How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

Recommended vaccines and medicines12

Routine vaccinesCDC ↗

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include Chickenpox (Varicella) Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (DTaP, Tdap, or Td) Flu (influenza) Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) Polio Shingles

COVID-19CDC ↗

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines. Please see  Your COVID-19 Vaccination  for more information.

CholeraCDC ↗

Active cholera transmission is  widespread  in Angola. Cholera is rare in travelers.  Certain factors  may increase the risk of getting cholera or having severe disease ( more information ). Avoiding unsafe food and water and washing your hands can also help prevent cholera. Vaccination may be considered for children and adults who are traveling to areas of active cholera transmission.

Hepatitis ACDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Angola. Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series. Travelers allergic to a vaccine component should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.

Hepatitis BCDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers of all ages traveling to Angola.

MalariaCDC ↗

CDC recommends that travelers going to Angola take prescription medicine to prevent malaria. Depending on the medicine you take, you will need to start taking this medicine multiple days before your trip, as well as during and after your trip. Talk to your doctor about which malaria medication you should take. Transmission areas All Drug resistance 1 Chloroquine Species P. falciparum (primarily) P. malariae , P.

MeaslesCDC ↗

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

MonkeypoxCDC ↗

Monkeypox vaccination is recommended for any adult who anticipates any of the following activities during travel: Sexual or intimate contact with a new partner Sexual or intimate contact at a commercial sex venue, like a sex club or bathhouse Sexual or intimate contact in exchange for money, goods, drugs, or other trade Sexual or intimate contact in association with a large public event, such as a rave, party, or…

PolioCDC ↗

In Angola, poliovirus has been identified in the past year. Travelers to Angola are at increased risk of exposure to poliovirus.

RabiesCDC ↗

Dogs infected with rabies are commonly found in Angola. If rabies exposures occur while in Angola, rabies vaccines may only be available in larger suburban/urban medical facilities.

TyphoidCDC ↗

Recommended for most travelers. Typhoid vaccine is not 100% effective. Practicing safe food and water habits , including washing hands at key times , can also help prevent typhoid fever .

Yellow FeverCDC ↗

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult a doctor or international vaccination center at least 8 weeks before travel for health assessments and recommended vaccinations, including diphtheria, tetanus, and polio.
  • Carry necessary personal medications in their original packaging with an international common name prescription, and verify their legality in the destination country.
  • Take precautions against mosquito-borne illnesses like Chikungunya and Dengue by wearing long clothing, using repellent, and protecting accommodations.
  • Adhere to strict food and water hygiene, including regular hand washing, consuming only bottled water, and eating well-cooked food to prevent diseases like cholera.
  • Be aware that healthcare in Luanda is limited and private clinics require advance payment; medical treatment outside Luanda is very scarce.
  • Ensure you have adequate travel insurance and sufficient funds to cover potential medical treatments abroad and repatriation, as hospitals may demand financial guarantees.

FDFA (Switzerland) — medical care, in French

Liens voyages

France Diplomatiesource ↗updated 15.09.2026 · read 16.10.2026

  • Fièvre jaune : la vaccination contre la fièvre jaune est recommandée. Pour les voyageurs ne provenant pas d’un pays à risque de fièvre jaune, la vaccination antiamarile n’est plus obligatoire pour entrer sur le territoire angolais ;
  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Méningite ACWY : en cas de séjour pendant la saison sèche (habituellement hiver et printemps) ou d’épidémie signalée ;
  • Tuberculose : chez les enfants de moins de 15 ans en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Chikungunya : en cas d’épidémie ou de séjour prolongé ;
  • Dengue : en cas d’épidémie active ou de séjour prolongé en zone endémique ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;

Health — Foreign Office

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Call 112 and ask for an ambulance.

Contact your insurance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

  • check the latest vaccine recommendations for Angola
  • see where to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

Updated 04.03.2026

Exercise increased caution in Angola due to crime , health , unrest , and landmines . Some areas have increased risk. Read the entire Travel Advisory.

Crime

Petty crime, assaults, and armed robberies are common. Other crimes, like burglary, occur, but with less frequency.

Health

Medical services in Angola are limited. Adequate trauma and ambulance services are not widely available. Even a minor health issue may require medical evacuation at the traveler’s expense.

Unrest

Demonstrations related to the local political situation may occur with little notice. They may disrupt transportation and other essential services.

Landmines

Landmines and unexploded ordnance exist throughout Angola. Many locations with unexploded landmines and ordnance are marked. However, some may be unmarked or hard to spot.

  • ne pas se déplacer avec des objets de valeur et d’importantes sommes d’argent ;
  • circuler en voiture vitres fermées et portes verrouillées ;
  • ne pas sortir des axes routiers importants et ne pas conduire de nuit ;
  • ne pas circuler seul(e) et à pied, y compris en centre-ville ;
  • ne pas utiliser les moyens de transport collectif locaux ;
  • utiliser des compagnies de taxi sûres et identifiées (deux compagnies proposent à Luanda des applications qui permettent de commander des taxis par géolocalisation) ;
  • ne pas stationner son véhicule dans des endroits peu fréquentés ou mal éclairés ;
  • faire preuve de vigilance lors des retraits d’argent ;
  • ne pas opposer de résistance en cas d’agression ;
  • éviter les rassemblements.

Swiss passport — FDFA (Switzerland), in French

In brief
  • Protests and violent clashes with security forces may occur, and road blockades are possible.
  • Carry sufficient US dollars in cash, as ATM withdrawals may not be possible; check the maximum amount allowed at the border with the Angolan Embassy in Bern.
  • Avoid tourist travel to Cabinda, Lunda Norte, and Lunda Sul provinces due to security concerns, except for Cabinda city.
  • Do not resist during armed assaults, as perpetrators may resort to violence; keep vehicle doors locked and windows up.
  • Avoid all travel at night, both on foot and by car, and consider hiring a car with a driver.
  • Carry a certified copy of your passport and visa to prove identity during police checks.

Faithful summary of the official texts below, which prevail.

FDFA update note — Le chapitre Derniers développements a été enlevé (manifestations violentes). (published 01.10.2025)

General assessment

World Meteorological Organization

Regional risks — Foreign Office

This section has safety advice for regions of Angola. It only covers regions where the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office ( FCDO ) has specific advice.

You should also read FCDO ’s overall travel advice and safety and security advice .

Cabinda Province, except Cabinda city

FCDO advises against all but essential travel to Cabinda Province, except to Cabinda city.

There are regular violent incidents including rape, murder and kidnappings in Cabinda Province. These have involved both foreigners and Angolans.

Separatist groups in the northern exclave of Cabinda (a province not joined to the rest of Angola) have been known to carry out attacks involving both foreigners and Angolans. Groups claiming responsibility for these attacks have said they’ll continue attacks against foreigners.

Border areas in Lunda Norte Province

FCDO advises against all but essential travel to within 1km of the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in Lunda Norte province, except for official border crossings and their access roads.

FCDO also advises against all travel to the provinces of Kasaï and Kasaï Central, across the border in the Central Democratic Republic of Congo .

The rest of Lunda Norte and Lunda Sul

FCDO advises against travelling to Lunda Norte and Lunda Sol unless absolutely necessary. Get security advice and travel with the support of a security company or sponsoring organisation.

The Angolan authorities are sensitive to the presence of foreigners in diamond-producing areas, which includes Lunda Norte and Lunda Sul. They may impose restrictions on your movement in these provinces. If you do not comply, they may arrest you and detain you.

The diamond mines increase the threat of crime and banditry on roads leading to and from these areas. Bandits may carry out armed hold-ups.

Areas outside Luanda and the provincial capitals

If you travel outside Luanda and the provincial capitals, go with people or organisations that know the area, as conditions can be difficult. There is widespread poverty, limited infrastructure, and social exclusion and disease. There are mines and unexploded weapons in many parts of the country.

Transport and accommodation are extremely limited outside Luanda. Officials are likely to ask for your passport and visa or entry stamp, so take the originals with you.

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Angola

Although there’s no recent history of terrorism in Angola, attacks cannot be ruled out.

Protests and demonstrations

Public gatherings and demonstrations can occur with little notice and can quickly turn violent. In recent years, there have been protests against the increase in fuel prices and cost of living. In July 2025 there were 3 days of violent riots. Similar protests cannot be ruled out in future.

To minimise your personal risk:

  • follow local media for news of any planned protests
  • stay away from areas where protests are planned
  • leave quickly and do not attempt to watch or photograph any demonstration or disturbance
  • consider making contingency plans
  • keep a stock of essential supplies
  • keep your travel documents up-to-date, including appropriate visas
  • be prepared to move or go into curfew at short notice if told to by the authorities
  • see how to prepare for a crisis overseas
Crime

There is a high level of crime in Luanda, some of it violent. Muggers can be armed and some attacks have been fatal. If you are attacked, hand over your money and valuables immediately.

Most international companies and organisations operating in Angola have security rules for staff. If your company has rules, read and follow them.

Protecting yourself and your belongings

Criminals target areas popular with foreigners. You should be particularly careful when withdrawing money from banks and ATMs, as you could be followed and robbed.

You can reduce your personal risk by:

  • using pre-arranged cars or hotel cars when withdrawing money
  • not walking around in Luanda, especially not alone or after dark
  • not wearing expensive-looking jewellery or watches or using a mobile in public places
  • not walking between bars and restaurants on the Ilha do Cabo
  • avoiding crowded places like markets and all large gatherings

Put your valuables and cash in a hotel safe where practical. Keep a certified copy of your passport’s photo page in a separate place.

Vehicle crime

Theft from stationary or slow-moving cars is common in downtown Luanda. Keep valuables out of sight and do not use mobiles or laptops while in traffic. When driving, keep doors locked and windows closed. Do not respond if anyone signals you to pull over. Thieves may fake a minor traffic incident to get you out of your car. If they succeed, they may rob you and also steal the car.

Sexual assault

Incidents of rape have been reported in popular nightlife areas, as well as in private homes. Never travel alone at night.

Personal ID

Always carry ID – it is safest to carry a certified copy your passport’s photo page . If travelling outside of Luanda and the provincial capitals, take the originals with you, packed as securely as you can. If you do not have any ID, you may get an on-the-spot fine of 15,000 kwanzas.

Illegal drugs and prison sentences

Drug taking and smuggling are offences. Punishments can be severe and prison conditions are very poor.

Local laws

You must abide by local laws. Learn about what you should do and how we can help if you are arrested or detained abroad.

Drugs

Punishment for drug-related offences can be severe. Drugs, alcohol and travel

Illegal or restricted activities

Involvement in black-market currency conversion could lead to arrest. Some handicrafts considered of cultural value may be retained by customs. It is illegal to remove turtle shells and ivory from the country. Avoid photographing airports, major roads, bridges, communications installations, military personnel and government buildings. Taking photos of urban areas may be frowned upon by police.

2SLGBTQI+ persons

Angola does not prohibit sexual acts between persons of the same sex. However, homosexuality is not widely socially accepted. Same-sex marriage is not recognized. 2SLGBTQI+ persons should carefully consider the risks of travelling to Angola. Travel and your sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. It does not apply between Canada and Angola. If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Angola by an abducting parent:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Angola to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies. Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Driving

You should carry an international driving permit. More about the International Driving Permit

Money

The currency in Angola is the kwanza (AOA). The kwanza is not convertible on the international market. Dollars can be converted into kwanzas, or vice versa, at the few exchange bureaus in Luanda or at local banks. Receiving foreign currency is often very difficult due to present scarcity (even for those with foreign currency accounts). Kwanzas cannot be taken out of the country. No more than US$15,000 can be taken into or out of Angola, unless an official declaration is made upon entry. Newer U.S.-dollar bills are preferred, due to the ease with which the older bills are counterfeited. Credit cards are accepted at only a few of Luanda’s largest hotels and restaurants, and it varies as to which cards are accepted. VISA is the most commonly accepted credit card. Leave a copy of your card information with a trusted family member or friend in case of emergency. ATMs dispense kwanzas only. Some ATMs in Luanda accept VISA cards, but only to withdraw kwanzas. Note that machines often malfunction or run out of cash. Debit cards do not work.

  • d’effectuer une demande en ligne : https://www.smevisa.gov.ao/ (en anglais) ;
  • d’obtenir une pré-autorisation (suite à la demande faite en ligne) ;
  • d’effectuer le paiement de 120 USD à l’aéroport ;
  • de présenter les justificatifs nécessaires (ressources, lettre d’invitation et/ou réservation d’hôtel, billet retour) ;

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Angola’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Angola set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, check with the Angolan immigration department or contact the Consulate General of Angola in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

Your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive in Angola and have at least 2 blank pages.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual Citizenship .

Visa requirements

You do not need a visa to visit Angola for up to 30 days, if visiting for tourism.

If travelling for work, study or business, you must get a visa in advance . If you do not have a visa, or if you have the wrong visa, you may be stopped from boarding or detained at the airport on arrival. Angola’s deportation process can take a long time.

You can be fined 15,000 Angolan kwanzas a day if you overstay your visa. You may not be allowed to leave the country until your fine has been paid. You may also not be allowed to re-enter Angola.

The Angolan authorities can fine you for visa offences, including:

  • working, studying or living in Angola without the correct visa
  • changing employment without notifying the authorities
  • employing staff with incorrect visas
  • failing to renew residence cards
  • changing address without notifying the authorities
Vaccine requirements

There is a risk of yellow fever transmission in Angola. This means you will need a certificate of yellow fever vaccination for some onward travel, including to South Africa.

For full details about health entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, see TravelHealthPro’s Angola guide .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Angola. You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Taking money into and out of Angola

Declare cash or travellers cheques if the value is 5,000 US dollars or more (10,000 if you’re a resident). You’ll get a certified declaration to show you brought it in with you.

You cannot take out more than 5,000 US dollars (10,000 if you’re a resident) or its equivalent in any foreign currency.

You can take out up to 50,000 kwanzas in cash in addition to the foreign currency.

Officials at the airport may search you to make sure you’re not leaving the country with more than the allowed amount.

Transport and infrastructure

What is the official risk level in Angola today?

Level 2/4 — Exercise Increased Caution, U.S. Department of State, retrieved on 16 October 2026.

  • Is the whole country advised against? United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no (reading of 27 September 2026).
  • Switzerland’s FDFA advises against travel to certain regions (published 01.10.2025).
  • Contractually, only an FDFA, FOPH or WHO advisory against the trip opens Module A (art. 18.1) — that is not the case today.
  • International medical cover, 24/7 number saved, and a read of the areas named under Safety & risks before booking the itinerary.

Is the whole of Angola advised against, or only some areas?

An area advised against does not rule out the country.

  • Official answers: United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no.
  • Foreign Office, regional risks: “This section has safety advice for regions of Angola. It only covers regions where the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office ( FCDO ) has specific advice. You should also read FCDO ’s overall travel advice and safety and security advice . Cabinda…”
  • Keep your country of residence's advisory on booking day and on departure day: that is what your policy's clauses cite.

What are the entry requirements for Angola with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): French nationals are exempt from tourist visas for stays up to 30 days per entry, totaling 90 days annually, provided their passport is valid beyond their stay. For stays exceeding 30 days, French nationals must apply online for a tourist visa before arrival and may seek renewal from the SME. Other travelers requiring short-stay visas can obtain them at Luanda airport with a pre-authorization, a USD 120 payment, and supporting documents.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British citizens must ensure their passport is valid for at least six months beyond their arrival date in Angola and has two blank pages. British citizens do not require a visa for tourist stays up to 30 days, but a visa is mandatory for work, study, or business travel. Overstaying a visa in Angola can result in a fine of 15,000 Angolan kwanzas per day, potentially preventing departure.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a Angola visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (EUR 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.
  • Attach it to the visa file; if in doubt about the format, write to us.

Is an Amex, Visa or Mastercard enough in Angola?

At today's level 2/4, card by card:

  • Amex Platinum — No area exclusion at this level — but three written limits: deductible and prior approval, 90-day cap, advance under conditions.
  • Visa — No express area exclusion — but a €156,000 cap, 90 days, and the war/instability exclusion in the background.
  • Mastercard — No exclusion in play at this level — but a €155,000 cap and 90 covered days.
  • Three lines to read in your notice: the duration (often 90 days per trip), the settlement (reimbursement afterwards or direct payment of the hospital) and the area exclusion at level 4/4.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Angola?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — No area exclusion at this level — compare cap, deductible and covered duration.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.
  • Have your IPID number or the PDF of the terms and ask an expert to call you back: the answer is in the document, not in the brochure.

How do I use the medical network on this page?

The page reads hospitals, pharmacies and doctors from OpenStreetMap, around the point you choose.

  • Type your city, hotel or beach: the map re-centres, 24/7 emergency rooms come first.
  • Each row gives the phone when the source publishes it, the nearest street, directions and the Google Maps listing.
  • The PDF briefing repeats the same places, numbered on a printable map.
  • No customer reviews: OpenStreetMap has none, and we invent none.

Which vaccines and health precautions for Angola?

The sourced detail is under Medical network › Health: vaccines, diseases present, altitude, outbreaks.

  • CDC (Travelers' Health), depending on the trip: Routine vaccines, COVID-19, Cholera, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Malaria, Measles.
  • France Diplomatie reports in the country: dengue, malaria, chikungunya — mosquito protection day and night.
  • WHO: 1 outbreak alert(s) for this country in the last 24 months, including “Cholera - Angola” (28 March 2025).
  • See a doctor or a travel clinic 8 weeks before departure (Foreign Office).

Can I be treated in Angola, or will I be evacuated?

0.2 physicians per 1,000 people (2022) versus 4.5 in Switzerland.

  • 0.8 hospital beds per 1,000 people versus 4.4 in Switzerland (World Bank).
  • With 0.2 physicians per 1,000 people (96% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover. Health spending of 76 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.
  • When the local facility is not enough, Maximum's medical team decides the evacuation to a suitable centre, and pays for it (art. 6.2.2).

Angola: safety, in figures?

4.1 homicides per 100,000 people (2016) versus 0.6 in Switzerland and 1.3 in France.

  • 26.1 road deaths per 100,000 people versus 2.2 in Switzerland (World Bank, WHO).
  • The homicide rate is 7 times Switzerland's: violence is a real risk there, concentrated in the areas named by the official advisories. On the road, 12 times more deaths than in Switzerland: road crashes are the leading cause of death of healthy travellers (CDC) — seat belt, no night driving, a driver or a taxi from a rank.

  • Advised against — all but essential travel: Cabinda, Lunda Norte, Lunda Sul.

Which laws and customs should I know in Angola?

Local laws apply to every traveller; here is what the official texts say.

  • Canadian travellers must carry an international driving permit and abide by all local laws, as drug offences and black-market currency conversion can lead to severe penalties and arrest.
  • Travellers should avoid photographing government buildings, military personnel, airports, and bridges, as this may lead to camera confiscation or attention from authorities.
  • While same-sex sexual acts are not prohibited, homosexuality is not widely socially accepted, and same-sex marriage is not recognized in Angola.
  • Travellers should carry a certified copy of their passport's photo page as identification; failure to do so may result in an on-the-spot fine of 15,000 kwanzas.
  • No more than US$15,000 can be taken into or out of Angola without an official declaration, and the Angolan kwanza is not convertible on the international market.
