How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • French nationals should consult their doctor or an international vaccination centre for health advice and to update vaccinations like diphtheria, tetanus, polio, and measles.
  • Carry necessary medications in their original packaging with an International Nonproprietary Name prescription, and verify their legality in the destination country.
  • British nationals should check destination healthcare, ensure adequate travel insurance for evacuation, and consult NHS travel vaccinations at least 8 weeks prior.
  • Swiss nationals needing regular medication should carry sufficient quantities, noting special import rules for narcotics or psychotropic substances.
  • For medically necessary state healthcare in Cyprus, British nationals require a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
  • Medical facilities outside major cities in some destinations may be insufficient; private hospitals are generally better equipped but require upfront payment.

Faithful summary of the official texts below, which prevail.

FDFA (Switzerland) — medical care, in French

Liens voyages

France Diplomatiesource ↗updated 15.09.2026 · read 16.10.2026

  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Health — Foreign Office

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Call 112 and ask for an ambulance.

Contact your insurance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

  • check the latest vaccine recommendations for Cyprus
  • see where to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

See what health risks you’ll face in Cyprus , including biting insects and ticks.

Medication

The legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can be different in other countries.

Read best practice when travelling with medicines on TravelHealthPro .

Healthcare in Cyprus

FCDO has a list of medical providers in Cyprus where some staff will speak English.

Health insurance cards

To get medically necessary state healthcare in Cyprus, you need a Global Health Insurance Card ( GHIC ) or a European Health Insurance Card ( EHIC ).

The NHS’s getting healthcare abroad webpage has details about:

  • how to apply for a GHIC
  • how to get temporary cover if you lose your card or it does not arrive in time
  • who qualifies for a new EHIC instead of a GHIC
  • what treatment counts as medically necessary

A GHIC or EHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance. You may have costs your GHIC or EHIC does not cover, including:

  • changes to travel and accommodation bookings
  • additional standard costs for treatment
  • medical repatriation to the UK
  • treatment that is ruled non-urgent
  • private healthcare
  • private clinics

There is also guidance on healthcare if you’re living in Cyprus .

In brief
  • Tensions in the Middle East may lead to restrictions on tourist travel, and sporadic social unrest could escalate to violence; avoid demonstrations and large gatherings.
  • The island is divided; the UN monitors the demarcation line, and minefields exist near the buffer zone, so use only well-traveled routes and heed local advice.
  • Terrorist attacks cannot be ruled out, and petty crime like pickpocketing and car break-ins occurs, especially in tourist areas; avoid unlit streets and isolated places.
  • Be cautious of drugs being administered in food, drinks, or cigarettes, and note that driving is on the left with unpredictable road behavior increasing accident risks.
  • Cyprus is in a seismic zone, and coastal areas could be affected by tsunamis; follow local authority instructions during forest fires, heavy rains, or floods.
  • In case of natural disasters, contact loved ones immediately and follow local authorities' instructions; contact the Swiss Embassy in Nicosia if foreign communications are disrupted.

Faithful summary of the official texts below, which prevail.

Terrorism in Cyprus

Terrorist attacks in Cyprus cannot be ruled out.

Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreign nationals.

Political demonstrations

Demonstrations may occur in cities with little or no notice. Events in the Middle East have led to heightened tensions and demonstrations are likely. Avoid any protests, political gatherings, or marches and leave the area if one develops. Local transport routes may be disrupted.

Crime

Crime against tourists is not common but take sensible precautions. Keep passports, money and other valuables safe.

Drink spiking

Personal attacks, including sexual assaults, are infrequent but do happen. Drug-assisted rape is a risk, including with drugs like GHB and liquid ecstasy. Buy your own drinks and always keep sight of them. Avoid splitting up from your friends.

Illegal drugs

Cyprus has a strictly enforced zero-tolerance policy towards illegal drugs, including laughing gas and cannabis.

You should expect severe penalties such as a long jail sentence and heavy fines for possessing, using or smuggling illegal drugs, including when transiting through the airport.

Airports in Cyprus have excellent technology and security for detecting illegal items. This is also used to scan the baggage of transiting passengers.

LGBT+ travellers

Same-sex sexual activity is legal in the Republic of Cyprus and civil partnerships are recognised. However, they may not be as widely accepted as in the UK. Same-sex sexual activity is also legal in the north of Cyprus, but not widely accepted.

Dual nationals and military service

If you are of Cypriot descent, even if you do not have a nationality card, authorities may consider you eligible for military service. If this happens, you could have difficulties when exiting Cyprus, and you might have to prove that you live outside Cyprus.

Customs

The Republic of Cyprus enforces restrictions and prohibition on the importation of certain items proceeding from the so-called “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus”. Real Estate

If you plan on purchasing or renting a property in the so-called “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus”, make sure you seek legal advice before committing to any transaction. Transactions may be illegal under the laws of the Republic of Cyprus since most of the properties belong to owners displaced in 1974 by Turkish military occupation. If you illegally rent or purchase one of these properties, you may face civil lawsuits from the legitimate owners and legal issues in the Republic of Cyprus. You should also avoid entering the Republic of Cyprus with advertisements or brochures promoting these properties. They could be used as evidence in a lawsuit.

Accommodations in the northern part

If you stay in a hotel or any other type of commercial accommodations in the so-called “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus”, you could face legal issues if the building or land lawfully belongs to owners displaced in 1974 by Turkish military occupation. Seek accommodation in establishments lawfully owned by Turkish Cypriots. Ownership status of hotels and other accommodation facilities - Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus

Compulsory military service

Canadians with dual citizenship or who are eligible for Cypriot citizenship may be subject to compulsory military service and other national obligations. Confirm this requirement before travelling to Cyprus.

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. The convention applies between Canada and Cyprus. If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Cyprus, and if the applicable conditions are met, you may apply for the return of your child to the Cypriot court. If you are in this situation:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • contact the Central Authority for your province or territory of residence for information on starting an application under The Hague Convention
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Cyprus to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children's Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies. Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Driving

You must be at least 18 years old to drive a vehicle in Cyprus. You can use your valid Canadian driver’s licence for up to 6 months. You should carry an international driving permit. Traffic drives on the left. Liability insurance is mandatory. Vehicle insurance purchased in the Republic of Cyprus is not valid in the so-called “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus”. You must have a separate insurance policy when driving in the northern part, including when driving rental cars.

Money

The currency of the Republic of Cyprus is the euro (EUR). The Turkish lira (TRY) is in circulation in the so-called “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus”. If you are carrying €10,000 or more, or the equivalent in other currencies or monetary instruments, you must make a declaration to customs when you enter or leave the European Union. Surrogacy

The British High Commission cannot get involved in surrogacy arrangements. The laws on surrogacy differ between the areas under the effective control of the Republic of Cyprus and the north of Cyprus.

Republic of Cyprus

Surrogacy is strictly limited to cases where a woman is medically unable to carry a pregnancy. In all cases, court approval is required before any treatment begins. No form of financial compensation for the surrogate is allowed. Prospective parents and clinics may face criminal charges if they proceed without the appropriate approvals in place.

The north of Cyprus

Pursuing surrogacy in the north carries risks as clinics are not regulated and there is no legal framework governing arrangements. Legal transfer of parenthood can be complex as the birth mother is given automatic parental responsibility. Obtaining birth certificates can also be complicated and may take a long time. The British High Commission’s ability to provide any assistance in the north of Cyprus is limited.

Surrogacy arrangements

Before entering into any surrogacy arrangements:

  • read FCDO and Home Office guidance on surrogacy overseas
  • fully research hospitals and clinics to ensure they are safe and reputable
  • seek specialist legal advice both in the UK and in Cyprus
Returning to the UK

Children born through surrogacy are not automatically entitled to British nationality. To bring your child born through surrogacy from Cyprus to the UK, you must apply for a full British passport for the child before you travel. The application process can take a significant amount of time, and even longer if supporting documentation has been issued in the north of Cyprus, due to the UK’s non-recognition of the authorities there. The maximum period you may be allowed to stay in Cyprus without a visa is 90 days.

Fertility treatment

Fertility treatment in the north of Cyprus carries risks as clinics are not regulated in the same way as in the UK. Make sure you conduct thorough research beforehand. Further information on fertility treatment abroad is available on the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) website.

International parental child abduction

The authorities in the north of Cyprus do not act on British court orders. They will not share information with the British High Commission on children subject to UK court orders. This means the British High Commission cannot ensure that these children are properly safeguarded.

Using cameras in secure areas

Avoid taking photographs near sensitive areas, such as military buildings. If you do, the authorities could arrest you.

French passport — France Diplomatie

In brief
  • French identity cards issued to adults between January 1, 2004, and December 31, 2013, are valid for five years beyond their expiry date.
  • While Cypriot authorities accept extended French identity card validity, using a valid passport is strongly recommended to avoid travel issues.
  • French citizens can enter the Republic of Cyprus with a valid passport or identity card for stays up to 90 days in either part of the island.
  • It is strongly advised to arrive via Larnaca or Paphos airports in the Republic of Cyprus, as using Ercan airport in the north may cause difficulties.
  • All COVID-19 entry restrictions have been lifted, but a 7-day isolation period is mandatory if testing positive for COVID-19.
  • French nationals staying longer than four months require registration with Cypriot immigration for a 'yellow slip' certificate.

  • deux à l’ouest (Limnitis/Yesilirmak ; Astromeritis/Zodeia) ;
  • trois à Nicosie (Ayios Dometios/Metehan ; Ledra Palace et Ledra/Lokmaci), les deux derniers étant réservés aux piétons et cyclistes ;
  • un au nord-ouest dans le district de Nicosie (Apliki-Lefka) ;

  • British citizens can travel to Cyprus visa-free for up to 90 days for tourism or short visits, but may need to show a return ticket and proof of funds.

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Cyprus’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Cyprus set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Cyprus High Commission in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

To enter Cyprus, your passport must have:

  • a ‘date of issue’ less than 10 years before the date you arrive – if you renewed your passport before 1 October 2018, it may have a date of issue that is more than 10 years ago
  • an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (the expiry date does not need to be within 10 years of the date of issue)
  • at least one blank page for stamping

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or proof of right of abode . See Dual Citizenship .

Visa requirements

You can travel without a visa to Cyprus for up to 90 days. This applies if you travel:

  • as a tourist
  • to visit family or friends
  • to attend business meetings, cultural or sports events
  • for short-term studies or training

At Cyprus border control, you may also need to:

  • show a return or onward ticket
  • prove that you have enough money for your stay

The requirements for working in Cyprus are different.

Cyprus is not part of the Schengen area, so:

  • visits to Cyprus do not count towards your 90-day visa-free limit in the Schengen area
  • visits to other EU or Schengen countries do not count towards your 90-day visa-free limit in Cyprus
  • Cyprus is not affected by the new Entry/Exit System (EES) that will be introduced in Schengen countries from 12 October 2025. You will not need to register for EES when entering Cyprus. Read more information on the EU Entry/Exit System and to understand which countries are in the Schengen area .

Make sure you get your passport stamped on entry and exit.

If your passport is missing a stamp, show evidence of when and where you entered or left Cyprus (for example, boarding passes or tickets) and ask the border guards to add the date and location in your passport.

Read about passport stamping if you live in Cyprus .

Staying longer than 90 days in a 180-day period

To stay longer, check with the Cyprus High Commission .

Do not overstay your permitted time. You could be:

  • questioned by immigration at the airport on exit
  • put on a ‘stop list’ and refused entry for up to 5 years
Entry requirements for the north of Cyprus

The Republic of Cyprus authorities will count time in the north of Cyprus towards the 90-day visa-free total. You can use any crossing point to move between the north and south of the island.

See a list of the crossing points from the Cyprus Ministry of Finance .

Only pedestrians can use the crossing points at Ledra Palace and Ledra and Lokmaci…

Cyprus by bus

Specific remarks

What are the entry requirements for Cyprus with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): French identity cards issued to adults between January 1, 2004, and December 31, 2013, are valid for five years beyond their expiry date. While Cypriot authorities accept extended French identity card validity, using a valid passport is strongly recommended to avoid travel issues. French citizens can enter the Republic of Cyprus with a valid passport or identity card for stays up to 90 days in either part of the island.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British citizens require a passport issued less than 10 years ago and valid for at least 3 months after departure to enter Cyprus. Your passport must have at least one blank page for stamping upon entry and exit to Cyprus. British citizens can travel to Cyprus visa-free for up to 90 days for tourism or short visits, but may need to show a return ticket and proof of funds.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

  • 2. Ask for a hospital in the Maximum network (art. 6.9).
  • 3. See a doctor the same day and leave with the certificate: without an on-the-spot finding, nothing is covered (art. 33).
  • 4. Admitted for more than 24 h? The front desk calls Maximum: direct payment guarantee, no deposit (art. 2.12).
  • 5. Book no ambulance or flight yourself (art. 6.2.2).
  • 6. Once home, file within 30 days (art. 35.7).

Is an Amex, Visa or Mastercard enough in Cyprus?

At today's level 1/4, card by card:

  • Amex Platinum — No area exclusion at this level — but three written limits: deductible and prior approval, 90-day cap, advance under conditions.
  • Visa — No express area exclusion — but a €156,000 cap, 90 days, and the war/instability exclusion in the background.
  • Mastercard — No exclusion in play at this level — but a €155,000 cap and 90 covered days.
  • Three lines to read in your notice: the duration (often 90 days per trip), the settlement (reimbursement afterwards or direct payment of the hospital) and the area exclusion at level 4/4.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Cyprus?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — No area exclusion at this level — compare cap, deductible and covered duration.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.
  • Have your IPID number or the PDF of the terms and ask an expert to call you back: the answer is in the document, not in the brochure.

How do I use the medical network on this page?

The page reads hospitals, pharmacies and doctors from OpenStreetMap, around the point you choose.

  • Type your city, hotel or beach: the map re-centres, 24/7 emergency rooms come first.
  • Each row gives the phone when the source publishes it, the nearest street, directions and the Google Maps listing.
  • The PDF briefing repeats the same places, numbered on a printable map.
  • No customer reviews: OpenStreetMap has none, and we invent none.

  • France Diplomatie reports in the country: dengue — mosquito protection day and night.

Can I be treated in Cyprus, or will I be evacuated?

3.6 physicians per 1,000 people (2022) versus 4.5 in Switzerland.

  • 2.1 hospital beds per 1,000 people versus 4.4 in Switzerland (World Bank).
  • Medical density comparable to Switzerland: the local network handles most cases; repatriation remains a question of convalescence and cost. Health spending of 2,899 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.
  • When the local facility is not enough, Maximum's medical team decides the evacuation to a suitable centre, and pays for it (art. 6.2.2).

Cyprus: safety, in figures?

0.8 homicides per 100,000 people (2023) versus 0.6 in Switzerland and 1.3 in France.

  • 5.8 road deaths per 100,000 people versus 2.2 in Switzerland (World Bank, WHO).
  • The homicide rate is in the same range as Switzerland or France. On the road, 3 times more deaths than in Switzerland: road crashes are the leading cause of death of healthy travellers (CDC) — seat belt, no night driving, a driver or a taxi from a rank.

Which regions of Cyprus should I avoid, precisely?

No region is advised against by the official readings checked (Global Affairs Canada, Foreign Office and France Diplomatie). Global Affairs Canada nonetheless asks for a high degree of caution (Northern Cyprus): its text, linked below, prevails.

  • Your point (Nicosia): country-wide vigilance.
  • Maximum does not exclude these areas: the VIP Pack covers care and repatriation there (sanctions, embargoes and a country already at war at departure remain enforceable).
