How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

Recommended vaccines and medicines10

Routine vaccinesCDC ↗

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include Chickenpox (Varicella) Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (DTaP, Tdap, or Td) Flu (influenza) Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) Polio Shingles

COVID-19CDC ↗

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines. Please see  Your COVID-19 Vaccination  for more information.

All travelers should take steps to prevent mosquito bites. Chikungunya vaccination is generally not recommended. Travelers who wish to consider vaccination can visit “What to consider before traveling” on the chikungunya vaccines page to learn more.

Hepatitis ACDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Mauritius. Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series. Travelers allergic to a vaccine component should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.

Hepatitis BCDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers of all ages traveling to Mauritius.

MeaslesCDC ↗

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult a doctor or international vaccination center for health assessments and recommendations, including vaccinations, before your trip.
  • Carry necessary personal medications in their original packaging with an international common name prescription, and verify their legality in the destination country.
  • Ensure your French vaccination schedule is up-to-date, particularly for diphtheria, tetanus, polio, whooping cough, and measles, as a vaccination booklet may be requested.
  • Consider additional vaccinations for yellow fever, measles, Hepatitis A, typhoid fever, chikungunya, and dengue based on your travel plans and destination.
  • Be aware that medical care outside major cities is limited, and private hospitals require upfront payment or financial guarantees.
  • If you take regular medication, bring a sufficient supply and check import regulations for controlled substances or psychiatric medications with the relevant foreign representation.

  • Fièvre jaune : la vaccination contre la fièvre jaune peut être exigée à l’entrée du pays pour les voyageurs en provenance de pays où elle est endémique ;
  • Rougeole : depuis avril 2018, de nombreux cas de rougeole ont été recensés dans le pays. Le virus est extrêmement contagieux. Il est recommandé de s’assurer de l’état de ses vaccinations avec une attention particulière pour les enfants, adolescents et jeunes adultes (nés après 1980) ;
  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Chikungunya : en cas d’épidémie ou de séjour prolongé ;

Hépatite A

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Health — Foreign Office

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Call 999 or 114 and ask for an ambulance.

Contact your insurance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before you travel:

  • check the latest vaccine recommendations for Mauritius
  • see where to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

See what health risks you’ll face on Mauritius , including:

  • dengue
  • Schistosomiasis
  • Chikungunya

Stonefish stings are rare but can be fatal. Get urgent medical attention if you are stung. Many hotels stock anti-venom serum.

Medication

The legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can be different in other countries.

Read best practice when travelling with medicines on TravelHealthPro .

You can bring common medicines for your own use but you must carry a copy of the prescription. Tranquillisers, hypnotics, narcotics and other strong painkillers will require prior authorisation. You can check details with the Mauritius Ministry of Health and Wellness . If in any doubt, get advice from the Mauritius High Commission in the UK .

Healthcare in Mauritius

Good private healthcare is available but can be expensive. More complex cases may require evacuation to Réunion or South Africa. Make sure you have adequate travel health insurance and accessible funds to cover the cost of any medical treatment abroad and repatriation.

Private and state ambulance services are available, but the quality and response speed can vary. If you can, go directly to the hospital.

FCDO has a list of medical providers in Mauritius where most staff will speak English.

In brief
  • All of Mauritius is considered a normal vigilance zone, but travellers should monitor weather conditions between November and April due to cyclone season.
  • In case of a cyclone alert, travellers must have bottled water, candles, batteries, a battery-powered radio, torches, gas bottles, and canned food readily available.
  • Violent and unprovoked assaults are increasing, so travellers should remain vigilant everywhere, not just in tourist areas, and avoid displaying wealth.
  • Travellers should leave valuables and travel documents in a safe place, carrying photocopies instead, and avoid walking alone at night in deserted areas.
  • Drug possession and consumption are strictly forbidden and severely punished in Mauritius, with zero tolerance and potential prison sentences and heavy fines.
  • Travellers should exercise extreme caution with water sports, as some providers lack insurance and safety equipment, and strong currents can cause drownings.

via le site Internet Mauritius Meteorological Services (en anglais) ;

par téléphone via le service Telmet (numéro d’appel 8996 depuis un fixe et 171 depuis un portable) et le centre d’appels de Mauritius Telecom (joignable au 150) ;

Localised demonstrations and community unrest

Localised demonstrations and community unrest have occurred in parts of Mauritius following a police shooting incident on 9 October 2026, and may continue. This may result in road closures, transport disruption and interruptions to public services.

The Government of Mauritius has introduced temporary curfews during the evening and overnight, covering most areas of the main island. The next curfew is currently scheduled to take place from 8.30pm on Thursday 15 October to 5am on Friday 16 October. Follow guidance from local authorities to stay up to date on timings.

Avoid demonstrations and large public gatherings, stay indoors during curfew and follow the advice of local authorities.

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Mauritius

Although there’s no recent history of terrorism in Mauritius, attacks cannot be ruled out.

Crime

Most crime is non-violent such as burglaries from tourist villas or theft of unattended bags. Petty crime is common, particularly in tourist areas such as Port Louis, Grand Baie and Flic en Flac. There have been some reports of sexual assaults on tourists.

Protecting yourself and your belongings

You can take steps to reduce your personal risk by:

  • making sure your hotel room or accommodation is secure
  • keeping important documents such as your passport in a hotel safe
  • not walking alone at night on beaches or in poorly lit areas of town, particularly in the backstreets of the business district of Port Louis
  • only renting accommodation that is registered with the Mauritius Tourism Authority
  • not doing business with street or beach vendors

Report any incidents to the Mauritius tourist police by calling 999.

Personal ID

Police may occasionally ask to see your ID, such as your passport or driving licence.

Cigarette paper

It’s illegal to possess or import cigarette papers.

Illegal drugs

Illegal drugs, including cannabis, carry severe penalties. Pack all luggage yourself and do not carry anything through customs for anyone else.

You should expect a long jail sentence and heavy fines for possessing, using or smuggling illegal drugs, including when transiting through the airport.

Airports in Mauritius have excellent technology and security for detecting illegal items. This is also used to scan the baggage of transiting passengers.

If you are found with any drugs, it’s unlikely you’ll be bailed, regardless of the type of drug. Prosecutions take a year or more to come to court, and you’ll be detained until your trial.

Police investigations

If you’re under police investigation, you’ll be provisionally charged and not allowed to leave the country without consent from a judge. It can take up to 2 years for the authorities to decide whether to issue a formal charge. You’re not allowed to renew your occupation or resident’s permit if you’re provisionally charged with a crime. If you cannot support yourself financially you’ll be kept in prison while the police finish their investigation.

LGBT+ travellers

Same-sex sexual activity was decriminalised in October 2023. Mauritius is a relatively conservative society and local attitudes to the LGBT+ community vary across the country. LGBT+ people still face discrimination, and verbal and physical confrontation cannot be ruled out.

Read more advice for LGBT+ travellers .

Water sports

If you’re taking part in any kind of water sports , make sure the:

  • operator holds a valid permit issued by the Ministry of Tourism
  • boat has enough life jackets on board
  • captain can contact the coastguard if needed

Attention cependant :

  • Si l’adresse de résidence figurant au dos de votre CNIS n’est pas située à la Réunion, il convient d’attester du lieu de résidence actuel par tout autre justificatif ;
  • Il convient de remplir les conditions d’immigration habituelles (présentation d’un billet d’avion aller-retour, d’une assurance voyage, de ressources suffisantes et d’une réservation d’hôtel ou d’hébergement) ;

  • par téléphone au +230 466 66 62 ou au +230 454 10 16/17 ;
  • sur leur site Internet ;

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Mauritius’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Mauritius set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Mauritius High Commission in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

Your passport must:

  • be valid for the duration of your stay
  • have one blank page

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

You can visit Mauritius without a visa for up to 60 days. When you arrive, a border official will stamp your passport to show the end-date for your permitted stay.

You must be able to show proof of onward or return travel.

To stay longer (to work or study, for business travel or for other reasons), you must meet the Mauritian government’s entry requirements .

Digital travel form

You must fill in the Mauritius All in One travel form online before you arrive. Print out a copy of your completed form with a QR code on it. You’ll need to show the form to officials when you arrive at the airport. If you do not fill in the form before you arrive, you’ll be asked to fill in an immigration disembarkation card at the airport.

Vaccine requirements

For details about health entry requirements and recommended vaccinations see TravelHealthPro’s Mauritius guide .

Travelling from Reunion Island to Mauritius

On arrival in Mauritius, you may be asked questions about your health and recent travel history.

Health screening

If you travel to Mauritius from a country where malaria is common, border officials may ask you for a blood sample to meet Ministry of Health requirements. If you are not tested at the airport, officials may contact you later during your visit.

Ebola

As a precautionary measure, Mauritius has introduced entry restrictions in response to the Ebola outbreak:

  • Non-Mauritian nationals that have travelled from Democratic Republic of Congo or South Sudan within the preceding 21 days and that do not hold a valid work permit, residence permit, occupation permit, business, or student visa are not allowed to enter Mauritius
  • Mauritian nationals, and non-Mauritians holding a valid work permit, residence permit, occupation permit, business visa or student visa who have travelled from, transited through, or been present in Democratic Republic of Congo or South Sudan within the preceding 21 days will be permitted entry but will be subject to a 21-day mandatory quarantine
Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Mauritius . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

What are the entry requirements for Mauritius with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): French nationals staying less than three months in Mauritius do not need a visa, but require a passport valid for the entire stay and a return ticket. Financial capacity of 100 USD per day and proof of accommodation may be requested upon arrival in Mauritius. Interns and trainees must obtain a visa before travelling to Mauritius, regardless of the duration of their internship.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British citizens must ensure their passport is valid for their entire stay and has one blank page; entry will be denied without a valid document. • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.

  • When the local facility is not enough, Maximum's medical team decides the evacuation to a suitable centre, and pays for it (art. 6.2.2).

Mauritius: safety, in figures?

2.3 homicides per 100,000 people (2022) versus 0.6 in Switzerland and 1.3 in France.

  • 12.2 road deaths per 100,000 people versus 2.2 in Switzerland (World Bank, WHO).
  • The homicide rate is 4 times Switzerland's: violence is a real risk there, concentrated in the areas named by the official advisories. On the road, 6 times more deaths than in Switzerland: road crashes are the leading cause of death of healthy travellers (CDC) — seat belt, no night driving, a driver or a taxi from a rank.
