Maximum Insurance / What does a standard travel policy exclude, and who fronts the money?
One policy was read document in hand: the general provisions « Évasio temporaire » of Europ Assistance, reference EA5117/2, version 03.2021. Two lines decide almost everything in it. Chapter 1.D, pages 2-3, rules out travel to formally advised-against areas. And the hospital is settled by an advance, not by a direct commitment from the insurer to the facility.

Travel to destinations that the authorities formally advise against. Exact wording — general provisions « Évasio temporaire », Europ Assistance, reference EA5117/2, 03.2021, chapter 1.D, pages 2-3:
« ne sont pas couverts les Voyages vers un pays, une région ou une zone vers lesquels les voyages sont formellement déconseillés par les autorités gouvernementales » (travel to a country, region or area to which government authorities formally advise against travel is not covered).
One word is missing from that sentence, and its absence is the most notable thing about it: no authority is named. The text speaks of « les autorités gouvernementales » (government authorities) without saying which — those of the country of residence, those of the country visited, or others again. A card notice treating the same subject may, by contrast, designate a specific ministry: that is the case of article 5.5 taken apart in the World Elite Mastercard file. Here, the imprecision is in the policy itself. Évasio temporaire general provisions, EA5117/2, 03.2021 (PDF).
The patient first, the insurer afterwards. On the terms quoted, this policy provides for a hospital advance, and failing that reimbursement against receipts. It is the most widespread route on the market, and the one that shows up on the day a finance desk asks for a deposit before admitting: somebody has to pay on the spot, then produce the paperwork to be reimbursed.
The other route exists: the direct payment guarantee, where the insurer commits to the facility and settles it itself. What that mechanism changes in practice at admission is covered in full in the file on who pays the hospital abroad, and is not repeated here. This page records only which of the two routes the Évasio temporaire provisions retain: the advance.
Three things, which you therefore need to have elsewhere. Immediate payment capacity, compatible with the sum demanded and with the ceilings on your means of payment. Somebody in a fit state to trigger it, which is not a given when the insured person is the one being admitted. And the receipts, kept and then sent on, since reimbursement will be made against them. For a company, those three conditions rest on the employee, abroad, with whatever means are to hand: that is the point addressed by the corporate pack.
| What is recorded | In the « Évasio temporaire » provisions, EA5117/2, 03.2021 |
|---|---|
| Medical expenses abroad | €150,000 to €300,000 depending on the area |
| Excess | €30 |
| Duration covered | 90 consecutive days at most |
| Hospital admission | Hospital advance, failing that reimbursement against receipts |
| Formally advised-against area | Express exclusion — chapter 1.D, pages 2-3 |
| Certificate for a visa | Not settled by the terms quoted |
Duration is the least read of the first three lines: it is noticed neither when the policy is taken out nor on departure, but on the day an assignment runs long. As for the limit, it is read with an order of magnitude in mind: a medical repatriation is estimated at €37,000 to €200,000 from Colombia (ADAC) and €14,000 to €200,000 from Mexico (Mexperience). The upper end of those ranges exceeds the lower bound of the policy. The repatriation file gives the country-by-country detail.
A single document was read, and it holds only for itself: the general provisions of the « Évasio temporaire » policy, in the 03.2021 version. Neither the other policies in the Évasio range nor those of other insurers inherit from it. Two policies sold under one brand may differ on every line of the table above. It is the document handed to you, in the version in force, that governs — which is why no general conclusion is drawn here from the single policy read.
Where these provisions call for an advance, the VIP Pack commits the insurer to the facility: a direct TSM/AXA payment guarantee, with the hospital bill settled without the patient or the employer fronting the cost, within the CHF/EUR/USD 1,500,000 of emergency medical expenses abroad the contract carries. The mechanism is described on the page on who pays the hospital abroad, the amounts and the insurer in the bank card insurance file, and the benefit-by-benefit comparison with an existing policy in the Amex Platinum file. Price: $990 for twelve months, or $99 a month.
Start with what you already hold: a premium card often carries travel insurance, with bounds of its own, and paying twice for the same benefit is common. The official rating of the destination is then checked country by country on the alerts map, and the area clauses of the four public documents are gathered in the advised-against countries file. For a team: the Duty of Care OS.
In the single policy read here, no: the general provisions « Évasio temporaire » of Europ Assistance, reference EA5117/2, 03.2021, state at chapter 1.D, pages 2-3, that « ne sont pas couverts les Voyages vers un pays, une région ou une zone vers lesquels les voyages sont formellement déconseillés par les autorités gouvernementales » (travel to a country, region or area formally advised against by government authorities is not covered). That finding holds for this policy, in this version: every policy carries its own provisions, and the document handed to you governs.
None in particular. Chapter 1.D of the general provisions « Évasio temporaire » (EA5117/2, 03.2021) targets travel formally advised against « par les autorités gouvernementales » (by government authorities), without naming an administration. That is a sharp drafting difference from the World Elite Mastercard notice issued by Fortuneo, version 01.2026, whose article 5.5 designates the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs.
The patient advances, the insurer reimburses afterwards. On the terms quoted in the « Évasio temporaire » policy of Europ Assistance (EA5117/2, 03.2021), a hospital advance is provided for, and failing that reimbursement is made against receipts. You therefore need, on the spot, immediate payment capacity, somebody in a fit state to trigger it, and the receipts to produce afterwards.
The terms quoted in these general provisions (EA5117/2, 03.2021) retain the hospital advance, and failing that reimbursement against receipts — the other route from the direct payment guarantee, in which the insurer commits to the facility and settles it itself. The Maximum Insurance VIP Pack takes that second route, with a direct TSM/AXA payment guarantee.
€150,000 to €300,000 depending on the area, with a €30 excess and cover limited to 90 consecutive days, in the general provisions « Évasio temporaire », reference EA5117/2, version 03.2021. That figure holds neither for the rest of the Évasio range nor for another insurer's policy: record the limit, the excess and the duration in your own general provisions.
No. The document read is that of the « Évasio temporaire » policy of Europ Assistance, reference EA5117/2, version 03.2021: its chapter 1.D, its limits of €150,000 to €300,000 and its 90 consecutive days hold for that policy, in that version. No conclusion is drawn here about the other policies in the range or about other insurers' contracts.
The terms quoted in these general provisions (EA5117/2, 03.2021) do not settle that point, and the format required varies from consulate to consulate: check your own terms and the document asked for before filing an application. The Maximum Insurance VIP Pack issues a nominative TSM insurance certificate accepted for visa applications, Schengen included.
Pack VIP: $990 for twelve months, unlimited trips. CHF 1.5M emergency medical, unlimited evacuation and repatriation, TSM/AXA direct payment guarantee in hospital.
