How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

  • Fièvre jaune : o bligatoire pour les voyageurs en provenance de zones d’endémie ;
  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Tuberculose : chez les enfants de moins de 15 ans en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales ;
  • Chikungunya : en cas d’épidémie ou de séjour prolongé ;
  • Dengue : en cas d’épidémie active ou de séjour prolongé en zone endémique ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Moins concernées par ces trafics et bénéficiant d’une meilleure présence des forces de l’ordre, les villes de Kangar et de Kota Baharu sont placées en zone de vigilance renforcée ;

  • les personnes arrêtées sont placées en détention provisoire sans possibilité de libération sous caution ;
  • les procédures judiciaires peuvent durer plusieurs années, durant lesquelles les prévenus restent incarcérés ;

  • la possession, la consommation, le transport ou même le fait de servir d’intermédiaire (y compris à son insu) sont sévèrement réprimés ;
  • les autorités locales appliquent cette législation de manière extrêmement stricte, quelle que soit la nationalité de la personne mise en cause ;

Recommandations :

  • ne jamais transporter de bagage ou de colis pour autrui ;
  • surveiller en permanence ses effets personnels ;
  • refuser toute proposition impliquant le transport de substances ou d’objets non vérifiés ;

La navigation vers l’Océan Indien en général demeure dangereuse, notamment à cause d’actes ponctuels de piraterie. Il est recommandé de signaler tout projet de déplacement par voie maritime dans la région et de rejoindre la coopération navale volontaire en transmettant sa position et ses intentions à : • État-major ALINDIEN COMFOR EAU : par téléphone +971 74 265 21 265 ou par courriel à alindien-comfor-eau-marsec.contact.fct@intradef.gouv.fr ou alindien-marsec.operateur.fct@def.gouv.fr ;

Risque sismique

  • Il est conseillé de se déplacer avec l’original de passeport, la présentation d’une copie n’étant pas suffisante ;
  • Il est déconseillé de se déplacer avec de grosses sommes d’argent ;
  • Il convient d’éviter de porter des bijoux ou des objets de valeur ;

  • déposez les objets de valeur dans le coffre-fort de l'hôtel ;
  • utilisez votre carte de crédit avec la prudence requise, car des escroqueries peuvent arriver, même dans les hôtels, les restaurants et les magasins hors taxe des aéroports ;
  • n'acceptez pas d'invitations de personnes inconnues. Il arrive que des touristes soient victimes de bandes de tricheurs professionnels qui les invitent chez eux sous un prétexte quelconque et les font participer, même contre leur gré, à des jeux d'argent. Il n'est pas rare que les touristes se fassent ainsi délester de plusieurs milliers de francs;
  • il existe le risque que des boissons contenant de l'alcool frelaté soient vendues ou servies. Leur consommation peut avoir des conséquences mortelles;

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Malaysia

Terrorist attacks in Malaysia cannot be ruled out.

Terrorism attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreign nationals, such as:

  • bars and restaurants
  • hotels
  • markets
  • shopping malls
  • tourist attractions
  • places of worship
  • airports

You should be especially vigilant and maintain a high level of security awareness in crowded places and at large gatherings.

Terrorist kidnap

In Malaysia, there is a threat to foreigners of kidnapping in coastal areas of eastern Sabah from terrorist groups. The threat is particularly high on islands close to the Sulu Archipelago in the southern Philippines.

The Abu Sayyaf Group ( ASG ), based in the Philippines, has previously kidnapped foreigners from the east coast of mainland Sabah, the islands and the surrounding waters. The group has murdered several hostages. Some groups operating in the southern Philippines, including factions of ASG , have pledged allegiance to Daesh and are likely to regard westerners as legitimate targets.

British nationals are seen as legitimate targets, including tourists, humanitarian aid workers, journalists and business travellers. If you are kidnapped, the reason for your presence is unlikely to protect you or secure your safe release.

The long-standing policy of the British government is not to make substantive concessions to hostage takers. The British government considers that paying ransoms and releasing prisoners builds the capability of terrorist groups and finances their activities. This can, in turn, increase the risk of further hostage-taking. The Terrorism Act (2000) makes payments to terrorists illegal.

Political situation

In response to the current situation in Israel and Palestine, there have been peaceful demonstrations in some Malaysian cities, including outside some western embassies.

It’s illegal under Malaysian law for foreign nationals to take part in demonstrations or protests.

Monitor local and international media and avoid all demonstrations. Police can use tear gas and water cannons to control public protests.

Protecting yourself and your belongings

Bag-snatching is common, particularly in major cities. Thieves on motorbikes can target tourists. They can cut straps or pull off bags carried on the shoulder closest to the road. They have sometimes pulled people to the ground and killed or injured them if they try to hold onto their bags.

To protect yourself from petty crime, avoid carrying valuables and take particular care of your passport while:

  • walking
  • in cafes
  • on aircraft
  • in airport and railway terminals
  • at hotels

Credit card and ATM fraud is widespread. Take care when using your card.

Personal security

There have been assaults and robberies, particularly around bars and nightlife areas. Do not open your hotel room door to strangers, especially late at night. This applies particularly to women travelling alone.

Drink spiking

There have been cases of strangers offering tourists a spiked drink, even in reputable bars or restaurants, and then…

You must abide by local laws. Learn about what you should do and how we can help if you are arrested or detained abroad.

Laws

Some aspects of Shari’a (Islamic) law have been introduced in Malaysia. Muslim travellers may be subject to these laws. In some states, such as Kelantan and Terengganu, particularly strict regulations on alcohol and public decency can be applied. Religious preaching to Muslims, including distributing non-Islamic religious materials, is illegal.

Drugs

Penalties for possession, use or trafficking of illegal drugs are severe. Convicted offenders can face the death penalty. Possession of as little as 15 grams of some prohibited substances will be considered trafficking. Drugs, alcohol and travel

Identification

You must carry photo identification, such as your passport. Keep a photocopy of your passport in a safe place, in case it’s lost or confiscated.

Driving

Traffic drives on the left. Canadian driver’s licenses are valid in Malaysia and can be used locally for a period of 3 months. After this time, you can either drive with an international driving permit, or apply for a Malaysian driver’s license at a certified driving institute.

Seat belts are mandatory. Penalties for drinking and driving are severe. Convicted offenders can expect fines or imprisonment and could have their driver's licence suspended or revoked. The use of cellular phones while driving is prohibited. It is common to receive on the spot fines for disobeying traffic laws.

Marine transportation

Foreign vessels travelling in the waters off Sabah are subject to Malaysian law and must use routes designated by Malaysian authorities. Vessels must also fly both a Malaysian flag and the flag of their home country.

2SLGBTQI+ persons

The laws of Malaysia prohibit sexual acts between individuals of the same sex, and transgender individuals have been arrested. 2SLGBTQI+ persons should carefully consider the risks of travelling to Malaysia. Travel and your sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. It does not apply between Canada and Malaysia. If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Malaysia by an abducting parent:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Malaysia to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies. Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Culture

The majority of the population is Muslim. Dress conservatively, behave discreetly and avoid discussions on race or religion.

Ramadan

In 2027, the lunar month of Ramadan is expected to begin on or around February 7. In public, between sunrise and sunset, be discreet when:

  • drinking
  • eating
  • smoking
Money

The currency is the ringgit (MYR). Some major hotels don’t accept credit cards. ATMs are readily available across the country. A special permit is required to bring in more than US$10,000 in the form of cash or other negotiable items. Without the permit, excess amounts are seized upon arrival. Visitors may leave the country with only the amount of currency declared on the Traveller’s Declaration Form on arrival.

Foreign Office — laws and cultural differences

Local laws

Malaysia is a multicultural, majority Muslim country. Respect local laws, cultures, traditions and religions. If you’re a Muslim, you may be subject to local Sharia law.

Personal ID

By law you must carry ID. Always carry your passport.

Dress code

Dress modestly, particularly in conservative and rural areas. You may be refused entry to places of worship or government offices if you do not have your shoulders and knees covered or are not wearing closed shoes. Check the signs displayed at the entrance.

Ramadan

Ramadan is a holy month for Muslims. The dates vary by year and country. In Malaysia, Ramadan will take place in March 2025. During this time, you should:

  • check opening hours of shops and restaurants
  • follow local dress codes – clothing that does not meet local dress codes may cause more offence at this time
  • be aware of the risks of dehydration and that fasting can cause tiredness, particularly during the later afternoon and early evening

Get more advice when you arrive from your tour guide, hotel or business contacts.

Illegal drugs penalties

Possession, trafficking and manufacture of any illegal drugs are serious offences in Malaysia. This includes cannabis. British nationals have been caught carrying cannabis while transiting through Malaysia. Airports in Malaysia have security equipment and procedures in place for scanning and detecting illegal substances, including cannabis. This is also used to scan all carry-on and checked-in baggage of transiting passengers. The Malaysian authorities have a zero-tolerance policy to drug offences. Possessing drugs, even in very small quantities, carries severe penalties, including:

  • arrest and detention
  • a long jail sentence if charged and convicted
  • a possible whipping
  • a possible death sentence by hanging for drug trafficking

Legal processes before court hearings can be long and expensive. It can take many months for a case to go to trial and time served ahead of that will not be included as part of the sentence. Criminal gangs in the UK and elsewhere are known to coerce people into carrying drugs across borders. Do not allow yourself to be persuaded. It is important to be aware of your rights if you are detained by the police. See our guidance for those detained or imprisoned in Malaysia. Police often raid venues known to be frequented by foreigners. You may have to take a urine or blood test if there is a reasonable suspicion you have used drugs. You will be arrested if the test is positive.

LGBT+ travellers

Same-sex sexual acts are illegal in Malaysia under federal law. The Malaysian authorities sometimes carry out raids on LGBT+ spaces and events. Showing affection in public could attract negative responses from other members of the public. Openly LGBT+ safe spaces and support groups exist. Read more advice for LGBT+ travellers.

FDFA (Switzerland) — laws and customs, in French

Specific legal provisions

  • des déclarations (également sur les réseaux sociaux) ou des actes faisant injure ou dénigrant l’Etat, ses institutions, la famille royale, ses hauts représentants ou ses symboles, tels que le drapeau national, sous quelque forme que ce soit ;
  • les actes à caractère homosexuel ;

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Malaysia’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Malaysia set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Malaysian High Commission in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

To enter Malaysia, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive. Make sure it is undamaged, with no pages missing.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

Malaysia does not recognise dual nationality. You can be refused entry if you’re found with a Malaysian passport and one of a different nationality. If you have dual nationality (not including Malaysian), enter and exit on the same passport.

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

You can visit Malaysia without a visa for tourism. You will normally be allowed to stay for 90 days on arrival.

If you want to stay for longer than 90 days or are not a tourist, you must apply for a visa from the nearest Malaysian diplomatic mission before you travel.

The Malaysian authorities do not tolerate illegal immigration. Do not overstay your visa or violate the terms of entry. Even if you overstay for just a few days, you can be:

  • fined
  • detained
  • deported to the UK at your own cost
  • banned from returning to Malaysia

Detention facilities can be poor with limited healthcare. The British High Commission is unable to help you stay in Malaysia or issue any document to support your overstay.

Keep a copy of your passport and visa safe in case your passport is lost. It may take time to get a replacement visa. If you cannot show your original visa or entry stamp on exit, you may be treated as an overstayer.

Submitting an arrival card

You must submit an arrival card online to enter Malaysia. Do this before you travel – airlines may ask for it at check-in. If you are not passing through immigration, you do not need to complete an arrival card. See the Malaysian Immigration website for further information, including exemption details.

Entering East Malaysia

If you’re travelling between Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia (sometimes known as Malaysian Borneo and made up of the states of Sabah and Sarawak), you must carry your passport. You will pass through immigration control and must get entry and exit stamps.

Vaccine requirements

To enter Malaysia, you must have a certificate to prove you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination if you’re coming from a country listed as a transmission risk .

For full details about medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, see TravelHealthPro’s Malaysia guide .

Drug screening

The Malaysian authorities could ask you to take a urine test on…

Transport and infrastructure

The health system — With 2.3 physicians per 1,000 people (49% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover. Health spending of 450 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.

What are the entry requirements for Malaysia with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): French nationals visiting Malaysia for under 90 days need no visa for peninsular Malaysia and Sabah, but must hold a passport valid for at least six months beyond departure and a return ticket. All travellers to Malaysia must complete and validate the Malaysian Digital Arrival Card online within three days before arrival, accessible at https://imigresen-online.imi.gov.my/mdac/main, since 1 December 2023. Travellers entering Malaysia by sea or land must ensure an immigration officer stamps their passport upon arrival to avoid administrative detention of up to 14 days during departure.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): Your British passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date in Malaysia, undamaged with no missing pages. British citizens may visit Malaysia visa-free for tourism and stay up to ninety days on arrival without applying in advance. You must submit an arrival card online before travelling to Malaysia; airlines may request it at check-in.

Can I be treated in Malaysia, or will I be evacuated?

2.3 physicians per 1,000 people (2023) versus 4.5 in Switzerland.

  • 2.0 hospital beds per 1,000 people versus 4.4 in Switzerland (World Bank).
  • With 2.3 physicians per 1,000 people (49% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover. Health spending of 450 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.
  • When the local facility is not enough, Maximum's medical team decides the evacuation to a suitable centre, and pays for it (art. 6.2.2).

Malaysia: safety, in figures?

0.7 homicides per 100,000 people (2023) versus 0.6 in Switzerland and 1.3 in France.

  • 22.5 road deaths per 100,000 people versus 2.2 in Switzerland (World Bank, WHO).
  • The homicide rate is in the same range as Switzerland or France. On the road, 10 times more deaths than in Switzerland: road crashes are the leading cause of death of healthy travellers (CDC) — seat belt, no night driving, a driver or a taxi from a rank.

Which laws and customs should I know in Malaysia?

Local laws apply to every traveller; here is what the official texts say.

  • You must carry your passport at all times and keep a photocopy separately, as photo identification is legally required in Malaysia.
  • Possession of 15 grams or more of prohibited substances is considered trafficking and carries the death penalty; Malaysia has zero tolerance for all drug offences.
  • Canadian driver's licenses are valid for three months; after that, you need an international driving permit or Malaysian license. Seat belts are mandatory and mobile phone use while driving is prohibited.
  • You must declare cash or negotiable instruments exceeding US$10,000 on arrival; excess amounts without a permit are seized, and you may only leave with declared currency.
  • Sexual acts between same-sex individuals are illegal; 2SLGBTQI+ persons should carefully consider the risks of travelling to Malaysia.
