How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult your doctor or international vaccination centre at least eight weeks before departure to assess your health and receive vaccination recommendations. Foreign Office
  • Ensure you are up to date with French vaccination calendar, particularly against diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis, pertussis and measles; yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for travellers from endemic zones. France Diplomatie
  • Carry medications only in original packaging with original labels, accompanied by a prescription listing drugs by international non-proprietary name; verify authorisation in your destination country. France Diplomatie
  • Wear long clothing, apply insect repellent to exposed skin, use impregnated mosquito nets and eliminate standing water to prevent dengue and Japanese encephalitis transmitted by mosquitoes. France Diplomatie
  • Drink only bottled or boiled water, avoid raw or undercooked food, peel fruits and vegetables, and wash hands regularly with soap or alcohol-based solutions to prevent foodborne illness. France Diplomatie
  • UK residents can access essential and urgent hospital treatment free through the UK-Australia Reciprocal Healthcare Agreement; GP visits and prescriptions incur charges recoverable through Medicare. Foreign Office

  • Fièvre jaune : obligatoire pour les voyageurs en provenance de zones d’endémie ;
  • Chikungunya : en cas d’épidémie ou de séjour prolongé ;
  • Dengue : en cas d’épidémie active ou de séjour prolongé en zone endémique ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Health — Foreign Office

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Dial 000 and ask for an ambulance.

Contact your insurance or medical assistance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

  • check the latest vaccine recommendations for Australia
  • see where to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

See what health risks you’ll face in Australia including:

  • dengue
  • Japanese encephalitis and other insect or tick-borne diseases
Medication

The legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can be different in other countries.

Read best practice when travelling with medicines on TravelHealthPro .

Healthcare in Australia

While you are in Australia, you can access essential and urgent medical care through the UK-Australia Reciprocal Healthcare Agreement. Find out more about healthcare for UK citizens in Australia .

Essential and urgent hospital treatment is free. There is a charge to visit GPs and receive prescriptions. You can recover some costs through Medicare, Australia’s universal health insurance scheme. You can enrol with Medicare through Services Australia .

If you’re not covered by reciprocal healthcare arrangements between Australia and the UK, costs of treatment can be high.

The standard of healthcare in Australia is very good. UK residents are entitled to limited subsidised health services from Medicare for medically necessary treatment while visiting Australia. These provisions do not apply to non-visitors, for example those studying in Australia. Other exclusions under the reciprocal agreement include pharmaceuticals (unless you’re in hospital), use of ambulance services and medical evacuations, which are very expensive.

  • Placer ses documents officiels dans un endroit sécurisé, à défaut en conserver une copie sur support informatique et faire des photocopies à prendre avec soi ;
  • Toujours conserver le numéro de la carte de crédit ailleurs que dans son portefeuille (pour faire opposition, en cas de vol ou de perte, le numéro de la carte est demandé) ;
  • Ne laisser aucun document important ni objet de valeur (téléphone portable, appareil photographique, lecteur MP3, porte-monnaie) dans les véhicules (en particulier les vans, facilement repérables) ;
  • Ne rien emporter de précieux lorsque l’on se rend sur une plage, et surveiller ses effets personnels ;

You must abide by local laws. Learn about what you should do and how we can help if you are arrested or detained abroad. Canada and Australia are signatories to the Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons. This enables a Canadian imprisoned in Australia to request a transfer to a Canadian prison to complete a sentence. The transfer requires the agreement of both Canadian and Australian authorities. This process can take a long time and there is no guarantee that the transfer will be approved by either or both sides.

If you are in this situation:

  • act as quickly as you can

  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Australia to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children's Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

  • le transit de moins de 8 heures au sein de la zone internationale d’un aéroport australien ne nécessite pas de visa ni d’autorisation spécifique pour les ressortissants français ;
  • pour les transits dont la durée est de 8 à 72 heures, il convient de demander un visa de transit 771 et de se référer aux consignes des autorités australiennes de l’immigration qui sont régulièrement actualisées ;

2/ Working Holiday Visa / Visa vacances-travail (subclass 417)

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of the current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Australia set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Australian High Commission in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

To enter Australia, your passport must be valid for the length of your planned stay.

If you’re travelling through or transiting another country on your way to or from Australia, check the entry requirements for that country. Many countries require at least 6 months validity remaining on your passport, even if you’re just in transit and do not pass through immigration.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

British- Australian dual nationals

If you’re a British-Australian dual national, you must leave and enter Australia on your Australian passport. You could face difficulties and delays if you do not. See Australian government advice for dual nationals .

Visa requirements

You must have a visa to visit Australia.

Applying for a visa

British citizens can usually get the following types of electronic visitor visa:

- eVisitor visa – there is no visa application charge or service fee

- Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) through the iOS app or Android app – there is no visa application charge, but there may be a service fee

The Department of Home Affairs has information on all other types of visas .

Vaccine requirements

To enter Australia, you must have a certificate to prove you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination if you’re coming from a country listed as a transmission risk . See the Australian Department of Health’s information on yellow fever for travellers .

For full details about medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, see TravelHealthPro’s Australia guide .

Customs requirements

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Australia . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Quarantine rules

Australia has strict quarantine rules to keep out pests and diseases that could affect plant, animal or human health.

You must fill in an Incoming Passenger Card and either:

  • declare goods considered to be a risk, such as food, animal products and plant material (including wooden articles)
  • dispose of goods in bins at the airport or seaport

You must also declare if you have ‘been in contact with farms, farm animals, wilderness areas or freshwater streams/lakes etc in the past 30 days’.

The Australian authorities X-ray luggage. They inspect, treat and, if necessary, confiscate and destroy items of concern. You can get a heavy fine if you break quarantine.

The Department of Agriculture has more information on quarantine rules .

American passport — U.S. Department of State

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — No area exclusion at this level — compare cap, deductible and covered duration.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.
  • Have your IPID number or the PDF of the terms and ask an expert to call you back: the answer is in the document, not in the brochure.

How do I use the medical network on this page?

The page reads hospitals, pharmacies and doctors from OpenStreetMap, around the point you choose.

  • Type your city, hotel or beach: the map re-centres, 24/7 emergency rooms come first.
  • Each row gives the phone when the source publishes it, the nearest street, directions and the Google Maps listing.
  • The PDF briefing repeats the same places, numbered on a printable map.
  • No customer reviews: OpenStreetMap has none, and we invent none.

Can I be treated in Australia, or will I be evacuated?

4.1 physicians per 1,000 people (2022) versus 4.5 in Switzerland.

  • 3.8 hospital beds per 1,000 people versus 4.4 in Switzerland (World Bank).
  • Medical density comparable to Switzerland: the local network handles most cases; repatriation remains a question of convalescence and cost. Health spending of 6,980 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784): expensive care, settled directly by the insurer with the payment guarantee.
  • When the local facility is not enough, Maximum's medical team decides the evacuation to a suitable centre, and pays for it (art. 6.2.2).

Australia: safety, in figures?

0.8 homicides per 100,000 people (2023) versus 0.6 in Switzerland and 1.3 in France.

  • 4.9 road deaths per 100,000 people versus 2.2 in Switzerland (World Bank, WHO).
  • The homicide rate is in the same range as Switzerland or France. On the road, 2 times more deaths than in Switzerland: road crashes are the leading cause of death of healthy travellers (CDC) — seat belt, no night driving, a driver or a taxi from a rank.
