How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult your GP or an international travel health clinic to assess health risks and receive vaccination advice before departure; also consider a dental check-up. France Diplomatie
  • Pack a personal pharmacy with original, labelled medications and a prescription in international non-proprietary names; verify legality in destination country and never use street-bought drugs. France Diplomatie
  • Ensure routine French vaccinations (diphtheria, tetanus, polio, whooping cough, measles) are up to date; consider additional vaccines (Hepatitis A, typhoid, Hepatitis B, rabies) depending on travel conditions. France Diplomatie
  • Prevent typhoid by drinking safe water, eating well-cooked food, washing hands, and considering vaccination; symptoms appear about 3 weeks after exposure. France Diplomatie
  • Avoid contact with animals and consider pre-exposure rabies vaccination for children and rural travel; seek immediate medical care after any animal bite or scratch. France Diplomatie
  • Outside major cities, hospitals require upfront payment; bring sufficient medication and check national regulations for controlled substances before travel. DFAE

  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in North Macedonia

Terrorist attacks in North Macedonia cannot be ruled out.

Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreign nationals. Stay aware of your surroundings and keep up to date with local media reports and follow advice of the local authorities.

The authorities in North Macedonia have carried out raids against suspected terrorists. There’s a risk of terrorist attacks inspired by extremist ideology in North Macedonia.

Political situation

Occasionally there are protests which can cause disruption. Check local media for the latest information, be vigilant and avoid large crowds and gatherings.

If there is civil disorder, stay indoors when possible, especially after dark, and avoid crowds and demonstrations.

Crime

Attacks against foreign nationals are extremely rare.

Organised crime groups are active, particularly in northern areas near the border with Kosovo.

There are occasional shooting incidents, including in Skopje, but they are not targeted at foreign nationals. People sometimes fire guns when celebrating.

Protecting your belongings

There have been several cases of pickpocketing by gangs of children and bag snatching in the main shopping and entertainment areas late at night. Foreign nationals appear to have been specifically targeted. Make sure your personal possessions are secure.

Keep your passport in a safe place and carry a copy of the photo page for identification. If it is lost or stolen, report it to the local police and cancel your passport immediately .

Illegal drugs

Illegal drugs, including cannabis, carry severe penalties. You should expect a long jail sentence and heavy fines for possessing, using or smuggling illegal drugs, including when transiting through the airport.

Airports in North Macedonia have excellent technology and security for detecting illegal items. This is also used to scan the baggage of transiting passengers.

Using cameras in secure areas

It is illegal to take photographs of any military installation or site of government or strategic importance.

LGBT+ travellers

Same-sex sexual relationships are legal, but people in North Macedonia are not particularly open about them. LGBT+ bars and restaurants are not common. Read more advice for LGBT+ travellers .

Money

British banks do not exchange Macedonian denars, so exchange any unwanted denars before you leave. You should only change money through banks or official exchanges and not through street dealers. You will not be able to exchange Scottish or Northern Irish banknotes.

Road travel

If you are planning to drive in North Macedonia, see information on driving abroad and check the rules of the road in the RAC’s North Macedonia guide . The guide lists driving regulations and other legal requirements you need to be aware of. You can get fines for:

  • not using side lights or dipped headlights, including during the day
  • using a mobile phone while driving
  • not wearing a seatbelt, as both a driver and a passenger
  • not having all the required safety equipment, including snow chains…

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. The convention applies between Canada and North Macedonia. If you are in this situation:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • contact the Central Authority for your province or territory of residence for information on starting an application under The Hague Convention
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in North Macedonia to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children's Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies. Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Cultural heritage and antiquities

There are strict laws regarding the purchase and exportation of antiquities and objects of special significance to the country's cultural heritage. To avoid any difficulties:

  • verify with the Cultural Heritage Protection Office and the customs administration if items are subject to particular restrictions and requirements
  • make sure you obtain and carry the required legal paperwork to purchase or export such items

  • French nationals may enter North Macedonia with a passport valid for at least 6 months or a valid French national identity card for stays under 3 months without a visa. France Diplomatie

  • Overstaying the 3-month tourist limit risks a fine of approximately 200 euros, confiscation of travel documents, and a court appearance preventing departure until the matter is resolved. France Diplomatie
  • Minors under 18 travelling without both parents or legal guardians must carry a signed parental authorisation with a copy of the signatory’s valid ID. France Diplomatie
  • All travellers must register within 48 hours of arrival if staying with a private individual; hotels handle registration automatically. France Diplomatie

Visas

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of the current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in North Macedonia set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Macedonian Embassy in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

To enter North Macedonia, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 90 days after the date you arrive.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

You can visit North Macedonia for up to 3 months without a visa.

If you plan to stay for longer, contact the Macedonian Embassy .

Travelling with children

Before you travel, ask your airline if you need to complete any forms for children travelling:

  • alone
  • with only one parent
  • with an adult who is not their legal guardian

If you are travelling through (transiting) other countries, check travel advice for those countries for additional requirements.

UK refugee travel documents

If you hold a UK refugee travel document, you must have a visa to travel to North Macedonia. You also need a visa to travel through North Macedonia on your way to Kosovo. You can apply for a visa from the Macedonian Embassy in the UK .

Registering with the police

You must register with the local police in the town or city where you’re staying within 48 hours of your arrival in North Macedonia. If you’re staying in a hotel, staff will register you at check-in.

Keep the registration document with you until you leave North Macedonia. If you have registered with the police directly, you must de-register 24 hours before you leave the country. You can register with the police online (in Macedonian).

If you do not register, you may face:

  • a fine
  • detention and a court hearing
  • a restriction on returning to North Macedonia
Travelling to Serbia

Serbia has sometimes denied entry to people leaving North Macedonia with passport stamps from Kosovo.

Vaccine requirements

For details about medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, see TravelHealthPro’s North Macedonia guide .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of North Macedonia . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Taking money into North Macedonia

Declare foreign currency if the value is 10,000 euros or more when you enter North Macedonia. If you do not, customs officers may detain you and seize the cash when you try to leave.

Transport and infrastructure

What are the entry requirements for North Macedonia with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): French nationals may enter North Macedonia with a passport valid for at least 6 months or a valid French national identity card for stays under 3 months without a visa. To avoid refusal at the border, travellers should use a passport rather than an identity card with an expired validity date, even if French authorities consider it still valid. Overstaying the 3-month tourist limit risks a fine of approximately 200 euros, confiscation of travel documents, and a court appearance preventing departure until the matter is resolved.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British citizens must ensure their passport has at least 90 days validity beyond the arrival date in North Macedonia; otherwise entry will be denied. British nationals can visit North Macedonia visa-free for up to 3 months; for longer stays, contact the Macedonian Embassy in the UK. • Attach it to the visa file; if in doubt about the format, write to us.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in North Macedonia?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — No area exclusion at this level — compare cap, deductible and covered duration.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.
  • Have your IPID number or the PDF of the terms and ask an expert to call you back: the answer is in the document, not in the brochure.

Can I be treated in North Macedonia, or will I be evacuated?

2.9 physicians per 1,000 people (2022) versus 4.5 in Switzerland.

  • 4.7 hospital beds per 1,000 people versus 4.4 in Switzerland (World Bank).
  • With 2.9 physicians per 1,000 people (36% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover. Health spending of 639 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.
  • When the local facility is not enough, Maximum's medical team decides the evacuation to a suitable centre, and pays for it (art. 6.2.2).

North Macedonia: safety, in figures?

  • 5.1 road deaths per 100,000 people versus 2.2 in Switzerland (World Bank, WHO).
  • The homicide rate is above Switzerland's, without being out of range. On the road, 2 times more deaths than in Switzerland: road crashes are the leading cause of death of healthy travellers (CDC) — seat belt, no night driving, a driver or a taxi from a rank.
