How we read these four advisories

Every country has its own scale, so we ask them all the same question: is the whole country advised against?

An advisory covering only areas of the country does not raise the answer: it stays “No”, and the area is shown in the relevant column.

The level shown on this page — and across this site — is the one published by the U.S. State Department, from 1 (normal precautions) to 4 (do not travel). France and the United Kingdom publish their own advisories, with their own rules: they add to that level, they do not replace it.

The official advice, in full

Source: France Diplomatie (health advice, in French).

In brief
  • Consult your GP or an international travel health clinic to assess your health and receive vaccination recommendations before departure, and consider a dental check-up. France Diplomatie
  • Pack a personal pharmacy with only necessary medications in original packaging with labels and an international non-proprietary name prescription; never use street-bought drugs and verify medication legality in the destination country. France Diplomatie
  • Ensure routine French vaccinations (diphtheria, tetanus, polio, whooping cough, measles) are up to date; yellow fever vaccination is mandatory if arriving from endemic zones. France Diplomatie
  • For mosquito-borne diseases (chikungunya, dengue, Zika), use protective measures (long clothing, repellents, mosquito nets) and consult a doctor immediately if symptoms appear; avoid anti-inflammatories for dengue. France Diplomatie
  • Follow strict food and water hygiene: wash hands, drink only bottled or treated water, avoid raw foods, and peel fruits and vegetables; cook food thoroughly. France Diplomatie
  • British travellers to Dominica should check healthcare availability, secure travel insurance covering local treatment and evacuation, and verify medication legality; call 999 for an ambulance and contact your insurer if hospitalised. Foreign Office

  • Fièvre jaune : o bligatoire pour les voyageurs en provenance de zones d’endémie ;
  • Hépatite A : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Fièvre typhoïde : en fonction des conditions et de la durée de séjour ;
  • Tuberculose : chez les enfants de moins de 15 ans en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Hépatite B : en cas de séjours fréquents ou prolongés ;
  • Rage : notamment enfants en bas âge, séjour en milieu rural ou éloigné des villes principales ;
  • Chikungunya : en cas d’épidémie ou de séjour prolongé ;

  • Porter des vêtements longs et couvrants ;
  • Appliquer des produits répulsifs cutanés sur les zones découvertes du corps ;
  • Protéger son logement (moustiquaires imprégnées d’insecticide, diffuseurs électriques, serpentins à l’extérieur, climatisation, etc.) ;

  • Se laver les mains régulièrement avec de l’eau et du savon ou des solutions de lavage hydroalcooliques, surtout avant et après les repas et le passage aux toilettes ;
  • Veiller à la qualité des aliments et surtout à leur bonne cuisson ;
  • Éviter la consommation de produits alimentaires (poisson, viande, volaille, lait) crus ou peu cuits ;
  • Peler les fruits et légumes ou les laver soigneusement (à l’eau saine) ;
  • Éviter les crudités, coquillages, plats réchauffés et buffets froids ;

Healthcare in Dominica

FCDO has a list of medical providers in Dominica .

The Dominica China Friendship Hospital, the government hospital in Roseau, can cope with many types of treatment, but serious cases may require emergency evacuation.

Before choosing to be treated at a private facility, you should check the payment policy. Private clinics may ask for payment up front, so insurance documents may not be sufficient.

Private medical treatment in Dominica can be expensive. Make sure you have adequate travel health insurance and accessible funds to cover the cost of any medical treatment abroad and repatriation.

  • de suivre l’évolution des ouragans sur le site du National Hurricane Center (en anglais) ;
  • de se conformer aux recommandations relatives aux risques climatiques (cyclones et ouragans) ;

The main highway from Douglas Charles Airport is prone to landslides after bad weather and there are sheer drops where the road has fallen away. Avoid driving on this road at night.

Entry requirements — rules for a British passport

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of Dominica’s current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Dominica set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Dominica High Commission in the UK .

Passport validity requirements

To enter Dominica, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Dual nationals

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement . See Dual citizenship .

Visa requirements

You do not need a visa to visit Dominica. The border authorities will grant you a stay of 6 months on arrival. If you want to stay longer, you must arrange and pay for an extension with the Dominica Immigration Division .

It is illegal to overstay or work without a work permit.

Checks at border control

At border control, you may also need to show a return or onward ticket.

Departure tax

There is a departure tax of 86 East Caribbean dollars or 33 US dollars. It is usually included in the cost of your plane ticket. You also need to pay departure tax if travelling by ferry.

Vaccine requirements

To enter Dominica, you must have a certificate to prove you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination if you’re coming from a country listed as a transmission risk .

For full details about medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, see TravelHealthPro’s Dominica guide .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Dominica . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Taking money into Dominica

Declare cash or travellers cheques if the value is 10,000 East Caribbean dollars or more. You will get a certified declaration to show you brought it in with you.

  • Contractually, only an FDFA, FOPH or WHO advisory against the trip opens Module A (art. 18.1) — that is not the case today.
  • Travel with international medical cover and the 24/7 number (+41 22 ••• •• ••) saved: here the risk is not the advisory, it is the hospital bill.
  • We check these sources every morning and e-mail you the day one changes (Alerts button).

Is the whole of Dominica advised against, or only some areas?

An area advised against does not rule out the country.

What are the entry requirements for Dominica with my passport?

The rules depend on the passport, not on the destination alone.

  • French passport (France Diplomatie): All Covid-19 entry restrictions to Dominica have been lifted for all travellers. French nationals staying less than 90 days do not need a visa; a valid passport and return ticket grant a 30-day visitors permit renewable up to 90 days. Beyond 90 days, a residence permit must be requested from Dominica’s immigration services.
  • British passport (Foreign Office): Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date to enter Dominica, or you will be denied entry. British citizens do not need a visa for Dominica but receive a 6-month stay on arrival; extensions must be arranged and paid for with the Dominica Immigration Division. You must present a return or onward ticket at border control in Dominica.
  • American passport: the requirements are on the State Department country page (travel.state.gov).
  • Swiss passport: the FDFA refers you to the destination's embassy in Switzerland.
  • Pick your passport at the top of Before you go › Entry: the official text that concerns you comes first, with its “In brief” summary.

Do I need an insurance certificate for a Dominica visa?

For a Schengen visa, yes: at least €30,000 of travel medical insurance (Regulation (EC) No 810/2009, art. 15).

  • Many other countries ask for it on entry or for a visa, case by case: check Before you go › Entry, with your passport.
  • Subscribe: the named certificate arrives by e-mail on payment, with your name, dates and limits (EUR 1.5M medical expenses, unlimited evacuation and repatriation) — the ones consulates check.
  • Attach it to the visa file; if in doubt about the format, write to us.

Is an Amex, Visa or Mastercard enough in Dominica?

  • Visa — No express area exclusion — but a €156,000 cap, 90 days, and the war/instability exclusion in the background.
  • Mastercard — No exclusion in play at this level — but a €155,000 cap and 90 covered days.

Are a health plan or a travel policy enough in Dominica?

A health plan reimburses at home; here, the hospital asks for a payment guarantee before admission.

  • Health plan — A health plan treats you at home. Here the hospital asks for a guarantee before admission — not a later reimbursement.
  • Travel policy — No area exclusion at this level — compare cap, deductible and covered duration.
  • A travel policy often has a territorial clause at level 4/4 and a 90-day limit per trip.
  • Have your IPID number or the PDF of the terms and ask an expert to call you back: the answer is in the document, not in the brochure.

How do I use the medical network on this page?

Can I be treated in Dominica, or will I be evacuated?

1.2 physicians per 1,000 people (2018) versus 4.5 in Switzerland.

  • 4.0 hospital beds per 1,000 people versus 4.4 in Switzerland (World Bank).
  • With 1.2 physicians per 1,000 people (73% fewer than Switzerland), the nearest hospital does not always have the capacity for a serious case: evacuation to an adequate centre is the rule, not the exception — that is what unlimited evacuation and repatriation cover. Health spending of 492 USD per person (Switzerland: 11,784) goes with private hospitals that bill foreigners in hard currency and ask for a guarantee before admission: the direct payment guarantee is what avoids the deposit.
  • When the local facility is not enough, Maximum's medical team decides the evacuation to a suitable centre, and pays for it (art. 6.2.2).

Dominica: safety, in figures?

27.1 homicides per 100,000 people (2023) versus 0.6 in Switzerland and 1.3 in France.

  • 10.9 road deaths per 100,000 people versus 2.2 in Switzerland (World Bank, WHO).
  • The homicide rate is 45 times Switzerland's: violence is a real risk there, concentrated in the areas named by the official advisories. On the road, 5 times more deaths than in Switzerland: road crashes are the leading cause of death of healthy travellers (CDC) — seat belt, no night driving, a driver or a taxi from a rank.
