How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief

Exercise Increased Caution in New Caledonia due to risk of crime.

Advisory summary

Exercise increased caution in New Caledonia.

Review our travel guidance for New Caledonia to learn how to prepare for a safe trip.

Exercise increased caution in Areas Outside Noumea at night due to crime.

Due to the civil unrest in 2024, an increased police and military presence remains around the country.

  • Political demonstrations and protests may turn violent with little notice. Demonstrations may disrupt transportation and other essential services.
  • There may be language barriers in calling emergency services, potentially causing delays.
  • Medical services for routine and emergency procedures are generally available in Noumea, but limited outside of the city. Review the Health section of the Travel Guidance on this page for more information.
  • The U.S. government is extremely limited in its ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in New Caledonia. Help on site is available only from local authorities.

If you decide to travel to New Caledonia:

  • Enroll in the  Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to get important updates and alerts from the U.S. embassy or consulate. Enrolling helps the U.S. embassy or consulate contact you or your emergency contact in an emergency.
  • Review the Country Security Report for New Caledonia.
  • Avoid demonstrations and crowds.
  • Check local media for breaking news. Be prepared to adjust your plans.
  • Review our information on Crime Abroad and for Victims of Crime .
  • Visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention CDC website for the latest  Travel Health Information for New Caledonia.
  • Whether you’re a first time or frequent traveler, use the International Travel Checklist .
  • We highly recommend that you buy travel insurance before you travel. Check with your travel insurance provider about evacuation assistance, medical insurance, and trip cancelation coverage.
  • Have a plan to leave in an emergency that does not depend on U.S. government help. Review our information on Crisis and Evacuations .

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of New Caledonia’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

New Caledonia is an Overseas Territory of France (‘Territoire d’Outre-Mer’). The authorities in New Caledonia set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the French Consulate General in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

Your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the date you plan to leave New Caledonia and have at least 2 blank pages.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

You can visit New Caledonia without a visa for up to 90 days for tourism or business. To stay longer, to work or study, for business travel or for other reasons, check the visa application process and timelines on the French visa website.

UK residents of New Caledonia

Carry your residence document, as well as your passport, when entering or exiting New Caledonia. If you’ve applied but not yet received your document, carry your certificate of application. You will have received this as an email.

Vaccine requirements

You must have a certificate to prove you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination if you’re coming from a country listed as a transmission risk .

For full details about medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, see TravelHealthPro’s New Caledonia guide .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of New Caledonia (in French). You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Taking money into New Caledonia

Check what cash and valuables you need to declare to bring them into New Caledonia.
