How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult a doctor or international vaccination center for health assessments and recommendations, including vaccinations, at least eight weeks before travel.
  • Carry necessary personal medications in their original packaging with an international common name prescription, and verify their legality in the destination country.
  • Ensure all French vaccinations are up-to-date, particularly for diphtheria, tetanus, polio, and measles, as vaccination records may be requested upon arrival.
  • Consider vaccination against tick-borne encephalitis if visiting rural or wooded areas, and take precautions against tick bites and mosquito bites.
  • For medically necessary state healthcare in Austria, present a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which is not a substitute for travel insurance.
  • If you regularly take medication, bring a sufficient supply and check regulations for importing narcotics or psychotropic substances with the relevant foreign representation.

Health — Foreign Office

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Dial 112 and ask for an ambulance.

Contact your insurance or medical assistance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

  • check the latest vaccine recommendations for Austria
  • see where to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

See what health risks you’ll face in Austria , including tick-borne diseases.

Altitude sickness is a risk in parts of Austria. Read more about altitude sickness on TravelHealthPro .

Medication

The legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can be different in other countries.

Read best practice when travelling with medicines on TravelHealthPro .

Healthcare in Austria

FCDO has a list of medical providers in Austria where some staff will speak English.

Health insurance cards

To get medically necessary state healthcare in Austria, you need a Global Health Insurance Card ( GHIC ) or a European Health Insurance Card ( EHIC ).

The NHS’s getting healthcare abroad webpage has details about:

  • how to apply for a GHIC
  • how to get temporary cover if you lose your card or it does not arrive in time
  • who qualifies for a new EHIC instead of a GHIC
  • what treatment counts as medically necessary

A GHIC or EHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance. You may have costs your GHIC or EHIC does not cover, including:

  • changes to travel and accommodation bookings
  • additional standard costs for treatment
  • medical repatriation to the UK
  • treatment that is ruled non-urgent
  • private healthcare
  • private clinics

There is also guidance on healthcare if you’re living in Austria .

Travel and mental health

In brief
  • The entire country is at normal security vigilance, but pickpocketing is increasing in Vienna's 1st district and on public transport.
  • Natural risks like avalanches and floods are managed by local authorities; citizens should check weather conditions and follow safety rules, especially in mountains.
  • Terrorism risk cannot be excluded in Austria, similar to other EU capitals.
  • Do not carry all your money and documents in one bag; keep your passport and cash securely, and travel with a photocopy.
  • For mountaineering, check weather and avalanche conditions, ensure equipment is adequate, and verify insurance covers helicopter rescue or repatriation.
  • Helmets are mandatory for skiers and snowboarders under 15 in most Austrian provinces.

Alpinisme

Il est recommandé de :

  • S’informer des conditions climatiques, des conditions d’enneigement, d’éventuels risques d’avalanche auprès des professionnels des sports d’hiver et des offices du tourisme. Des renseignements actualisés sur les risques d’avalanches sont disponibles à l’adresse internet : https://www.lawine.at/ ;
  • Pour plus d’information : http://www.preventionete.sports.gouv.fr/IMG/pdf/PreventionEte2017_100x145_FR.pdf ;

In brief
  • Travel to Austria is generally considered safe, but authorities warn of a risk of terrorist attacks, especially in crowded places like restaurants and religious institutions.
  • Exercise caution against petty crime and follow the advice of Austrian police, as drugs may be administered in food, drinks, or cigarettes.
  • Motorways and expressways in Austria require a toll sticker (Maut-Vignette) for use, and public transport networks are well-developed.
  • Heavy rainfall can cause floods and landslides, potentially disrupting traffic, and there is a risk of forest fires in many areas.
  • Follow the recommendations of local authorities and stay informed about potential risks through systems like AT-Alert.

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Austria

Terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Austria.

Terrorism attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by foreign nationals such as:

  • public transport
  • national and international transport hubs
  • music, sporting and cultural events
  • entertainment establishments and nightlife venues
  • government buildings and international institutions
  • places of worship and religious sites

You should be vigilant in public places and follow the advice of local authorities.

Recent examples include:

  • on 15 February 2025, one person was killed and five injured in central Villach, Carinthia, southern Austria in a knife attack
  • on 2 November 2020, four people were killed and 23 injured in a terrorism-related shooting in central Vienna

The Austrian authorities have successfully disrupted various attack plans, making a number of arrests in recent years. You can expect to see an increased police presence, and additional safety measures may be in place. Be aware of your surroundings and follow the advice of local authorities.

Political demonstrations

Demonstrations may happen with little or no warning in cities. Follow the advice of local authorities.

Crime

Crime levels are generally low. However, there are higher levels of petty crime, particularly pickpocketing, in the big city centres and city parks after dark. Thieves use a variety of methods to distract people.

Protecting your belongings

Take care on public transport and in crowded city centres, including main stations. Be particularly careful with your belongings on international trains and when you take your baggage from trains and coaches.

Drink spiking

Drinks served in bars overseas are often stronger than those in the UK. Be careful about taking drinks from strangers or leaving your drinks unattended. Criminals have robbed and assaulted people after spiking their drinks.

Personal ID

By law, you must always have easy access to your passport. If you do not carry your passport, you must be able to get it quickly. It can be helpful to carry a copy of the photo page. The Austrian authorities do not accept a UK driving licence as official ID.

Illegal drugs

Illegal drugs, including cannabis, carry severe penalties.

You should expect a long jail sentence and heavy fines for possessing, using or smuggling illegal drugs, including when transiting through the airport.

Airports in Austria have excellent technology and security for detecting illegal items. This is also used to scan the baggage of transiting passengers.

Face-covering ban

It’s generally illegal to wear any clothing or object in public that covers your face. You could get a fine of up to 150 euros. See information on Austria’s face-covering ban , including a list of exemptions.

Public transport

You must validate your ticket in a ticket machine before starting a journey on public transport. If you do not, you could get a 100 to 500 euro on-the-spot fine.

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. The convention applies between Canada and Austria. If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Austria, and if the applicable conditions are met, you may apply for the return of your child to the Austrian court. If you are in this situation:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • contact the Central Authority for your province or territory of residence for information on starting an application under The Hague Convention
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Austria to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children's Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies. Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Driving

You can drive for up to 12 months with your valid Canadian driver's licence, accompanied by an international driving permit or an official German translation of your licence. You must be 18 years old to drive in Austria. Penalties for drinking and driving are severe. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.05 percent. If convicted, you can expect heavy fines, and local authorities can confiscate your driver's licence immediately. You cannot turn right on a red light. A blinking green light is equivalent to an amber light in Canada: it doesn't mean that you have the right-of-way to advance.

Mandatory equipment

Winter tires are mandatory from November 1 to April 15. All vehicles must have the following in case of a breakdown:

  • a first-aid kit
  • a warning triangle
  • high-visibility vests (to be carried in the passenger compartment, not the trunk) which must be worn by the driver and any passenger who leaves the vehicle
Vignette

You must purchase an autobahn vignette (similar to a toll) sticker to drive on highways. You must affix the sticker to the car's windshield. You can purchase a vignette at all major border crossings, gas stations and convenience stores across Austria. You can also purchase a digital vignette online from ASFiNAG, the state-owned highways corporation. If you do not purchase and display a vignette, you will be fined on the spot.

Drones

Austrian and EU laws regulate recreational and commercial drone operation. Certain areas are restricted or off-limits for personal drones. You must register as a drone operator with the Austrian authorities. Depending on the size of your drone and the intended use, you may also need to take a proof of competency exam. If you don't comply, you may be fined and your drone confiscated.

Money

The currency of Austria is the euro (EUR). Credit cards are widely accepted at main hotels, shops and restaurants. Smaller establishments may only accept cash. If you are carrying €10,000 or more, or the equivalent in other currencies or monetary instruments, you must make a declaration to customs when you enter or leave the European Union. This does not apply if you are travelling within the European Union or in transit to a non-EU country. EU Cash Controls – European Commission

  • have a ‘date of issue’ less than 10 years before the date you arrive – if you renewed your passport before 1 October 2018, it might have a date of issue that is more than 10 years ago, making it invalid for entry to the Schengen area
  • have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area (the expiry date does not need to be within 10 years of the date of issue)

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to .

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual Citizenship .

Visa requirements

You can travel without a visa to the Schengen area, which includes Austria, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This applies if you travel:

  • as a tourist
  • to visit family or friends
  • to attend business meetings, cultural or sports events
  • for short-term studies or training

The requirements for working in Austria are different.

If you are travelling to other Schengen countries as well, make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day limit. Visits to Schengen countries within the 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days. If you overstay the 90-day visa-free limit, you may be banned from entering Schengen countries for up to 3 years.

At Austrian border control, you may need to:

  • show proof of your accommodation, for example, a hotel booking confirmation or proof of address for a second home
  • show proof of your travel insurance
  • show a return or onward ticket
  • prove that you have enough money for your stay
Staying longer than 90 days in a 180-day period

To stay longer, you must meet the Austrian government’s entry requirements. Check which type of visa or work permit you need with the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Austrian Embassy in the UK .

If you’re in Austria with a residence permit or long-stay visa, this does not count towards your 90-day visa-free limit.

Read about entry processes if you live in Austria .

New Schengen entry requirements

The European Union’s (EU) new Entry/Exit System (EES) is now being implemented across the Schengen area.

This means that when you travel into the Schengen area for short stays, you may need to register your biometric details, such as fingerprints and a photo. There is no cost for EES registration.

On your first visit into a Schengen country, you may be asked to register your details at a special booth before proceeding to the immigration desk. Follow directions from your…

What is the official risk level in Austria today?

Level 1/4 — Exercise Normal Precautions, U.S. Department of State, retrieved on 16 October 2026.

  • Is the whole country advised against? United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no (reading of 27 September 2026).
  • Contractually, only an FDFA, FOPH or WHO advisory against the trip opens Module A (art. 18.1) — that is not the case today.
  • Travel with international medical cover and the 24/7 number (+41 22 ••• •• ••) saved: here the risk is not the advisory, it is the hospital bill.

Is the whole of Austria advised against, or only some areas?

An area advised against does not rule out the country.

  • Keep your country of residence's advisory on booking day and on departure day: that is what your policy's clauses cite.

What are the entry requirements for Austria with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): French nationals may enter Austria with a valid passport or national identity card, as all COVID-19 entry restrictions have been lifted. National identity cards issued to adults between January 1, 2004, and December 31, 2013, are valid for 15 years, even if expired on their face. It is recommended that French travellers use a valid passport instead of an expired national identity card to avoid travel issues.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British citizens' passports must have been issued less than 10 years ago and expire at least 3 months after departure from the Schengen area. British citizens can visit Austria visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period for tourism or short stays. When entering Austria, British citizens may need to show proof of accommodation, travel insurance, and sufficient funds for their stay.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a Austria visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (EUR 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.
  • Attach it to the visa file; if in doubt about the format, write to us.

Local laws apply to every traveller; here is what the official texts say.

  • Penalties for drug offences, including cannabis possession, are severe, leading to long jail sentences and heavy fines.
  • You must validate public transport tickets before travel to avoid on-the-spot fines of 100 to 500 euros.

What Maximum knows

The 207 country pages — hospitals, pharmacies, police, embassies, emergency numbers, official advice from four governments, health, safety in figures, events in progress — read around the city you name. Your policy — benefits, the six steps, claims, articles. The site — prices, certificate, subscription. Nothing else: what it does not know, it says so and hands you to an adviser.
