How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

Recommended vaccines and medicines9

Routine vaccinesCDC ↗

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include Chickenpox (Varicella) Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (DTaP, Tdap, or Td) Flu (influenza) Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) Polio Shingles

COVID-19CDC ↗

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines. Please see  Your COVID-19 Vaccination  for more information.

Hepatitis ACDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Jordan. Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series. Travelers allergic to a vaccine component should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.

Hepatitis BCDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers younger than 60 years old traveling to Jordan. Unvaccinated travelers 60 years and older may get vaccinated before traveling to Jordan.

MeaslesCDC ↗

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

MonkeypoxCDC ↗

Monkeypox vaccination is recommended for any adult who anticipates any of the following activities during travel: Sexual or intimate contact with a new partner Sexual or intimate contact at a commercial sex venue, like a sex club or bathhouse Sexual or intimate contact in exchange for money, goods, drugs, or other trade Sexual or intimate contact in association with a large public event, such as a rave, party, or…

RabiesCDC ↗

Dogs infected with rabies are commonly found in Jordan. Rabies is also present in some terrestrial wildlife species. If rabies exposures occur while in Jordan, rabies vaccines are typically available throughout most of the country.

TyphoidCDC ↗

Recommended for most travelers. Typhoid vaccine is not 100% effective. Practicing safe food and water habits , including washing hands at key times , can also help prevent typhoid fever .

Yellow FeverCDC ↗

CDC recommendations: Vaccine is not recommended. Country entry requirements: Direct travel from United States: Vaccine is not required. Travel from countries with risk for YF virus transmission: Vaccine is required for travelers ≥1 year old; this includes >12-hour airport transits or layovers in countries with risk for YF virus transmission. 3 Updated April 23, 2025 See footnotes

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult a doctor or international vaccination centre at least 8 weeks before travel for health assessments and recommended vaccinations, including diphtheria, tetanus, polio, and measles.
  • Carry necessary personal medications in their original packaging with an international common name prescription, and verify their legality in Jordan to avoid issues with illicit substances.
  • Practice good hygiene by washing hands regularly, avoiding contact with animals like camels, and steering clear of raw or undercooked food and unsealed beverages.
  • Be aware that medical facilities outside Amman and Aqaba are basic, and hospitals may require financial guarantees before commencing treatment.
  • In case of an emergency, call 911 for an ambulance and contact your insurance company promptly if medical treatment is required.
  • Be aware of MERS-CoV risks and follow hygiene measures, including hand washing and avoiding close contact with sick individuals or animals.

  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Tuberculose : chez les enfants de moins de 15 ans en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;

  • Se laver régulièrement les mains à l’eau et au savon ou avec une solution hydro-alcoolique ;
  • Éviter le contact avec les animaux en particulier avec les chameaux et les dromadaires ainsi que la consommation de viande de chameau ou lait de chamelle ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

  • Éviter de laisser de manière apparente sacs et objets de valeur dans les véhicules inoccupés ;
  • S’assurer de la qualité des serrures des logements ;

Swiss passport — FDFA (Switzerland), in French

In brief
  • The security situation in Jordan remains extremely tense due to regional events, with potential restrictions on tourist traffic and disruptions from demonstrations.
  • Terrorist acts are a risk throughout the country; individuals should monitor media and tour operators for updates and avoid crowds, especially after Friday prayers.
  • Travel to the border areas with Iraq and Syria is strongly discouraged due to instability and potential military zones, with minefields present in the Jordan Valley.
  • Petty crime like pickpocketing and vehicle theft is common; women traveling alone should be particularly vigilant and take precautions with valuables and identification.
  • Road accidents are frequent due to dangerous driving and poor lighting, and desert travel requires convoys, navigation tools, and sufficient supplies.
  • Rapid weather changes can cause flash floods and landslides, while earthquakes are a risk; contact loved ones and Swiss authorities in case of natural disasters.

Faithful summary of the official texts below, which prevail.

Jordan-Syria border

FCDO advises against all travel to within 3km of the border with Syria.

Regional tensions

The US and Iran announced a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on 17 June in relation to the conflict in the Middle East, however the situation in the Middle East remains unpredictable. Since 8 July there have been strikes and retaliatory attacks by Iran in a number of locations across the region, including Jordan, against US military and civilian infrastructure. In early September renewed attacks and interceptions occurred in and around Aqaba. There is a risk of more attacks and unforeseen escalation in the region. Before the ceasefire, the Iranian regime had stated its intention to target locations associated with the US and Israel, including organisations, businesses, facilities, and institutions.

British nationals currently in the Middle East should be prepared for possible flight cancellations, periodic airspace closures, and potential travel disruptions, and should:

  • read If you’re affected by a crisis abroad - GOV.UK . This includes guidance on “how to prepare for a crisis” with suggestions on what you might include in your emergency supplies and “what to do in a crisis”
  • sign up to FCDO Travel Advice email alerts
  • follow advice from the local authorities
  • monitor local and international media for the latest information, including updates relating to airports and airspace which could close at short notice
  • stay away from areas around security or military facilities and strategic infrastructure. Recent attacks show that these areas may be targets or experience falling debris
  • keep your departure plans under review, and ensure your travel documents are up to date
  • if advised to take shelter, stay indoors or find the nearest safe building or designated shelter. An interior stairwell or a room with as few external walls or windows as possible may provide additional protection. The greatest risk is from falling debris caused by intercepts, and you are safest inside a secure structure. Do not approach or touch any drone or missile fragments or unusual objects

Regional risks — Foreign Office

This section has safety advice for regions of Jordan. It only covers regions where the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office ( FCDO ) has specific advice.

You should also read FCDO ’s overall travel advice and safety and security advice .

Regional hostilities

Following regional hostilities with Iran and in Israel, Lebanon, the West Bank and Gaza, the security situation could change suddenly.

If you hear sirens, remain indoors and stay away from windows to ensure protection from any possible missile/drone fragments. If there are any injuries or damages, call 911 immediately.

Land border crossings

The roads within Jordan and land border crossings between Jordan and Israel and the West Bank can close at no notice.

See Israel travel advice and Palestine travel advice and check with the Jordanian authorities before crossing.

Border areas

Take care near borders and if you’re crossing into a neighbouring country. Jordanian army and police units patrol the borders with Syria and Iraq and check traffic.

There may be landmines near borders and military installations. Minefields are usually fenced off and marked, but fences and signs may be in a poor state of repair.

Jordan-Syria border

FCDO advises against all travel to within 3km of the border with Syria. The situation in southern Syria is fragile and instability or terrorist activity could start with little or no notice. There are also reports of violent confrontations between smugglers and the Jordan Armed Forces.

The Jaber land border crossing from Jordan into Syria has reopened. Jordanian nationals may use the crossing to return to Jordan from Syria, and Syrian citizens holding a valid Syrian passport or travel document from the Syrian Embassy in Amman may use the crossing to return to Syria. There may be a heavier than usual military presence along the border.

Jordan-Iraq border

FCDO advises against all travel to the provinces in Iraq bordering Jordan. See Iraq travel advice .

Jordan-Israel border

Due to the conflict in Israel and Palestine, there have been instances of protests near the border on Fridays. Be particularly cautious in areas close to the border.

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Jordan

In the context of regional escalation, Iran-aligned militia groups have threatened to target US interests across the region, have claimed attacks in Jordan and are likely to continue to carry out these attacks in Jordan.

As was the case before the recent regional escalation, terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Jordan, including in places visited by foreign nationals, such as:

  • hotels
  • shopping malls
  • restaurants
  • tourist sites
  • border crossings

Stay aware of your surroundings, keep up to date with local media reports and follow the advice of local authorities.

Examples of significant attacks include:

- in 2025, 2 people and the assailant were killed in a knife attack at the King Hussein/Allenby bridge

- in 2024, there were 3 separate attacks on the border crossings, where 3 Israeli border personnel were killed

Political situation

The political situation in Jordan is stable but sometimes there are protests in Amman and other cities. You should stay away from demonstrations and follow the advice of the local authorities.

Demonstrations and mass gatherings

On 23 June 2026, large crowds gathered to watch Jordan’s national team play in the 2026 World Cup. One person died and eight were injured in downtown Amman at a public screening of the match.

You should:

- stay aware of your surroundings and consider avoiding crowds, crowd control measures may be limited

- follow the advice of local authorities

- monitor local media

Protecting yourself and your belongings

Crime levels are generally low, but there is a risk of pickpocketing, bag-snatching and theft from cars. Stay alert and keep your money, passport and valuables secure.

Street begging can be aggressive, particularly in areas frequented by foreigners. Do not engage with beggars.

Methanol poisoning

There has been an increase in cases of serious illness caused by alcoholic drinks containing methanol in popular travel destinations around the world.

Even small amounts of methanol can kill. It is not possible to identify methanol in alcoholic drinks by taste or smell. See Travel Aware Drink Spiking and Methanol Poisoning for information about how to reduce the risks.

Seek urgent medical attention if you or someone you are travelling with show the signs of methanol poisoning after drinking.

Sexual assault

Take care when walking or travelling alone. Maintain at least the same level of personal security awareness as you would in the UK. See advice for women travelling abroad .

You should not accept lifts from strangers. If you must use a taxi , you should:

  • ask your hotel to recommend a reliable driver
  • not ride in the front seat, particularly when travelling alone
  • use Uber or Careem which are safer than yellow taxis
Laws and cultural differences

Jordan is a predominantly Islamic country. Always respect local traditions, customs, laws and religions so you do not cause offence.

Faithful summary of the official texts below, which prevail.

Global Affairs Canada — written for Canadian travellers, valid for all

Local laws

You must abide by local laws. Learn about what you should do and how we can help if you are arrested or detained abroad.

Legal process

Jordan’s legal process is different from Canada’s. You are subject to all local laws, penalties and timelines. Police may hold suspects and witnesses to incidents for lengthy periods without access to legal counsel or consular officials.

Administration

Jordan offers government services in Arabic only. Before submitting official documents to local authorities, you must have them translated into Arabic. The work week is from Sunday to Thursday.

Children

Before travelling to Jordan, and in case of a family dispute involving children, both parents should ensure they’re fully aware of the implications of local laws on children’s mobility, access and custody. Any adult male may prevent related minor children from leaving Jordan by placing a travel hold with Jordanian authorities. Immigration officials may prevent children travelling with their mothers from departing Jordan without their father’s consent. This is possible even if the child or mother is solely a Canadian citizen. Jordanian authorities consider disputes surrounding travel holds as private family matters. The Embassy of Canada is limited in its ability to intervene. Only a court or the person who requested the travel hold may remove it.

Spouses

Under Jordanian law, a husband may place a travel hold on his wife, preventing her departure from Jordan.

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. It does not apply between Canada and Jordan. If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Jordan by an abducting parent:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Jordan to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies. Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Drugs

Penalties for possession, use or trafficking of illegal drugs are severe. Even possession or use of small amounts of illegal drugs is a criminal offence. If you’re accused of a drug offence, you could be detained for up to 2 weeks without being charged. Convicted offenders can expect heavy jail sentences and fines.

Alcohol

Consumption of alcohol outside approved venues is illegal. It could result in your arrest, heavy fines or imprisonment. Public intoxication is a criminal offence, whether or not consumption occurred privately. Drugs, alcohol and travel

Identification

Local authorities may request to see your identification at any time. Always carry valid identification or a photocopy of it.

Drones

The importation, possession, and use of drones, including for aerial photography and videography, are strictly regulated in Jordan. You must obtain authorization before importing or operating a drone. Failure to comply with drone regulations may result in severe penalties, including imprisonment, fines, and confiscation of the equipment.

Illegal activities

Other illegal activities include:

  • insulting King Abdullah II or other members of Jordan’s royal family
  • photographing government buildings and military installations
  • all forms of religious proselytizing, including distribution of religious materials
  • adultery and extramarital sexual relations
  • prostitution
  • possession of pornographic material
Driving

By law, all vehicles must carry a fire extinguisher and warning triangle.

Accidents

If a pedestrian is injured in an accident, authorities always deem the driver to be guilty. As the driver, you may face imprisonment and heavy fines. Many drivers involved in an accident may avoid calling the police and try to negotiate a settlement instead. However, they may later try to file a claim against you. In the event of an accident causing personal injury, the driver may be held for several days until responsibility and appropriate restitution is determined. To avoid legal issues, call the police to attend the scene of the accident and assess responsibility.

Drinking and driving

Jordan has a zero-tolerance policy for drinking and driving. If a police officer suspects you of drinking and driving, they could confiscate your driver’s licence on the spot. If you’re convicted, you can expect heavy fines and possible imprisonment.

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Jordan’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Jordan set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Jordanian Embassy in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

To enter Jordan, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

British-Jordanian dual nationals

If you are a British-Jordanian dual national, you can use your British passport to enter Jordan, but you must show your Jordanian passport when you leave.

Children with a Jordanian passport

Children with a Jordanian passport, who are travelling without their father, cannot depart Jordan without a letter of permission signed by their father. They must have a letter even if they enter Jordan on a British passport.

Previous travel to Israel

If your passport has an Israeli stamp, you will not usually experience difficulties entering Jordan. If you have concerns, contact the Jordanian Embassy in the UK .

Visa requirements

You must have a visa to visit Jordan.

If you wish to also visit Israel or Palestine and re-enter Jordan, you can get a multiple-entry visa from the Jordanian Embassy in the UK .

Applying for a visit visa

You can buy a single-entry visit visa when you arrive at a Jordanian airport or the Sheikh Hussein/North Border land crossing. It costs 40 Jordanian dinars (JOD) and is valid for 3 months. Some airlines may ask you to submit a health declaration at check-in. Check with your airline.

If you’re visiting for tourism, and you will stay at least 3 nights in Jordan, you can apply for a Jordan Pass online before you arrive. A Jordan Pass costs between 70 and 80 Jordanian dinars, which includes the visa fee and gives discounted entry to major tourist sites. You should only purchase a Jordan Pass from the official website. The Jordan Pass is valid for 3 months from date of entry.

You can extend your Jordan visit visa online for up to 6 months. You could get a fine if you overstay.

Visiting Jordan for purposes other than tourism

If you are visiting Jordan for purposes other than tourism, you must apply for your visa in advance online . This includes travel for the purposes of work or study.

Registering with the local authorities

If you are planning to remain in Jordan for more than 14 days, you must report to the police station with a residency extension office that is nearest to your place of residence. You will be required to provide your biometrics (fingerprint and iris scan).

FDFA (Switzerland) — transport and specific advice, in French

Transport and infrastructure

The health system — With 2.9 physicians per 1,000 people (36% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover. Health spending of 342 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.

What are the entry requirements for Jordan with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): Visitors can obtain a visa online from the Jordanian Ministry of Interior or upon arrival at Queen Alia International Airport and border crossings; Jordanian embassies abroad no longer issue visas. A passport must have at least six months of validity remaining upon arrival in Jordan, and the single-entry visa fee is 40 JOD. The Jordan Pass offers free entry visas and access to 43 tourist sites for those staying at least three nights, with no reduced or child rates available.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British citizens must ensure their passport is valid for at least six months beyond their arrival date in Jordan. A single-entry visa to Jordan costs 40 Jordanian dinars and can be purchased upon arrival at specific entry points. The Jordan Pass, costing between 70 and 80 Jordanian dinars, includes the visa fee and entry to tourist sites if staying at least three nights.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.

  • 1.4 hospital beds per 1,000 people versus 4.4 in Switzerland (World Bank).

What Maximum knows

The 207 country pages — hospitals, pharmacies, police, embassies, emergency numbers, official advice from four governments, health, safety in figures, events in progress — read around the city you name. Your policy — benefits, the six steps, claims, articles. The site — prices, certificate, subscription. Nothing else: what it does not know, it says so and hands you to an adviser.
