Maximum Insurance / How long does your Amex Platinum actually insure a trip?
A Platinum Card stays valid all year; its travel insurance does not. The French general terms applicable from 01/01/2025 stop the cover at 90 consecutive days per trip, whatever the destination. Around that duration boundary sit a €2,000,000 medical limit, a 10% excess, the insurer's prior agreement and general exclusion no. 11, aimed at countries your government advises against.

The French general terms of the American Express Platinum Card, applicable from 01/01/2025, cap cover at 90 consecutive days per trip. That limit depends neither on the destination, nor on the purpose of the trip, nor on the amount spent: it is counted in days. A six-month assignment, a working season abroad, a round-the-world trip all fall outside it on day 91 — while the card itself stays valid and keeps paying. It is the costliest gap to overlook, because nothing flags it at the moment it opens.
| What is recorded | In the Amex Platinum France T&Cs, 01.2025 |
|---|---|
| Duration covered | 90 consecutive days maximum per trip |
| Medical expenses limit | €2,000,000 |
| Excess | 10%, minimum €150, maximum €500 |
| Insurer's agreement | Prior agreement required before care |
| Payment of the trip | Trip paid for with the Card |
| Country your government advises against | Express exclusion — general exclusions no. 11, page 11 |
All six lines come from a single public document: Amex Platinum France T&Cs, 01.2025 — general exclusion n° 11, p. 11.
The contract's other limits are amounts: you can argue with them, weigh them against the price of treatment, work out what you would be left paying. Not so with duration. On day 90 no limit has been reached, no excess has been used, the card fee is paid up — and the travel cover stops all the same. A policy bought for the year and a policy attached to a trip therefore cannot be compared limit against limit: they do not cover the same thing.
The €2,000,000 limit is the visible figure; three clauses recorded in the same place decide what actually reaches your account. The 10% excess, with a €150 minimum and a €500 maximum, is deducted from the reimbursement. The insurer's prior agreement has to be obtained before care, which means reaching someone before you are treated, not afterwards. And the trip must have been paid for with the Card: that payment is what opens the medical expenses cover. None of the three shaves the headline limit; together they set when the cover engages and how much you are left carrying. An advance is provided for hospital admission, prior agreement still being required.

The load-bearing word is "general": the exclusion does not target one cover but every travel cover in the policy — medical, repatriation, cancellation, baggage. And its trigger is not a list published by the insurer, it is your own government's position, which moves. We record the official level for 207 countries every morning, and the changes are dated in the alerts feed.
An insurance contract is read in the document handed to the cardholder, in the version in force, not in the name printed on the card. Everything above comes from one dated edition: the French terms of the American Express Platinum Card applicable from 01/01/2025. A later edition of the same document may carry different amounts, different durations, different exclusions; a card from an equivalent range issued in another country is not governed by this text at all. The bank card insurance file applies the same rule to the four products it compares, and the Visa Infinite comparison shows how far the drafting of an exclusion can shift from one issuer to another.
The VIP Pack is not tied to a departure: it runs for twelve months and trips within the year are unlimited. There is no day 91 to watch for, and no requirement to pay for the trip with a particular card to switch the cover on. The policy is underwritten by TSM Compagnie d'Assurances, a Swiss insurer founded in 1921, and distributed by WinHealth Group SA, a broker authorised by FINMA under no. F01210623; assistance runs on the AXA network — 40,000 accredited hospitals and providers.
The VIP Extreme Pack, $2,290 for twelve months or $229 a month, adds trip cancellation or modification up to CHF/EUR/USD 20,000 per person, and Module A special-risk cancellation up to CHF 5,000 per person — political event, attack, epidemic, natural disaster. Two of its covers remain subject to eligibility: crisis management and security (GardaWorld / AXA) and Kidnap & Ransom (general terms, art. 18.4).
Two checks take a few minutes. Your destination's official rating is on the map of 207 countries, recorded every morning. And the order of magnitude at stake once the duration limit is passed is set out in the real cost of a medical repatriation: €70,000 to €140,000 for a return from China (SkyCare). If you travel as a group, the corporate pack works on headcount — you insure a number of employees, without handing over any names.
90 consecutive days per trip at most, under the Amex Platinum France T&Cs applicable from 01/01/2025. Beyond that, the document quoted provides no further cover, whatever the destination and whatever the amount spent. The card itself stays valid: it is the travel cover that stops, not the means of payment.
In the edition quoted — France, applicable from 01/01/2025 — the duration covered is 90 consecutive days per trip, so day 91 falls outside what the document describes. No limit has been reached and no excess used; the duration boundary, and it alone, is what bites. Check on your own copy how it defines a "trip" and from when it starts counting the days.
€2,000,000 of medical expenses abroad, under the Amex Platinum France T&Cs applicable from 01/01/2025. The limit comes with a 10% excess (minimum €150, maximum €500), the insurer's prior agreement before care, and the requirement that the trip was paid for with the Card. The document is public on americanexpress.com (PDF FR_INS_PLATINUM_CG.pdf).
Yes. The Amex Platinum France T&Cs applicable from 01/01/2025 make the medical expenses cover conditional on the trip being paid for with the Card. Two further conditions come with it, recorded in the same place: the insurer's prior agreement, to be obtained before care, and a 10% excess of between €150 and €500.
No. On the edition we read — France, applicable from 01/01/2025 — the general terms of the American Express Platinum Card rule out, at general exclusion no. 11 on page 11, « Des Voyages vers des pays où Votre gouvernement a conseillé de ne pas voyager » — travel to countries your government has advised against. Being a general exclusion, it applies to every travel cover in the policy: medical, repatriation, cancellation, baggage.
American Express publishes them on americanexpress.com as a PDF (FR_INS_PLATINUM_CG.pdf) for France. Start with the date the edition took effect, since an earlier one may have been superseded: the edition applicable from 01/01/2025 places general exclusion no. 11 on page 11. Then note the maximum duration per trip, the medical expenses limit and the excess.
It answers a different need: the Maximum Insurance VIP Pack runs for twelve months with unlimited trips within the year, at $990 (or $99 a month), where the Amex Platinum France T&Cs applicable from 01/01/2025 stop at 90 consecutive days per trip. It covers emergency medical expenses up to CHF/EUR/USD 1,500,000 and medical evacuation and repatriation with no monetary limit, and carries no exclusion for destinations your government advises against.
Pack VIP: $990 for twelve months, unlimited trips. CHF 1.5M emergency medical, unlimited evacuation and repatriation, TSM/AXA direct payment guarantee in hospital.
