How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

Recommended vaccines and medicines9

Routine vaccinesCDC ↗

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include Chickenpox (Varicella) Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (DTaP, Tdap, or Td) Flu (influenza) Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) Polio Shingles

COVID-19CDC ↗

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines. Please see  Your COVID-19 Vaccination  for more information.

Hepatitis ACDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Fiji. Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series. Travelers allergic to a vaccine component should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.

Hepatitis BCDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers younger than 60 years old traveling to Fiji. Unvaccinated travelers 60 years and older may get vaccinated before traveling to Fiji.

MeaslesCDC ↗

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

MonkeypoxCDC ↗

Monkeypox vaccination is recommended for any adult who anticipates any of the following activities during travel: Sexual or intimate contact with a new partner Sexual or intimate contact at a commercial sex venue, like a sex club or bathhouse Sexual or intimate contact in exchange for money, goods, drugs, or other trade Sexual or intimate contact in association with a large public event, such as a rave, party, or…

RabiesCDC ↗

Dogs infected with rabies are not commonly found in Fiji. If rabies exposures occur while in Fiji, rabies vaccines may only be available in larger suburban/urban medical facilities.

TyphoidCDC ↗

Recommended for most travelers. Typhoid vaccine is not 100% effective. Practicing safe food and water habits , including washing hands at key times , can also help prevent typhoid fever .

Yellow FeverCDC ↗

CDC recommendations: Vaccine is not recommended. Country entry requirements: Direct travel from United States: Vaccine is not required. Travel from countries with risk for YF virus transmission: Vaccine is required for travelers ≥1 year old; this includes >12-hour airport transits or layovers in countries with risk for YF virus transmission. 3 Updated April 23, 2025 See footnotes

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult your doctor or an international vaccination centre before departure to assess your health and receive vaccination recommendations. France Diplomatie
  • Ensure you are up to date with French vaccination schedule, particularly against diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis, pertussis and measles; your vaccination record may be requested upon arrival. France Diplomatie
  • Carry only necessary medications in original packaging with original labels, accompanied by a prescription listing medicines in international non-proprietary names; verify they are authorised in your destination country. France Diplomatie
  • Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for travellers from endemic zones who have resided there within six days preceding travel, except transit passengers. France Diplomatie
  • Protect yourself against mosquito bites by wearing long clothing, applying repellent to exposed skin, using insecticide-treated nets, and eliminating standing water around your accommodation. France Diplomatie
  • Drink only bottled, boiled or treated water; avoid raw or undercooked fish, meat and poultry; do not consume non-pasteurised dairy products due to brucellosis risk in Fiji herds. France Diplomatie

  • Fièvre jaune : o bligatoire pour les voyageurs en provenance de zones d’endémie et y ayant résidé dans les six jours précédents (sauf pour les passagers en transit) ;
  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Chikungunya : en cas d’épidémie ou de séjour prolongé ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Health — Foreign Office

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Dial 911 and ask for an ambulance.

Contact your insurance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

  • check the latest vaccine recommendations for Fiji
  • see where to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

See what health risks you’ll face in Fiji including:

  • dengue
  • Zika virus
  • chikungunya
  • HIV/AIDS, and other sexually transmitted infections. For more information, see TravelHealthPro

Avertissement

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Fiji

Although there’s no recent history of terrorism in Fiji, attacks cannot be ruled out.

Protests and demonstrations

Protests can occur with little warning. Avoid demonstrations, rallies or street gatherings. Avoid any areas of obvious military or police activity.

Crime

The risk of serious crime is generally low, but there are occasional incidents including sexual assault.

Protecting your belongings

Be careful of your belongings in cities and other popular tourist destinations. To reduce the risk:

  • avoid carrying everything in one bag
  • carry a copy of the photo page of your passport and leave the original in a secure place
  • avoid leaving your belongings unattended
  • be alert when withdrawing money from cash machines
  • keep windows and doors locked when driving and belongings out of sight when parked
Sexual assault

Take additional care when walking at night in cities, towns and isolated areas, particularly if you are a woman travelling alone. There have been serious sexual assaults against foreign nationals in Fiji, including British women.

See advice for women travelling abroad .

Drink spiking and methanol poisoning

There has been an increase in cases of serious illness caused by alcoholic drinks containing methanol in popular travel destinations around the world.

Even small amounts of methanol can kill. It is not possible to identify methanol in alcoholic drinks by taste or smell. See Travel Aware Drink Spiking and Methanol Poisoning for information about how to reduce the risks.

Seek urgent medical attention if you or someone you are travelling with show the signs of methanol poisoning after drinking.

Scams

Be alert to the risk of credit card fraud. This may include credit card skimming devices or other types of data theft. Take care when paying with credit cards or withdrawing money from ATMs.

Mobile phone coverage

Phone coverage in rural areas and outlying islands can be limited or non-existent. Many UK mobile phones do not work, as your provider may not have an international roaming agreement in Fiji.

You can buy a Fiji SIM card at Nadi International Airport and at convenience stores and supermarkets. You must register your SIM card if you buy it locally.

Illegal drugs and prison sentences

Possession of even small quantities of illegal drugs can lead to imprisonment and a large fine. Possession of any amount of marijuana carries a 3-month prison sentence.

Kava-drinking ceremonies

Kava is a traditional drink in Fiji used in kava ceremonies. If you’re invited to take part in a kava-drinking ceremony, be aware of the potential risks of liver toxicity.

Nudity

Topless bathing and nudity in public is illegal. Cover your shoulders and knees in rural villages and during kava ceremonies.

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Fiji’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Fiji set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Fiji High Commission in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

Your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive in Fiji.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

You do not need a visa for visits of up to 4 months. If you plan to stay for longer than 4 months, apply for a visa from the Fiji Immigration Department .

At Fiji border control, you must also show:

  • an onward or return ticket
  • a valid visa for the next country you’re travelling to

If you’re visiting Fiji on business, you must apply for a business visitors permit , which is valid for 21 days.

Yacht entry

Yachts can only enter Fiji through Suva, Lautoka, Savusavu and Levuka. For other ports, such as Nadi and Denarau, you must have prior agreement from the Fijian authorities .

Travelling with children

If you are entering Fiji on a work or residency permit, and are travelling as a lone parent, you may need to have evidence of your parental responsibility. For further information contact the Fiji High Commission in the UK .

Vaccine requirements

To enter Fiji, you must have a certificate to prove you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination if you’re coming from a country listed as a transmission risk .

For full details about medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, see TravelHealthPro’s Fiji guide .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Fiji . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Fiji customs has strict quarantine regulations and customs officers X-ray all luggage arriving at Nadi airport. They will confiscate most fresh foodstuffs, unless you’re arriving from a country with quarantine agreements with Fiji.

Taking money into Fiji

Declare cash in any currency worth 10,000 Fijian dollars or more. If you are found with undeclared cash, you could be prosecuted and get a fine or a prison sentence.

Most tourist hotels and many restaurants accept credit cards. Not all ATMs accept the full range of bank or credit cards. The Australian and New Zealand Bank (ANZ) and Westpac ATMs accept cards with the Visa, Mastercard, Maestro and Cirrus symbols.

American passport — U.S. Department of State

The State Department publishes the requirements ("Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements") on its country page, which our servers cannot read. Read it before you go; as a guide, the French and British requirements below describe the same rules as seen by two other governments.travel.state.gov ↗updated 01.12.2024 · read 16.10.2026

FDFA (Switzerland) — transport and specific advice, in French

Transport and infrastructure

What is the official risk level in Fiji today?

Level 1/4 — Exercise Normal Precautions, U.S. Department of State, retrieved on 16 October 2026.

  • Is the whole country advised against? United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no (reading of 27 September 2026).
  • Contractually, only an FDFA, FOPH or WHO advisory against the trip opens Module A (art. 18.1) — that is not the case today.
  • Travel with international medical cover and the 24/7 number (+41 22 ••• •• ••) saved: here the risk is not the advisory, it is the hospital bill.

Is the whole of Fiji advised against, or only some areas?

An area advised against does not rule out the country.

  • Official answers: United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no.
  • Keep your country of residence's advisory on booking day and on departure day: that is what your policy's clauses cite.

What are the entry requirements for Fiji with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): French nationals need a passport valid for at least six months beyond visa expiry, proof of accommodation, tour operator details, and a return ticket to obtain a free tourist visa on arrival, valid up to four months. Travellers without a return ticket may face difficulties with immigration services at Nadi airport. Importing firearms, certain bladed weapons, meat, dairy products, seeds, plants, and pornographic material is prohibited.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date in Fiji. British citizens do not need a visa for stays up to four months; longer stays require a visa from the Fiji Immigration Department. You must present an onward or return ticket and a valid visa for your next destination at Fiji border control.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a Fiji visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (EUR 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.
  • Attach it to the visa file; if in doubt about the format, write to us.

Which laws and customs should I know in Fiji?

Local laws apply to every traveller; here is what the official texts say.

  • You must abide by local laws, and severe penalties, including jail sentences or heavy fines, apply to drug possession, use, or trafficking.
  • Possession of any amount of marijuana carries a mandatory three-month prison sentence, and undeclared currency over $5,000 FJD when entering or $10,000 FJD when exiting can lead to fines or prison.
  • Dress conservatively outside tourist areas, cover your shoulders and knees in rural villages and during kava ceremonies, and note that public nudity, including topless bathing, is illegal.
  • While same-sex sexual acts are not prohibited by Fijian law, homosexuality is not socially tolerated; avoid public displays of affection and be aware of gender-based violence.
  • Carry an International Driving Permit, as Fiji has a zero-tolerance policy for drinking and driving, and traffic drives on the left.

What Maximum knows

The 207 country pages — hospitals, pharmacies, police, embassies, emergency numbers, official advice from four governments, health, safety in figures, events in progress — read around the city you name. Your policy — benefits, the six steps, claims, articles. The site — prices, certificate, subscription. Nothing else: what it does not know, it says so and hands you to an adviser.
