How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

Hepatitis BCDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers of all ages traveling to Tajikistan.

MeaslesCDC ↗

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult your doctor or an international vaccination centre at least eight weeks before departure to assess your health and receive vaccination recommendations. France Diplomatie
  • Ensure you are up to date with French vaccination calendar, particularly against diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis, pertussis and measles; your vaccination record may be requested upon arrival. France Diplomatie
  • Carry only necessary medications in original packaging with original labels, accompanied by a prescription listing drugs by international non-proprietary name; verify authorisation in your destination country. France Diplomatie
  • In Tajikistan, malaria occurs in Gorno-Badakhshan, Khatlon, Dushanbe and Khodjent regions particularly from June to October; consult a doctor about preventive treatment before travel. France Diplomatie
  • Medical facilities in Tajikistan are poorly equipped and unhygienic; ensure you have travel insurance covering local treatment or medical evacuation, and contact your insurer immediately if referred for treatment. Foreign Office
  • Tajikistan hospitals require financial guarantee before treatment; bring disposable syringes and dressings, and arrange serious medical care outside the country if needed. DFAE

  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Health — Foreign Office

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Call 03 (or 103 from a mobile phone) and ask for an ambulance. The operator will likely only speak Tajik and Russian.

Contact your insurance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

  • check the latest vaccine recommendations for Tajikistan
  • see where to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

See what health risks you’ll face in Tajikistan .

Altitude sickness is a risk in parts of Tajikistan. Read more about altitude sickness on TravelHealthPro .

Air quality

Tajikistan, particularly Dushanbe and Khatlon region, often suffers from poor air quality, particularly during dust storms. Try to minimise your exposure to outside air by staying in an air-conditioned indoor place as much as possible, with windows and doors closed and well sealed.

Wash all fruit, vegetables and other foods, which might have been exposed. Regularly damp-dust all indoor surfaces, washing your hands afterwards. Monitor local reports and weather forecasts for the latest information and advice.

Medication

The legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can be different in other countries.

Read best practice when travelling with medicines on TravelHealthPro .

Basic medicines including painkillers are available without a prescription. Phone a Tajik pharmacy in advance to check if your UK prescription will be accepted. You may need to get your UK prescription translated into Russian or Tajik. You can get a translation in Tajikistan– find an interpreter or translator .

Some prescription medications are not widely available. Medications often come under different brand names and Western brand name drugs may be counterfeit, so ask for the drug’s generic name. If your medication is not available, you may be able to get it couriered from a third country, though this could take time.

You may need to pay cash for medication

Healthcare in Tajikistan

The quality of medical care in Tajikistan is generally poor. Most medical facilities are badly equipped and unhygienic, with a limited supply of drugs. Medical facilities outside Dushanbe are quite basic and, in some locations, almost non-existent. There is no guarantee that equipment will have been properly sterilised, especially in rural hospitals. There is no reciprocal healthcare agreement between the UK and Tajikistan

FCDO has a list of medical providers in Tajikistan where some staff will speak English.

Travel and mental health

Read FCDO guidance on travel and mental health . There is also mental health guidance on TravelHealthPro .

Exercise increased caution in Tajikistan due to the risk of terrorism , unexploded landmines , and limited ability to assist U.S.-Tajik dual nationals . Some areas have increased risk. Read the entire Travel Advisory..

Terrorism

There are terrorist organizations in the region. There is risk of terrorist violence, including terrorist attacks and other activity in Tajikistan. Visit the U.S. Department of State’s country reports on terrorism to learn more.

Landmines and unexploded ordnances

Unexploded landmines and cluster munitions are a hazard along the Afghan-Tajik and Uzbek-Tajik borders, the Vakhsh and Rasht valleys, and in the popular hiking area of Romit.

  • Pay close attention to land mine warning signs.
  • Do not venture off the road into areas marked with red and white plastic tape for any reason.
  • Avoid roadside ditches, shoulders, and unmarked trails in these regions.
  • Never touch anything resembling unexploded munitions.

Some unmarked landmines may also be present in the Surobad district of GBAO and the Sarazam district.

U.S. government employee travel restrictions

  • U.S. government employees working in Tajikistan are not permitted to travel between cities at night.
  • U.S. government employees working in Tajikistan must obtain special authorization from the embassy security office to travel to border areas with Afghanistan due to safety risks.

Avertissement

However, unexploded landmines and weapons continue to pose a serious risk. Border areas may be subject to sudden restrictions on movement and a heightened security presence. You should exercise caution if travelling near the Kyrgyzstan–Tajikistan border, check local conditions before travel, and follow the advice of the local authorities.

Tajikistan-Afghanistan border

In November 2025, 5 Chinese nationals were killed in 2 separate cross-border attacks launched from Afghanistan in the Shamsiddin Shohon (Khatlon) and Darvoz (GBAO) regions. On 13 August 2026, a local resident was killed by a stray bullet in Darvoz during armed clashes along the border of Afghanistan’s Badakhshan Province.

Armed clashes involving terrorist or criminal groups may occur without notice close to the Tajikistan border in Afghanistan’s Badakhshan region. Armed groups have previously conducted cross-border incursions from Afghanistan. You should stay alert in border regions and follow the instructions of local authorities. Do not walk off-road – there are both marked and unmarked minefields.

Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region

There is a risk of civil unrest in Khorog and other towns in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO). There were serious disturbances in 2021 and there have been violent clashes in and around Khorog since 2022 with casualties. There is an increased security presence. Some roads in Khorog, Rushan and other parts of Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region are temporarily closed. The security situation can change at short notice, with the possibility of further unrest.

Border Guard patrols may ask to see your passport and GBAO permit when you travel in GBAO, particularly in areas close to the border with Afghanistan

If you’re travelling in the region, be alert in public places and check for security announcements by the local authorities.

Tavildara Region

Take local advice in the Tavildara Region of central Tajikistan, as there are minefields dating from the civil war in the mountains.

Medical and rescue facilities are unreliable where they exist at all.

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Tajikistan

Terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Tajikistan.

Terrorist attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by foreign nationals, such as:

  • transport hubs
  • embassies
  • religious sites and places of worship
  • sporting and cultural events
  • shopping centres and crowded places

Examples of previous significant attacks include:

- in March 2024, a plot to attack New Year (Nowruz) celebrations in Vahdat using poison was disrupted by Tajik authorities

- in 2023, three suspected terrorists were reportedly killed by Tajik border forces while planning an attack ahead of Tajik national day celebrations. There are infrequent incursions by armed criminal and terrorist groups across the Afghanistan border into Tajikistan, mainly at night

Stay aware of your surroundings and take particular care during periods of national or religious significance and on public holidays, including Nowruz, Independence Day and New Year Celebrations. Keep up to date with local media reports and follow the advice of local authorities.

Political situation

Avoid demonstrations or large gatherings of people, which are likely to attract a heavy presence from security forces. Use caution and maintain a high level of security awareness, particularly in public places. Be alert to any security announcements by the Tajik authorities.

Crime

There have been occasional muggings and petty crime against foreigners in Dushanbe. Pickpocketing is common in crowded places such as markets and on public transport. Criminals may target foreigners as they are assumed to be carrying valuable items. Keep valuables in a safe place and out of public view.

Use caution and take measures to reduce your personal risk, such as:

  • keep sight of your belongings at all times
  • be aware of thieves using distraction techniques
  • avoid carrying all your valuables together in one place e.g. handbags or pockets
  • consider avoiding walking alone at night
  • exercise a similar level of caution as you would in the UK
  • do not use unofficial taxis or a taxi already occupied by a passenger, particularly at night. Consider using private cars or pre-arranged taxis
  • do not show large amounts of money and be wary of strangers offering help or being over-friendly
Bank card fraud

Fraudsters can steal your card details without you noticing. Use ATMs inside banks if possible, and check ATMs on the street for signs of tampering. Keep cards in sight when paying in shops and restaurants. Read more about how to avoid bank card fraud .

Drink spiking and sexual assault

There have been cases of sexual assault, including rape, reported to the British Embassy. This includes suspected use of ‘date rape’ drugs targeting foreigners. Alcohol and drugs can lead to you being less alert, less in control and less aware of your environment. You should:

  • not leave drinks unattended
  • not accept drinks from strangers
  • be aware of how much you are drinking
  • not accept lifts from strangers or acquaintances at any time

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. It does not apply between Canada and Tajikistan. If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Tajikistan by an abducting parent:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Tajikistan to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies. Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Dress and behaviour

Tajikistan is a secular country. However, Islamic practices and beliefs are adhered to, particularly in rural areas. To avoid offending local sensitivities:

  • dress conservatively
  • behave discreetly
  • respect religious and social traditions
Money

The currency of Tajikistan is the Tajik Somoni (TJS), which is used for most transactions. The economy is primarily cash-based. Credit cards are not widely accepted, except in larger hotels, restaurants and cafés in larger cities. You can exchange money, especially U.S. dollars, at exchange bureaus or at any bank or major hotel. There are ATMs in Dushanbe, but some may not accept international cards and run out of money. In rural areas, ATMs are not as prevalent.

Currency declaration

There are no restrictions on the amount of foreign currency you can import. However, you must declare any foreign currency equivalent to more than $3,000 USD. It is prohibited to export local currencies. Foreign currency declarations apply to any monetary instruments.

Foreign Office — laws and cultural differences

Local laws

Tajikistan has a secular constitution. Most Tajik citizens are Muslims and may be conservative, particularly in rural areas. Respect local traditions, customs, laws and religions at all times. Make sure your actions do not offend other cultures or religious beliefs, especially during the holy month of Ramadan or when you visit religious areas sites.

Ramadan

Ramadan is a holy month for Muslims. The dates vary by year and country. Cafés and restaurants may amend their menus and be busy around fast-breaking (‘Iftar’). Areas around mosques are also likely to be busy around prayer times. Be particularly aware of religious sensitivities at this time.

Personal ID

You must carry your passport, or a notarised copy of it, with you at all times. The police can arrest you if you do not carry ID. You can get a copy of your passport notarised in the UK and translated into Tajik or Russian, or use a copy notarised in Tajikistan.

Alcohol laws and bans

The legal age for purchasing alcohol is 18. If you appear to be drunk, the police can take you to a police station and issue you with a fine or detain you in a police cell overnight.

Smoking ban

It is illegal to smoke on the street in Tajikistan, and punishable by a fine.

Illegal drugs and prison sentences

Possession of drugs is illegal. You can get a lengthy prison sentence if convicted. Prison conditions are basic. The police may conduct drug raids in bars and night clubs. Stay calm and follow instructions.

Woman travelling alone

Women travelling alone in Tajikistan may receive unwanted attention, harassment or other difficulties. Consider not going out alone at night. See advice for women travelling abroad.

Using cameras in secure areas

It is illegal to take photos of or use drones near anything related to the military or security, including border checkpoints, military sites and police stations. Check carefully that you are not near any military or security facilities. The Tajik authorities may ask you not to photograph government buildings.

Drones

The possession or use of drones or UAVs is prohibited unless you have permission from the Tajik National Security Committee. If you are found using drones without permission, you may be detained and your equipment confiscated.

LGBT+ travellers

Although same-sex sexual activity is not illegal under Tajik law, local attitudes are generally conservative and levels of tolerance and acceptance in society vary, particularly outside the main cities. Showing affection in public may receive unwanted and negative attention. Read more advice for LGBT+ travellers.

Money

Tajikistan is mainly a cash-only economy. Very few businesses accept credit cards and travellers’ cheques are not accepted. There is an increasing number of ATMs in Dushanbe and other larger towns, but none in rural areas. Most ATMs only accept Visa cards. Bring enough cash for your entire stay or withdraw cash from an ATM in Dushanbe ahead of any planned travel to other regions. Only change money at officially authorised currency exchanges. Tajik somoni is only available in Tajikistan. US dollars are the most easily exchanged and widely accepted foreign currency. Euros or Russian roubles are also easy to exchange. It may be difficult to exchange other currencies. Official exchange booths may not accept damaged or marked bank notes, nor will they accept US dollars issued before 2013.

Posting on social media

Be careful when posting images of your visit on social media. It is illegal to post images or comments on social media that show disrespect towards religion, culture or national symbols. If you share or publish images that the authorities consider to be insulting, you could get a fine or a prison sentence. Disrespectful content, including criticism of the government, could result in fines or detention.

Visa touristique

  • Guliston (TJ) / Kyzyl-Bel Avtodorozhnyi (KG) : ouvert à tous ;
  • Madaniyat (TJ) / Kairagach Avtodoroznyi (KG) : ouvert uniquement aux populations tadjike et kirghize ;
  • Ovchikalacha (TJ) / Kulundu Avtodoroznhyi (KG) : fermé.
  • District du Lakhsh-GBAO (TJ) / Och (KG) :
  • Karamik (TJ) / Karamyk Avtodorozhnyi (Chon Alay, KG) : fermé officiellement, mais ouvert de manière effective ;

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Tajikistan’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Tajikistan set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Tajik Embassy in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

To enter Tajikistan, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive and have at least 2 blank pages.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

You must have a visa to enter Tajikistan. If you arrive without a valid visa, you may be detained and refused entry. Travellers who have arrived without the correct documentation have been fined and deported. You will be required to pay for any ticket out of Tajikistan.

If you’re entering Tajikistan on a visa, check it and carefully note the date of expiry and the number of entries permitted.

Do not overstay your visa, or exceed your permitted duration of stay, even for a very short period. If you overstay your visa, you could get a fine and will not be allowed to leave Tajikistan until you get an exit visa. You can pay for an exit visa at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Consular Office. Once you’re in Tajikistan, you can apply for a visa extension at the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs . Most visa categories can be extended in Tajikistan. However, Tourist Visas (T visas) cannot be extended. If you are travelling on a Tourist Visa, you must leave the country before your visa expires. For further information on visa requirements and extensions, visit Consular Department of the MFA .

Exit visas are not available at airports in Tajikistan. If you’re travelling overland, make sure you arrive at your intended border crossing in good time before your period of stay or visa expires.

Applying for a visa

Apply online for an e-visa from the Tajikistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs before travelling or for a physical visa on arrival (must be pre-approved). Carefully review the guidance provided on the Tajikistan e-visa website on length of visa validity. Your e-visa will only be valid for 60 days after approval. Make sure you get the correct type of visa and that it will be valid for the duration of your visit. British nationals have been turned away with incorrect visas. Allow at least two weeks for processing.

You may be asked to provide proof of hotel bookings and any arrangements booked through a tour operator to be issued with a tourist visa or e-visa. This is usually requested in the form of a letter of invitation (LoI), a formal letter addressed to either the applicant or consular office by a Tajik-based sponsor providing details of the applicant and…

FDFA (Switzerland) — transport and specific advice, in French

Transport and infrastructure

The health system — With 1.9 physicians per 1,000 people (58% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover. Health spending of 85 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.

  • Is the whole country advised against? United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no (reading of 27 September 2026).

What are the entry requirements for Tajikistan with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): French nationals may stay in Tajikistan visa-free for up to 30 days; stays exceeding 30 days require a visa obtained via evisa.tj before arrival or at the airport. Tourist visas valid for 90 days permit actual stays of maximum 60 days only. Passports must remain valid for at least 6 months from visa application date. Foreign visitors must register with the Interior Ministry (OVIR) within 10 business days of arrival, except those holding airport-issued tourist visas, e-visas from evisa.tj, or staying fewer than 10 business days.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date and have at least two blank pages. You must obtain a visa before arrival; arriving without one risks detention, fines, and deportation at your expense. Tourist visas cannot be extended; you must leave before expiry or face fines and exit visa requirements at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a Tajikistan visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (EUR 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.
  • Attach it to the visa file; if in doubt about the format, write to us.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Tajikistan?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — No area exclusion at this level — compare cap, deductible and covered duration.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.
