How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

Recommended vaccines and medicines8

Routine vaccinesCDC ↗

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include Chickenpox (Varicella) Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (DTaP, Tdap, or Td) Flu (influenza) Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) Polio Shingles

COVID-19CDC ↗

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines. Please see  Your COVID-19 Vaccination  for more information.

Hepatitis ACDC ↗

Consider hepatitis A vaccination for most travelers. It is recommended for travelers who will be doing higher risk activities, such as visiting smaller cities, villages, or rural areas where a traveler might get infected through food or water. It is recommended for travelers who plan on eating street food.

Hepatitis BCDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers younger than 60 years old traveling to Canada. Unvaccinated travelers 60 years and older may get vaccinated before traveling to Canada.

MeaslesCDC ↗

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

MonkeypoxCDC ↗

Monkeypox vaccination is recommended for any adult who anticipates any of the following activities during travel: Sexual or intimate contact with a new partner Sexual or intimate contact at a commercial sex venue, like a sex club or bathhouse Sexual or intimate contact in exchange for money, goods, drugs, or other trade Sexual or intimate contact in association with a large public event, such as a rave, party, or…

RabiesCDC ↗

Dogs infected with rabies are not commonly found in Canada. Rabies is commonly found in some terrestrial wildlife species and bats. If rabies exposures occur while in Canada, rabies vaccines are typically available throughout most of the country.

Yellow FeverCDC ↗

CDC recommendations: Vaccine is not recommended. Country entry requirements: Vaccine is not required. Updated April 23, 2025

CDC Travelers' Health, re-read weekly — the recommendation depends on your age, vaccines and itinerary: confirm it with a doctor or a travel clinic 4 to 6 weeks before departure.CDC ↗read 10.10.2026

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult your doctor or an international vaccination centre before departure to assess your health and receive vaccination recommendations. France Diplomatie
  • Pack only necessary medications in original packaging with original labels, accompanied by a prescription listing drugs by international non-proprietary name. Verify medications are authorised in your destination country. France Diplomatie
  • Ensure you are up to date with French vaccination schedule, particularly against diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis, pertussis and measles before any trip abroad. France Diplomatie
  • West Nile Virus is transmitted by infected mosquitoes in the United States and rarely in Canada; no vaccine exists, so prevent mosquito bites by wearing long clothing and applying repellent. France Diplomatie
  • After rural walks, especially in forests, examine your entire body and scalp for ticks to prevent Lyme disease; consult a doctor if a rash appears around a tick bite. France Diplomatie
  • Check that your destination can provide necessary healthcare and obtain appropriate travel insurance, as medical treatment in Canada can be very expensive with no special arrangements for British visitors. Foreign Office

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

Health — Foreign Office

Before you travel, check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Dial 911 and ask for an ambulance.

Contact your insurance or medical assistance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

  • check the latest vaccine recommendations for Canada
  • see where to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

See what health risks you’ll face in Canada , including:

  • biting insects or ticks
  • mpox – also see Canada’s Public Health Authority website which includes updates on mpox

Altitude sickness is a risk in parts of Canada, including skiing and hiking destinations in the Canadian Rockies such as Banff and Lake Louise. Read more about altitude sickness on TravelHealthPro .

Medication

The legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can be different in other countries.

Healthcare in Canada

Medical treatment can be very expensive. There are no special arrangements for British visitors.

For emergency healthcare, go to a hospital emergency room or a walk-in clinic.

If you have dual British-Canadian citizenship, you may still have to pay for medical treatment if you do not meet provincial residency requirements for healthcare. Check with the relevant province or territory health ministry for more information.

  • l’importation du cannabis demeure illégale : tout voyageur franchissant la frontière en possession de produit stupéfiant est passible de lourdes peines d’emprisonnement ;
  • le cannabis « illégal » (produit et vendu hors agrément) est interdit ;

  • exercer une activité professionnelle (y compris garde d’enfants, vente, restauration, concerts ou autres activités artistiques) ;

  • Vin : 1,5 L maximum / 53 onces liquides maximum
  • Boissons alcoolisées : 1,14 L (total) / 40 onces liquides (total)

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Canada’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Canada set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Canadian High Commission in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

To enter Canada, your passport must be valid for the length of your planned stay.

If you’re travelling through another country on your way to or from Canada, check the entry requirements for that country. Many countries will only allow entry if you have at least 6 months validity remaining on your passport.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual Citizenship .

Visa requirements

To enter or transit through Canada, most people need a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization ( eTA ) – not both.

Check if you need a visa or an eTA online .

You do not need a visa for short visits (normally up to 6 months). You may need an eTA instead.

You do not need an eTA , if you are:

  • arriving by land and sea – you must have acceptable travel documents and ID
  • a British-Canadian dual national – you must have a valid Canadian passport

See Canada’s entry requirements for full details of eTA and visa requirements.

Contact the Canadian High Commission in the UK if you are unsure about visa requirements or your eligibility to enter the country, for example, if you have a criminal record or have been arrested.

Checks at border control

Canadian border officials may ask you to show a return or onward ticket and proof that you have sufficient funds to support yourself for the duration of your stay, even if you are staying with family or friends.

Visas for permanent residence, study or work

See information on visas for permanent residence, study or work in Canada .

Ebola

As a public health measure, Canada has introduced temporary border measures for travellers arriving from regions affected by the Ebola outbreak.

Canada is suspending certain immigration documents for residents of the Democratic Republic of 4Congo, Uganda and South Sudan until August 28, 2026.

Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and foreign nationals entering Canada who, in the previous 21 days, have been in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda or South Sudan will be given a health assessment upon arrival. Those who do not have symptoms will have to quarantine for 21 days. If they do not have a place where they can quarantine safely, they will be provided with an appropriate location. Travellers who have symptoms will be isolated at a hospital for further assessment. These measures are being implemented under the Quarantine Act. This border measure will be in place until August 29, 2026.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has  declared this a Public Health Emergency of International Concern .

Check the Government of Canada’s official website for more information .

FDFA (Switzerland) — transport and specific advice, in French

Transport and infrastructure

What are the entry requirements for Canada with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): The passport must remain valid throughout the entire stay in Canada, though it need not have six months validity upon arrival; fraudulent websites offer AVE services at inflated fees, so apply only through official channels. Dogs over three months old must have a valid rabies vaccination certificate from a veterinarian, as France is not recognized by Canada as rabies-free; dogs three months or younger do not require rabies vaccination. Travelers may bring one cycle of treatment or a 90-day supply of prescription or over-the-counter medication in original packaging with the prescription; consult Canada's prescription drug list beforehand.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British citizens entering Canada need a passport valid for their entire stay; transit countries often require six months validity remaining. Most travellers need either a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), not both; check online which applies to you. British citizens arriving by land or sea do not need an eTA if they have acceptable travel documents and ID.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a Canada visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (EUR 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.

  • See a doctor or a travel clinic 8 weeks before departure (Foreign Office).
  • Carry your medicines in their packaging, with a prescription using international non-proprietary names (France Diplomatie).

Can I be treated in Canada, or will I be evacuated?

2.8 physicians per 1,000 people (2023) versus 4.5 in Switzerland.

  • 2.5 hospital beds per 1,000 people versus 4.4 in Switzerland (World Bank).
  • With 2.8 physicians per 1,000 people (38% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover. Health spending of 6,378 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784): expensive care, settled directly by the insurer with the payment guarantee.
  • When the local facility is not enough, Maximum's medical team decides the evacuation to a suitable centre, and pays for it (art. 6.2.2).

Canada: safety, in figures?

2.0 homicides per 100,000 people (2023) versus 0.6 in Switzerland and 1.3 in France.

  • 5.3 road deaths per 100,000 people versus 2.2 in Switzerland (World Bank, WHO).
  • The homicide rate is 3 times Switzerland's: violence is a real risk there, concentrated in the areas named by the official advisories. On the road, 2 times more deaths than in Switzerland: road crashes are the leading cause of death of healthy travellers (CDC) — seat belt, no night driving, a driver or a taxi from a rank.
