How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • French nationals should consult a doctor or international vaccination center for health assessments and recommendations, including vaccinations like diphtheria, tetanus, polio, and measles.
  • Carry necessary personal medications in their original packaging with an international common name prescription, and verify their legality in the destination country.
  • British nationals should check healthcare availability and ensure adequate travel insurance for local treatment or medical evacuation.
  • British nationals can use a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for medically necessary state healthcare in Slovenia.
  • Swiss nationals must present their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for basic medical care and carry sufficient personal medication, checking foreign regulations beforehand.
  • Dial 112 for emergency medical assistance in Slovenia and contact your insurance provider if referred for treatment.

  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

  • la région de la rivière Soča, région la plus sensible (ouest du pays) ;
  • la région de Ljubljana ;

  • fermer les portières des véhicules et ne rien laisser d’apparent ;
  • éviter de porter sur soi d’importantes sommes d’argent ;
  • garder ses bagages près de soi ;
  • conserver ses documents de voyages en lieu sûr ;

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Slovenia

Terrorist attacks in Slovenia cannot be ruled out.

Personal ID

Always carry a copy of your passport as a form of ID. You can get a 50 to 200 euro fine if the police ask you for ID and you cannot show it.

Illegal drugs

Illegal drugs, including cannabis, carry severe penalties. You should expect a long jail sentence and heavy fines for possessing, using or smuggling illegal drugs, including when transiting through the airport.

Airports in Slovenia have excellent technology and security for detecting illegal items. This is also used to scan the baggage of transiting passengers.

Road crossing fines

There are heavy fines for not using designated road crossing points (‘jaywalking’). If you cannot pay an on-the-spot fine, the police or authorities can confiscate your documents or assets until you pay.

Tour guides

Tour guides must display a tour guide card to show they are registered with the Slovenian authorities.

Emergency siren tests

The Slovenian authorities test a nationwide emergency siren on the first Saturday of every month at 12pm. If you hear the siren at another time, follow instructions from the authorities.

Skiing and mountaineering

If you are planning a skiing or mountaineering holiday, see Policija - Helpful Advice to all Hikers, Trekkers and Mountaineers and National Meteorological Service of Slovenia   before you travel. Off-piste skiing is highly dangerous as there is a risk of avalanches in some areas. See Preparing for winter sports abroad .

Hiking

If you plan to hike in Slovenia:

  • take particular care if you’re in an area where bears have been sighted. Visitors in mountain areas occasionally encounter bears and wolves
  • consider the level of difficulty and distance
  • plan for the weakest member of your group
  • use a printed or digital map with marked paths and their descriptions
  • tell family or friends of your plans
  • check whether mountain cabins are open
  • do not use hiking trails that have been closed or take shortcuts

Bears are present in wooded areas throughout Slovenia, including near cities. In 2025 a bear attacked a person walking their dog in Skofljica, 6 miles southeast of Ljubljana.

Some demanding mountain trails can include sections of via ferrata (steel wires and metal rungs), which need a climbing harness and helmet.

For mountain rescue, call 112.

Wild camping

Wild camping is illegal in Slovenia. Only camp in registered campsites, or if you are travelling with a camper van or motorhome in a designated camper stop (“Parking za avtodome”, also known as “PZA”). Fines for illegal camping depend upon the local municipality or authority and can range from 40 to 500 euros. Enforcement is especially strict in national parks, including Triglav National Park.

Road travel

If you are planning to drive in Slovenia, see information on driving abroad and check the rules of the road in the RAC’s Slovenia guide . The guide lists driving regulations and other legal requirements you need to be aware of, such as:

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. The convention applies between Canada and Slovenia. If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Slovenia, and if the applicable conditions are met, you may apply for the return of your child to the Slovenian court. If you are in this situation:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • contact the Central Authority for your province or territory of residence for information on starting an application under The Hague Convention

  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children's Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies. Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Driving

You must carry an international driving permit. Slovenian law requires that all vehicles be equipped of:

  • a reflective vest
  • a warning triangle

There is a zero tolerance for drinking and driving. Penalties for traffic offences are severe. You can expect heavy fines if you don’t respect traffic laws. Jaywalkers may also be fined. Police can collect on-the-spot traffic fines from non-residents. They may also retain your identification document, such as your passport, until payment is made.

Money

The currency of Slovenia is the euro. ATM are rare in mountain regions or small villages. Carry sufficient cash. If you are carrying €10,000 or more, or the equivalent in other currencies or monetary instruments, you must make a declaration to customs when you enter or leave the European Union.

  • Groupe 1 : héroïne, cannabis et divers autres produits stupéfiants ;
  • Groupe 2 : amphétamines, cocaïne, méthadone et autres ;

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of the current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Slovenia set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Slovenian Embassy in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

Slovenia follows Schengen area rules . Your passport must:

- have a ‘date of issue’ less than 10 years before the date you arrive – if you renewed your passport before 1 October 2018, it might have a date of issue that is more than 10 years ago, making it invalid for entry to the Schengen area

- have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area (the expiry date does not need to be within 10 years of the date of issue)

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

You can travel without a visa to the Schengen area , which includes Slovenia, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This applies if you travel:

  • as a tourist
  • to visit family or friends
  • to attend business meetings, cultural or sports events
  • for short-term studies or training

The requirements for working in Slovenia are different.

If you’re travelling to other Schengen countries as well, make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day visa-free limit. Visits to Schengen countries in the 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days. If you overstay the 90-day visa-free limit, you may have to pay an on-the-spot fine. If you cannot pay the fine, the border police can confiscate your documents or assets until you pay. You may also be banned from entering Schengen countries for up to 3 years.

At Slovenian border control, you may need to:

  • show a return or onward ticket
  • prove that you have enough money for your stay
Staying longer than 90 days in a 180-day period

To stay longer, you must meet the Slovenian government’s entry requirements. Check which type of visa or permit you need with the  Slovenian Embassy in the UK .

If you’re in Slovenia with a residence permit or long-stay visa, this does not count towards your 90-day visa-free limit.

Read about entry processes if you live in Slovenia .

New Schengen entry requirements

The European Union’s (EU) new Entry/Exit System (EES) is now being implemented across the Schengen area.

This means that when you travel into the Schengen area for short stays, you may need to register your biometric details, such as fingerprints and a photo. There is no cost for EES registration.

On your first visit into a Schengen country, you may be asked to register your details at a special booth before proceeding to the immigration desk. Follow directions from your travel operator or the staff at your port…

What are the entry requirements for Slovenia with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): French nationals do not require a visa for any length of stay in Slovenia, but must carry a valid passport or national identity card. Expired French national identity cards issued to adults between 2004 and 2013 are valid for an additional five years, but carrying a valid passport is recommended. Do I need an insurance certificate for a Slovenia visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (EUR 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.
  • Attach it to the visa file; if in doubt about the format, write to us.

Is an Amex, Visa or Mastercard enough in Slovenia?

At today's level 1/4, card by card:

  • Amex Platinum — No area exclusion at this level — but three written limits: deductible and prior approval, 90-day cap, advance under conditions.
  • Visa — No express area exclusion — but a €156,000 cap, 90 days, and the war/instability exclusion in the background.
  • Mastercard — No exclusion in play at this level — but a €155,000 cap and 90 covered days.
  • Three lines to read in your notice: the duration (often 90 days per trip), the settlement (reimbursement afterwards or direct payment of the hospital) and the area exclusion at level 4/4.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Slovenia?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — No area exclusion at this level — compare cap, deductible and covered duration.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.
  • Have your IPID number or the PDF of the terms and ask an expert to call you back: the answer is in the document, not in the brochure.

How do I use the medical network on this page?

The page reads hospitals, pharmacies and doctors from OpenStreetMap, around the point you choose.

  • Type your city, hotel or beach: the map re-centres, 24/7 emergency rooms come first.
  • Each row gives the phone when the source publishes it, the nearest street, directions and the Google Maps listing.
  • The PDF briefing repeats the same places, numbered on a printable map.
  • No customer reviews: OpenStreetMap has none, and we invent none.

Which vaccines and health precautions for Slovenia?

  • See a doctor or a travel clinic 8 weeks before departure (Foreign Office).

Can I be treated in Slovenia, or will I be evacuated?

3.4 physicians per 1,000 people (2022) versus 4.5 in Switzerland.

  • 4.1 hospital beds per 1,000 people versus 4.4 in Switzerland (World Bank).
  • Medical density comparable to Switzerland: the local network handles most cases; repatriation remains a question of convalescence and cost. Health spending of 3,371 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.
  • When the local facility is not enough, Maximum's medical team decides the evacuation to a suitable centre, and pays for it (art. 6.2.2).

Slovenia: safety, in figures?

0.6 homicides per 100,000 people (2023) versus 0.6 in Switzerland and 1.3 in France.

  • 5.1 road deaths per 100,000 people versus 2.2 in Switzerland (World Bank, WHO).
  • The homicide rate is in the same range as Switzerland or France. On the road, 2 times more deaths than in Switzerland: road crashes are the leading cause of death of healthy travellers (CDC) — seat belt, no night driving, a driver or a taxi from a rank.
