How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

Routine vaccinesCDC ↗

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include Chickenpox (Varicella) Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (DTaP, Tdap, or Td) Flu (influenza) Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) Polio Shingles

COVID-19CDC ↗

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines. Please see  Your COVID-19 Vaccination  for more information.

Hepatitis ACDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Trinidad and Tobago. Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series. Travelers allergic to a vaccine component should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.

  • Fièvre jaune : recommandée (à pratiquer avant le départ dans un centre agréé). Un certificat de vaccination contre la fièvre jaune est exigé uniquement des voyageurs en provenance d’un pays où sévit un risque de transmission de la fièvre jaune ;
  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales ;
  • Chikungunya : en cas d’épidémie ou de séjour prolongé ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

  • see where to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

The yellow fever vaccination is recommended for some travellers if visiting Trinidad – see TravelHealthPro’s vaccine recommendations .

See what other health risks you’ll face in Trinidad and Tobago .

The 2022 UNAIDS Country Factsheet estimated that around 12,000 adults aged 15 or over in Trinidad and Tobago were living with HIV. Take precautions to avoid exposure to HIV.

Trinidad and Tobago - Level 3: Reconsider TravelState Department ↗updated 12.04.2026 · read 13.10.2026

Updated 12.04.2026

Reconsider travel in Trinidad and Tobago due to crime , health , and terrorism . Some areas have an increased risk. Read the entire Travel Advisory.

State of Emergency

On March 2, 2026, the Government of Trinidad and Tobago (GOTT) declared a new nationwide State of Emergency (SOE). This is due to a spike in violent criminal activity that could threaten public safety.

During the SOE, the GOTT has imposed the following measures:

  • The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service can:
  • Arrest people on suspicion of involvement in illegal activities.
  • Search and enter public and private properties as needed.
  • Bail is suspended for those suspected of committing a crime.
  • Members of the Defense Force are following similar regulations as the local police.
  • There are currently no curfews or restrictions on public gatherings.
  • The GOTT will monitor the SOE daily. Restrictions may change with little or no notice.

Although violent crime in Trinidad and Tobago has dropped greatly since 2024 due to security efforts started during the previous state of emergencies, crime remains a challenge throughout the country. Crime rates are lower in Tobago than in Trinidad.

Due to crime risks, U.S. government employees working in Trinidad and Tobago are not allowed to travel to the following areas in Port of Spain:

  • At any time:
  • Laventille
  • The southern end of Charlotte Street between Oxford Street and Park Street (past the General Hospital)
  • Piccadilly Street
  • Besson Street
  • Beetham, Sea Lots, Cocorite, and the interior of Queens’ Park Savannah
  • At night:
  • Port of Spain Beaches
  • Downtown Port of Spain
  • Fort George
  • Queen’s Park Savannah

There is risk of terrorist violence, including terrorist attacks and other activity in Trinidad and Tobago. Visit the U.S. Department of State’s Country Reports on Terrorism to learn more.

Risks in specific areas

Exercise increased caution due to limited health care in rural areas on both Trinidad and Tobago. Medical services for routine and emergency procedures in those areas are limited.

  • Read the Health section of the Travel Guidance on this page for more information.

  • Il est déconseillé de se rendre de nuit dans le quartier (« Downtown ») situé autour d’Independance Avenue et de Charlotte street ;
  • Il est déconseillé de se rendre de jour comme de nuit au belvédère de Fort Georges, ainsi que dans l’intérieur de Savannah Park ;

  • avant de se rendre à Tobago, de noter les coordonnées du service de police compétent sur le secteur prévu pour le séjour (voir l’encadré Contacts utiles de la présente fiche) ;
  • de séjourner de préférence dans des résidences ou des hôtels placés sous la surveillance de gardes ;
  • de ne pas se rendre seul sur les plages isolées ;
  • dès la nuit tombée, de ne se déplacer qu’en taxi ;

  • en cas d’agression, ne pas résister et attendre le départ définitif des agresseurs avant d’appeler à l’aide ;
  • ne porter sur soi qu’une faible somme d’argent ;
  • il est vivement recommandé de ne pas retirer d’argent dans les distributeurs bancaires (ATM) la nuit ;

- keep money, valuables and passports somewhere safe

- park in well-lit areas

- never leave anything in an unattended vehicle

- do not leave bags, purses, handbags, laptops and phones exposed on the seat of a moving vehicle - there have been incidents of items being snatched through car windows

- be careful when withdrawing cash from ATMs or changing money - use well-lit ATMs, withdraw small amounts only and preferably during daylight hours

- keep an eye on your card when making purchases to avoid card skimming

- if you’re staying in a villa, especially in an isolated area, make sure it has adequate security, including external security lighting, grills and overnight security guards

- be cautious about what you post online - social media platforms are increasingly being monitored by criminals

- if you’re attacked or robbed, don’t resist - criminals are often armed, and you can be seriously injured or killed

- if you’re the victim of a violent crime, especially rape, get urgent medical help

Drug assisted robbery and sexual assault

You should:

- avoid accepting invitations from strangers or inviting them to your accommodation

- plan travel routes in advance, particularly at night

If drugged, seek local medical attention as soon as possible.

Advisory summary

Local laws

Drugs

Penalties for possession, use or trafficking of illegal drugs are severe. Convicted offenders can expect jail sentences and heavy fines. Drugs, alcohol and travel

2SLGBTQI+ persons

2SLGBTQI+ persons have been harassed and verbally and/or physically abused. Be cautious and avoid public displays of affection with someone of the same sex. The law in Trinidad and Tobago prohibits sexual acts between men. Those convicted can face sentences of up to 5 years in prison. It’s illegal for 2SLGBTQI+ foreign nationals to enter the country, but this law is rarely enforced. Travel and your sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. The convention applies between Canada and Trinidad and Tobago. If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Trinidad and Tobago, and if the applicable conditions are met, you may apply for the return of your child to the Trinidadian and Tobagonian court. If you are in this situation:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • contact the Central Authority for your province or territory of residence for information on starting an application under The Hague Convention
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Trinidad and Tobago to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children's Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies. Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Driving

Traffic drives on the left. Most vehicles are right-hand drive, but left-hand-drive vehicles are permitted and identified as such. All children below the age of 5 must be buckled into a car seat or a booster seat in the back seat of a vehicle. Visitors aged 17 or older are allowed to drive for 90 days with a valid Canadian driver’s licence. If you plan to stay beyond 90 days, you should apply for an International Driving Permit prior to arrival in Trinidad and Tobago. International Driving Permit

Drinking and driving

Persons found guilty of drinking and driving face heavy fines and/or jail sentences. Police use roadblocks to check for drunk drivers and breathalysers to test drivers on the spot.

Death penalty

Trinidad and Tobago retains the mandatory death penalty for persons convicted of murder, although the law is not always enforced.

Camouflage clothing

It is illegal for civilians to wear army or camouflage clothing.

Money

The currency of Trinidad and Tobago is the Trinidad and Tobago dollar (TTD). You can convert Canadian currency at all major banks or currency exchange bureaux in Trinidad and Tobago.

Foreign Office — laws and cultural differences

Laws on clothing

It is an offence for anyone, including children, to dress in camouflage clothing or bring any into the country.

Illegal drugs penalties

Trinidad and Tobago has decriminalised the possession of up to 30g of cannabis or up to 5g of cannabis resin. However, you’re not allowed to smoke cannabis in public spaces or while operating a vehicle. If you are stopped with these amounts, you can be fined up to 50,000 Trinidad and Tobago dollars. For larger quantities there are more hefty fines and possible imprisonment. There are also severe penalties for other drug-related offences.

LGBT+ travellers

In March 2025, consensual same-sex activity was reinstated as a crime punishable by up to 5 years imprisonment. It is also illegal for LGBT+ foreign nationals to enter the country. However, neither of these laws has been enforced in recent times. It is possible LGBT+ visitors could receive negative attention if they show affection in public. Take care when using dating apps especially those used by the LGBT+ community. Criminals have used apps like Grindr to trick, rob and assault people. Read more advice for LGBT+ travellers.

Trespassing

If you enter private property without permission, you may face a fine of up to 750,000 Trinidad and Tobago Dollars or imprisonment for up to 25 years. Local laws allow legal occupants of private property to use defensive and even deadly force against trespassers.

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Trinidad and Tobago’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Trinidad and Tobago set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Trinidad and Tobago High Commission in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

To enter Trinidad and Tobago your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

You can visit Trinidad and Tobago without a visa for up to 90 days.

You must have:

  • an onward or return ticket
  • proof of funds for your stay

For business or study, see visa requirements on the Trinidad and Tobago immigration division website or contact the Trinidad and Tobago High Commission in the UK .

You can get your 90-day visit extended by applying to the passport and immigration department .

Make sure you get your passport stamped.

If you do not have an entry stamp in your passport, it will be difficult to extend your stay.

If you are a returning resident, you may be asked to show your residence permit or work permit when you arrive in Trinidad and Tobago.

Entry by sea

You can sail into and out of the marinas or Chaguaramas Bay. You must follow government regulations or you could be stopped by the coast guard, who will hand you over to the police.

Vaccine requirements

For details about health entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, see TravelHealthPro’s Trinidad and Tobago guide .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Trinidad and Tobago . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Taking money into Trinidad and Tobago

The amount of currency you can bring in (or take out of) the country is unlimited. However you must declare cash in any currency worth over 20,000 Trinidad and Tobago dollars. There are strict penalties for failing to declare amounts in excess of the limit.

Is the whole of Trinidad and Tobago advised against, or only some areas?

What are the entry requirements for Trinidad and Tobago with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): French nationals may stay in Trinidad and Tobago for three months without a visa, provided they hold a passport valid for at least six months. French visitors must present a return ticket, hotel reservation, and confirm they will not undertake paid work without a work permit. Yellow fever vaccination is required for travellers arriving from Suriname, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, and Panama.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British citizens need a passport valid for at least six months beyond arrival to enter Trinidad and Tobago. Visitors can stay up to 90 days without a visa if they have an onward or return ticket and proof of funds. Ensure your passport receives an entry stamp upon arrival, as this is required to extend your stay beyond 90 days.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a Trinidad and Tobago visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (CHF 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.
  • Attach it to the visa file; if in doubt about the format, write to us.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Trinidad and Tobago?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — No area exclusion at this level — compare cap, deductible and covered duration.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.
  • Have your IPID number or the PDF of the terms and ask an expert to call you back: the answer is in the document, not in the brochure.

How do I use the medical network on this page?

The page reads hospitals, pharmacies and doctors from OpenStreetMap, around the point you choose.

  • Type your city, hotel or beach: the map re-centres, 24/7 emergency rooms come first.
  • Each row gives the phone when the source publishes it, the nearest street, directions and the Google Maps listing.
  • The PDF briefing repeats the same places, numbered on a printable map.
  • No customer reviews: OpenStreetMap has none, and we invent none.

Can I be treated in Trinidad and Tobago, or will I be evacuated?

4.2 physicians per 1,000 people (2021) versus 4.5 in Switzerland.

  • 2.4 hospital beds per 1,000 people versus 4.4 in Switzerland (World Bank).
  • Medical density comparable to Switzerland: the local network handles most cases; repatriation remains a question of convalescence and cost. Health spending of 1,276 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.
  • When the local facility is not enough, Maximum's medical team decides the evacuation to a suitable centre, and pays for it (art. 6.2.2).

Trinidad and Tobago: safety, in figures?

40.4 homicides per 100,000 people (2022) versus 0.6 in Switzerland and 1.3 in France.

  • 9.3 road deaths per 100,000 people versus 2.2 in Switzerland (World Bank, WHO).
  • The homicide rate is 67 times Switzerland's: violence is a real risk there, concentrated in the areas named by the official advisories. On the road, 4 times more deaths than in Switzerland: road crashes are the leading cause of death of healthy travellers (CDC) — seat belt, no night driving, a driver or a taxi from a rank.
