How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

Recommended vaccines and medicines9

Routine vaccinesCDC ↗

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include Chickenpox (Varicella) Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (DTaP, Tdap, or Td) Flu (influenza) Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) Polio Shingles

COVID-19CDC ↗

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines. Please see  Your COVID-19 Vaccination  for more information.

Hepatitis ACDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Slovakia. Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series. Travelers allergic to a vaccine component should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.

Hepatitis BCDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers younger than 60 years old traveling to Slovakia. Unvaccinated travelers 60 years and older may get vaccinated before traveling to Slovakia.

MeaslesCDC ↗

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

MonkeypoxCDC ↗

Monkeypox vaccination is recommended for any adult who anticipates any of the following activities during travel: Sexual or intimate contact with a new partner Sexual or intimate contact at a commercial sex venue, like a sex club or bathhouse Sexual or intimate contact in exchange for money, goods, drugs, or other trade Sexual or intimate contact in association with a large public event, such as a rave, party, or…

RabiesCDC ↗

Dogs infected with rabies are not commonly found in Slovakia. Rabies is present in some terrestrial wildlife species. If rabies exposures occur while in Slovakia, rabies vaccines are typically available throughout most of the country.

Tick-borne EncephalitisCDC ↗

For travelers moving or traveling to TBE-endemic areas TBE vaccine is recommended for persons who will have extensive exposure to ticks based on their planned outdoor activities and itinerary. TBE vaccine may be considered for persons who might engage in outdoor activities in areas ticks are likely to be found.

Yellow FeverCDC ↗

CDC recommendations: Vaccine is not recommended. Country entry requirements: Vaccine is not required. Updated April 23, 2025

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult your doctor or international vaccination centre at least eight weeks before departure to assess your health and receive vaccination recommendations. Foreign Office
  • Ensure you are up to date with French vaccination calendar, particularly against diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis, pertussis and measles before any trip abroad. France Diplomatie
  • Carry only necessary medications in original packaging with original labels, accompanied by a prescription with international non-proprietary names; verify authorisation in your destination country. France Diplomatie
  • Obtain a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for medically necessary state healthcare in Slovakia; this does not replace travel insurance. Foreign Office
  • Tick-borne encephalitis vaccination is recommended for rural or wooded areas; tick bites pose increased risk from April to October in Slovakia. Foreign Office
  • If taking regular medications, carry sufficient quantity; consult your embassy or consulate before departure regarding import restrictions for psychotropic drugs or controlled substances. DFAE

  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;

Health — Foreign Office

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Dial 155 and ask for an ambulance.

Contact your insurance or medical assistance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

  • check the latest vaccine recommendations for Slovakia
  • see where to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

See what health risks you’ll face in Slovakia , including an increased risk of tick bites from April to October.

Altitude sickness is a risk in parts of Slovakia. Read more about altitude sickness on TravelHealthPro .

Medication

The legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can be different in other countries.

Read best practice when travelling with medicines on TravelHealthPro .

Healthcare in Slovakia

FCDO has a list of medical providers in Slovakia where some staff will speak English.

Health insurance cards

To get medically necessary state healthcare in Slovakia, you need a Global Health Insurance Card ( GHIC ) or a European Health Insurance Card ( EHIC ).

The NHS’s getting healthcare abroad webpage has details about:

  • how to apply for a GHIC
  • how to get temporary cover if you lose your card or it does not arrive in time
  • who qualifies for a new EHIC instead of a GHIC
  • what treatment counts as medically necessary

A GHIC or EHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance. You may have costs your GHIC or EHIC does not cover, including:

  • changes to travel and accommodation bookings
  • additional standard costs for treatment
  • medical repatriation to the UK
  • treatment that is ruled non-urgent
  • private healthcare
  • private clinics

  • Laisser ses documents d’identité au coffre de son hôtel et se déplacer avec des photocopies ;
  • Répartir son argent et ses cartes de crédit dans des poches intérieures ;

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Slovakia

Terrorist attacks in Slovakia cannot be ruled out.

Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreign nationals. Stay aware of your surroundings, keep up to date with local media reports and follow the advice of local authorities.

An attack on a bar popular with the LGBT+ community in the capital, Bratislava, on 12 October 2022, which resulted in 2 deaths, was classified as a terrorist act. Prior to this attack, there was no recent history of terrorism in Slovakia.

Border with Ukraine

There is widespread military activity in Ukraine. Border crossings with Ukraine may be affected by security measures, temporary restrictions or delays at short notice. If travelling near the Slovakia-Ukraine border, check local information before departure, follow instructions from Slovak police and border authorities. FCDO advises against travel to Ukraine. See warnings against travel in Ukraine travel advice .

Political demonstrations

Political demonstrations can take place in Bratislava and other cities, sometimes at short notice. Recent demonstrations have generally been peaceful, but large gatherings may disrupt transport and public areas. Stay away from demonstrations, monitor local media, and follow the advice of local authorities.

Protecting your belongings

There is a risk of petty crime, especially in Bratislava. Take precautions against pickpockets and bag snatchers and do not leave your possessions unattended. Pickpockets operate around the main tourist areas, particularly the Christmas markets and in bars, and have targeted foreign nationals.

Do not leave your passport as a deposit for services such as car rental. Keep sight of your bank card when making payments.

Drink spiking and scams

There is a risk of drink spiking and theft in clubs around the Bratislava Old Town pedestrian area. People have sometimes been charged extortionate prices for drinks, so check prices before ordering.

Vehicle crime

Criminals sometimes target foreign-registered vehicles. They may puncture your tyres at a petrol station and then pretend to help or fake a breakdown. If you stop to help, they may rob you or steal your car.

At night, only stop your car in a well-lit public area such as a service station. Make sure you lock your car and be extremely wary of anyone offering help.

Do not leave luggage in view in your car.

Personal ID

You must always carry your passport with you as ID. You can get a fine of up to 1,600 euros for not showing ID if the Slovak police ask for it.

Illegal drugs

Illegal drugs, including cannabis, carry severe penalties. You should expect a long jail sentence and heavy fines for possessing, using or smuggling illegal drugs, including when transiting through the airport.

  • Cigarettes : 40 unités ;

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Slovakia’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Slovakia set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Slovak Embassy in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

Slovakia follows Schengen area rules . Your passport must:

- have a ‘date of issue’ less than 10 years before the date you arrive – if you renewed your passport before 1 October 2018, it might have a date of issue that is more than 10 years ago, making it invalid for entry to the Schengen area

- have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area (the expiry date does not need to be within 10 years of the date of issue)

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

You can travel without a visa to the Schengen area, which includes Slovakia, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This applies if you travel:

  • as a tourist
  • to visit family or friends
  • to attend business meetings, cultural or sports events
  • for short-term studies or training

If you’re travelling to other Schengen countries as well, make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day limit. Visits to Schengen countries in the 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days.

Staying longer than 90 days in a 180-day period

To stay longer, to work or study, for business travel or for other reasons, you must meet the local foreigner residence requirements and the  recent changes to this made on 1 July 2025.

If you’re in Slovakia with a residence permit or long-stay visa, this does not count towards your 90-day visa-free limit.

You could get a fine of up to 1,600 euros if you stay longer than legally allowed.

Read about  entry processes if you live in Slovakia .

At border control in Slovakia, you may also need to:

  • show a return or onward ticket
  • prove you have enough money for your stay
  • show proof of your accommodation, for example, a hotel booking confirmation or proof of address for a second home
New Schengen entry requirements

The European Union’s (EU) new Entry/Exit System ( EES ) is now being implemented across the Schengen area.

This means that when you travel into the Schengen area for short stays, you may need to register your biometric details, such as fingerprints and a photo. There is no cost for EES registration.

On your first visit into a Schengen country, you may be asked to register your details at a special booth before proceeding to the immigration desk. Follow directions from your travel operator or the staff at your port of entry. You may also need to provide either your fingerprint or photo when you leave the…

Frequently asked questions — travel insurance Slovakia

What is the official risk level in Slovakia today?

Level 1/4 — Exercise Normal Precautions, U.S. Department of State, retrieved on 16 October 2026.

  • Is the whole country advised against? United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no (reading of 27 September 2026).
  • Contractually, only an FDFA, FOPH or WHO advisory against the trip opens Module A (art. 18.1) — that is not the case today.
  • Travel with international medical cover and the 24/7 number (+41 22 ••• •• ••) saved: here the risk is not the advisory, it is the hospital bill.
  • We check these sources every morning and e-mail you the day one changes (Alerts button).

Is the whole of Slovakia advised against, or only some areas?

An area advised against does not rule out the country.

  • Official answers: United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no.
  • Keep your country of residence's advisory on booking day and on departure day: that is what your policy's clauses cite.

What are the entry requirements for Slovakia with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): EU citizens may enter Slovakia for stays under 90 days with a valid passport or national identity card covering the entire stay duration. French nationals with identity cards issued between 1 January 2004 and 31 December 2013 should carry a valid passport instead, as Slovakia does not officially recognise the five-year extension of validity. Stays exceeding 90 days require French nationals to present a valid passport and proof of residence to the foreign police office in Slovakia to obtain a residence permit.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British passport must have issue date less than ten years before arrival and expiry date at least three months after planned departure from Schengen area. British citizens may stay visa-free in Slovakia for maximum ninety days within any one hundred eighty-day period for tourism, business, or study. Staying longer than ninety days in one hundred eighty days requires meeting local residence requirements; overstaying incurs fines up to one thousand six hundred euros.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a Slovakia visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (EUR 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.
  • Attach it to the visa file; if in doubt about the format, write to us.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Slovakia?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — No area exclusion at this level — compare cap, deductible and covered duration.

Which laws and customs should I know in Slovakia?

Local laws apply to every traveller; here is what the official texts say.

  • You must carry your passport as photo identification, as local authorities can ask you to prove your identity and failure to do so may result in a fine of up to 1,600 euros.
  • Penalties for drug possession, use, or trafficking are severe, potentially leading to lengthy jail sentences, and public intoxication or disorderly conduct can result in heavy fines or detention.
  • Driving in Slovakia requires a valid Canadian driver's licence and an international driving permit, with a zero-tolerance policy for drinking and driving that can lead to licence suspension, heavy fines, or jail time.
  • Vehicles must be equipped with a first aid kit, warning triangle, and high-visibility vests for all passengers, and a vignette is required for highway travel, purchasable at border crossings, gas stations, post offices, or online.
  • You must declare cash amounts of €10,000 or more, or the equivalent in other currencies or monetary instruments, to customs when entering or leaving the European Union.
