How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

Recommended vaccines and medicines10

Routine vaccinesCDC ↗

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include Chickenpox (Varicella) Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (DTaP, Tdap, or Td) Flu (influenza) Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) Polio Shingles

COVID-19CDC ↗

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines. Please see  Your COVID-19 Vaccination  for more information.

Hepatitis ACDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Lithuania. Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series. Travelers allergic to a vaccine component should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.

Hepatitis BCDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers of all ages traveling to Lithuania.

MeaslesCDC ↗

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

MonkeypoxCDC ↗

Monkeypox vaccination is recommended for any adult who anticipates any of the following activities during travel: Sexual or intimate contact with a new partner Sexual or intimate contact at a commercial sex venue, like a sex club or bathhouse Sexual or intimate contact in exchange for money, goods, drugs, or other trade Sexual or intimate contact in association with a large public event, such as a rave, party, or…

RabiesCDC ↗

Dogs infected with rabies are not commonly found in Lithuania. If rabies exposures occur while in Lithuania, rabies vaccines are typically available throughout most of the country.

Tick-borne EncephalitisCDC ↗

For travelers moving or traveling to TBE-endemic areas TBE vaccine is recommended for persons who will have extensive exposure to ticks based on their planned outdoor activities and itinerary. TBE vaccine may be considered for persons who might engage in outdoor activities in areas ticks are likely to be found.

TyphoidCDC ↗

Most travelers to Lithuania are likely at low risk of getting typhoid fever. Consider getting a typhoid vaccine if you plan to travel to areas with poor sanitation and unsafe water, including rural areas. Typhoid vaccine is not 100% effective. Practicing safe food and water habits , including washing hands at key times , also can help prevent typhoid fever .

Yellow FeverCDC ↗

CDC recommendations: Vaccine is not recommended. Country entry requirements: Vaccine is not required. Updated April 23, 2025

CDC Travelers' Health, re-read weekly — the recommendation depends on your age, vaccines and itinerary: confirm it with a doctor or a travel clinic 4 to 6 weeks before departure.CDC ↗read 10.10.2026

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • French nationals should consult their doctor or an international vaccination centre for health advice and vaccinations before travelling abroad.
  • Carry necessary medications in their original packaging with an international common name prescription, and verify their legality in the destination country.
  • Ensure all French vaccinations are up-to-date, particularly for diphtheria, tetanus, polio, and measles, as a vaccination record may be requested.
  • Consider additional vaccinations like Hepatitis A, Typhoid fever, Rabies, or Tick-borne encephalitis based on travel conditions and duration.
  • British nationals travelling to Lithuania require a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for medically necessary state healthcare.
  • Swiss nationals should carry sufficient medication and inquire about special import permits for narcotics or psychotropic substances before departure.

  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Health — Foreign Office

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Dial 112 and ask for an ambulance.

Contact your insurance or medical assistance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

  • check the latest vaccine recommendations for Lithuania
  • see where to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

The legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can be different in other countries.

Read best practice when travelling with medicines on TravelHealthPro .

Healthcare in Lithuania

FCDO has a list of medical providers in Lithuania where some staff will speak English.

Health insurance cards

To get medically necessary state healthcare in Lithuania, you need a Global Health Insurance Card ( GHIC ) or a European Health Insurance Card ( EHIC ).

The NHS’s getting healthcare abroad webpage has details about:

  • how to apply for a GHIC
  • how to get temporary cover if you lose your card or it does not arrive in time
  • who qualifies for a new EHIC instead of a GHIC
  • what treatment counts as medically necessary

A GHIC or EHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance. You may have costs your GHIC or EHIC does not cover, including:

  • changes to travel and accommodation bookings
  • additional standard costs for treatment
  • medical repatriation to the UK
  • treatment that is ruled non-urgent
  • private healthcare
  • private clinics

In brief
  • Travel to Lithuania is generally considered safe, but tensions remain high due to Russia's ongoing military aggression against Ukraine.
  • An emergency has been declared nationwide, allowing military personnel to conduct legal searches of people and vehicles.
  • Be aware of potential terrorist attacks and stay informed about the current situation through media and local contacts.
  • Exercise caution near the border with Belarus, as the situation is tense and some border crossings may be temporarily closed.
  • Take precautions against petty crime, such as not carrying valuables openly and keeping copies of identification documents.
  • Drivers must use reflectors in poor visibility and at night; do not sign documents you do not understand after an accident.

Safety — Foreign Office

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Lithuania

Terrorist attacks in Lithuania cannot be ruled out.

Protecting your belongings

Petty crime is common. To reduce your risk:

  • beware of pickpockets in busy locations and on public transport
  • avoid unlit streets and parks at night
  • be cautious if you’re walking alone
  • do not leave coats and handbags unattended in bars, pubs and clubs
Drink and food spiking

There have been instances of drink spiking in Vilnius and at festivals and events elsewhere in Lithuania. Do not leave drinks unattended and be wary of accepting food and drink from strangers in bars, nightclubs and restaurants.

Illegal drugs

Illegal drugs, including cannabis, are strictly prohibited, even in very small quantities. Severe penalties apply for possessing, using, buying, or smuggling illegal drugs, including when transiting through airports. You should expect long jail sentences of up to 10 years and heavy fines.

Airports in Lithuania have excellent technology and security for detecting illegal items. This is also used to scan the baggage of transiting passengers.

LGBT+ travellers

While there are some LGBT+ friendly venues in larger cities, small towns and rural areas can be less accepting of LGBT+ travellers.

Same-sex relationships are legal and same-sex partners can live together, but same-sex marriages and civil partnerships are not recognised under Lithuanian law.

Read more advice for LGBT+ travellers .

Road travel

If you are planning to drive in Lithuania, see information on driving abroad and check the rules of the road in the RAC’s Lithuania guide . The guide lists driving regulations and other requirements that you need to be aware of.

You can use a UK photocard driving licence to drive in Lithuania. Make sure it has the correct name and address. Renew or update your licence if necessary.

If you still have a paper driving licence, you may need to update it to a photocard licence or get the correct version of the international driving permit ( IDP ) as well.

Hire car companies often have stricter requirements for their customers, such as a year of driving experience and a higher minimum age.

Drink-driving is a serious offence in Lithuania, and the legal limits are stricter than in the UK . If you are tested and have over the legal limit for alcohol in your system, you may face a heavy fine and imprisonment.

Check if you need a UK sticker to drive your car outside the UK .

Taxis

It is safer to use a recognised taxi app or to phone for a registered taxi that uses a meter. Make sure the meter is switched on to avoid arguments about the fare.

Drone activity

Some Ukrainian drones aimed at Russia have crossed into Lithuanian airspace. Follow official guidance as necessary.

Curonian Spit, Klaipeda

The Spit, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is divided between Lithuania and Russia – the northern half is in Lithuania and the southern half is part of Kaliningrad, Russia. Visitors should be aware that the walk along the Curonian Spit in Lithuanian territory will eventually reach Russian territory. See Russia travel advice…

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. The convention applies between Canada and Lithuania. If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Lithuania, and if the applicable conditions are met, you may apply for the return of your child to the Lithuanian court. If you are in this situation:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • contact the Central Authority for your province or territory of residence for information on starting an application under The Hague Convention
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Lithuania to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children's Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies. Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Mandatory military service

Male Lithuanian citizens between the ages of 18 to 23 may be subject to mandatory military service. Local authorities may prevent you from leaving the country if you’re a dual Canadian-Lithuania citizen and you are conscripted into military service. Military Service – Lithuanian Armed Forces

Drones

Lithuanian and European laws regulate recreational and commercial drone operation. You must register as a drone operator and apply for authorisation with the Lithuanian authorities. Depending on the size of your drone and the intended use, you may also need to take a proof of competency exam. Certain areas are restricted or off-limits for personal drones. These include:

  • military sites
  • certain nature conservation areas
  • within 5 km of airports

If you don’t comply with these laws, your drone could be confiscated and you could face heavy fines, arrest and detention. You could also be deported and banned from the entire Schengen area.

Export of religious items and antiquities

Lithuanian authorities strictly regulate the export of religious items or antiquities. If you purchase or acquire any such item while in Lithuania, confirm with the authorities if you are allowed to exit the country with it.

Reflective items

Pedestrians are required to wear small reflectors from dusk until dawn on unlit roads or along roads in rural areas. These are usually worn as vests or pinned to coats or bags.

Driving

You can drive in Lithuania with your valid Canadian driver’s licence for 90 days. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.04 percent for experienced drivers and 0.00 percent for new drivers, motorcyclists, taxi drivers and truck drivers. Penalties for drinking and driving are severe. If a police officer suspects you of drinking and driving, they could confiscate your driver's licence and your vehicle on the spot. If you’re convicted, you can expect heavy fines or jail sentences. The police are not required to respond to minor road accidents where there are no injuries to persons and both parties agree that police presence is not needed. In case of disagreement, do not move the vehicle(s) until the police arrive. Car insurance is mandatory. Border officials may request that you show them original documents. Money

The currency of Lithuania is the euro (EUR). If you are carrying €10,000 or more, or the equivalent in other currencies or monetary instruments, you must make a declaration to customs when you enter or leave the European Union. This does not apply if you are travelling within the European Union or in transit to a non-EU country. EU Cash Controls – European Commission

Visas

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of the current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Lithuania set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Lithuanian Embassy in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

Lithuania follows Schengen area rules . Your passport must:

- have a ‘date of issue’ less than 10 years before the date you arrive – if you renewed your passport before 1 October 2018, it might have a date of issue that is more than 10 years ago, making it invalid for entry to the Schengen area

- have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area (the expiry date does not need to be within 10 years of the date of issue)

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

You can travel without a visa to the Schengen area, which includes Lithuania, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This applies if you travel:

  • as a tourist
  • to visit family or friends
  • to attend business meetings, cultural or sports events
  • for short-term studies or training

The requirements for working in Lithuania are different.

If you’re travelling to other Schengen countries as well, make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day visa-free limit. Visits to Schengen countries in the 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days. If you overstay the 90-day visa-free limit, you may be banned from entering Schengen countries for up to 3 years.

At Lithuanian border control, you may need to:

  • show proof of your accommodation, for example, a hotel booking confirmation or proof of address for a second home
  • show proof of your travel insurance
  • show a return or onward ticket
  • prove that you have enough money for your stay – the amount varies depending on your accommodation
Staying longer than 90 days in a 180-day period

To stay longer, you must meet the Lithuanian government’s entry requirements. Check which type of visa or permit you need with the Lithuanian Embassy in the UK .

If you stay in Lithuania with a residence permit or long-stay visa, this does not count towards your 90-day visa-free limit.

Read about entry processes if you live in Lithuania .

New Schengen entry requirements

The European Union’s (EU) new Entry/Exit System (EES) is now being implemented across the Schengen area.

This means that when you travel into the Schengen area for short stays, you may need to register your biometric details, such as fingerprints and a photo. There is no cost for EES registration.

On your first visit into a Schengen country, you may be asked to register your details at a special booth before proceeding to the immigration…

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (EUR 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.
  • Attach it to the visa file; if in doubt about the format, write to us.

Is an Amex, Visa or Mastercard enough in Lithuania?

At today's level 1/4, card by card:

  • Amex Platinum — No area exclusion at this level — but three written limits: deductible and prior approval, 90-day cap, advance under conditions.
  • Visa — No express area exclusion — but a €156,000 cap, 90 days, and the war/instability exclusion in the background.
  • Mastercard — No exclusion in play at this level — but a €155,000 cap and 90 covered days.
  • Three lines to read in your notice: the duration (often 90 days per trip), the settlement (reimbursement afterwards or direct payment of the hospital) and the area exclusion at level 4/4.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Lithuania?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — No area exclusion at this level — compare cap, deductible and covered duration.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.
  • Have your IPID number or the PDF of the terms and ask an expert to call you back: the answer is in the document, not in the brochure.

  • Type your city, hotel or beach: the map re-centres, 24/7 emergency rooms come first.

Can I be treated in Lithuania, or will I be evacuated?

4.5 physicians per 1,000 people (2022) versus 4.5 in Switzerland.

  • 5.7 hospital beds per 1,000 people versus 4.4 in Switzerland (World Bank).
  • Medical density comparable to Switzerland: the local network handles most cases; repatriation remains a question of convalescence and cost. Health spending of 2,232 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.
  • When the local facility is not enough, Maximum's medical team decides the evacuation to a suitable centre, and pays for it (art. 6.2.2).

Lithuania: safety, in figures?

2.6 homicides per 100,000 people (2023) versus 0.6 in Switzerland and 1.3 in France.

  • 8.1 road deaths per 100,000 people versus 2.2 in Switzerland (World Bank, WHO).
  • The homicide rate is 4 times Switzerland's: violence is a real risk there, concentrated in the areas named by the official advisories. On the road, 4 times more deaths than in Switzerland: road crashes are the leading cause of death of healthy travellers (CDC) — seat belt, no night driving, a driver or a taxi from a rank.
