How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

Recommended vaccines and medicines11

Routine vaccinesCDC ↗

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include Chickenpox (Varicella) Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (DTaP, Tdap, or Td) Flu (influenza) Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) Polio Shingles

COVID-19CDC ↗

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines. Please see  Your COVID-19 Vaccination  for more information.

Hepatitis ACDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Mauritania. Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series. Travelers allergic to a vaccine component should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.

Hepatitis BCDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers of all ages traveling to Mauritania.

MalariaCDC ↗

CDC recommends that travelers going to certain areas of Mauritania take prescription medicine to prevent malaria. Depending on the medicine you take, you will need to start taking this medicine multiple days before your trip, as well as during and after your trip. Talk to your doctor about which malaria medication you should take.

MeaslesCDC ↗

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

Meningococcal diseaseCDC ↗

Recommended for travelers 2 months old or older traveling to  areas of Mauritania  that are part of the meningitis belt during the dry season (roughly December to June).

MonkeypoxCDC ↗

Monkeypox vaccination is recommended for any adult who anticipates any of the following activities during travel: Sexual or intimate contact with a new partner Sexual or intimate contact at a commercial sex venue, like a sex club or bathhouse Sexual or intimate contact in exchange for money, goods, drugs, or other trade Sexual or intimate contact in association with a large public event, such as a rave, party, or…

RabiesCDC ↗

Dogs infected with rabies are commonly found in Mauritania. If rabies exposures occur while in Mauritania, rabies vaccines may only be available in larger suburban/urban medical facilities.

TyphoidCDC ↗

Recommended for most travelers. Typhoid vaccine is not 100% effective. Practicing safe food and water habits , including washing hands at key times , can also help prevent typhoid fever .

Yellow FeverCDC ↗

CDC recommendations: Vaccine is recommended for all travelers ≥9 months old going to areas south of the Sahara Desert. Vaccine is not recommended for travel limited to areas in the Sahara Desert. Country entry requirements: Direct travel from United States: Vaccine is not required. Travel from countries with risk for YF virus transmission: Vaccine is required for travelers ≥1 year old.

CDC Travelers' Health, re-read weekly — the recommendation depends on your age, vaccines and itinerary: confirm it with a doctor or a travel clinic 4 to 6 weeks before departure.CDC ↗read 10.10.2026

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult your doctor or international vaccination centre at least eight weeks before departure to assess your health and receive vaccination recommendations. France Diplomatie
  • Ensure you are up to date with French vaccination calendar, particularly against diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis, pertussis and measles; carry your vaccination record as some countries may request it. France Diplomatie
  • Carry prescription medications in original packaging with original labels and an international non-proprietary name prescription; verify these medicines are authorised in Mauritania before departure. France Diplomatie
  • Medical facilities are extremely limited outside Nouakchott and Nouadhibou; hospitals require financial guarantee before treatment and may charge in euros or US dollars, so obtain adequate travel health insurance. Foreign Office
  • Protect against mosquito-borne diseases by wearing long clothing, applying insect repellent to exposed skin, using impregnated mosquito nets, and eliminating standing water around accommodation. France Diplomatie
  • Drink only bottled or boiled water, peel fruits and vegetables, avoid raw or undercooked seafood and meat, and wash hands regularly with soap or alcohol-based solutions to prevent cholera and typhoid. France Diplomatie

  • Fièvre jaune : l a vaccination contre la fièvre jaune est obligatoire pour les voyageurs en provenance de zones d’endémies et fortement recommandée pour tous les autres voyageurs. La présentation du carnet de vaccinations internationales peut être exigé dans tous les cas ;
  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Méningite ACWY : en cas de séjour pendant la saison sèche (habituellement hiver et printemps) ou d’épidémie signalée ;
  • Tuberculose : chez les enfants de moins de 15 ans en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales ;
  • Chikungunya : en cas d’épidémie ou de séjour prolongé ;
  • Dengue : en cas d’épidémie active ou de séjour prolongé en zone endémique ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Health — Foreign Office

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Call 101 and ask for an ambulance.

The Mauritania authorities may not answer calls to this number.

Contact your insurance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

  • check the latest vaccine recommendations for Mauritania
  • see where to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

See what health risks you’ll face in Mauritania , including:

  • dengue
  • yellow fever
  • biting insects
  • Rift Valley fever
Medication

Many medicines may be fake or hard to find in Mauritania. Carry enough of your prescription medication for your stay. The legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can be different in other countries.

Read best practice when travelling with medicines on TravelHealthPro .

Healthcare in Mauritania

Medical facilities are extremely limited in Mauritania, particularly outside Nouakchott and Nouadhibou, where lack of communications makes dealing with an emergency very difficult.

Clinics in Nouakchott and Nouadhibou charge for medical care (sometimes in euros or US dollars) and may not accept foreign insurance cards. Make sure you have adequate travel health insurance and accessible funds to cover the cost of any medical treatment abroad and repatriation.

FCDO has a list of medical providers in Mauritania where some staff will speak English.

Reconsider travel to Mauritania due to terrorism, crime, and limited health infrastructure . Some areas have increased risk. Read the entire Travel Advisory.

U.S. government employee travel restrictions

  • The U.S. government has limited ability to offer emergency services to American citizens in Mauritania due to safety risks.
  • U.S. government employees working in Mauritania are not allowed to travel outside Nouakchott at night. They cannot walk alone outside of specific areas and times.
  • U.S. government employees working in Mauritania need special authorization to travel outside Nouakchott.

Stay aware of your surroundings in:

  • Urban areas and crowded markets.
  • Roadblocks, including by armed groups. They are present throughout the country.

Terrorism

There is risk of terrorist violence, including terrorist attacks and other activity in Mauritania. Visit the U.S. Department of State's country reports on terrorism to learn more.

  • au nord de la ville de Zouérate ;
  • à l’est d’une ligne Ghallaouia – Akhrejit ;
  • au nord-est d’une ligne Zouérate – Ghallaouia ;
  • au sud-est d’une ligne Akhrejit – Kankossa ;

  • au nord d’une ligne Choum – Aghouedir ;
  • à l’est d’une ligne Aghouedir – Tichit ;

  • ne portez pas sur vous des objets de valeur (montre, bijoux, etc.) ou de grosses sommes d'argent;

World Meteorological Organization

Regional risks — Foreign Office

This section has safety advice for regions of Mauritania. It only covers regions where FCDO has specific advice.

You should also read FCDO’s overall travel advice and safety and security advice .

Eastern Mauritania

FCDO advises against all travel to areas east of a line drawn between but excluding the towns of Kankossa, Akhreijit, Ghallaouia, Zouerat, Fderîck and onwards west to the border with Western Sahara.

FCDO advises against all travel because of designated “military zones” by the Mauritanian military. These areas are off-limits to foreign nationals and most civilians. The Mauritanian Ministry of Defence warned that individuals entering these areas would be treated as a military target. The boundaries of such zones frequently change and authorisation from authorities is needed for access.

These zones are due to the deterioration of the security situation in Mali leading to increased risks of incursions by terrorist groups based in Mali into Mauritanian territory, including Jama’a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin (JNIM). Serious organised crime groups operate in eastern Mauritania.

Mauritania-Mali border

FCDO advises against all travel to areas within 25km of the Malian border in the south of Mauritania, including Khabou. There is increased terrorist and serious organised crime activity across the border in Kayes Region in Mali.

Mauritania-Western Sahara border

FCDO advises against all but essential travel to areas within 25km of the Western Sahara border, excluding the section of the Nouakchott-Nouadhibou road and the city of Nouadhibou.

Unexploded landmines remain on the border with Western Sahara. Landmines can shift location due to weather conditions. You should check local advice before travelling.

Tiris Zemmour, Adrar, Tagant, Hodh el Gharbi, Assaba and Guidimaka provinces

FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the rest of the province of Tiris Zemmour, Assaba, Hodh el Gharbi, Gorgol and Guidimaka, and areas of Adrar and Tagant provinces, west of a line drawn between the towns of Ghallaouia, Akhreijit and Kankossa. This excludes:

- the areas west of a line running between Choum, Ouadane and where the 10th Meridian West meets latitude 18° 40°

- the town of Ouadane

- the Tidjikja-Tichit road

- the Aleg to Tidjikja road via Moudjeria and all areas of Tagant west of that road

- the Bogue to Kaedi road via Bababe

This is due to risks of instability extending from eastern Mauritania as a result of the conflict in Mali, including from organised crime.

FDFA (Switzerland) — laws and customs, in French

Specific legal provisions

Reading: With 0.3 physicians per 1,000 people (93% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover.

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, who choose to travel despite FCDO advice. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Mauritania’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Mauritania set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Mauritanian Embassy in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

To enter Mauritania, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

From 5 January 2025, it is no longer possible to obtain a visa on arrival in Mauritania. Before you travel, you must apply for an e-visa online via the website of the Mauritanian National Agency for the Population Register and Secure Titles (Agence Nationale du Registre des Populations et des Titres Sécurisés), who can be contacted via email ( contact@anrpts.gov.mr ) if you face any technical difficulties with your application.

E-visa fees must be paid on arrival in Mauritania in exact cash in Euros or US dollars. Change and receipts are not given. You should also print a copy of the e-visa and be ready to provide a copy on arrival in country. For information on visa lengths and fees, read guidance on the Mauritanian government’s website (in French).

You should apply for an e-visa well in advance of your anticipated travel date to ensure that it is issued on time by the Mauritanian authorities.

The Mauritanian Embassy in London does not issue visas.

Vaccine requirements

To enter Mauritania, you must have a certificate to prove you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination if you’re coming from a country listed as a transmission risk .

For more details about health entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, including yellow fever, see TravelHealthPro’s Mauritania guide .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Mauritania. You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Transport and infrastructure

What are the entry requirements for Mauritania with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): French nationals must enter Mauritania through 21 designated international border posts only; the Gogui post is formally discouraged due to red zone status. Obtain electronic visa authorization at anrpts.gov.mr before travel, then pay €55 at arrival for a 30-day single-entry visa with biometric data capture. Alcohol, cannabis, pork products and unlicensed substances are prohibited; possession triggers detention, court appearance and prison sentences.

What should I do if hospitalised in Mauritania?

Six steps, in this order.

  • 1. Call +41 22 ••• •• •• before paying anything, or have the front desk call: it is the condition for full cover (otherwise: reduced or refused benefits).
  • 2. Ask for a hospital in the Maximum network (art. 6.9) — the nearest: Clinique Dar Essiha
  • 3. See a doctor the same day and leave with the certificate: without an on-the-spot finding, nothing is covered (art. 33).
  • 4. Admitted for more than 24 h? The front desk calls Maximum: direct payment guarantee, no deposit (art. 2.12).
  • 5. Book no ambulance or flight yourself (art. 6.2.2).
  • 6. Once home, file within 30 days (art. 35.7).

Is an Amex, Visa or Mastercard enough in Mauritania?

At today's level 3/4, card by card:

  • Amex Platinum — No area exclusion at this level — but three written limits: deductible and prior approval, 90-day cap, advance under conditions.
  • Visa — No express area exclusion — but a €156,000 cap, 90 days, and the war/instability exclusion in the background.
  • Mastercard — No exclusion in play at this level — but a €155,000 cap and 90 covered days.
  • Three lines to read in your notice: the duration (often 90 days per trip), the settlement (reimbursement afterwards or direct payment of the hospital) and the area exclusion at level 4/4.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Mauritania?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — No area exclusion at this level — compare cap, deductible and covered duration.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.
  • Have your IPID number or the PDF of the terms and ask an expert to call you back: the answer is in the document, not in the brochure.

Can I be treated in Mauritania, or will I be evacuated?

0.3 physicians per 1,000 people (2022) versus 4.5 in Switzerland.

  • With 0.3 physicians per 1,000 people (93% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover. Health spending of 92 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.
  • When the local facility is not enough, Maximum's medical team decides the evacuation to a suitable centre, and pays for it (art. 6.2.2).

Mauritania: safety, in figures?

1.0 homicides per 100,000 people (2020) versus 0.6 in Switzerland and 1.3 in France.

  • 25.6 road deaths per 100,000 people versus 2.2 in Switzerland (World Bank, WHO).
  • The homicide rate is above Switzerland's, without being out of range. On the road, 12 times more deaths than in Switzerland: road crashes are the leading cause of death of healthy travellers (CDC) — seat belt, no night driving, a driver or a taxi from a rank.

Which laws and customs should I know in Mauritania?

Local laws apply to every traveller; here is what the official texts say.

  • You must abide by local laws, which are strictly based on Islamic law and can result in severe penalties, including imprisonment or the death penalty for offenses such as drug trafficking, blasphemy, adultery, and homosexual acts.
  • Dress conservatively and behave discreetly, especially women who should wear a headscarf and cover their arms and legs to avoid offending local sensitivities.
  • It is illegal to import alcohol, pork products, firearms, and drugs; penalties for drug possession are severe, including lengthy prison sentences and potentially the death penalty.
  • During Ramadan, refrain from eating, drinking, or smoking in public between sunrise and sunset, and be aware that driving may be more erratic at dusk.
  • Photographing military installations, airports, government buildings, and religious buildings is forbidden, and you should always seek permission before taking photos of people.
