How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

Recommended vaccines and medicines11

Routine vaccinesCDC ↗

Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before every trip. Some of these vaccines include Chickenpox (Varicella) Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (DTaP, Tdap, or Td) Flu (influenza) Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) Polio Shingles

COVID-19CDC ↗

All eligible travelers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines. Please see  Your COVID-19 Vaccination  for more information.

ChikungunyaCDC ↗

There is an outbreak of chikungunya in Nicaragua. Chikungunya vaccination is recommended for people traveling to an area with a chikungunya outbreak.

Hepatitis ACDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Nicaragua. Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series. Travelers allergic to a vaccine component should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.

Hepatitis BCDC ↗

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers younger than 60 years old traveling to Nicaragua. Unvaccinated travelers 60 years and older may get vaccinated before traveling to Nicaragua.

MalariaCDC ↗

CDC recommends that travelers going to certain areas of Nicaragua take prescription medicine to prevent malaria. Depending on the medicine you take, you will need to start taking this medicine multiple days before your trip, as well as during and after your trip. Talk to your doctor about which malaria medication you should take.

MeaslesCDC ↗

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult your doctor or international vaccination centre at least eight weeks before departure to assess your health and receive vaccination recommendations. Foreign Office
  • Ensure you are up to date with French vaccination calendar, particularly against diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis, pertussis and measles before any trip abroad. France Diplomatie
  • Carry only necessary medications in original packaging with original labels, accompanied by a prescription listing drugs by international non-proprietary name; verify authorisation in your destination country. France Diplomatie
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate must show an injection dated at least ten days before travel; required for travellers over one year and under sixty years from endemic countries. France Diplomatie
  • Private hospitals in Nicaragua require payment in advance, usually in cash; ensure you have adequate travel health insurance and accessible funds for medical treatment and repatriation. Foreign Office
  • Protect against mosquito bites by wearing long clothing, applying repellent to exposed skin, using insecticide-treated nets, and eliminating standing water around accommodation. France Diplomatie

  • Fièvre jaune : la vaccination contre la fièvre jaune est obligatoire pour les voyageurs en provenance, y compris en escale, de pays où il y a un risque de transmission de la fièvre jaune. Liste des pays définie par l’OMS . Le certificat de vaccination international original doit faire état d’une injection pour la fièvre jaune datant d’au moins 10 jours avant la date du voyage. Ce certificat est exigé auprès des voyageurs de plus d’un an et de moins de 60 ans. Les femmes enceintes présentant un certificat médical de grossesse en sont également exemptées ;
  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Tuberculose : chez les enfants de moins de 15 ans en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales ;
  • Chikungunya : en cas d’épidémie ou de séjour prolongé ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Call 911 and ask for an ambulance.

Contact your insurance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

- check the latest vaccine recommendations for Nicaragua

- see where to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

See what health risks you’ll face in Nicaragua , including:

- malaria

- dengue

- Zika virus

Medication

The legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can be different in other countries.

Read best practice when travelling with medicines on TravelHealthPro .

You cannot use British-issued prescriptions locally. To find a pharmacy (‘farmacia’), search online for the nearest big national chain, such as FarmaValue, Farmacia MEDCO, Farmacia Saba, Farmacia Kielsa, or Farmacia El Ahorro.

Healthcare in Nicaragua

Public hospitals in Nicaragua are not well equipped, except for some hospitals in Managua. Emergency medical treatment is normally free in a public hospital but you will be charged for private health care. You may have difficulties without a good understanding of Spanish.

Private hospitals usually take payment for healthcare up front and in cash. A few private hospitals will accept major credit cards. Make sure you have adequate travel health insurance and accessible funds to cover the cost of any medical treatment and repatriation.

Nicaragua - Level 3: Reconsider TravelState Department ↗

Published 2026-05-13

Reconsider travel in Nicaragua due to risk of crime , health , wrongful detention , and arbitrary enforcement of local laws .

U.S. government employee travel restrictions

  • U.S. government employees working in Nicaragua are generally not allowed to drive after dark due to safety risks. These include inadequate street lighting and poor road conditions. However, they are allowed to drive at all times in Managua and on Carretera Masaya between Managua and Granada.
  • U.S. government employees working in Nicaragua are not allowed to use public transportation due to safety risks.
  • U.S. government employees working in Nicaragua are not allowed to go to these places due to safety risks:
  • Managua's Mercado Oriental
  • Managua’s national baseball stadium
  • Casinos and strip clubs
  • Non-personal service contractors traveling to Nicaragua on official U.S. government business must travel on a service passport starting April 15, 2026.

Wrongful Detention

The U.S. Department of State has determined that U.S. nationals are at serious risk of wrongful detention by the Government of Nicaragua. Wrongfully detained U.S. nationals may be held in prison for years, in poor conditions, and without due process or consistent access to U.S. government staff or their family. Familiarize yourself with and respect local laws and customs but be aware that local laws are often applied arbitrarily to those who are seen as government opponents. Foreign travelers may face an increased risk of detention and harassment, even if you are also a citizen of Nicaragua.

The U.S. embassy will work to monitor your health and safety in detention but cannot guarantee your release. Most U.S. nationals who are convicted of committing a crime overseas serve out their sentences in prisons in that country.

Arbitrary enforcement of local laws

Some U.S. citizens have been detained for several weeks or more. Offenders of some crimes can face 50 or more years in prison. The embassy cannot guarantee your release.

The Government of Nicaragua has imposed some exit bans on U.S. citizens that prevent them from leaving the country without a fair and transparent process under the law.

In brief
  • French nationals visiting Nicaragua must verify insurance coverage terms and ensure sufficient financial means for hospitalisation or evacuation costs. France Diplomatie
  • French nationals must register on the Ariane website. The French embassy in Nicaragua no longer issues identity documents; lost passports receive only a laissez-passer for direct return to France, precluding transit through US airports. France Diplomatie
  • Bluefields and immediate surroundings are advised against except for imperative reasons due to high insecurity involving drug and human trafficking. The rest of the country is under heightened vigilance. France Diplomatie
  • Avoid night travel by any means. Do not share taxis with strangers or allow taxis to pick up additional passengers en route. Decline offers to share private vehicles to reduce costs due to extortion and kidnapping risks. France Diplomatie
  • Western Nicaragua experiences active seismic and volcanic activity; Managua was destroyed in 1931 and 1972. Monitor the National Hurricane Center website during cyclone season (May to November). Forest fire risk peaks January to June. France Diplomatie
  • In bars and nightclubs, never leave drinks unattended; scopolamine and GHB have been used to incapacitate victims. Store passports in hotel safes; carry only copies of identity and entry stamp pages. France Diplomatie

Avertissement

  • limiter ses déplacements ;

  • voyagez de préférence en groupe;
  • ne portez pas d'objets de valeur sur vous (montre, bijoux, etc.) ni d’importantes sommes d'argent;
  • déposez vos documents dans le coffre de l'hôtel; gardez toutefois toujours une photocopie du passeport sur vous (y compris la page comportant le tampon d'entrée);
  • choisissez un hébergement qui dispose d’un service de garde;
  • ne laissez jamais votre véhicule sans surveillance. Utilisez les nombreux emplacements de stationnement surveillés (la rétribution du personnel de garde est à la charge des automobilistes);
  • évitez de visiter les quartiers urbains défavorisés;
  • Les distributeurs automatiques d’argent peuvent être manipulés à des fins criminelles. Utilisez exclusivement des guichets bancaires automatiques placés sous surveillance à l'intérieur de banques;
  • faites preuve d'une grande méfiance si des personnes inconnues ou de simples connaissances (y compris des jeunes) vous proposent leur aide, pour trouver un taxi par exemple. Il peut arriver que des vols soient commis lors de prétendues offres d'aide;
  • n’empruntez que des taxis que vous-même ou votre hôtel avez commandés par téléphone (p. ex. auprès d’une coopérative). Si vous prenez un taxi dans la rue, assurez-vous qu’il soit muni de plaques rouges et du signe « taxi » sur le toit. Insistez toujours pour qu’aucun passager supplémentaire ne monte à bord. N’utilisez pas non plus de taxis collectifs;
  • faites preuve d’attention lors des promenades et évitez de vous promener après la tombée de la nuit, même dans les villes;

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe abroad and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Nicaragua

Although there is no recent history of terrorism in Nicaragua, attacks cannot be ruled out.

Political situation

Demonstrations and gatherings can turn violent. It is illegal for foreigners to take part in any sort of political activity in Nicaragua. You can be arrested and detained or deported for:

  • taking part in a protest
  • breach of the peace
  • any activity seen as acting against the government, including political meetings and campaigns
  • using Nicaragua’s national flag or colours (blue and white) for campaigning or protesting

Demonstrations can also lead to travel disruption. Check local information before travelling.

Violent crime

Foreign nationals have been affected by violent crime in Nicaragua. Criminals often carry out attacks on people in vehicles. To reduce the risk to yourself and your belongings:

  • keep the windows of your car closed and the doors locked
  • avoid public transport after dark

Take care when walking around markets, bus stations, around the old cathedral in Managua and in the poorer areas of towns. Do not visit these areas after dark on foot.

If you are robbed, do not resist, as many criminals carry weapons. If you report the incident to the police, get a signed and stamped copy of the police report.

Taxi safety and criminal kidnap

There is a risk of ‘express kidnapping’ if you use an unauthorised taxi. You could be taken hostage and forced to pay cash for your release.

Reduce the risk by:

  • using a radio-dispatched taxi or an authorised taxi with red plates
  • making sure the driver’s ID number, name and photograph are clearly visible on the dashboard
  • making a note of the colour and number of the vehicle before you get in

It is a common local practice to share taxis with strangers, but tourists have been robbed when taking taxis called by strangers. Do not take a taxi if it has been called for you by someone you do not know well. You should also avoid using ‘colectivos’ (minibuses).

Sexual assault

If you’re a woman, use hotels that have staff at the front desk 24 hours a day and have adequate security measures. Read the advice for women travelling abroad .

Risks when exchanging money

There is a risk when exchanging money on the street that you could be assaulted or targeted by muggers. There are often money changers with official identification at the front of banks, where there is likely to be better security. You can also withdraw cash in US dollars or Nicaraguan cordobas from ATMs.

Illegal drugs and prison sentences

Do not become involved with drugs of any kind. Possession of even small quantities can lead to imprisonment.

Flying drones

There is a prohibition on the possession and use of drones. Law 1230 introduced in December 2024 requires people in possession of drones to hand them in to the authorities. You may wish to take legal advice on how to do this.

Swimming safety

There are strong currents off sections of Nicaragua’s Pacific coast and people have drowned. There are no warning signs or…

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. It does not apply between Canada and Nicaragua. If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Nicaragua by an abducting parent:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Nicaragua to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies. Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Driving

You can drive in Nicaragua with a valid Canadian driver’s licence. It is prohibited for children to ride as passengers on motorcycles. The nationwide speed limits are 50 km/h for vehicles and 40 km/h for motorcycles, regardless of signage on the roads indicating otherwise. Failure to respect these speed limits will result in fines. In the event of a car accident:

  • remain at the scene
  • call 118 to report the accident and request Transit Police
  • don’t move your vehicle until the authorities arrive

Leaving the scene may be considered an admission of guilt under Nicaraguan law. However, police may not respond, especially overnight. If you feel unsafe:

  • ensure your windows and doors are closed and locked
  • drive to the nearest police station or a secure location
  • report the accident to the police and your insurance company as soon as possible

If you are involved in a road accident causing injuries, you may be detained until a legal decision is made, regardless of culpability.

Money

The currency in Nicaragua is the córdoba (NIO). You cannot exchange Canadian dollars in Nicaragua. However, you can easily exchange U.S. dollars. Credit cards are usually accepted. However, ATMs outside of major cities may not be available. Exchange foreign currency at banks or official exchange offices only.

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Nicaragua’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Nicaragua set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Nicaraguan Embassy in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

To enter Nicaragua, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

You can visit Nicaragua for up to 90 days without a visa. You may be refused entry if you do not have an onward ticket.

Check with your travel company or nearest Nicaraguan embassy what the policy is for entry at the Nicaraguan border.

Travelling between Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras

You can travel between Nicaragua, Guatemala, and El Salvador for up to 90 days without a visa. The CA-4 Agreement also includes Honduras, however British Nationals must have a visa to visit Honduras. If you’re entering Honduras, read the entry requirements . Read the travel advice for:

  • Guatemala
  • El Salvador

The 90-day period starts when you enter any of these countries and does not restart when you cross borders. You’ll have to go through immigration checks at borders. If you’re expelled from one of these countries, you’re also excluded from the other 3.

In Nicaragua, you can extend your stay by up to 30 days by paying a fee before the 90 days expires. If you overstay, you may get a fine.

Vaccine requirements

To enter Nicaragua, you must have a certificate to prove you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination if you’re coming from a country listed as a transmission risk .

For full details about medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, see TravelHealthPro’s Nicaragua guide .

Travelling with children with Nicaraguan nationality

Children with single or dual Nicaraguan nationality may need certain documents to leave Nicaragua with one parent or a third party. Check with the local authorities.

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Nicaragua. You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty. Contact the Nicaraguan Embassy in the UK for more information.

Electronic cigarettes

There is a ban on electronic smoking devices such as e-cigarettes in Nicaragua. You cannot import, export, sell, store or use these devices, with or without nicotine. Customs officials can confiscate these products at the border.

Taking money into Nicaragua

The US dollar, either in cash or travellers cheques, is the only foreign currency freely exchangeable in Nicaragua. Banks do not exchange British pounds.

American passport — U.S. Department of State

The State Department publishes the requirements ("Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements") on its country page, which our servers cannot read. Read it before you go; as a guide, the French and British requirements below describe the same rules as seen by two other governments.travel.state.gov ↗

Transport and infrastructure

What are the entry requirements for Nicaragua with my passport?

Is an Amex, Visa or Mastercard enough in Nicaragua?

At today's level 3/4, card by card:

  • Amex Platinum — No area exclusion at this level — but three written limits: deductible and prior approval, 90-day cap, advance under conditions.
  • Visa — No express area exclusion — but a €156,000 cap, 90 days, and the war/instability exclusion in the background.
  • Mastercard — No exclusion in play at this level — but a €155,000 cap and 90 covered days.
  • Three lines to read in your notice: the duration (often 90 days per trip), the settlement (reimbursement afterwards or direct payment of the hospital) and the area exclusion at level 4/4.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Nicaragua?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — No area exclusion at this level — compare cap, deductible and covered duration.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.
  • Have your IPID number or the PDF of the terms and ask an expert to call you back: the answer is in the document, not in the brochure.

How do I use the medical network on this page?

The page reads hospitals, pharmacies and doctors from OpenStreetMap, around the point you choose.

  • Type your city, hotel or beach: the map re-centres, 24/7 emergency rooms come first.
  • Each row gives the phone when the source publishes it, the nearest street, directions and the Google Maps listing.
  • The PDF briefing repeats the same places, numbered on a printable map.
  • No customer reviews: OpenStreetMap has none, and we invent none.

Can I be treated in Nicaragua, or will I be evacuated?

0.7 physicians per 1,000 people (2018) versus 4.5 in Switzerland.

  • 1.0 hospital beds per 1,000 people versus 4.4 in Switzerland (World Bank).
  • With 0.7 physicians per 1,000 people (84% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover. Health spending of 217 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.
  • When the local facility is not enough, Maximum's medical team decides the evacuation to a suitable centre, and pays for it (art. 6.2.2).

Nicaragua: safety, in figures?

11.3 homicides per 100,000 people (2021) versus 0.6 in Switzerland and 1.3 in France.

  • 16.9 road deaths per 100,000 people versus 2.2 in Switzerland (World Bank, WHO).
  • The homicide rate is 19 times Switzerland's: violence is a real risk there, concentrated in the areas named by the official advisories. On the road, 8 times more deaths than in Switzerland: road crashes are the leading cause of death of healthy travellers (CDC) — seat belt, no night driving, a driver or a taxi from a rank.
