have increased risk. Read the entire Travel Advisory.

Nepal regularly experiences earthquakes, floods, and landslides. Earthquakes can happen suddenly with little warning, including in the Kathmandu Valley.

During the monsoon season from June to September, heavy rain can cause flash floods and landslides. These can block roads, damage buildings, and make it hard to get help in an emergency.

Review our information on Weather and Natural Disasters in Nepal.

Emergency services

Medical services have limited ability to handle regular and emergency care. Review the Health section of the Travel Guidance on this page for more information.

Hospitals in Kathmandu are usually better than in other areas, but they can be crowded, may lack some equipment or medicines, and often ask that you pay before treatment. Medical treatment of foreigners is not paid for by the Government of Nepal.

Bring the medicines you need, get travel health insurance that covers medical evacuation, and understand you might need to go to another country for serious treatment.

Do not travel to:

  • The Rasuwagadhi-Timure-Syafrubesi area of Rasuwa district, including the Nepal-China border crossing , for any reason due to flood damage, disrupted transportation and communications, search-and-rescue and recovery operations, and the risk of additional flooding and landslides.

  • consultant la fiche Séismes et le site de l’ambassade de France au Népal ;
  • s’inscrivant sur le fil d’Ariane du site France Diplomatie ;

  • Consulter les recommandations de sécurité du site de ambassade de France à Katmandou ;
  • Garder toujours sur soi une copie du passeport et du visa ;
  • Rester en contact régulier avec ses proches ;

  • joignez-vous de préférence à un groupe pour vos excursions et faites-vous accompagner de guides fiables ayant une expertise des lieux;
Natural hazards

Flash flood in the Rasuwa district and the Nepal-China border area

On 26 August 2026, major flooding in Rasuwa district and the Nepal-China border area caused widespread damage.

Consular assistance remains available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for anyone affected who requires support from the UK Government.

If you are affected and need assistance from the UK Government call:

  • from Nepal +977 (0)14237100

Global travel impacts due to escalation in the Middle East

Escalation in the Middle East has caused widespread travel disruption, including airspace closures, delayed and cancelled flights.

Your travel plans may be affected, even if your destination is not in the Middle East. Before you travel:

  • check travel advice for any countries or territories you are transiting through
  • check for the latest updates from your airline or tour operator
  • review your travel insurance policy for coverage
  • monitor local and international media for the latest information and sign up for travel advice email alerts

If your visa has expired as a result of travel disruption, the Nepal Immigration Department have indicated that affected foreign nationals will receive a visa extension without cost until flights are rescheduled. This should be arranged at the airport.

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Nepal

Although there’s no recent history of terrorism in Nepal, attacks cannot be ruled out.

Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreign nationals. Be vigilant in public places and take local advice.

Civil disorder

Political protests, demonstrations and strikes are fairly common in Nepal.

These can start at short notice and may lead to violent clashes between protesters and law enforcement. Protests cause disruption to transport and the authorities may increase the police presence or impose a curfew.

You should:

  • avoid any demonstrations
  • check local media for updates
  • follow the direction of local authorities
Crime

There’s a low rate of serious crime in Nepal but take precautions.

Protecting yourself and your belongings

Watch out for pickpockets and bag-snatchers, particularly in airports, on buses and in areas popular with foreign nationals like Thamel, Sanepa and Kupondol in Kathmandu.

Take care when walking around at night. Assaults and robberies are more likely in the evening in poorly lit areas. Avoid walking on your own and do not carry large sums of cash. Keep valuables in a hotel safe if possible.

Sexual assault

Women have been sexually assaulted in tourist areas such as Thamel and Sanepa in Kathmandu. Be cautious, especially when alone after dark. See Advice for women travelling abroad .

Drink spiking

Be wary of accepting drinks from strangers and do not leave drinks unattended.

Methanol poisoning

There has been an increase in cases of serious illness caused by alcoholic drinks containing methanol in popular travel destinations around the world.

Even small amounts of methanol can kill. It is not possible to identify methanol in alcoholic drinks by taste or smell. See Travel Aware Drink Spiking and Methanol Poisoning for information about how to reduce the risks.

Seek urgent medical attention if you or someone you are travelling with show the signs of methanol poisoning after drinking.

Scams

There have been isolated reports of some trekking guides taking inexperienced trekkers to high altitudes too quickly, and then calling in expensive helicopter medivacs from which the guides take a cut. Be wary of trekking deals that look very cheap and may be scams.

Personal ID

You should carry your passport with you. Leave a copy in a safe place or with friends and family in the UK.

Visiting holy places

Avoid wearing shorts and sleeveless tops in temples and other holy places. Remove shoes before entering certain holy places. Non-Hindus are not permitted inside certain parts of Hindu temples.

Illegal drugs and prison sentences

Penalties for drugs related offences are severe. If you are caught with even small amounts of marijuana, you can go to prison for over 5 years, usually after a long and expensive legal process.

Some skincare products and e-cigarette refills may contain ingredients that are illegal in Nepal such as cannabidiol ( CBD ). If the police find you with products containing CBD , they may seize them and charge you with drug possession.

Advisory summary

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK Government’s understanding of Nepal’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Nepal set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Nepal Embassy in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

To avoid problems at immigration, make sure your passport has an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after your date of entry into Nepal.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Checks at border control

At border control, you may need to show:

  • a travel insurance document which has cover for healthcare costs including repatriation and other emergencies while you are in Nepal
  • confirmation of where you will spend your first night, for example, a hotel booking
Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

You must have a visa to visit Nepal for up to 90 days.

Applying for a visa

You can apply online for a visa on arrival up to 15 days in advance of your arrival. Using your submission receipt, you then collect and pay for your visa at the airport. You can also apply using the forms or terminals available at the airport, then queue up to get the visa . You can pay by card, but you should have cash as a back-up, with US dollars being the preferred currency.

Alternatively you can apply for a tourist visa in advance and collect it from the Nepal Embassy in the UK or in another country. Applying in advance can reduce the time it takes to pass through immigration.

Visas are available for several lengths of stay at various costs. Look on the immigration department website for the options .

You can extend your visa online to up to a total of 150 days in one year.

Overstaying your visa in Nepal is a serious crime and can lead to significant fines or imprisonment.

Vaccine requirements

To enter Nepal, you must have a certificate to prove you’ve had:

  • a yellow fever vaccination if you’re coming from a country listed as a transmission risk
  • a polio vaccine, if you’re coming from certain countries with a transmission risk

For full details about medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, see TravelHealthPro’s Nepal guide .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Nepal. You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Bringing precious metals into Nepal is strictly regulated. You can carry gold ornaments up to 50 grams and silver ornaments up to 100 grams. If you bring in undeclared gold or silver, you may:

  • get a fine equivalent to the value of the goods
  • go to prison for between one month and 5 years depending upon the value of the goods
  • have the goods confiscated
  • be detained during the proceedings

FDFA (Switzerland) — transport and specific advice, in French

Transport and infrastructure

The health system — With 1.0 physicians per 1,000 people (78% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover. Health spending of 84 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.

  • Is the whole country advised against? United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no (reading of 27 September 2026).
  • Contractually, only an FDFA, FOPH or WHO advisory against the trip opens Module A (art. 18.1) — that is not the case today.
  • International medical cover, 24/7 number saved, and a read of the areas named under Safety & risks before booking the itinerary.

Is the whole of Nepal advised against, or only some areas?

An area advised against does not rule out the country.

  • Official answers: United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no.
  • Keep your country of residence's advisory on booking day and on departure day: that is what your policy's clauses cite.

What are the entry requirements for Nepal with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): French nationals should verify flight reservations due to partial closure of Kathmandu Tribhuvan International Airport for repairs. A visa is required for entry into Nepal and can be obtained in Paris, upon arrival, or at land borders. Travellers arriving in Nepal should carry 200 US dollars or the Euro equivalent in cash for visa payment.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British citizens must ensure their passport is valid for at least six months beyond their entry date into Nepal. Travellers may need to present travel insurance covering healthcare and repatriation, and confirmation of their first night's accommodation. A visa is required for Nepal, which can be obtained online up to 15 days before arrival for collection at the airport, or in advance from an embassy.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a Nepal visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (CHF 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Nepal?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.

  • 16.3 road deaths per 100,000 people versus 2.2 in Switzerland (World Bank, WHO).

Your policy — benefits, the six steps, claims, articles. The site — prices, certificate, subscription. Nothing else: what it does not know, it says so and hands you to an adviser.
