How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

Health — Foreign Office

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Dial 112 and ask for an ambulance.

Contact your insurance or medical assistance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

If you’re feeling unwell, but it’s not an emergency, call:

  • Mainland Portugal: (+351) 808 24 24 24, press 9 for English. If you have hearing loss and cannot hear on the phone, you can make contact by videocall or webchat (Portuguese language website).
  • Madeira and Porto Santo: (+351) 800 24 24 20
  • Azores: (+351) 808 24 60 24
Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

  • check the latest vaccine information for Portugal
  • see where to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

See what health risks you’ll face in Portugal .

Medication

The legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can be different in other countries.

Read best practice when travelling with medicines on TravelHealthPro .

Changes to your routine when travelling, such as later nights, coping with heat and changes to your diet can have an impact on your medication. See the Summer Proof Your Health campaign for more information.

There are strict rules around dispensing certain medicines in Portugal, including antibiotics. Keep any medication you bring or are prescribed in the original container with the prescription label.

UK prescriptions are not recognised in Portugal. Carry enough medication for your visit and keep a few days’ supply in your hand luggage in case your checked-in baggage is delayed or lost.

If you need a repeat prescription, go to the nearest health centre or hospital A&E. You may have to pay for your medication.

You will need to go to a pharmacy to get most medicines, though some non-prescription medication is sold at health stores in supermarkets and shopping centres. Find a pharmacy on the Pharmacy Association website .

Healthcare in Portugal

FCDO has a list of medical providers in Portugal, where some staff will speak English.

Health insurance cards

To get medically necessary state healthcare in Portugal, you need a Global Health Insurance Card ( GHIC ) or a European Health Insurance Card ( EHIC ).

The NHS’s getting healthcare abroad has details about:

  • how to apply for a GHIC
  • how to get temporary cover if you lose your card or it does not arrive in time
  • who qualifies for a new EHIC instead of a GHIC
  • what treatment counts as medically necessary

A GHIC or EHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance. You may have costs your GHIC or EHIC does not cover, including:

  • changes to travel and accommodation bookings
  • additional standard costs for treatment
  • medical repatriation to the UK
  • treatment that is ruled non-urgent
  • private healthcare
  • private clinics

There is also guidance on healthcare if you’re living in Portugal .

  • conserver une version numérique de ses documents d’identité et titres de voyages ;
  • faire preuve de vigilance, dès l’arrivée à l’aéroport ainsi que dans le métro ou le bus qui assurent la liaison avec le centre-ville ;
  • laisser les originaux de ses documents de voyage (billets d’avion, passeport, etc.) à l’hôtel, dans un coffre, et privilégier l’utilisation de photocopies pour se déplacer ;
  • conserver les sacs près du corps (devant), en vérifiant que toutes les poches sont bien fermées ;
  • se méfier de tout stratagème de distraction visant à détourner l’attention (sollicitation pour prise de photo, « bousculade » feinte dans le tramway par exemple) ;
  • disposer d’une somme d’argent en espèces sur soi, mais en quantité raisonnable et répartie en plusieurs endroits ;
  • à la plage, à l’hôtel ou au restaurant, éviter de laisser des bagages ou des objets de valeur à vue dans la voiture ;
  • à la plage, n’emporter que le minimum et garder ses effets personnels sous surveillance ;
  • faire preuve de la plus grande vigilance dans l’utilisation des cartes de crédit : privilégier les distributeurs situés à l’intérieur des agences ; dans les commerces et restaurants, veiller à ne pas perdre sa carte bancaire de vue lors du paiement ;

  • être convenablement équipé (sac à dos, bonnes chaussures de marche, vêtements adaptés) ;
  • se munir d’une lampe de poche ;
  • emporter avec soi de l’eau et de la nourriture ;
  • signaler son départ et son itinéraire à l’hôtel de départ et/ou à des proches ;
  • ne pas s’écarter des sentiers de randonnée balisés ;

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Portugal

Terrorist attacks in Portugal cannot be ruled out.

Political Demonstrations

Demonstrations, political gatherings and marches are not uncommon, particularly in cities. While most demonstrations are peaceful, if you are near areas where they are taking place, you should remain aware of what is happening around you and follow the advice of the police and local authorities.

Strike action

Strike action that causes travel disruption, including at airports, can take place. Strikes can be announced at short notice. For updates on any disruption that may affect your travel plans, check the local news and follow the advice of your travel provider or tour operator.

Protecting yourself and your belongings

Be alert to the risk of street crime. Take care on public transport and at crowded bus and tram stops. Thieves use distraction techniques and often work in teams. Look after your passport, money and personal belongings when travelling, checking in luggage at the airport or arranging car hire.

Do not carry all your valuables in one place. Keep a copy of the photo pages of your passport somewhere safe.

Make sure your accommodation has adequate security. Lock all doors and windows at night and when you go out. If you’re concerned about the security of your accommodation, speak to your tour operator or property owner, or contact the local police force:

- Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP) – the public security police force that covers cities

- Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) – the national guard that covers smaller towns and rural areas

Attacks and sexual assault

Attacks including sexual assaults, are rare but do occur. The risk is highest late at night around popular nightlife locations. In an emergency, call 112.

Avoid splitting up from your friends, do not go off with people you don’t know and don’t let a friend walk back to their accommodation alone. Set up a group chat to keep in touch. Save the location of your accommodation on your maps app, so it’s easy to find or take a photograph of the name and address of your accommodation. For further tips and advice, see TravelAware ‘Stick with your mates’ and getting help if you are a victim of crime abroad .

Drink spiking and alcohol

Be alert to the possible use of ‘date rape’ and other drugs including GHB and liquid ecstasy.

Buy your own drinks and always keep them in sight to avoid them being spiked. Alcohol and drugs can reduce your vigilance, making you less in control. If you drink, know your limit. Drinks served in bars in Portugal are often stronger than those in the UK.

Personal ID

You must provide photo ID if asked by a police officer. The police have the right to hold you at a police station until they have confirmed your identity. It is mandatory to carry ID when driving.

Gambling

Gambling is only legal in places licensed by the government, such as official casinos. Games of chance, including bingo, are illegal if they’re held on unlicensed premises.

The police may act on reports of illegal gambling in unauthorised premises…

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. The convention applies between Canada and Portugal. If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Portugal, and if the applicable conditions are met, you may apply for the return of your child to the Portuguese court. If you are in this situation:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • contact the Central Authority for your province or territory of residence for information on starting an application under The Hague Convention
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Portugal to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children's Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies. Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

  • car seizure
  • heavy fines
  • a jail sentence

You must use low-beam headlights at all times. If you are involved in a car accident, do not move the vehicle and immediately report it to the police. You must exchange details with the drivers involved and complete the accident report “Declaração Amigável” before submitting it to your insurance company.

Mandatory equipment

Children up to 135 cm tall or under 12 years old must ride in appropriate car seats. You must always keep a reflective vest and a warning triangle in your vehicle. In case of car trouble or an accident, switch on the hazard lights, wear the reflective vest and place the warning triangle at least 30 metres behind the vehicle. Photography

Photographing the police, the military or sensitive installations is prohibited. It is also illegal to film or photograph the public without their consent. Seek permission before taking photos of official buildings or individuals.

Money

The currency of Portugal is the euro (EUR). If you are carrying €10,000 or more, or the equivalent in other currencies or monetary instruments, you must make a declaration to customs when you enter or leave the European Union.

The police may act on reports of illegal gambling in unauthorised premises without warning. You could be arrested, charged and fined or given a prison sentence. If in doubt, ask if the venue is licensed.

Illegal drugs

Illegal drugs, including cannabis, carry severe penalties. You should expect a long jail sentence and heavy fines for smuggling illegal drugs, including when transiting through the airport. Airports in Portugal have excellent technology and security for detecting illegal items. This is also used to scan the baggage of transiting passengers.

Local laws governing public behaviour in Albufeira

The municipality of Albufeira has introduced a Code of Conduct which bans inappropriate behaviour in public places. Check out the rules that are now in force. If you break the rules, you could be fined on the spot from between 150 and 1800 euros.

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of the current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Portugal set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Portuguese Embassy in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

Portugal follows Schengen area rules . Your passport must:

- have a ‘date of issue’ less than 10 years before the date you arrive – if you renewed your passport before 1 October 2018, it might have a date of issue that is more than 10 years ago, making it invalid for entry to the Schengen area

- have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area (the expiry date does not need to be within 10 years of the date of issue)

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has either been reported lost or stolen or is damaged.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

You can travel without a visa to the Schengen area , which includes Portugal, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This applies if you travel:

  • as a tourist
  • to visit family or friends
  • to attend business meetings, cultural or sports events
  • for short-term studies or training

The requirements for working in Portugal are different.

If you’re travelling to other Schengen countries as well, make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day visa-free limit. Visits to Schengen countries in the 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days. If you overstay the 90-day visa-free limit, you may be banned from entering Schengen countries for up to 3 years.

At Portuguese border control you may need to show:

  • an onward or return ticket
  • proof you have enough money for your visit
Staying longer than 90 days in a 180-day period

If you’re visiting Portugal and need to extend your visa-free stay for exceptional reasons, such as a medical emergency, you must apply to AIMA using their contact form (access is only available to users in Portugal) . This does not apply to you if you’re the holder of a residence permit or long stay visa.

Read about entry processes if you live in Portugal .

New Schengen entry requirements

The European Union’s (EU) new Entry/Exit System ( EES ) is now being implemented across the Schengen area.

This means that when you travel into the Schengen area for short stays, you may need to register your biometric details, such as fingerprints and a photo. There is no cost for EES registration.

On your first visit into a Schengen country, you may be asked to register your details at a special booth before proceeding to the immigration desk. Follow directions from your travel operator or the staff at your port of entry. You may also need to provide either your fingerprint or photo when you leave the Schengen…

What are the entry requirements for Portugal with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): French nationals and minors need a valid passport or national identity card to enter Portugal; birth certificates and family records are not travel documents. Minors travelling without parents must carry identity documents; consult the French embassy in Lisbon website for specific requirements. Travellers transiting through Portuguese airports to non-Schengen destinations must verify entry requirements for their final destination beforehand, as some countries require minimum passport validity.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British citizens need a passport issued less than 10 years before arrival and valid for at least 3 months after departure from the Schengen area to enter Portugal. British citizens may travel visa-free to Portugal for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism, visiting family, business meetings, or short-term studies. Overstaying the 90-day visa-free limit in Schengen countries may result in a ban from entering Schengen countries for up to 3 years.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a Portugal visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (CHF 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.
  • Attach it to the visa file; if in doubt about the format, write to us.

Is an Amex, Visa or Mastercard enough in Portugal?

At today's level 1/4, card by card:

  • Amex Platinum — No area exclusion at this level — but three written limits: deductible and prior approval, 90-day cap, advance under conditions.
  • Visa — No express area exclusion — but a €156,000 cap, 90 days, and the war/instability exclusion in the background.
  • Mastercard — No exclusion in play at this level — but a €155,000 cap and 90 covered days.
  • Three lines to read in your notice: the duration (often 90 days per trip), the settlement (reimbursement afterwards or direct payment of the hospital) and the area exclusion at level 4/4.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Portugal?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — No area exclusion at this level — compare cap, deductible and covered duration.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.
  • Have your IPID number or the PDF of the terms and ask an expert to call you back: the answer is in the document, not in the brochure.

Can I be treated in Portugal, or will I be evacuated?

5.8 physicians per 1,000 people (2022) versus 4.5 in Switzerland.

  • 3.5 hospital beds per 1,000 people versus 4.4 in Switzerland (World Bank).
  • Medical density above Switzerland: the question is not capacity, it is the bill. Health spending of 2,971 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.
  • When the local facility is not enough, Maximum's medical team decides the evacuation to a suitable centre, and pays for it (art. 6.2.2).

Portugal: safety, in figures?

0.7 homicides per 100,000 people (2022) versus 0.6 in Switzerland and 1.3 in France.

  • 8.2 road deaths per 100,000 people versus 2.2 in Switzerland (World Bank, WHO).
  • The homicide rate is in the same range as Switzerland or France. On the road, 4 times more deaths than in Switzerland: road crashes are the leading cause of death of healthy travellers (CDC) — seat belt, no night driving, a driver or a taxi from a rank.
