How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Health — Foreign Office

Before you travel check that:

  • your destination can provide the healthcare you may need
  • you have appropriate travel insurance for local treatment or unexpected medical evacuation

This is particularly important if you have a health condition or are pregnant.

Emergency medical number

Call 113 and ask for an ambulance.

Contact your insurance company quickly if you’re referred to a medical facility for treatment.

Vaccine recommendations and health risks

At least 8 weeks before your trip:

  • check the latest vaccine recommendations for Latvia
  • see where to get vaccines and whether you have to pay on the NHS travel vaccinations page

See what health risks you’ll face in Latvia , including tick bites during the warm season between March and October. Tick bites occasionally carry diseases like encephalitis and Lyme disease.

Medication

The legal status and regulation of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK can be different in other countries.

Read best practice when travelling with medicines on TravelHealthPro .

Healthcare in Latvia

FCDO has a list of medical facilities in Latvia where some staff will speak English.

Health insurance cards

To get medically necessary state healthcare in Latvia, you need a Global Health Insurance Card ( GHIC ) or a European Health Insurance Card ( EHIC ).

The NHS’s getting healthcare abroad webpage has details about:

  • how to apply for a GHIC
  • how to get temporary cover if you lose your card or it does not arrive in time
  • who qualifies for a new EHIC instead of a GHIC
  • what treatment counts as medically necessary

A GHIC or EHIC is not an alternative to travel insurance. You may have costs your GHIC or EHIC does not cover, including:

  • changes to travel and accommodation bookings
  • additional standard costs for treatment
  • medical repatriation to the UK
  • treatment that is ruled non-urgent
  • private healthcare
  • private clinics

There is also guidance on healthcare if you’re living in Latvia .

State Border Guard

Crime

Terrorism

There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. Stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

UK Counter Terrorism Policing has information and advice on staying safe and what to do in the event of a terrorist attack. Find out how to reduce your risk from terrorism while abroad .

Terrorism in Latvia

Although there’s no recent history of terrorism in Latvia, attacks cannot be ruled out.

Belarus border

FCDO  currently advises against all travel to Belarus . There is limited access along parts of Latvia’s border with Belarus. The Silene-Urbani road border crossing is currently closed. More border checkpoints may close or implement restrictions at short notice.

Access to within 2km of the border with Belarus is limited. If you wish to enter the border area, you are required to obtain a special licence issued by the Latvian Border Guard. You should abide by this limitation at all times and follow the instructions of Latvian authorities if you are in this area.

Protecting yourself and your belongings

Petty crime, particularly bag snatching and pickpocketing, is a greater risk in:

  • Riga Old Town
  • Central Market
  • central train and bus stations

Take extra care in these areas and:

  • avoid unlit streets and parks at night
  • stay alert if walking alone and be wary of people who approach you
  • keep your documents and valuables in hotel safes or somewhere secure
Scams

Some tourists have been charged high prices for drinks or have found fraudulent transactions on their credit and debit cards. You should:

  • make sure a transaction on a credit or debit card is completed in your presence
  • be wary of attempts to make you re-enter your PIN
  • get recommendations for bars and clubs from trustworthy sources
Bank card fraud

Fraudsters can steal your card details without you noticing. Use ATMs inside banks if possible, and check ATMs on the street for signs of tampering. Keep cards in sight when paying in shops and restaurants. Read more about how to avoid bank card fraud.

Drink and food spiking

There have been instances of drink spiking in Riga and elsewhere in Latvia. Do not leave drinks unattended and be wary of accepting food and drink from strangers in bars, nightclubs and restaurants.

Theft from vehicles

Try to use car parks with CCTV. Make sure your vehicle is locked and your belongings are out of sight.

Personal ID

Always carry a copy of your passport’s photo page.

Alcohol laws and bans

Drinking alcohol in public, including in parks and in the streets, is illegal. The police could arrest and fine you.

Illegal drugs

Illegal drugs, including cannabis, are strictly prohibited, even in very small quantities. Severe penalties apply for possessing, using, buying, or smuggling illegal drugs, including when transiting through airports. You should expect long jail sentences of up to 10 years and heavy fines.

Airports in Latvia have excellent technology and security for detecting illegal items. This is also used to scan the baggage of transiting passengers.

Public transport

You can get on-the-spot fines for travelling on public transport without a ticket or with an unvalidated ticket. Validate your ticket with the machine as soon as you board the bus or tram.

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. The convention applies between Canada and Latvia. If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Latvia, and if the applicable conditions are met, you may apply for the return of your child to the Latvian court. If you are in this situation:

  • act as quickly as you can
  • contact the Central Authority for your province or territory of residence for information on starting an application under The Hague Convention
  • consult a lawyer in Canada and in Latvia to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
  • report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children's Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies. Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Drones

Latvian and European laws regulate recreational and commercial drone operation. You must register as a drone operator and apply for authorisation with the Latvian authorities. Depending on the size of your drone and the intended use, you may also need to take a proof of competency exam. Certain areas are restricted or off limits for personal drones. These include:

  • military sites
  • certain nature conservation areas
  • areas within 5 km of airports

If you don’t comply with these laws, your drone could be confiscated and you could face heavy fines, arrest and detention. You could also be deported and banned from the entire Schengen area.

Export of religious items and antiquities

Latvia enforces strict laws on the purchase and export of antiquities and objects of cultural heritage. You should confirm with the Latvian authorities before exporting or leaving the country with such items.

Driving

You can drive in Latvia with your valid Canadian driver’s licence for one year. Penalties for drinking and driving are severe. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.02% for drivers with less than two years of driving experience and 0.05% for others. If a police officer suspects you of drinking and driving, they could confiscate your driver's licence on the spot. If you’re convicted, you can expect heavy fines or jail sentences. If you are involved in an accident, do not move your vehicle until authorized to do so by the police. All vehicles must have a first aid kit and emergency travel equipment. Reflective items

Pedestrians are required to wear small reflectors from dusk until dawn on unlit roads or along roads in rural areas. These are usually worn as vests or pinned to coats or bags.

Money

The currency of Latvia is the Euro (EUR). If you are carrying €10,000 or more, or the equivalent in other currencies or monetary instruments, you must make a declaration to customs when you enter or leave the European Union.

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of the current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Latvia set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Latvian Embassy in the UK .

British-Russian dual nationals

If you hold dual nationality with Russia, you could be refused entry to Latvia. See current legal guidance for Russian citizens , which is now in force until 1 January 2027.

Passport validity requirements

Latvia follows Schengen area rules . Your passport must:

- have a ‘date of issue’ less than 10 years before the date you arrive – if you renewed your passport before 1 October 2018, it might have a date of issue that is more than 10 years ago, making it invalid for entry to the Schengen area

- have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area (the expiry date does not need to be within 10 years of the date of issue)

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

You can travel without a visa to the Schengen area , which includes Latvia, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This applies if you travel:

  • as a tourist
  • to visit family or friends
  • to attend business meetings, cultural or sports events
  • for short-term studies or training

The requirements for working in Latvia are different.

If you’re travelling to other Schengen countries as well, make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day visa-free limit. Visits to Schengen countries in the 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days. If you overstay the 90-day visa-free limit, you may be banned from entering Schengen countries for up to 3 years.

At Latvian border control, you may need to:

  • show proof of your accommodation, for example, a hotel booking confirmation or proof of address for a second home
  • show proof of your travel insurance, including health cover and medical repatriation
  • show a return or onward ticket
  • prove that you have enough money for your stay – the amount varies depending on your accommodation
Staying longer than 90 days in a 180-day period

To stay longer, you must meet the Latvian government’s entry requirements. Check which type of visa you need with the Latvian Embassy in the UK .

If you’re in Latvia with a residence permit or long-stay visa, this does not count towards your 90-day visa-free limit.

Read about entry processes if you live in Latvia .

Health spending of 1,645 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.

Frequently asked questions — travel insurance Latvia

24/7 support number — +41 22 ••• •• ••An adviser goes through each question with you until you have an actionable answer: cover, hospital, entry rules, claims. Full number in your client area. You can also ask Maximum directly, just below these questions.
What is the official risk level in Latvia today?

Level 1/4 — Exercise Normal Precautions, U.S. Department of State, retrieved on 31 October 2026.

  • Is the whole country advised against? United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no (reading of 24 October 2026).
  • Contractually, only an FDFA, FOPH or WHO advisory against the trip opens Module A (art. 18.1) — that is not the case today.
  • Travel with international medical cover and the 24/7 number (+41 22 ••• •• ••) saved: here the risk is not the advisory, it is the hospital bill.
  • We check these sources every morning and e-mail you the day one changes (Alerts button).

Is the whole of Latvia advised against, or only some areas?

An area advised against does not rule out the country.

  • Official answers: United States: no · France: no · United Kingdom: no · Switzerland: no.
  • Keep your country of residence's advisory on booking day and on departure day: that is what your policy's clauses cite.

What are the entry requirements for Latvia with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): French travellers staying in Latvia for less than three months must carry a valid French national identity card or a valid passport for the entire stay. Foreign nationals from outside the EU holding a Schengen residence permit may stay in Latvia up to 90 days per six-month period without a visa. French CNIs issued to adults between 1 January 2004 and 31 December 2013 remain valid for five years after the printed expiry date, but Latvian authorities recommend using a valid passport to avoid issues.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): British citizens with dual Russian nationality may be refused entry to Latvia until January 1, 2027. Your passport must have been issued less than 10 years ago and expire at least 3 months after your departure from the Schengen area. British citizens returning to the UK must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a Latvia visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (EUR 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.
  • Attach it to the visa file; if in doubt about the format, write to us.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Latvia?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
