How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

It is recommended for travelers who plan on eating street food.

Hepatitis BCDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers of all ages traveling to Luxembourg.

MeaslesCDC ↗

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

MonkeypoxCDC ↗

Monkeypox vaccination is recommended for any adult who anticipates any of the following activities during travel: Sexual or intimate contact with a new partner Sexual or intimate contact at a commercial sex venue, like a sex club or bathhouse Sexual or intimate contact in exchange for money, goods, drugs, or other trade Sexual or intimate contact in association with a large public event, such as a rave, party, or…

RabiesCDC ↗

Dogs infected with rabies are not commonly found in Luxembourg. If rabies exposures occur while in Luxembourg, rabies vaccines are typically available throughout most of the country.

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult your GP or an international vaccination centre to assess health needs and receive travel-specific recommendations, including vaccinations; consider a dental check-up before departure. France Diplomatie
  • Pack a personal pharmacy with only essential medicines in original packaging with original labels and an international non-proprietary name prescription; verify medication legality in the destination country. France Diplomatie
  • Ensure routine French vaccinations are up to date before travel, including diphtheria, tetanus, polio, whooping cough, and measles; carry your vaccination record as it may be requested on arrival. France Diplomatie
  • Protect against tick bites in rural and forested areas; check skin thoroughly after outdoor activities and consult a doctor if a rash appears around a tick bite. France Diplomatie
  • British nationals must confirm destination healthcare availability and secure travel insurance covering local treatment and medical evacuation; dial 112 for an ambulance or request SAMU for a doctor-led response. Foreign Office
  • British travellers need a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for medically necessary state healthcare in Luxembourg, but this does not replace travel insurance. Foreign Office

Health — Foreign Office

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Dial 112 and ask for an ambulance.

If you ask for a SAMU (‘Service d’Aide Medicale Urgente’), a doctor will come with an ambulance.

Contact your insurance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

  • check the latest vaccine recommendations for Luxembourg
  • see where to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

See what health risks you’ll face in Luxembourg .

Medication

The legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can be different in other countries.

Read best practice when travelling with medicines on TravelHealthPro .

Healthcare in Luxembourg

FCDO has a list of medical providers in Luxembourg where some staff will speak English.

Health insurance cards

To get medically necessary state healthcare in Luxembourg, you need a Global Health Insurance Card ( GHIC ) or a European Health Insurance Card ( EHIC ).

The NHS’s getting healthcare abroad webpage has details about:

  • how to apply for a GHIC
  • how to get temporary cover if you lose your card or it does not arrive in time
  • who qualifies for a new EHIC instead of a GHIC
  • what treatment counts as medically necessary

A GHIC or EHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance. You may have costs your GHIC or EHIC does not cover, including:

  • changes to travel and accommodation bookings
  • additional standard costs for treatment
  • medical repatriation to the UK
  • treatment that is ruled non-urgent
  • private healthcare
  • private clinics

There is also guidance on healthcare if you’re living in Luxembourg .

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Luxembourg

Terrorist attacks in Luxembourg cannot be ruled out.

Crime

Violent crime is not common in Luxembourg cities. However, violent robberies have happened.

Report any thefts in person to the nearest police station within 24 hours and get a police report crime number for insurance purposes.

Protecting your belongings

Pickpockets operate on buses and in train stations, particularly in the main train station, Gare de Luxembourg. Hotel lobbies in the Findel area are reported to be hotspots for thefts and pickpocketing. To reduce your risk:

  • do not keep your passport, credit cards and other valuables in the same place
  • keep your belongings close to you in restaurants and bars
  • avoid being distracted around tourist attractions and ATMs
Scams

Scammers can target foreign visitors and residents. Be cautious and make sure you have all the information you need before you provide any personal or bank details.

Alcohol laws

The minimum legal drinking age is 16. Being drunk and disorderly in public is a criminal offence that can result in arrest for a night and a heavy fine.

Illegal drugs

Illegal drugs, including cannabis, carry severe penalties. You should expect a long jail sentence and heavy fines for possessing, using or smuggling illegal drugs, including when transiting through the airport.

The airport in Luxembourg has excellent technology and security for detecting illegal items. This is also used to scan the baggage of transiting passengers.

Road travel

If you are planning to drive in Luxembourg, see information on driving abroad and check the rules of the road in the RAC’s Luxembourg guide . The guide lists driving regulations and other legal requirements you need to be aware of.

The Luxembourg authorities strictly enforce road traffic laws. You can get a fine for minor violations.

You can use a UK photocard driving licence to drive in Luxembourg for one year. If you still have a paper driving licence, you may need to update it to a photocard licence or get the correct version of the international driving permit ( IDP ) as well. The minimum age for driving a car is 18.

Within one year of taking up residence in Luxembourg, you must convert your UK licence into a Luxembourg licence. See guidance on driving if you live in Luxembourg .

Hire car companies often have stricter requirements for their customers, such as a year of driving experience, a higher minimum age and holding an IDP .

You must carry these documents in the vehicle or face a fine:

  • driving licence
  • vehicle registration document
  • car insurance certificate
  • road tax
  • MOT certificate

Carry your passport because it’s easy to cross into neighbouring countries without realising it.

Drink-driving is a serious offence in Luxembourg. The blood alcohol limit for experienced drivers is 0.05% (in England it’s 0.08%). If you’ve had your licence less than 2 years, the limit is 0.02%. You could get a fine and possible imprisonment if you’re caught over the limit.

Your vehicle must have regulation winter tyres if you…

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. The convention applies between Canada and Luxembourg. If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Luxembourg, and if the applicable conditions are met, you may apply for the return of your child to the Luxembourgish court. If you are in this situation:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • contact the Central Authority for your province or territory of residence for information on starting an application under The Hague Convention
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Luxembourg to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children's Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies. Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Driving

You must be at least 18 years old to drive in Luxembourg. You can drive using a valid Canadian driver’s licence for up to 12 months. You must carry an international driving permit. If you become a legal resident of Luxembourg, you will need a local driver’s licence, which you must obtain within 12 months of becoming a resident. To exchange your Canadian driver’s licence, you need a certified criminal record check, which you must obtain from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police before you leave Canada. Penalties for drinking and driving are severe. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.02% for commercial and learner drivers and 0.05% for others. Police regularly conduct sobriety checks. Convicted offenders can expect:

  • license suspension
  • heavy fines
  • a jail sentence

You should always have a blank accident report in your vehicle. If you are involved in a car accident that does not result in injury, you must exchange details with the drivers involved and complete the accident report before submitting it to your insurance company. If you are involved in a car accident that results in injury or dispute, immediately report it to the police, who will officially assess the situation.

Mandatory equipment

From October to April, cars in Luxembourg must be equipped with winter or all-weather tires marked with ‘M.S.,’ ‘M+S,’ ‘M&S,’ or the alpine symbol, regardless of the vehicle’s country of registration. You must always keep a warning triangle sign and a brightly colored driver’s vest in your vehicle. Luxembourg authorities strictly enforce all road traffic laws, and police regularly conduct random road checks. You could be fined for minor infractions.

Money

The currency of Luxembourg is the euro (EUR). If you are carrying €10,000 or more, or the equivalent in other currencies or monetary instruments, you must make a declaration to customs when you enter or leave the European Union. This does not apply if you are travelling within the European Union or in transit to a non-EU country. EU Cash Controls – European Commission

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of the current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Luxembourg set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Luxembourg Embassy in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

Luxembourg follows Schengen area rules . Your passport must:

- have a ‘date of issue’ less than 10 years before the date you arrive – if you renewed your passport before 1 October 2018, it might have a date of issue that is more than 10 years ago, making it invalid for entry to the Schengen area

- have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area (the expiry date does not need to be within 10 years of the date of issue)

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

You can travel without a visa to the Schengen area , which includes Luxembourg, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This applies if you travel:

  • as a tourist
  • to visit family or friends
  • to attend business meetings, cultural or sports events
  • for short-term studies or training

The requirements for working in Luxembourg are different.

If you’re travelling to other Schengen countries as well, make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day limit. Visits to Schengen countries in the 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days. If you overstay the 90-day visa-free limit, you may be banned from entering Schengen countries for up to 3 years.

At Luxembourg border control, you may also need to:

  • show proof of your accommodation, for example, a hotel booking confirmation or proof of address for a second home
  • show proof of your travel insurance
  • show a return or onward ticket
  • prove that you have enough money for your stay – the amount varies depending on your accommodation
Staying longer than 90 days in a 180-day period

To stay longer, you must meet the Luxembourg government’s entry requirements. Check which type of visa or permit you need with the Luxembourg Embassy in the UK .

If you’re in Luxembourg with a residence permit or long-stay visa, this does not count towards your 90-day visa-free limit.

Read about entry processes if you live in Luxembourg .

New Schengen entry requirements

The European Union’s (EU) new Entry/Exit System (EES) is now being implemented across the Schengen area.

This means that when you travel into the Schengen area for short stays, you may need to register your biometric details, such as fingerprints and a photo. There is no cost for EES registration.

On your first visit into a Schengen country, you may be asked to register your details at a special booth before proceeding to the immigration…

Frequently asked questions — travel insurance Luxembourg

What is the official risk level in Luxembourg today?

Level 1/4 — Exercise Normal Precautions, U.S. Department of State, retrieved on 31 October 2026.

  • Is the whole country advised against? United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no (reading of 24 October 2026).
  • Contractually, only an FDFA, FOPH or WHO advisory against the trip opens Module A (art. 18.1) — that is not the case today.
  • Travel with international medical cover and the 24/7 number (+41 22 ••• •• ••) saved: here the risk is not the advisory, it is the hospital bill.
  • We check these sources every morning and e-mail you the day one changes (Alerts button).

Is the whole of Luxembourg advised against, or only some areas?

An area advised against does not rule out the country.

  • Official answers: United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no.
  • Keep your country of residence's advisory on booking day and on departure day: that is what your policy's clauses cite.

What are the entry requirements for Luxembourg with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): French nationals may enter Luxembourg for stays under 3 months with a valid passport or French national identity card (CNI). For stays over 3 months, French nationals must declare arrival within 8 days and apply for a registration certificate within 3 months at their local commune office (Bierger-Center in Luxembourg City). To obtain the registration certificate, applicants must prove sufficient resources, employment, or professional/academic training; part-time work under 10 hours weekly is insufficient.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British citizens must ensure their passport was issued less than 10 years before arrival and expires at least 3 months after the planned Schengen exit date to enter Luxembourg. Entry to Luxembourg may be denied if the passport has been reported lost or stolen or does not meet Schengen validity rules. British citizens can visit Luxembourg and other Schengen countries visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period for tourism, family visits, business, cultural events, or short studies.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a Luxembourg visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (EUR 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.
  • Attach it to the visa file; if in doubt about the format, write to us.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Luxembourg?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — No area exclusion at this level — compare cap, deductible and covered duration.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.
  • Have your IPID number or the PDF of the terms and ask an expert to call you back: the answer is in the document, not in the brochure.

Which laws and customs should I know in Luxembourg?

Local laws apply to every traveller; here is what the official texts say.

  • You must comply with local laws in Luxembourg; learn about consular assistance if arrested or detained abroad.
  • Possession, use or trafficking of illegal drugs in Luxembourg can lead to prison sentences or heavy fines; never transport others’ luggage and monitor your own closely.
  • If your child was wrongfully taken to or held in Luxembourg, apply quickly to the Luxembourgish court under the Hague Convention; contact your provincial Central Authority and report to the Emergency Watch and Response Centre.
  • From October to April, vehicles in Luxembourg must have winter or all-weather tyres marked ‘M.S.,’ ‘M+S,’ ‘M&S’ or the alpine symbol, plus a warning triangle and a high-visibility vest; random police checks are common.
  • If carrying €10,000 or more in cash or equivalents, declare it to customs when entering or leaving the EU; this does not apply to intra-EU travel or transit to non-EU countries.
