How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

Recommended vaccines and medicines11

Routine vaccinesCDC ↗

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include Chickenpox (Varicella) Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (DTaP, Tdap, or Td) Flu (influenza) Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) Polio Shingles

MeaslesCDC ↗

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

PolioCDC ↗

In Algeria, poliovirus has been identified in the past year. Travelers to Algeria are at increased risk of exposure to poliovirus.

RabiesCDC ↗

Dogs infected with rabies are commonly found in Algeria. If rabies exposures occur while in Algeria, rabies vaccines may only be available in larger suburban/urban medical facilities.

TyphoidCDC ↗

Recommended for most travelers. Typhoid vaccine is not 100% effective. Practicing safe food and water habits , including washing hands at key times , can also help prevent typhoid fever .

Yellow FeverCDC ↗

CDC recommendations: Vaccine is not recommended. Country entry requirements: Direct travel from United States: Vaccine is not required. FDFA (Switzerland) — medical care, in French

  • Fièvre jaune : obligatoire pour les voyageurs en provenance d'un pays à risque de transmission ;
  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Tuberculose : chez les enfants de moins de 15 ans en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;

Hépatite A

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Call 16 or 1021 and ask for an ambulance.

Contact your insurance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

  • check the latest vaccine recommendations for Algeria

Updated 24.08.2026

Exercise increased caution in Algeria due to terrorism and kidnapping . Some areas have increased risk. Read the entire Travel Advisory.

Terrorism remains a possible threat in Algeria. Terrorist attacks have historically targeted Algerian security forces. Attacks are possible in both rural and urban areas despite a heavy and active police presence. Kidnapping for ransom events in Algeria’s deep south have targeted foreigners in recent years.

The U.S. government has limited ability to offer emergency services to U.S. citizens outside Algiers province. This is due to the size of the country, as well as the Algerian government’s travel restrictions on U.S. government employees.

Terrorism

There is risk of terrorist violence, including terrorist attacks and other activity in Algeria. Visit the U.S. Department of State's country reports on terrorism to learn more.

  • Review our information on Terrorism and Travel to High-Risk Areas.

Kidnapping and hostage taking

  • Foreigners may be targeted for kidnapping or hostage taking by criminals and terrorists in Algeria. This is most likely to occur in the southern desert regions near the borders with Mali, Niger, or Libya and areas near migration networks.

Do Not Travel to:

  • Areas near the eastern, and southern borders, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, Illiz, In Guezzsam, In Salah, Tamanrasset, the mountainous areas of the Wilaya of Tebessa, and Tindouf due to terrorism and kidnapping.
  • Remote areas in the Sahara Desert without the support of an organized tour group due to terrorism and kidnapping.

  • suivez les instructions des autorités locales;
  • suivez attentivement l'évolution de la situation sécuritaire avant et pendant le voyage;
  • tenez-vous à l'écart des rassemblements de foule et des manifestations de tout genre;
  • confiez l'organisation de votre voyage à une personne de confiance locale; faites-vous accompagner;
  • demandez à être pris en charge à l'aéroport et conduit à l'hôtel;

  • soyez particulièrement vigilant dans les grandes villes, surtout la nuit;
  • déposez vos documents (pièces d'identité, billet d'avion, etc.) dans le coffre-fort de l'hôtel;
  • ne portez pas d'objets de valeur (montres, bijoux, etc.) et n'ayez que peu d'argent sur vous;

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Algeria

Terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Algeria.

Terrorist attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreign nationals, such as:

  • transport hubs
  • locations popular with tourists and foreigners
  • government buildings
  • crowded places
  • businesses with western interests

There is also a risk that lone actors target foreign nationals. Stay aware of your surroundings, keep up to date with local media reports and follow the advice of local authorities.

The threat from terrorism is higher in some parts of the country, including:

  • the southern border, where the kidnap risk is concentrated
  • the Libyan and Tunisian borders
  • rural, and in particular mountainous, areas in the north and between Tunisia and Algiers
  • the Sahara

The terrorist threat comes from individuals inspired by Islamist extremist and anti-Semitic ideology and established groups, such as Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb ( AQIM ). These groups have been active across the country and likely consider Western nationals legitimate targets.

The Algerian authorities conduct effective counter-terrorism operations and retain a strong, visible security presence across the country.

Terrorist kidnap

There is a threat of kidnapping by groups operating in North Africa, particularly from Libya, Mauritania and groups originating in the Sahel. This includes AQIM and Daesh-affiliated groups, who may travel across the region’s porous border. There is a heightened risk of kidnap in border and remote desert areas of North Africa, particularly in the southern and eastern border areas (bordering Mali and Libya respectively). Terrorist groups have kidnapped foreigners, government officials and civilians in the region for financial gain and for political leverage.

British nationals are seen as legitimate targets, including tourists, humanitarian aid workers, journalists and business travellers. If you are kidnapped, the reason for your presence is unlikely to protect you or secure your safe release.

The long-standing policy of the British government is to not make substantive concessions to hostage takers. The British government considers that paying ransoms and releasing prisoners increases the risk of further hostage taking. The Terrorism Act (2000) also makes payments to terrorists illegal.

Political situation

Algeria has a visible security presence across the country that gives considerable attention to the safety of its visitors. Demonstrations and other forms of protest are subject to various restrictions. You should take precautions for your personal safety by avoiding political gatherings and demonstrations. Follow instructions given by local security authorities.

Algeria-Morocco border

The land border between Algeria and Morocco is closed. Do not attempt to cross it.

Risk of arrest and detention

The Algerian authorities do not always inform the British Embassy when British nationals have been arrested. If you are detained, insist on your right to contact the British Embassy.

It can take time for the British Embassy to get the necessary permission to visit you.

Advisory summary

Drugs

Penalties for possession, use or trafficking of illegal drugs are severe. Convicted offenders can expect a jail sentence and a heavy fine.

Alcohol

The consumption of alcohol in public is illegal. Avoid drinking alcohol outside licensed premises. Drugs, alcohol and travel

2SLGBTQI+ persons

Convicted offenders could face up to 3 years of imprisonment and heavy fines. 2SLGBTQI+ persons should carefully consider the risks of travelling to Algeria. Travel and your sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics

Death penalty

Although capital punishment has not been applied since 1993, you may still face the death penalty if you’re found guilty of serious offences.

Dress and behaviour

Algerian customs, laws and regulations adhere closely to Islamic practices and beliefs. Public displays of affection, including holding hands and kissing, are not socially accepted. Foreign female travellers are not expected to wear head covers. However, revealing clothing is considered inappropriate. To avoid offending local sensitivities:

  • dress conservatively
  • behave discreetly
  • respect religious and social traditions
  • seek permission from locals before photographing them
Ramadan

In 2027, the lunar month of Ramadan is expected to begin on or around February 7. In public, between sunrise and sunset, be discreet when:

  • drinking
  • eating
  • smoking
Religious proselytism

Religious proselytism is illegal. You should avoid engaging in religious activities that contradict or challenge Islamic teachings and values. This includes preaching, possessing, or distributing religious literature or material.

Mandatory military service

Algerian men over the age of 19 are subject to mandatory military service. Local authorities may prevent you from leaving the country if you’re a dual Canadian-Algerian citizen and are unable to produce either:

  • a deferment card exempting you from military service
  • a certificate of census registration
  • evidence that you have completed your military service

Obtain a document certifying your status from the Embassy of Algeria before travel.

Family law

Algerian family law is different from Canadian family law. Decisions are based on Islamic law. Children of an Algerian father automatically acquire Algerian citizenship at birth. If you are involved in a custody dispute in Algeria, consult an Algerian lawyer for advice and assistance regarding your specific situation.

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. It does not apply between Canada and Algeria. If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Algeria by an abducting parent:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Algeria to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies. Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Identification

Local authorities may ask you to show identification at any time.

  • Carry photo identification at all times
  • Keep a photocopy of your passport and visa in a safe place, in case they are lost or confiscated
Photography

Photography of sensitive installations is prohibited. This includes:

  • military sites
  • government buildings
  • bridges

Seek permission before taking photos of official buildings and individuals.

Export of antiquities

Laws on purchasing and exporting antiquities and objects of particular significance to Algeria's cultural heritage are strict. Algerian antiquities and other cultural artifacts cannot be exported. Obtain and carry the required legal paperwork to purchase or export antiquities.

Personal ID

You will need your passport to check in to any hotels in Algeria. You do not have to carry your passport at all times, but take it with you on longer journeys. You must have your passport if you travel inside Algeria by air. Keep copies of your passport’s photo page and your visa or entry stamp in a separate place.

Ramadan

Ramadan is a holy month for Muslims. The dates vary by year and country, next starting in February 2027. During this time, do not:

  • eat, drink, smoke or chew gum in public in the daytime, including in your car
  • play loud music or dance
  • swear in public

Get more advice when you arrive from your tour guide, hotel or business contacts. You should also:

  • check opening hours of shops and restaurants
  • be aware that if hotels and restaurants are providing food or drink in fasting hours, they may separate you from Islamic guests, for example with screens
  • be aware that most restaurants do not serve alcohol
  • follow local dress codes – clothing that does not meet local dress codes may cause more offence at this time
  • be aware that fasting can cause tiredness, particularly during the later afternoon and early evening
  • be patient and show tolerance
Alcohol laws

It is illegal to drink or be under the influence of alcohol in a public place.

Illegal drugs and prison sentences

There is zero tolerance for drugs-related offences. The penalties for trafficking, smuggling, using and possessing illegal drugs are severe and can include the death penalty depending upon the severity of the offence.

Mobile phone coverage

Mobile phone coverage can be patchy or unavailable in more remote areas, particularly in the south of Algeria. Some online maps may not be accurate in remote areas.

Using cameras in secure areas

It is illegal to bring drones, binoculars, telescopes and certain types of photography equipment into Algeria without authorisation. If you have any doubt about items you plan to bring with you, contact the Algerian customs to check prior to your travel.

LGBT+ travellers

Sexual acts between people of the same sex are illegal in Algeria. Read more advice for LGBT+ travellers.

Family law and child custody

Algerian family law is different from UK law. Mothers cannot renew their children’s passports without written consent from the father. Fathers can renew their children’s passports without needing the mother’s consent. Algerian nationals, including dual-nationals, who enter the country on an Algerian passport, must leave the country on an Algerian passport, so if you are travelling with a child who has British-Algerian dual nationality, and you are unable to access a valid Algerian passport for them, you will not be able to bring the child out of Algeria without the father’s written consent or permission from the Algerian courts.

Military service

If you are a British male of Algerian origin, you may be liable for national service even if you have been living outside of Algeria. You can contact the Algerian consulate near you to check your status prior to travelling to Algeria.

  • un montant maximum équivalent à 7 500 (sept mille cinq cents) euros, prélevés d’un compte devises ouvert en Algérie ;

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Algeria’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Algeria set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Algerian Consulate in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

To enter Algeria, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual Citizenship .

If your passport is lost or stolen in Algeria

If your passport is lost or stolen during your stay, the Algerian authorities will ask for a police report when you leave the country.

Visa requirements

You must have a visa to visit Algeria.

Check your visa details, including validity dates, before you travel. If you overstay, it is likely Algerian immigration police will detain you at the airport on departure. You may face criminal prosecution and up to 3 months in prison.

If you want to extend your stay in Algeria, apply at the town hall (‘la wilaya’) nearest to you.

Applying for a visa

Before you travel, apply for a visa through the Algerian Consulate in the UK .

You may be able to get a tourist visa on arrival at some airports in Algeria if the majority of your travel is in the south of the country. You should have a confirmed reservation with an approved local travel agency. Contact the Algerian Consulate in the UK for more information and for details of approved travel agencies.

Vaccine requirements

To enter Algeria, you must have a certificate to prove you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination if you’re coming from a country listed as a transmission risk .

For full details about medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, see TravelHealthPro’s Algeria guide .

Travelling with children

In Algeria, a child is:

- someone under the age of 19 years and one day

- considered to be an Algerian citizen if one of their parents is Algerian

If an Algerian citizen or a British-Algerian dual national child travels with one parent, the parent (whether mother or father) must prove their parental link through a ‘Livret de famille’ (original or certified copy).

Algerian children travelling alone must have a letter (‘Autorisation Parentale’) from their parent or legal guardian giving them permission to leave the country. Children not from Algeria travelling alone need to show proof of permanent residence in the country they are travelling to.

For further information, check the website of the Algerian Ministry of Interior or contact the Algerian Consulate in London .

Transport and infrastructure

What should I do if hospitalised in Algeria?

Is an Amex, Visa or Mastercard enough in Algeria?

At today's level 1/4, card by card:

  • Amex Platinum — No area exclusion at this level — but three written limits: deductible and prior approval, 90-day cap, advance under conditions.
  • Visa — No express area exclusion — but a €156,000 cap, 90 days, and the war/instability exclusion in the background.
  • Mastercard — No exclusion in play at this level — but a €155,000 cap and 90 covered days.
  • Three lines to read in your notice: the duration (often 90 days per trip), the settlement (reimbursement afterwards or direct payment of the hospital) and the area exclusion at level 4/4.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Algeria?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — No area exclusion at this level — compare cap, deductible and covered duration.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.
  • Have your IPID number or the PDF of the terms and ask an expert to call you back: the answer is in the document, not in the brochure.

Can I be treated in Algeria, or will I be evacuated?

1.7 physicians per 1,000 people (2022) versus 4.5 in Switzerland.

  • 1.6 hospital beds per 1,000 people versus 4.4 in Switzerland (World Bank).
  • With 1.7 physicians per 1,000 people (62% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover. Health spending of 233 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.
  • When the local facility is not enough, Maximum's medical team decides the evacuation to a suitable centre, and pays for it (art. 6.2.2).

  • 20.9 road deaths per 100,000 people versus 2.2 in Switzerland (World Bank, WHO).
  • The homicide rate is above Switzerland's, without being out of range. On the road, 9 times more deaths than in Switzerland: road crashes are the leading cause of death of healthy travellers (CDC) — seat belt, no night driving, a driver or a taxi from a rank.
