How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include Chickenpox (Varicella) Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (DTaP, Tdap, or Td) Flu (influenza) Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) Polio Shingles

COVID-19CDC ↗

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines. Please see  Your COVID-19 Vaccination  for more information.

Hepatitis ACDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Chile. Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series. Travelers allergic to a vaccine component should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.

Hepatitis BCDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers younger than 60 years old traveling to Chile. Unvaccinated travelers 60 years and older may get vaccinated before traveling to Chile.

MeaslesCDC ↗

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

MonkeypoxCDC ↗

Monkeypox vaccination is recommended for any adult who anticipates any of the following activities during travel: Sexual or intimate contact with a new partner Sexual or intimate contact at a commercial sex venue, like a sex club or bathhouse Sexual or intimate contact in exchange for money, goods, drugs, or other trade Sexual or intimate contact in association with a large public event, such as a rave, party, or…

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult a doctor or international vaccination center for health assessments and recommendations, including necessary vaccinations, at least eight weeks before travel.
  • Carry essential medications in their original packaging with an international common name prescription, and verify their legality in the destination country.
  • Ensure all routine French vaccinations are up-to-date, particularly for diphtheria, tetanus, polio, and pertussis, as a vaccination booklet may be requested upon arrival.
  • Take precautions against mosquito bites by wearing long clothing, using repellent, and protecting accommodation, as dengue fever is present on Easter Island.
  • Be aware of altitude sickness symptoms above 2,500 meters, and if they appear, stop ascending, descend immediately, and seek medical advice.
  • Medical facilities outside the capital may be limited, and hospitals often require payment guarantees before commencing treatment.

  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales ;
  • Chikungunya : en cas d’épidémie ou de séjour prolongé ;

  • Une adaptation progressive à l’altitude en limitant les efforts physiques les premiers jours ;
  • Une ascension lente et progressive (pas plus de 400 m de dénivelé positif entre deux nuits consécutives à partir de 2 500 m) ;
  • Une hydratation régulière en évitant les boissons alcoolisées et repas copieux ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

  • 1e région (Arica - Putre - General Lagos - Colchane - Pica - Pisagua) ;
  • 2e région (Calama - Ollague - San Pedro de Atacama - Sierra Gorda - Antofagasta - Chacabuco) ;
  • 5e région (Puchuncavi - Colliguay) ;
  • 12e région (Puerto Natales - Torres del Paine - Laguna Blanca - San Gregorio - Porvenir - Primavera - Timalcahuel - Isla Dawson).

In brief
  • Political and social tensions may lead to demonstrations, strikes, and roadblocks, particularly in Santiago and Valparaiso, potentially causing property damage and violence.
  • Border regions with Peru and Bolivia are partially mined; stay on frequented roads and heed warning signs, especially in Araucania and Bio Bio regions where criminal groups are active.
  • High crime rates, including armed robbery and kidnapping, are reported; avoid displaying valuables and never resist attackers, as they may resort to homicide.
  • Road conditions vary, and speeding is common; carry provisions for desert crossings and be aware of potential power outages and unreliable mobile service in remote areas.
  • Chile is prone to earthquakes, volcanic activity, and tsunamis; follow local authority instructions and heed weather warnings, especially during outdoor activities.
  • Report planned excursions in national parks to CONAF and contact your relatives and the Swiss Embassy in Santiago if a natural disaster occurs.

Faithful summary of the official texts below, which prevail.

  • renseignez-vous auprès de vos personnes de contact ou du personnel de l'hôtel de la situation sur place et, en particulier, des quartiers à éviter;
  • montrez-vous particulièrement prudent dans les centres de Santiago et de Valparaíso. Les vols et les attaques violentes sont fréquents surtout à Valparaíso, notamment dans la basse ville et dans les rues touristiques qui longent les collines;
  • renoncez à visiter les quartiers pauvres, en particulier la nuit;
  • ne garez votre voiture que sur des parkings surveillés;
  • évitez de changer de l'argent dans la rue;
  • ne portez pas des bijoux ostensibles ou précieux;

In brief
  • British nationals should follow local authorities' advice and evacuation orders in eastern Santiago due to heavy rain and mudslides in San José de Maipo and other areas.
  • British nationals travelling to the Araucanía Region should be cautious due to ongoing civil unrest and violent incidents, with a state of emergency in effect.
  • Terrorists are likely to attack in Chile; British nationals should be aware of their surroundings and report suspicious behaviour or unattended packages.
  • British nationals should avoid all demonstrations in Chile, especially on 11 September, 29 March, and 1 May, to prevent deportation for involvement in violent acts.
  • British nationals should be vigilant against common crimes like pickpocketing and mugging, particularly in Santiago and Valparaiso, and be aware of distraction scams.
  • British nationals using taxis from Santiago Airport should use licensed services and be wary of scams that can lead to significant financial loss.

You should also read FCDO ’s overall travel advice and safety and security advice .

Araucanía Region

There is ongoing civil unrest in the Araucanía Region, especially around Temuco. This includes attacks by groups of demonstrators against both people and property. Be cautious if you travel within the Araucanía Region. There is an ongoing state of emergency in the provinces of Biobío, Arauco, Cautín and Malleco because of a significant increase in violent incidents. The military are assisting regional police. Follow the instructions of local authorities.

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Chile

Terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Chile.

Some individuals or groups claiming to represent the interests of indigenous communities have carried out attacks in the Araucanía, Biobío and Los Ríos regions of the country. State actors and businesses operating in these regions are the primary targets of these groups. You should exercise caution and follow the instructions of local authorities.

Anarchist groups have also carried out attacks, mostly in the Santiago Metropolitan region. Attacks are principally aimed at causing property damage. Keep bags with you at all times, as unattended bags might be treated with suspicion by local authorities. Report any suspicious behaviour or unattended packages to local authorities.

Political situation

There is a risk of violent protest in Santiago and other Chilean cities, particularly on Friday afternoons and evenings.

Even peaceful protests can become violent. The largest protests usually take place in central Santiago. Police can use tear gas and water cannons against protesters.

Avoid all demonstrations. Under Chilean law, you can be deported if you’re involved in or promote violent acts that could disturb social order or the system of government.

Nationwide protests often take place on significant dates, such as:

  • 11 September (anniversary of the military coup)
  • 29 March (Day of the Young Combatant)
  • 1 May (Workers’ Day)
Crime

Pickpocketing, mugging and thefts from vehicles are very common throughout Chile, including inside airports, churches, hotels and bus stations, and at viewpoints and petrol stations.

This is a list of scams and techniques which have been used on British Nationals in Chile, especially in central Santiago and Valparaiso:

- Distraction robbery: The victim is distracted by one person while a second person steals the victim’s handbag or backpack from their chair or from under the table.

- Liquid spill: Liquid is ‘accidentally’ spilled on a traveller, and the scammer steals the victim’s valuables while pretending to be assisting cleaning it off.

- Tyre puncture: The driver pulls over owing to a punctured tyre (not knowing that their tyre has been deliberately punctured). A person then approaches the car offering to help, and distracts the driver whilst a second person steals belongings from the car.

- Hire cars: Hire cars are targeted and broken into whilst parked at a viewpoint, petrol station or other location. Sometimes the driver is approached and distracted by one person while belongings are stolen from the car by a second person.

- Airport taxi: Unlicenced taxi drivers at Santiago Airport add extra digits to the amount for the taxi journey i.e. charging 5,000,000 CLP (approx. 5,000 GBP / 5,000 USD) instead of 50,000 CLP. Others have convinced passengers to enter their pin number into a credit card reader whose display cannot be read. People have lost up to 10,000 GBP via this method.

- Theft of belongings at Santiago airport: This includes luggage stolen both before check-in at the airport terminal and from the baggage carousel after arrival.

Open fires are strictly forbidden in national parks outside permitted camping areas. This includes burners for cooking purposes. Local authorities may revoke your tourist card if you’re caught starting a fire illegally. They may ask you to depart Chile within 72 hours or you may be subjected to deportation proceedings. You may also face detention, heavy fines and a ban from re-entering the country, especially if the open fire results in a forest fire.

Some insurance companies might not cover pickup truck rentals or have exclusions related to damage caused on unpaved roads. There is no car insurance available on Easter Island. In case of accident or damage to your rented vehicle, you will have to pay for the repairs yourself.

Restrictions in Santiago

To combat high levels of pollution in the winter, restrictions on driving in central Santiago, within the Américo Vespucio ring road, are in place from May to September. Vehicles with a green seal registered before September 1, 2011, are subject to a daily restriction based on the last two digits of the licence plate. When there is an alert, restrictions are in effect from Monday to Friday between 7:30 am and 9 pm. If a pre-emergency or environmental emergency is decreed, additional digits could be restricted. You can check the list of affected plate numbers in newspapers and online. Vehicle restrictions – Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications (Spanish only)

Political activities

Chilean law prohibits political activities by foreigners. Participating in demonstrations or promoting dissent, including on social media, may result in you being detained and/or deported.

2SLGBTQI+ persons

Chilean law does not prohibit sexual acts between individuals of the same sex. While homosexuality is generally tolerated, Chilean society remains fairly conservative. 2SLGBTQI+ persons could be discriminated against based on their sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression or sex characteristics. International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. The convention applies between Canada and Chile. If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Chile, and if the applicable conditions are met, you may apply for the return of your child to the Chilean court. If you are in this situation:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • contact the Central Authority for your province or territory of residence for information on starting an application under The Hague Convention
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Chile to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children's Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies. Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Money

The currency of Chile is the Chilean peso (CLP). Some small restaurants and stores outside Santiago may not accept credit cards. U.S. dollars are easily exchanged at banks and official foreign exchange bureaus across the country. However, purchases in U.S. dollars can only be made in certain stores in Santiago.

Long séjour

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Chile’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Chile set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Chilean Embassy in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

Your passport should have an ‘expiry date’ after the day you plan to leave Chile.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

British-Chilean dual nationals

British-Chilean dual nationals must enter and leave Chile using their Chilean passport. Chilean entry and exit requirements for dual nationals may change without notice. For further information check with the Chilean Embassy in the UK .

Visa requirements

You can visit Chile for up to 90 days without a visa.

The Chilean immigration authorities will give you a tourist card (‘tarjeta de turismo’), an A5-sized white form. Keep it safe and give it to immigration when you leave the country. If you lose it, Chilean police investigations (PDI) allows you to request a copy online (choose ‘Duplicado de tarjeta de turismo’). You can also go to the nearest PDI office.

To stay longer (to work or study, for business travel or for other reasons), you must meet the Chilean Government’s entry requirements .

Travelling with children

Chile requires children travelling with only one parent, with a guardian or alone, to have permission from the non-travelling parent or parents. Parents travelling with children for tourism have faced difficulty leaving Chile at the end of their visit when only one parent is present. You must have

  • a written notarised authorisation from the non-travelling parent(s)
  • an original birth certificate

If you’re travelling with children aged 17 and under, check the website of the Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs (website in Spanish) for what documents you need to show.

Travelling with dual national children

Before a dual national child aged 17 or under leaves Chile, you must get authorisation to travel from a Chilean notary (‘notaría’) if the child is travelling:

  • alone
  • with only one parent or guardian
  • with friends or relatives

If a child was born in Chile, they must have a Chilean passport to leave the country.

Travelling to Rapa Nui (Easter Island)

To enter Rapa Nui (Easter Island) you must:

  • complete a Rapa Nui entry form
  • show a return ticket
  • show a reservation registered with SERNATUR, the national tourism service (select region ‘Valparaiso’ and comuna ‘Rapa Nui’ to refine your search for accommodation) or an invitation letter from the provincial delegation

Transport and infrastructure

The health system — With 3.3 physicians per 1,000 people (27% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover. Health spending of 1,760 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.

Back home — a fever in the following weeks should be told to a doctor, naming the country.

  • Is the whole country advised against? United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no (reading of 24 October 2026).
  • Contractually, only an FDFA, FOPH or WHO advisory against the trip opens Module A (art. 18.1) — that is not the case today.

What are the entry requirements for Chile with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): All COVID-19 health restrictions for entering Chile were lifted on May 9, 2023, with no need for vaccination certificates or PCR tests. Chilean authorities recommend wearing masks in public transport and enclosed public spaces due to increased respiratory virus circulation. Visitors to Easter Island no longer require a PCR test for entry, but random testing may occur.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British citizens travelling to Chile must ensure their passport is valid beyond their planned departure date from the country. British-Chilean dual nationals are required to enter and exit Chile using their Chilean passport. Visitors can stay in Chile for up to 90 days without a visa and will receive a tourist card upon arrival.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a Chile visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (EUR 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.
  • Attach it to the visa file; if in doubt about the format, write to us.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Chile?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — No area exclusion at this level — compare cap, deductible and covered duration.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.

Can I be treated in Chile, or will I be evacuated?

3.3 physicians per 1,000 people (2023) versus 4.5 in Switzerland.

  • 1.9 hospital beds per 1,000 people versus 4.4 in Switzerland (World Bank).
  • With 3.3 physicians per 1,000 people (27% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover. Health spending of 1,760 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.

Chile: safety, in figures?

  • 14.9 road deaths per 100,000 people versus 2.2 in Switzerland (World Bank, WHO).
  • The homicide rate is 10 times Switzerland's: violence is a real risk there, concentrated in the areas named by the official advisories. On the road, 7 times more deaths than in Switzerland: road crashes are the leading cause of death of healthy travellers (CDC) — seat belt, no night driving, a driver or a taxi from a rank.
