How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult your doctor or an international vaccination centre before departure to assess your health and receive vaccination recommendations. France Diplomatie
  • Ensure you are up to date with French vaccination calendar, particularly against diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis, pertussis and measles; your vaccination record may be requested upon arrival. France Diplomatie
  • Carry medications only in original packaging with original labels, accompanied by a prescription listing drugs by international non-proprietary name; verify authorisation in your destination country. France Diplomatie
  • Never consume medications purchased on the street due to counterfeiting risk; UK prescriptions cannot be used in El Salvador; use private clinics and hospitals whenever possible as state facilities are understaffed and underfunded. Foreign Office
  • Protect yourself against mosquito-borne diseases by wearing long clothing, applying insect repellent to exposed skin, using impregnated mosquito nets, and eliminating standing water around your accommodation. France Diplomatie
  • Drink only bottled water, encapsulated beverages or water made potable through filtration, boiling or disinfectant; avoid raw or undercooked food, cold buffets and reheated dishes; wash hands regularly with soap and water. France Diplomatie

  • Fièvre jaune : obligatoire pour les voyageurs en provenance de zones d'endémie ;
  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales ;
  • T uberculose : chez les enfants de moins de 15 ans en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Chikungunya : en cas d’épidémie ou de séjour prolongé ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

To find a pharmacy (‘farmacia’) look for one of the big national chains such as Farmacia San Nicolas, Farmacias UNO or Farmacias Economicas.

Healthcare in El Salvador

Medical facilities outside San Salvador are usually basic. State-run hospitals are generally understaffed, underfunded and ill-equipped. Use private clinics and hospitals whenever possible. Some hospitals may be reluctant to treat you until they know you have medical insurance.

Make sure you have adequate travel health insurance and accessible funds to cover the cost of any medical treatment abroad and repatriation. Always carry a copy of your insurance cover. Most medical staff speak only a little English.

FCDO has a list of medical providers in El Salvador where some staff will speak English.

Updated 24.06.2026

Exercise normal precaution in El Salvador .

U.S. government employees working in El Salvador are allowed to travel throughout the country during daylight hours. However, due to road conditions, hilly terrain, possible landslides during the rainy season, and general lack of streetlights, U.S. government employees are prohibited from traveling between cities or departments (the Salvadoran equivalent of states) at night. Gang activity has decreased dramatically since 2022, causing a drop in violent crime and murders.

There are exceptions. U.S. government employees are allowed to travel at all hours between San Salvador and:

  • El Salvador’s international airport
  • La Libertad department

U.S. government employees are prohibited from using public buses.

  • Review our travel guidance for El Salvador to learn how to prepare for a safe trip.

State of Exception

In March 2022, the Government of El Salvador declared a “State of Exception” in response to an increase in gang murders:

  • The State of Exception allows local authorities to arrest anyone they think is involved in gang activity.
  • It suspends several constitutional rights. This includes the normal protections of criminal procedure, such as the right to a speedy trial and access to counsel.
  • Tens of thousands of people are currently in prison under the State of Exception, all awaiting trial.

Several U.S. citizens have been detained under the State of Exception. They have yet to face trial. The State of Exception is still in place.

  • être attentif aux drapeaux de conditions de baignade, parfois présents sur les plages touristiques ; de ne pas entrer dans l’eau lorsqu’un drapeau rouge est présent, de rester près du rivage et d’être vigilant lorsqu’un drapeau jaune est présent ;
  • suivre les instructions des sauveteurs présents sur les plages ;

  • éviter de voyager seul(e) ;
  • se renseigner sur les zones à risques auprès de la réception de l’hôtel ou d’un poste de police ;
  • adopter une attitude discrète et ne pas attirer l’attention en portant des bijoux, des vêtements coûteux ou des appareils photos et des objets de valeur ;
  • en cas de retrait d’argent à un distributeur automatique, choisir de préférence un distributeur installé à l’intérieur d’une banque, d’un hôtel ou d’un centre commercial sécurisé. Ne pas retirer de grandes quantités d’argent, être si possible accompagné et agir de manière discrète et rapide ;
  • laisser ses objets de valeur en sécurité (coffre à l’hôtel), de même que, son passeport, ses papiers personnels et ses billets d’avion. Noter le numéro de sa carte de crédit pour faire aussitôt opposition en cas de vol ou de perte ;
  • se munir de photocopies des documents d’identité et des titres de voyage, ou les scanner et se les adresser par courriel, en pièce jointe, avant le départ : il sera ainsi facile d’en récupérer une copie en cas de vol ou de perte ;
  • en cas de vol à main armée, donner son argent, son téléphone portable et ses objets de valeur sans chercher à négocier ;
  • en cas d’agression armée, il convient de ne pas opposer de résistance et de ne pas fixer son agresseur du regard ;

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in El Salvador

Although there’s no recent history of terrorism in El Salvador, attacks cannot be ruled out.

Political situation

Avoid demonstrations and do not engage in any political activity.

It’s illegal for foreign nationals to engage in political activities such as public demonstrations in El Salvador. If you participate in demonstrations, you may be detained and deported. Avoid large gatherings or demonstrations and be cautious in public areas.

Crime

Security in El Salvador has improved considerably with significant reductions in crime. However, travellers should remain cautious as the risks of violent and petty crime still exist.

State of exception (emergency)

El Salvador’s government declared a state of exception (emergency) in response to a sharp rise in gang-related murders. The state of exception started in 2022 and has remained in place since. The murder rate has fallen significantly, but the authorities are concerned the gangs could regroup.

The state of exception gives police additional powers, resulting in a much higher number of arrests, sometimes without much evidence. It also allows police to detain people for much longer before trial. Many ordinary legal safeguards have also been weakened or removed. For example, joint legal hearings for over 100 people are common.

Some embassies have struggled to get consular access to their citizens. If you’re arrested, the El Salvador government may not allow the British Embassy to give you consular assistance or make sure you receive legal representation. Mistreatment and human rights violations, sometimes resulting in death, happen in detention facilities.

Security operations and gang-related violence do not usually affect tourists and visitors. Security operations have taken place across the country, particularly in Soyapango, Ilopango, Mejicanos, San Martin and San Marcos.

In 2022 the Salvadoran Legislative Assembly designated gang members as terrorists and established harsher penalties for them. Government communications and social media posts now sometimes refer to suspected gang members as terrorists.

Robberies and violent assaults

There have been isolated attacks on tourists, including robberies, carjackings and violent assaults.

Within San Salvador, the areas of Santa Elena, San Benito and Maquilishuat have better security, as do most of the larger shopping malls.

Protecting yourself and your belongings

Avoid walking alone or on remote trails. It may be safer to travel with others or go on a tour with a reputable company. Take extra care in more deprived areas of towns and cities and those less visited by tourists. Follow local advice on where the safer areas are.

Withdraw money from ATMs in shopping centres or change money in hotels or banks. Do not withdraw a lot of money at one time or use ATMs at night or in badly lit areas.

Protect yourself by:

  • keeping valuables, including your passport, in a hotel safe if possible
  • being aware of pickpockets at bus stations, airports, tourist sites and on public transport
  • not wearing expensive jewellery, particularly at airports, and only carrying a…

Faithful summary of the official texts below, which prevail.

Global Affairs Canada — written for Canadian travellers, valid for all

Local laws

You must abide by local laws. Learn about what you should do and how we can help if you are arrested or detained abroad. Detention conditions may be below the standards of Canadian prisons.

Drugs

Penalties for possession, use or trafficking of illegal drugs, including medical and recreational cannabis, are severe. You may be arrested on drug charges if you are with a person using illegal drugs. Border officials may also screen for drugs upon entry or departure. Convicted offenders can expect prison sentences. Drugs, alcohol and travel

Political activities

El Salvador’s constitution prohibits political activities by foreigners. You may be detained or deported if you participate in demonstrations or other political activities.

Identification

You may be subject to identity checks during your stay in El Salvador. Always carry valid identification such as a driver's licence or passport. Keep photocopies or digital copies of the following, in case of loss or seizure of the original:

  • the identification page of your passport
  • your birth certificate
  • your Canadian citizenship card
  • your driver’s licence

Keep originals and copies in separate safe locations.

Photography

It’s illegal to photograph:

  • military installations and equipment
  • schools when minors are present

Ask permission before photographing individuals, especially in areas with Indigenous presence.

Imports and exports

Salvadoran authorities require permits for the import or export of firearms, plants or animals. If you purchase an antique in El Salvador, keep your receipt in case you are asked to prove ownership at the border.

Investments

If you plan on buying property or making other investments in El Salvador, seek legal advice in Canada and in El Salvador before making any commitments. Disputes related to properties could take time and be costly to resolve.

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. The convention applies between Canada and El Salvador. If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in El Salvador, and if the applicable conditions are met, you may apply for the return of your child to the Salvadoran court. If you are in this situation:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • contact the Central Authority for your province or territory of residence for information on starting an application under The Hague Convention
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in El Salvador to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children's Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies. Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Driving

You can drive with your valid Canadian driver’s licence for the first 90 days authorized for your stay in the country. After 90 days, you must apply for a Salvadoran driver’s licence using a copy of your valid Canadian driver’s licence that has been apostilled by the Embassy of Canada in San Salvador. Driving with any detectable amount of alcohol in blood or breath is strictly prohibited. Violators face immediate arrest and prison sentences. In the event of a car accident, as required by Salvadoran law:

  • remain at the scene
  • call the police
  • take pictures and move the vehicle to a safe nearby location to avoid obstructing traffic until the authorities arrive

Some accidents may attract a crowd that could turn hostile. If you feel unsafe:

  • ensure your windows and doors are locked
  • leave the area
  • report the accident to the police and your insurance company as soon as possible

If you plan to travel between countries, you must carry an international driving permit.

Money

The U.S. dollar (USD) is the official currency in El Salvador. Canadian credit and debit cards are generally accepted. However, Canadian dollars cannot be exchanged in El Salvador. When exchanging money before your trip, ask for small denominations. Bills of $50 and $100 are not widely accepted and increase the risk of robbery.

Foreign Office — laws and cultural differences

Personal ID

The police may ask you for ID. They may detain you if they suspect you are a gang member. Always carry a copy of the photo page of your passport to prove your identity.

Money

The official currencies of El Salvador are the US dollar and bitcoin. Bitcoins may not be accepted everywhere. If you’re considering using bitcoins, make sure you understand the risks involved. Also make sure you can access US dollars if needed. It is almost impossible to change British pounds anywhere in El Salvador, so you should bring a mixture of cash and travellers cheques in US dollars. Many smaller restaurants, bars and shops do not accept 50 and 100 US dollar notes. You can exchange these notes at a bank. Bring smaller denominations with you if possible. Regular ATMs and bitcoin ATMs are widely available, particularly in San Salvador and La Libertad. Tell your bank of your travel plans to avoid your card being blocked.

Crowded events

In May 2023, at least 12 people died and more than 500 were injured during a football match at the Cuscatlán Stadium, due to overcrowding. If you’re attending events in crowded places and large gatherings, follow the advice of the local authorities and maintain a high level of security awareness.

Illegal drugs and prison sentences

There are severe penalties for drug use and trafficking in El Salvador. Prisons are overcrowded and violent.

LGBT+ travellers

Same-sex marriage, civil unions and adoption are illegal in El Salvador. Although same-sex relationships are not illegal, there is limited public acceptance of them or people with diverse gender identities, and there are no laws that explicitly protect LGBT+ people from discrimination. Public displays of affection between people of the same-sex, particularly outside of San Salvador, could result in verbal and physical harassment, discrimination and potentially violence Read more advice for LGBT+ travellers.

Landmines and unexploded weapons

There is a small risk of unexploded weapons, such as landmines, in remote areas. If you’re going off-road, take local advice and avoid such areas if warned.

Visa long séjour

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of El Salvador’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in El Salvador set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Salvadoran Embassy in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

To enter El Salvador, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the day you arrive.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

You can travel to El Salvador for tourism or business for up to 180 days without a visa.

You can extend your stay by contacting the General Directorate of Migration and Immigration .

To stay longer (to work or study, for business travel or for other reasons), you must meet the Salvadoran government’s entry requirements. Check which type of visa or work permit you need with the Salvadoran Embassy in the UK .

If you overstay your visa, you may have to pay a fine before leaving the country.

Applying for a visa

If you need a visa, contact the Salvadoran Embassy in the UK .

Travelling between El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua

You can travel between El Salvador, Guatemala, and Nicaragua for up to 90 days without a visa. The CA-4 Agreement also includes Honduras, however British Nationals must have a visa to visit Honduras. If you’re entering Honduras, read the entry requirements . Read the travel advice for:

  • Guatemala
  • Nicaragua

The 90-day period starts when you enter any of these countries and does not restart when you cross borders. You’ll have to go through immigration checks at borders.

If you’re expelled from one of these countries, you’re also excluded from the other 3. If you overstay, you may get a fine.

Vaccine requirements

To enter El Salvador, you must have a certificate to prove you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination if you’re coming from a country listed as a transmission risk .

For full details about medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, see TravelHealthPro’s El Salvador guide .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of El Salvador. You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Taking money into El Salvador

Declare cash or travellers cheques if the value is 10,000 US dollars or more.

Transit fee for Indian and African nationals

Indian nationals or nationals from any African country travelling through El Salvador must pay a 1,130 US dollar fee. See transit fee for Indian and African nationals .

British dual nationals will not have to pay the fee if they travel on their British passport.

American passport — U.S. Department of State

  • Travel with international medical cover and the 24/7 number (+41 22 ••• •• ••) saved: here the risk is not the advisory, it is the hospital bill.

Is the whole of El Salvador advised against, or only some areas?

An area advised against does not rule out the country.

  • Official answers: United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no.
  • Keep your country of residence's advisory on booking day and on departure day: that is what your policy's clauses cite.

What are the entry requirements for El Salvador with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): French nationals need no visa for stays under 90 days in Salvador; passport must be valid for at least six months upon entry. The 90-day limit applies across the C4 common area (Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Salvador); total continuous stay in all four countries cannot exceed 90 days. Stays beyond 90 days require extension authorization for serious reasons, with supporting documents and USD 25 fee payment.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date in El Salvador. British citizens may stay up to 180 days without a visa for tourism or business; extensions require contacting the General Directorate of Migration and Immigration. You can travel visa-free for up to 90 days across El Salvador, Guatemala, and Nicaragua combined under the CA-4 Agreement, but the 90-day period does not restart at borders.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a El Salvador visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (CHF 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.
  • Attach it to the visa file; if in doubt about the format, write to us.

Is an Amex, Visa or Mastercard enough in El Salvador?

At today's level 1/4, card by card:

  • Amex Platinum — No area exclusion at this level — but three written limits: deductible and prior approval, 90-day cap, advance under conditions.
  • Visa — No express area exclusion — but a €156,000 cap, 90 days, and the war/instability exclusion in the background.
  • Mastercard — No exclusion in play at this level — but a €155,000 cap and 90 covered days.
  • Three lines to read in your notice: the duration (often 90 days per trip), the settlement (reimbursement afterwards or direct payment of the hospital) and the area exclusion at level 4/4.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in El Salvador?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — No area exclusion at this level — compare cap, deductible and covered duration.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.
  • Have your IPID number or the PDF of the terms and ask an expert to call you back: the answer is in the document, not in the brochure.

How do I use the medical network on this page?

The page reads hospitals, pharmacies and doctors from OpenStreetMap, around the point you choose.

  • Type your city, hotel or beach: the map re-centres, 24/7 emergency rooms come first.
  • Each row gives the phone when the source publishes it, the nearest street, directions and the Google Maps listing.
  • The PDF briefing repeats the same places, numbered on a printable map.
  • No customer reviews: OpenStreetMap has none, and we invent none.

Which vaccines and health precautions for El Salvador?

  • France Diplomatie reports in the country: dengue, malaria, chikungunya — mosquito protection day and night.

Can I be treated in El Salvador, or will I be evacuated?

1.6 physicians per 1,000 people (2023) versus 4.5 in Switzerland.

  • 1.2 hospital beds per 1,000 people versus 4.4 in Switzerland (World Bank).
  • With 1.6 physicians per 1,000 people (64% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover. Health spending of 501 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.
  • When the local facility is not enough, Maximum's medical team decides the evacuation to a suitable centre, and pays for it (art. 6.2.2).

El Salvador: safety, in figures?

7.9 homicides per 100,000 people (2022) versus 0.6 in Switzerland and 1.3 in France.

  • 20.9 road deaths per 100,000 people versus 2.2 in Switzerland (World Bank, WHO).
  • The homicide rate is 13 times Switzerland's: violence is a real risk there, concentrated in the areas named by the official advisories. On the road, 9 times more deaths than in Switzerland: road crashes are the leading cause of death of healthy travellers (CDC) — seat belt, no night driving, a driver or a taxi from a rank.

Which laws and customs should I know in El Salvador?

Local laws apply to every traveller; here is what the official texts say.

  • Foreigners are prohibited from engaging in any political activities and may face detention or deportation if they participate in demonstrations.
  • Penalties for drug possession, use, or trafficking are severe, with potential prison sentences and overcrowded, violent detention conditions.
  • Always carry valid identification, such as a passport or driver's licence, and keep separate photocopies or digital copies of important documents.
  • Driving is permitted with a Canadian licence for the first 90 days; after this, an apostilled licence is required, and driving with any alcohol is strictly prohibited.
  • US dollars are the official currency, but smaller denominations are recommended as $50 and $100 bills are not widely accepted and may increase robbery risk.
