How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

Recommended vaccines and medicines9

Routine vaccinesCDC ↗

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include Chickenpox (Varicella) Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (DTaP, Tdap, or Td) Flu (influenza) Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) Polio Shingles

COVID-19CDC ↗

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines. Please see  Your COVID-19 Vaccination  for more information.

Hepatitis ACDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Cape Verde. Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series. Travelers allergic to a vaccine component should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.

Hepatitis BCDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers of all ages traveling to Cape Verde.

MeaslesCDC ↗

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

MonkeypoxCDC ↗

Monkeypox vaccination is recommended for any adult who anticipates any of the following activities during travel: Sexual or intimate contact with a new partner Sexual or intimate contact at a commercial sex venue, like a sex club or bathhouse Sexual or intimate contact in exchange for money, goods, drugs, or other trade Sexual or intimate contact in association with a large public event, such as a rave, party, or…

RabiesCDC ↗

Dogs infected with rabies are not commonly found in Cape Verde. If rabies exposures occur while in Cape Verde, rabies vaccines may only be available in larger suburban/urban medical facilities.

TyphoidCDC ↗

Recommended for most travelers. Typhoid vaccine is not 100% effective. Practicing safe food and water habits , including washing hands at key times , can also help prevent typhoid fever .

Yellow FeverCDC ↗

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult your doctor or an international vaccination centre at least eight weeks before departure to assess your health and receive vaccination recommendations. France Diplomatie
  • Ensure you are up to date with French vaccination calendar, particularly against diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis, pertussis and measles; your vaccination record may be requested upon arrival. France Diplomatie
  • Carry only necessary medications in original packaging with original labels, accompanied by a prescription listing medicines in international non-proprietary names; verify authorisation in your destination country. France Diplomatie
  • The UK Health Security Agency has investigated increased cases of Shigella sonnei and Salmonella in travellers returning from Cape Verde; reduce risk through good hand hygiene and food and water precautions. Foreign Office
  • Medical facilities in Cape Verde are basic and limited; Global Health Insurance Cards are not accepted, so appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or medical evacuation is essential. Foreign Office

  • Fièvre jaune : obligatoire pour les voyageurs en provenance de zones d’endémie ;
  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Tuberculose : chez les enfants de moins de 15 ans en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales ;
  • Chikungunya : en cas d’épidémie ou de séjour prolongé ;
  • Dengue : en cas d’épidémie active ou de séjour prolongé en zone endémique ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Health — Foreign Office

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need. Health care in Cape Verde is very basic and limited
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant. Global Health Insurance Cards (GHIC) are not accepted in Cape Verde so it is essential that you have appropriate travel insurance.

Emergency medical number

Call 130 and ask for an ambulance.

Contact your insurance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

  • check the current vaccine recommendations for Cape Verde
  • see where to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

See what health risks you’ll face on Cape Verde , including:

  • shigella sonnei
  • salmonella
  • dengue

If you have an underlying health condition, speak to a healthcare professional before travelling.

UK Health Security Agency has investigated an increase in cases of Shigella sonnei and Salmonella in travellers returning from Cape Verde. Reported cases have decreased, but there is still a risk of gastrointestinal illness as in other countries.

You can reduce your risk by practising good hand hygiene and following food and water precautions. Read more about food and water hygiene on TravelHealthPro .

The Cape Verde government has raised the civil protection warning level for dengue on the islands of Santiago, Fogo and Brava.

Altitude sickness is a risk on the island of Fogo in Cape Verde. Read more about altitude sickness on TravelHealthPro .

Medication

The legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can be different in other countries.

Read best practice when travelling with medicines on TravelHealthPro .

Changes to your routine when travelling, such as later nights, coping with heat and changes to your diet can have an impact on your medication. See the Summer Proof Your Health campaign for more information.

Medication is only available from pharmacies. Find a nearby pharmacy using the list of pharmacies in Cape Verde (in Portuguese).

If you take prescribed medication, bring enough for the duration of your visit and keep a few days’ supply in your hand luggage in case your checked baggage is delayed or lost.

If you have a UK prescription and run out of medication, ask a pharmacy whether they can supply it. The same medicine, strength or dose may not be available, and some medicines may be in short supply or unavailable in Cape Verde.

If you need a repeat prescription, go to the nearest health centre or hospital emergency department. You may have to pay for your medication.

Healthcare in Cape Verde

Medical facilities in Cape Verde are basic and limited, and some medicines are in short supply or unavailable. The largest hospitals are in Praia on Santiago and Mindelo on São Vicente, with smaller medical facilities and clinics located throughout the country. Medical facilities are particularly limited on the island of Boa Vista.

  • ne pas se promener, à pied, de nuit (privilégier le taxi) ;
  • dans les zones urbaines des îles de Santiago et São Vicente : ne pas se promener seul, à pied, hors des zones fréquentées de centre-ville ;
  • ne pas porter sur soi de grosses sommes d’argent, des bijoux, des objets de valeur (se rappeler que les téléphones portables, les appareils photo et vidéo sont des cibles privilégiées pour les voleurs) ;
  • dans les îles de Santiago, Fogo et Boa Vista : être accompagné lors des excursions dans les montagnes ou les dunes (même le jour), de préférence d’un guide capverdien connaissant bien le pays ;
  • remplacer la ceinture « banane », très facile à arracher, par une bourse moins voyante ;
  • conserver dans un endroit sûr les documents d’identité et les billets d’avion ;
  • rester si possible en groupe, plus particulièrement la nuit tombée ;
  • ne pas opposer de résistance en cas de tentative de vol à l’arraché ;

Fogo : volcan Pico Grande

  • ne portez pas sur vous des objets de valeur (montre, bijoux, etc.) ou de grosses sommes d'argent;
  • renoncez à visiter les quartiers pauvres de villes;
  • entreprenez les randonnées de préférence en groupe et faites-vous accompagner de guides locaux ayant une expertise des lieux ;
  • évitez les plages désertes;

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Cape Verde

Although there’s no recent history of terrorism in Cape Verde, attacks cannot be ruled out.

Crime

The crime rate in Cape Verde is generally low, but can include pickpocketing, bag snatching, burglary and muggings, particularly in the capital city of Praia and on the islands of Sal and Boa Vista. Sexual assaults are rare but have been reported.

You can take steps to protect yourself and your belongings, including:

  • leaving valuables somewhere secure, such as a hotel safe
  • keeping your belongings in sight at bars and restaurants
  • not carrying large amounts of cash or wearing expensive jewellery
  • avoiding unlit and isolated areas after dark
  • avoiding beaches with limited or restricted visibility
  • making sure your hotel or accommodation’s windows and doors are always locked
Illegal drugs and prison sentences

There are severe penalties for possessing, using or trafficking drugs. Penalties include fines and long prison sentences.

Buying property

British nationals have experienced problems when buying property in Cape Verde. Before buying property on the islands, get independent qualified legal advice. See FCDO ’s list of English-speaking lawyers in Cape Verde .

Beaches and swimming

If you are going into the water, always use beaches where there is a lifeguard on duty.

Tides and currents around the islands are very strong. Take care when walking close to the water’s edge, especially along unsupervised stretches of beach. Waves can be unpredictable and have a strong undertow. Follow the lifeguard’s instructions and respect the warning flags:

  • red means danger: do not go into the water
  • yellow means caution: you can walk in the water, but you cannot swim
  • green means it’s safe to swim

See water safety on holiday from the Royal Life Saving Society.

Road travel

If you are planning to drive in Cape Verde, see information on driving abroad .

You can use a valid UK photocard driving licence to drive in Cape Verde for up to 6 months. If you still have a paper driving licence, you should update it to a photocard licence, or get the 1968 version of the international driving permit ( IDP ) and carry it with your licence. You will be arrested if you are found driving without a licence.

Hiring vehicles

If you hire a car, scooter or quad bike, make sure it’s in good condition and that it’s fully insured. Hire car companies often have stricter requirements for their customers, such as a year of driving experience, a higher minimum age and holding an IDP .

Quad biking is considered an extreme sport. It is unlikely that it will be included in your travel insurance policy. Check whether you need additional insurance to cover extreme sports and make sure it covers you for the cost of medical care and repatriation. Medical facilities are very basic in Cape Verde so it is highly likely that following a quad bike accident you will need to be medically evacuated.

It’s a legal requirement to wear a crash helmet when riding a scooter or quad bike. Your…

Passeport

  • île de Santiago : aéroport Nelson Mandela à Praia ;
  • île de Sal : aéroport Amílcar Cabral ;
  • île de São Vicente : aéroport Cesária Évora à Mindelo ;

  • île de Santiago : port de Praia ;
  • île de São Vicente : port de Mindelo ;

  • par l’ambassade de France à Praia ;

  • la déclaration de perte ou de vol du passeport établie auprès de la police capverdienne ;
  • une photo d’identité conforme aux normes de l’Organisation de l’aviation civile internationale (format identique à celui d’un passeport français) ;
  • une copie de bonne qualité du passeport perdu ou volé, ou tout autre document officiel avec photo permettant d’identifier le demandeur ;
  • le billet d’avion retour pour la France ;

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Cape Verde’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Cape Verde set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Cape Verdean Consulate-General in Rotterdam (in Portuguese) or through the Cape Verde Consular Portal email address (in English).

Passport validity requirements

To enter Cape Verde, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost, stolen or is damaged.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual Citizenship .

Visa requirements

You can enter Cape Verde as a visitor for up to 30 days without a visa.

To stay longer or to travel for other reasons, you must meet the Cape Verde government’s entry requirements .

Traveller entry form

You must fill in a traveller entry form at least 5 days before you arrive in the country. Complete the pre-registration and pay the airport security fee (‘TSA’) on the official online platform. Bring proof of confirmation to show when you arrive.

From 1 July 2026, if you do not complete the pre-registration or cannot show proof, you will have to pay double the TSA fee at border control.

If you’re travelling with a tour operator, check if they can do this for you.

See more information on the traveller entry form .

Children aged one and under do not need to have a completed form and are exempt from the TSA fee.

Travelling with children

Children aged 17 and under travelling to Cape Verde alone, or with a person who is not their parent or legal guardian, must carry a letter of authorisation to travel from their parent or guardian. The letter must be in Portuguese and the signature must be certified by a solicitor or notary

The letter should include:

  • the child’s dates of arrival and departure
  • the address where they will be staying
  • the name of the adult in Cape Verde who will be responsible for them during their stay
  • the full names, passport numbers and contact details of the parent or guardian
  • the parent or guardian’s signature and date of issue

FDFA (Switzerland) — transport and specific advice, in French

Transport and infrastructure

EASE

What is the official risk level in Cape Verde today?

  • Is the whole country advised against? United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no (reading of 27 September 2026).
  • Contractually, only an FDFA, FOPH or WHO advisory against the trip opens Module A (art. 18.1) — that is not the case today.
  • Travel with international medical cover and the 24/7 number (+41 22 ••• •• ••) saved: here the risk is not the advisory, it is the hospital bill.

Is the whole of Cape Verde advised against, or only some areas?

An area advised against does not rule out the country.

  • Keep your country of residence's advisory on booking day and on departure day: that is what your policy's clauses cite.

What are the entry requirements for Cape Verde with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): French nationals, including dual Franco-Cape Verdean citizens, must enter Cape Verde with a French passport valid for at least three months beyond their planned departure date. Emergency passports are accepted. French tourists may stay visa-free for up to 30 days. Stays of 31 to 90 days require a tourism visa obtained from Cape Verdean consulates or upon arrival. Entry and exit must occur at designated airports (Praia, Sal, Mindelo, Boa Vista) or ports (Praia, Mindelo, Palmeira). All other entry points are prohibited.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British citizens need a passport valid for at least six months beyond arrival. Entry is denied with invalid, lost, stolen or damaged documents. Visitors may stay up to thirty days without a visa. Longer stays require meeting Cape Verde government entry requirements. Complete traveller entry form pre-registration and pay airport security fee (TSA) on the official online platform at least five days before arrival. From 1 July 2026, failure to pre-register results in double TSA fee at border control.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a Cape Verde visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (EUR 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.
  • Attach it to the visa file; if in doubt about the format, write to us.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Cape Verde?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

The 207 country pages — hospitals, pharmacies, police, embassies, emergency numbers, official advice from four governments, health, safety in figures, events in progress — read around the city you name. Your policy — benefits, the six steps, claims, articles. The site — prices, certificate, subscription. Nothing else: what it does not know, it says so and hands you to an adviser.

Same advisory level: Palau · Paraguay · Poland · French Polynesia · Portugal · Romania
